WHAT TO DO WHEN

A LOVED ONE DIES

BY PATTY TOMSKY, THE GAZETTE

U

nfortunately, many people are unprepared to handle the practical details when they experience a death in the family. And if one is responsible for the arrangements — for the cremation or burial, homegoing or celebration of life, the added stress of not understanding what you need to do can be hard to handle along with the grief you may be feeling. This pressure may become worse if family members have not had the difficult conversations they need to have to ensure the deceased person’s wishes are honored. Terri Flores-Brown of The Springs Funeral Services in Colorado Springs and Steve Tomsky of Mountain Memorial Funeral Home in Divide, two decades-long funeral professionals, were kind enough to delineate several key steps for families undergoing some of the most difficult hours and days they will ever experience.

WHAT TO DO FIRST

“One of the primary things I tell people is this — have those difficult conversations with your family and make sure you have a will that includes your final wishes. One of the hardest things we see is the contention it can cause among family members when they hold different ideas about how the deceased would want things done. You can certainly imagine if relations were strained prior to the death how those relationships might look while making difficult decisions together,” Flores-Brown said. Tomsky concurs: “There’s always the option to meet with a pre-need counselor. Often, you can lock in rates when funeral services may go up over time or with inflation. You can also set up a payment plan so that your family isn’t faced with financial hardship at the same time they’re grieving your death. This will allow you to make all of the decisions about services and other details before you pass.”

WHAT YOU WILL NEED AT THE FUNERAL HOME

If you are the one making funeral arrangements for a loved one, there are specific pieces of information you will need to bring with you to the funeral home. If your deceased loved one was an honorably discharged veteran, bring their DD-214, the military discharge form, to the arrangements. If the veteran is retired, they will receive a gun salute, flag presentation and a bugler; non-retired will receive a flag presentation and a bugler. Veterans and their spouses are able to be interred at any national cemetery. There’s a new cemetery, Pikes Peak National Cemetery, for vets in Colorado Springs that’s close to Schriever Air Force Base. The funeral home generally makes those arrangements for veterans and their families. For any deceased person, the death certificate requires their social security number; mother and father’s names (including mother’s

maiden name) and birthplace. Many people, even if they opt for direct cremation, would like to place a note or family picture into the crematory with their loved one. You may request to be present during the cremation, as well. BURIAL OR CREMATION

If you opt for a burial with a casket, you should plan to bring the clothing you would like the person to wear during the viewing and/or ceremony, although many funeral homes do have clothing options you can order via catalog. Funeral directors have catalogs for you to choose caskets, urns and other mementos — even diamonds created from the loved one’s ashes set in jewelry.

FINANCIAL CONCERNS

If you have not prepared financially for a funeral or cremation, be aware that a qualified Medicaid recipient may be eligible for $1,500 for any funeral service they choose. CONTINUED ON PAGE 24

WHAT TO DO WHEN A LOVED ONE DIES

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 23

In Colorado Springs, direct cremations can cost anywhere from $1,200 up — full service funeral homes allow you to let the directors and staff there handle many details for you, taking a lot of pressure off in a time when you need as much help as you can get. Burials can become costly — the casket, opening the gravesite and paying for the plot can run into the thousands. If you would like a viewing with a cremation, you might choose an urn to be present there; you can also rent a casket for a more traditional viewing option. Many people make posters of a favorite picture of a loved one; bring favorite hobby items; create a CD of favorite music; and plan to have several family members speak during the services. This is a lot to deal with, but the funeral home staff will help guide you to these decisions during arrangements. Don’t be afraid to share your budget restrictions — funeral service professionals are happy to

help you figure out options that are reasonable for your family; they are helping professionals and many abide by National Funeral Directors Association (NFDA) guidelines: “Remember no one should feel pressured into purchasing anything that does not fit within a budget or that does not provide value to the service.” For more, visit rememberingalife.com. You will find advice on grief counseling; preplanning; and helping youth deal with loss, plus much more. SERVICES – CONTEMPORARY OR TRADITIONAL?

Services for the deceased range from those the family might arrange at the loved one’s place of worship or a park to several days of viewings at the funeral home; a church service; and a graveside service. The cost of these options vary widely — but note that it’s customary for many churches (and/or the officiant) to receive an honorarium for the service as well

as for any musical professionals you would like to perform there. Many funeral homes host services at their establishments. For these, or church services, you’ll want to indicate in the obituary if you’d like people to send flowers or make a donation to a charity in lieu of flowers. Ask your loved ones prior to a debilitating sickness about these options — many people will be eager to have their wishes known. “A pre-need contract can include the smallest detail and help the family relax about expenses,” said Flores-Brown. Be prepared to spend at least an hour during arrangements. You will be asked if you would like a service; if so, you will be asked to bring photos and perhaps some prayers or inspirational words to put on the folders handed out to visitors at the service, if you opt to have these printed. This is also the time you will be given direction about placing obituaries into the newspaper

or online, both locally and in the hometown of the deceased. SAFE PASSAGE

If your loved one dies at home without hospice care, you will need to call 911. Otherwise, home hospice caregivers or the hospital will call the funeral home you designate. The cost of the removal of the person is often included in the direct cremation contract at the funeral home. Rest assured, funeral homes are being extremely careful with the governor’s mandated Covid restrictions for removals, gatherings and visitations. They will be able to advise you about keeping the services safe for your family and visitors alike. “It’s always a good idea to call us before a loved one dies. We can meet to make arrangements that include all of the deceased’s wishes and also create a payment plan for services that everyone can live with comfortably,” Tomsky said.
