Consider these factors when expressing sympathy BY PATTY TOMSKY, THE GAZETTE

It sometimes feels like you can’t think of anything to say to a person in grief and who is suffering loss. The best notes are from the heart, of course, but experts coach us to avoid certain platitudes when composing a sympathy card for someone. Here are the top five to include and to skip while you are expressing your condolences either in person or in writing. 1. “They’re in a better place.” Although the recipient might respect your faith in an afterlife, it feels very dismissive when someone writes this in a card or says it to a grieving family. The person may be understandably upset and telling them the deceased should be away from them when it doesn’t feel like that is somewhat insensitive. 2. “I know how much (NAME) meant to you and I’m so sorry for

your loss.” A close friend of the bereaved may know that the deceased was a central figure in the person’s life however, don’t use this if you are not sure of the relationship. It will feel inauthentic if the relationship was strained for years. If you’re sure of the close nature of the relationship, this is perfectly fine to say. 3. “Please let me know if you need anything I am here for you.” This is a good way to end the card’s sentiments. Make sure you follow up, however. Once the funeral is over, and some days have elapsed, reach out via email or call the bereaved person on the phone. You can send something over instead of asking if they need it, as well. Many people feel uncomfortable asking for help. Write down a few ideas for yourself (not necessarily on the card) and follow through.

4. “I was so sorry to hear of the tragic loss of your (…). I am so sorry that happened and want you to know I am here if you want to talk or just hang out when you’re ready.” After a surprise death, it becomes just that much more difficult to express yourself comfortably. The person knows that the situation is awful so acknowledging that is honest and will help them realize others share their shock and loss. Following up with an offer to be with that person is also a good way to let them know you will be there. 5. “I’m so sorry for your loss. I remember when (NAME) was at such and such a place how funny they were. (Or how they always said ‘X’ or brought their yorkie Jingles in the car with

them to the baseball game — really anything specific that is a fond memory) They will be missed.” You might be able to bring a shadow of a smile to the bereaved person’s face, provided you know the person well enough to write something true. “Celebrations of Life” rather than “funerals” are part of a movement in the funeral services community to focus on the person’s living years instead of the years prior to their demise when ill health may have limited their experiences. The fact is, bereaved people will be gratified to see others sharing their loss no matter what they write or say, within limits of course. Even, “I wish I had the right words, please know that I care,” will help. For more ideas, visit grief.com. ❦
