DOUBLE KITCHEN ISLANDS
With more home designs calling for open concept living, it’s no surprise that the requests for double kitchen islands is on the rise as well. Ask yourself, when you host a night of entertainment or a large family gathering, where do people tend to congregate? The kitchen!

A step-by-step guide to quitting your job BY LIZ RYAN FORBES
Unless you have an alternate source of income, you’re going to need to find a new job before you quit the job you’ve got now. You can launch a stealth job search and land your new job while you’re still working at the old one. Of course, you have to use discretion during your under-the-radar job search. You can’t advertise your job-hunting status on your LinkedIn profile. I also don’t recommend that you send out any blast email messages to your friends, telling them about your job search. No matter how many times you use the word “confidential” in that message, one of your knucklehead friends is sure to send it to all of his or her friends, and that’s how stealth job searches can run into trouble! You still have plenty of good jobsearch channels available to you. You can reach out to recruiters (find them on LinkedIn or ask your friends for recommendations) and you can still contact your college alumni office to connect with alums who might be looking for talented people like you in their firms. You can still reach out to hiring managers using Pain Letters and your Human-Voiced Resume. You can’t post your resume on a career site, and you can’t go to job fairs without worrying that the wrong people will learn about your job-hunting status. You’ll have to use some fancy footwork to go on job interviews, but that is a new skill you’re learning, and one that all of us must learn! You can schedule some of your interviews after hours, and use vacation time for the others. When you get your job offer from the next company you’re going to work for, let your new hiring manager know that you intend to give two weeks’ notice at your current job. The “intend” part is important because some inhuman workplaces will walk you out the door the minute you tell them you’re leaving — as though leaving the company were itself a crime! Later on you can write a pithy review of that place on Glassdoor, but for now, you want to get out in one piece!
Talk to your new manager about your start date, in case your two weeks’ notice turns into no notice at all when you get walked out the door unexpectedly. Before you give notice, get your personal belongings out of the office just in case they decide to hustle you out before you have to chance to gather your things. Get any personal files off your computer’s hard drive, and make sure you’ve got email addresses for (or have made first-degree LinkedIn connections with) any friends at work you want to stay in touch with. Make sure you’ve got references from the job you’re leaving — not necessarily your own manager or the HR department, but other managers who like you or perhaps a manager who left the firm before you did. You can also use co-workers, vendors and customers as reference-givers. Make sure you leave your desk and your work in good shape for the next person. Even if you hated the job, your reputation is important, so don’t do anything stupid like destroying files or withholding passwords. All that will do is irritate people and not the people you’d want to irritate, but your co-workers who have done nothing wrong. Choose a time when your manager is in his or her office or when you can get him or her into a private spot like a conference room, and give notice in person if you can. You can say “Jane, I wanted to chat with you for a second. Is now a good time?” Jane will say “What’s up?” and you’ll wait until you and she are behind a closed door, and then say “Jane, I wanted to let you know that I’ve accepted a new position and I’m going to be leaving here. I want to thank you for your support here.” (Say it, even if it’s not true — white lies for politeness’ sake are the mark of a wellbrought-up person, like you!) Jane may be surprised or not, but either way, your task is nearly done. If Jane accepts your two weeks of notice, you and she may discuss what you’ll be working on during your last two weeks on the job. She may get you involved in the search for your replacement, or not.
Either way, you can celebrate — you’ve accomplished your goal! If Jane can’t handle the sight of you for another two weeks, she may tell you to leave now or sometime between now and the date you’ve picked to leave, two weeks out. You will have covered this topic with your new manager so that he or she will be ready for you to start early if necessary. That way, you won’t be out two weeks of income. Wish Jane and the team well and during the last two weeks on the job, don’t say anything negative about Jane or the company, no matter how you feel. People will remember what you say and it won’t make your teammates feel better to hear
you bash your leaders or your company given that they still have to work there. Say as little as possible except that you’re glad to know all of them. If Jane asks which company you’re going to work for, you can tell her, if you’re comfortable, or you can say “It’s not a competitor.” Some managers are paranoid and will use your silence in answer to that question as a justification for showing you out the door early. Don’t be rattled if this happens. When people show you what they’re made of, be grateful! Your heart told you it was time to leave, and now you’ve had more evidence from the universe that your instinct was correct.
In the best case, Jane and the team show you off with a going-away party and you all stay friends and everybody stays in touch. Life is long. Relationships are long-lasting, and there’s no point in burning bridges. You don’t have to go to your exit interview if you’re offered one — after all, you’ll be so busy preparing things for your replacement during those last two weeks! — but if you do go, focus on the positive. If they’d really wanted your opinion about the job, they would have asked you before it was too late. Now it’s onward and upward for you, heading into your next career adventure.
