I

n light of recent events that have tested our community greatly, it is with the utmost pleasure I present the third edition of the Best of Teller County. This magazine highlights the best of our tenacious and resilient entrepreneurs, small business owners and community service providers that make living in our beautiful region so fulfilling. Even amidst a worldwide crisis, the people of Teller County have enthusiastically recommended their friends and neighbors for the honor of being named “the best of Teller County.” I have never been so proud of our community. We have pulled together and helped our neighbors who have

been impacted by the pandemic through selfless acts of kindness, generosity and volunteerism. I know you will join me in thanking our essential workers — those among our community members who have kept us going. Home improvement companies, plumbers, electricians, landscapers, delivery drivers, grocery store workers and other crucial service industry workers — they’ve all shown tremendous grit in their day-to-day activities. We wouldn’t have been able to sustain our families and homes without them. And finally, our medical professionals and other first responders as well as those working in support staff capacity deserve our gratitude for their tireless commitment

DOWN TO A FINE ART

Rita Randolph, artist, president of The Mountain Artists, themountainartists.org

F

IGHTING THAT INTERNAL MESSAGE that told her she couldn’t even draw stick figures, much less anything else, Rita Randolph is today an accomplished artist. She started with lessons from the late George Douthit, who showed his paintings at the Farmers Market in Woodland Park. “I just continued to paint and joined the Mountain Artists and was inspired by them,” she said. Along with showing her watercolors, Randolph once designed T-shirts for the Rocky Mountain Women’s Film Festival. A tee with stick figures; she honestly did that. Stick figures with petroglyphs. Rita thrives on challenge. Her latest project is an acrylic mural in five large panels for a home in Grand Lake. But the work has to be a scene from the front window of 150 years ago. “That has been the biggest bugaboo of my life,” she said.

Original artwork by Rita Randolph Rita Randolph is a watercolorist from Woodland Park. She learned the art of painting from the late George Douthit.

G

Courtesy of Outlaws & Lawmen Jail Museum The Outlaws & Lawmen Jail Museum, 136 W. Bennett Ave., Cripple Creek, is the first stop on the Cripple Creek District Museum’s Ghost Tour.

ET TO KNOW HISTORIC CRIPPLE CREEK with this guided tour of ghostly hotspots, typically held Saturdays, July through October. Reservations are required, and there’s a nominal charge per person. When the town of Cripple Creek filled with gold-seekers at the end of the 19th century, it was visited and inhabited by some Wild West characters. Some of them decided to stick around even after departing the land of the living, it seems. This walking tour begins at the former Teller County Jail and ends up back at the museum. A spirited tour guide talks the tour-takers through the stories of the town’s most famous apparitions, which include a trouble-making ghost who dwells in the building that’s now home to the Cripple Creek Police Department who likes to leave the water running, and a child named Lilly who is known to haunt the former Turf Club Room and casino floor of what is now Bronco Billy’s. Some visitors have seen a purple balloon traveling through the casino, untethered. It’s supposedly guided by Lilly. Once the tour’s over, you can revisit the tour stops and look for otherworldly visitors on your own.

GRAB A CUPPA ON THE GO

The Human Bean, 275 U.S. 24, Woodland Park, 922-4210, thehumanbean.com/franchises/woodland-park

I

LOVE COFFEE. Sipping on a cup of freshly-brewed Guatemalan, light roast, I asked Sara and Dan Taylor about the business. By the way, Sara knows I like Guatemalan and she was ready for me with a cup, just as she knows the tastes of others who drive up. There’s more than coffee here, with a menu offering tea, smoothies, Italian sodas, bagels and breakfast sandwiches. Their visitors love that, Sarah said, and the staff also give out treats to cats and dogs accompanying their humans at the drive-thru espresso stand. “We genuinely enjoy our customers,” Sara said. “I look forward to finding out about their day.”

drew me into this watering hole — a fave with locals and tourists alike. It was full of families enjoying “the best pizza in the area,” adults catching up at the welcoming bar and in the pool room, and a fun-loving crowd on the patio that faces Gazebo Lake. I opted for post-hike health food: Draft beer and the Peak Nachos topped with chicken ($10.25). It was a worthy and tasty reward, served up by friendly staff. This is the kind of place where you can strike up an easy conversation, join in a friendly game and have some really tasty bar food that goes a step beyond.

GO FOR CHINESE WHEN YOU WANT A WOODLAND PARK STAPLE

Mayflower Chinese Restaurant, 1212 U.S. 24, Woodland Park, 687-0711

I

WAS INTRODUCED TO THIS WOODLAND PARK STAPLE in 2001 shortly after I moved to to town. The city was a much different place and had a different feel in those days. There was no decorative median on Highway 24 as you passed through town and there were only a handful of restaurants. The Mayflower offers good food at affordable prices to locals, as well as those traveling through the City Above the Clouds. The restairamt also has an abundance of vegetarian options, flavorful sauces and huge portions, not to mention the wonderful atmosphere and great views of Pikes Peak. There is ample parking and a variety of shopping nearby.

Know The Facts About CBD and Full-Spectrum Hemp Oil Agricultural Hemp: is part of the cannabis plant family and by definition contains less than 0.3% THC. It must be registered, inspected and certified by the respective state program in which it is grown and harvested. (Cannabis plants with higher amounts of THC are classified as marijuana.) CBD: is the abbreviation of Cannabidiol, one of many cannabinoids found predominantly in hemp. CBD is non-psychoactive (does not make you "high") and is considered to be very safe and beneficial. Cannabis: Properly known as cannabis sativa, is the "parent" plant of both marijuana and agricultural hemp, which are two very different plants cultivated and utilized in very different ways. Endocannabinoid System (ECS): The ECS is a biological system that helps regulate homeostasis (balance) in the body. It is composed of endocannabinoids (cannabinoids naturally produced in the body), enzymes, and cannabinoid receptors (primarily CB1 and CB2) found on cells in the central and peripheral nervous systems as well as the immune system. Full-Spectrum: True full-spectrum hemp oil is made with the whole hemp plant (NOT a CBD isolate or concentrate) and contains high levels of both cannabinoids and the other beneficial phytonutrients, including terpenes (beta-caryophyllene, humulene, and limonene), flavonoids, polyphenols, and others. In contrast, CBD isolate or concentrate has very small amounts of the other phytonutrients. THC: is the abbreviation for Tetrahydrocannabinol, a psychoactive cannabinoid (one that gets you high) found predominantly in marijuana. At Whole In The Wall Herb Shoppe we sell Functional Remedies brand Full Spectrum Hemp Oil because this company starts with the most nutrient-dense hemp plants (600 phytonutrients) on the planet-grown organic on their own farm just east of Pueblo, CO. They use Lipid Infusion+Coconut oil under low pressure and low heat for their extraction method so no harsh chemicals or destroying the benefits through the extraction process. Also, we like the fact that Functional Remedies uses respected independent labs to validate the specifications and nutrient levels of all their products so there’s no bias in testing. Many of our customers have taken this product for Pain Perception, Stress Response, Mood, Cellular Energy, Immune Function, Inflammation, Sleep, Memory, Metabolism, Appetite and Digestion. again and again to one spot on that tour: The Quiet Reading Room. Located on the library’s expansive second floor, the space includes a focal point of Pikes Peak. BRINGING COMMUNITY TOGETHER

Woodland Park High School Football, 151 Panther Way, Woodland Park, 686-2067, wpsdk12.org

I

HAVE DISCOVERED OVER MY THREE-PLUS DECADES as a sportswriter that high school football brings communities together in special and unique ways. A successful football team usually sets the tone for other sports and generates a lot of community spirit. The Woodland Park Panthers had their first winning season since 2005 (5-4) last fall. Joe Roskam’s team is busy at work preparing for this campaign, which is scheduled to get underway Aug. 28 at Panther Field against Basalt. The nine-game regular season also includes home games against Elizabeth (Sept. 4), Arvada (Sept. 25, Homecoming), The Classical Academy (Oct. 16) and La Junta (Oct. 30). The homecoming game is usually the most festive day of the fall sports season. A parade takes place and former students usually make their way back to the City Above the Clouds to enjoy the celebration and take in that night’s game.
