Although, Honda redesigned the Civic just last year, the response widely indicated the revamp was not sufficient enough and failed to give Honda any real benefit in an especially competitive car class. For 2013, Honda comes back with an overhauled Civic which skillfully addresses its key failings of the prior year. The 2013 Honda Civic is a compact car that comes in both coupe and sedan body styles which offer a complete range from basic and efficient to sporty and luxurious. And, as Bret Petersen, General Manager at Freedom Honda, pointed out . “The 2013 Civic offers the best combined fuel economy in its class.” Significant changes to the 2013 Civic include an abundance of standard gear and improved materials with the most obvious changes being made to the upgraded styling creating a more distinguishing and sportier appearance. “All 2013 Civics’ now come standard with back-up camera, Bluetooth, and
Pandora as well as automatic on/ off halogen headlamps.” Said Bret Petersen, General Manager at Freedom Honda. “These features are commonly options on most cars in this class.”
All new styling includes a new windshield and side-front windows with sound-dampening material around the front wheel wells, floor and firewall. As a result, Honda has done away with
a lot of acoustic hot spots making it feel more refined and adding to interior quietness. Additionally, advanced steering and suspension improvements have ConTinueD on PAGe 2

although i like to do my own repairs whenever i can, i don’t know enough about cars to make a reliable diagnosis. is it ethical for me to use commercial shop mechanics to make the diagnosis and then use that information to do the repair myself? am i hurting their livelihood by giving them the implied promise of a potential repair job to get a thorough diagnosis, while knowing full well that i will not give them the business?

RAY: most shops fold the cost of diagnosis into their posted repair rates. so if you’re paying $75 an hour for repair work, that covers the time spent figuring out what’s wrong with the car.

TOM: Which means that if you simply go in and ask for an estimate (which requires a diagnosis) with little or no intention of having the repair done by that shop, you are taking advantage of them and asking them to work for free. and in my experience, most people don’t like to work for free. especially when they’re not told that they’re working for free.

RAY: We also have people who call the shop to ask for an estimate on a specific job (so specific that we know they’re reading it off of someone else’s estimate). and since they’ve asked us for a price, we have to call to get parts prices and figure out how much labor will be involved, which is timeconsuming.

sharpened the Civic’s handling, and the Civic’s ride comfort has been genuinely enhanced by extensive body and chassis upgrades. Interior adjustments clearly involved upgrading seats and upholstery with better quality materials and introducing a more sophisticated center-stack controller. The well-known two-tier dash display includes an upper instrument panel with a five-inch LCD display. Optional navigation systems have been improved with subscription-free FM-based traffic info. Legroom and headroom for front passengers is roomy and satisfying while rear passengers will appreciate legroom markedly more generous than most of the Civics rivals. The standard Civic coupe and sedan come in LX, midrange EX and top-of-the-line EX-L trims and the sedan can also be had in a fuel-efficient HF trim. Entry-level LX models are equipped with 15-inch steel wheels, automatic headlights, full power accessories, air-conditioning, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, a one-piece fold-down rear seatback, cruise control, four-speaker (six for the coupe) sound system with a CD player, an auxiliary audio jack, and iPod/USB audio interface. The fuel-efficient HF sedan offers standard features similar to those of the LX along with a few upgrades. Low-rolling-resistance tires and aerodynamic cast-aluminum wheels, wind-cheating underbody panels and a rear spoiler all intended to
present maximum fuel efficiency. The EX model allots 16-inch alloy wheels, rear disc brakes, a sunroof and 60/40 split-folding rear seatbacks. The EX coupes has an upgraded seven-speaker sound system, while EX sedans have a six-speaker sound system. The EX-L model adds foglights, heated mirrors, leather upholstery and heated front seats. Powered by a 1.8 liter four-cylinder engine, the front-wheel drive 2013 Civic puts out 140 horsepower and 128 pound-feet of torque. Transmission choices include a five-speed manual or available five-speed automatic. The automatic provides an EPA-estimated 28 miles per gallon city and 39 miles per gallon highway and 32 miles per gallon combined. The numbers are slightly lower in the manual at 28 city, 36 highway and 28 combined. Standard safety features on the 2013 Civic include stability control, antilock brakes, front side airbags and full-length side curtain airbags. The updated body is expected to provide better frontal impact protection along with modified front-seat side airbags. Buyers can also supplement with the optional collision warning and lane departure warning which are uncommon in this price range. The Honda Civic has a reputation as one of the best driving cars in its class, and the fine-tuning in the 2013 model simply makes it better. It is one of the most comfortable and composed rides in the class and Honda buyers are sure to be impressed.
TOM: so this kind of thing is done, khai. But that doesn’t make it nice. The ethical thing to do is to be honest with the shop, and then pay them for their time. RAY: if you know that something is wrong with your brakes but you don’t know exactly what, let the shop know that you’re hoping to do the repair yourself, but you’d like to pay them to do the diagnosis. TOM: Then pay them their regular rate for the time and expertise they put into figuring it out for you. RAY: similarly, if you’re looking to check up on another shop’s estimate, be honest. That’s what we’d prefer. say that you just got a diagnosis and an estimate from another shop, and you were hoping to find out if it seems like it’s in the right ballpark. TOM: That’s a lot easier for us to answer than it is for us to go chasing parts prices for half an hour. and we’d do that for most people, figuring that if we’re helpful, perhaps we’d get their business another time. RAY: some shops may tell you that they don’t have time to help you. But that’s probably because they, what? don’t have time to help you. so then you call another shop. But by giving each party in a transaction the opportunity to know what’s really going on, you’ll be on solid ethical ground. ■

2013 Ford Explorer Limited AWD is a changed SUV BY ann m. JoB associaTed PRess Wow, the ford explorer sure has changed. no longer a truck-based sport utility vehicle, the explorer rides comfortably and is generously sized, with noticeable roominess. inside, the 2013 explorer can be stocked with high-tech features, including a navigation system offering the most fuel-efficient route to your destination. for 2013, the explorer also has more safety features than ever and earned a top, five-out-of-five stars in federal government crash testing. and, with an optional, turbocharged four-cylinder engine helping the 2013 explorer earn a government rating of 20 miles per gallon in city driving and 28 mpg on the highway, the explorer ranks as the best large-sized suV in highway fuel economy. Pricing is on par with large suVs that offer three rows of seats. The seven-passenger, 2013 explorer has a starting retail price of $31,995 (with destination charge) for a frontwheel drive model with 290-horsepower V-6 and automatic transmission. The 2013 explorer with the fuel-efficient, turbocharged four cylinder costs about a thousand dollars more, and the turbo four is available only on front-wheel drive explorers. competing suVs include the 2013 Honda Pilot, which has a starting msRP, including destination charge, of $30,350 for a front-wheel drive model with 250-horsepower V-6 and seating for up to eight. all-wheel drive 2013 Pilots start at $31,950. another competitor is the 2013
dodge durango, which has a starting msRP, including destination charge, of $30,490 with rear-wheel drive and 290-horsepower V-6. all-wheel drive 2013 durangos start at $32,690. note the Pilot is available with V-6 only, while the durango is offered with choice of V-6 or 360-horsepower V-8. no V-8 is offered for the explorer any more. But a new-for-2013 explorer sport, with price starting at $41,675, gets the 365-horsepower, turbocharged V-6 that’s in the performance ford Taurus sHo sedan. in 2000, the explorer was the topselling suV in the united states, with annual sales of 400,000 or more. But highly publicized rollover crashes and questions about the explorer’s firestone tires hammered sales, and competitors proliferated and benefited over the years. Through 11 months of calendar 2012, for example, explorer sales totaled 146,963. still, buyers wanting a competitively priced, roomy, domestically built suV that’s can pack in the safety and convenience features of a sedan will find much to like in the 2013 explorer. The explorer now uses a more car-like platform for a nicer ride. it’s the same one used in ford’s flex crossover suV, and it gave the test explorer a compliant ride over road bumps and a bit of cushioned ride over sharp humps on an off-road trail. Yes, the explorer still is offered with a drive system for all four wheels, and the test explorer, a limited model that
topped out at just over $47,000, included the easy-to-operate terrain management knob with settings for driving in snow, mud and sand. But the explorer no longer has a transfer case and locking differential for rugged off-roading. indeed, the test explorer limited seemed as luxurious as a luxury sedan — except everyone sat high up from the pavement. People in the front two seats had good views out above most other vehicles on the roads. But the driver has no real view of what’s immediately ahead of the explorer hood, which sits high and imposing. likewise, the rearview camera and reverse sensing system were a must, as it was impossible to see if anything low was behind the explorer. The rear camera is standard on the pricey limited and sport models but is part of a $1,500 option package on the XlT trim model and not offered from the factory on the base explorer. But, ford has added or offers a host of other safety items on the explorer, including a first-ever front-passenger knee air bag to help keep the rider from slipping under the dashboard during a frontal collision. curtain air bags for the first two rows of seats also are standard, as is traction control with electronic Roll stability control that seeks to avert rollovers. Then there are the optional rear inflatable seat belts for the two outboard passengers in the second row. This is where children typically ride, and
these new belt-mounted air bags help distribute crash forces across a larger body area to reduce the potential for injury. There are no reported injuries from use of these belts. But some child safety seat manufacturers have advised caution in using these belts with child safety seats. Parents can consult child seat manufacturers for the seat they purchase. among the other safety items: the startling-at-first collision warning system that flashes red lights on the driver windshield if the system senses the explorer may rear-end a vehicle ahead. Thankfully, ford engineers include a control to allow drivers to tailor the spacing between cars to avoid frequent red-light warnings. The 3.5-liter, double overhead cam V-6 in the tester worked smoothly with the six-speed automatic transmission to deliver power readily and steadily, despite the heft of the 4,700-pound explorer. The sensation isn’t instantaneous, and 0 to 60 miles an hour takes a reasonablefor-an-suV 8 seconds. With a majority of the miles driven on city streets or dirt paths, the test explorer limited averaged 18 mpg, which is under the 19-mpg combined city/highway rating from the government. With a fuel tank holding 18.6 gallons, this amounted to a range of just 334 miles. The durango’s fuel tank holds 24.6 gallons, in comparison. consumer Reports magazine ranks the explorer much worse than average for reliability. ■

Union backers say Nissan threatens plant closure By JEFF AMy AssociAtEd prEss JACKSON, Miss. — pro-union workers said tuesday that Nissan Motor co. has threatened to close its canton assembly plant if workers vote for the United Auto Workers to represent them, though the company denies such threats. such threats would violate federal law, which bars managers from telling employees they’ll close a plant in retaliation for a pro-union vote. “i think the UAW’s allegation that we’ve threatened and intimidated our canton employees is simply not truthful,” spokesman david reuter said. “Nissan follows the law and always has.” Union supporters, aided by prominent black ministers and actor danny Glover, held a rally tuesday at tougaloo college to criticize the company. the UAW has been trying to unionize the 5,200-worker plant for years, but no petition for an election has been filed.
in the meantime, the union is trying to push the Japanese automaker to allow it inside the plant to present its case to workers, saying Nissan is running an unfair anti-union campaign. American unions have increasingly focused on such calls for fairness or company neutrality in union elections as they struggle to stanch member losses. Morris Mock, a pearl resident who works at Nissan, said that in group meetings, company managers implied the factory might close. However, he said that a manager was more direct in a one-on-one meeting, saying “they’re going to move this factory away.” “in the one-on-ones, they can say it,” Mock said. it’s just their word against mine.” if the allegations were true, reuter asked, why hasn’t a UAW supporter filed a complaint with the National Labor relations Board? that body is charged with enforcing federal labor law.
Kathleen McKinney, the director of the NLrB’s New orleans office, said the board received two unfair labor practice complaints in late summer. Neither of them dealt with a threat of closing the plant. McKinney said both complaints were investigated and dismissed in september after the board found no proof. No other complaints are pending. reuter said that twice in 2012, managers talked to employees “about what it means to be unionized.” “this was in no way intimidation,” he said. “it’s not a threat.” the spokesman said Nissan isn’t legally required to open the plant to union organizers. “they are allowed to engage our employees outside the plant environment,” he said. “We are allowed to engage our employees inside the plant environment.” one issue in the vote is Nissan’s use of contract workers to perform many
tasks. Employees who work directly for Nissan say they make much more than such contractors, many of whom were fired during the recession. reuter refused to say what share of the 5,200 workers are employed directly by Nissan and how many work for contractors. speakers tuesday repeatedly appealed to the heritage of the civil rights movement, noting that historically black tougaloo college was a bastion of the fight for black rights in Mississippi. “dr. King said the best anti-poverty program he knew was a union,” said Glover, who has repeatedly appeared in support of pro-union workers. student members of the Mississippi student Justice Alliance said they were discussing the case with students at historically black colleges outside the state. they said Nissan has targeted young auto buyers, and that a pro-union youth movement would be effective. U.s. rep. Bennie thompson, d-Miss.,
has voiced support for the union. An outside group supporting the union, the Mississippi Alliance for Fairness at Nissan, is chaired by rev. isiac Jackson, head of Mississippi’s largest black Baptist denomination. Mock said he’s signed a card requesting a union election, but it’s unclear if the UAW is close to the 30 percent required to force a vote. Unions often wait until a majority of workers or more sign cards to file for an election. “the number of employees who are interested in unionizing is very small, in comparison to the number who are telling us they’re not interested in unionizing,” reuter said. Worker James Brown disputed that claim. “there are hundreds of people who support us in the plant in what we’re doing, but because of the fear from the videos and the attitude of management, it’s making it hard for us,” he said. ■
Toyota recalls 1.29M vehicles for air bags, wipers By yUri KAGEyAMA AssociAtEd prEss TOKYO — toyota is recalling over one million cars around the world for faulty air bags and defective windshield wipers. the move comes just days after toyota regained its spot as the world’s No. 1 automaker from U.s. rival General Motors co., with global vehicle sales that climbed to a record 9.748 million vehicles. the company is now recalling 907,000 cars, mostly corollas, due to air bags that can improperly inflate when the vehicle’s electronic signals damage a chip in the part that controls the air bags. it also is recalling 385,000 Lexus is luxury cars with wipers that can get stuck if there is heavy snowfall. initially, the Japanese automaker had said there were no accidents related to either problem, but toyota Motor corp. spokesman Naoto Fuse said Wednesday that two crashes were reported in the U.s. related to the air bag problem. toyota had not been able to confirm them and Fuse said it is unclear whether anyone was injured in the two crashes. toyota has confirmed 18 cases in the U.s. of abrasion-type injuries from the air bag problem, he said. in total, the automaker has received 46 reports of problems involving the air bags from
North America, and one from Japan, and 25 reports of problems related to the windshield wipers. As part of the air bag recall, toyota is recalling some 752,000 corolla and corolla Matrix cars in the U.s., about 141,000 vehicles in canada and thousands of similar vehicles in Japan and Mexico that were manufactured between december 2001 and May 2004. the part will be corrected to be able to block damaging signals, said Fuse. the problem wipers affect three kinds of Lexus is models, manufactured from May 2005 to october 2011, including 270,000 vehicles in the U.s. and nearly 17,000 vehicles in canada. the recall also affects the Lexus is sold in Europe, the Middle East and china, toyota said. toyota’s reputation for top quality has been undermined in the past few years by massive recalls for a spate of problems, including bad brakes, gas pedals and floor mats, mostly in the U.s. Executives have repeatedly promised to beef up quality controls and be quicker with recalls to repair toyota’s image. toyota has announced some recalls in recent months, but they have been relatively minor, such as floor mats, and generally affect vehicles manufactured

before its latest efforts to regain sterling quality. Last month, toyota agreed to pay more than $1 billion in the U.s. to settle lawsuits where vehicle owners said the value of their cars and sUVs
plummeted after the company recalled millions of vehicles because of suddenacceleration issues. Executives say they are not admitting fault. But they acknowledge the company is eager to put the recall crisis behind it.
toyota’s production was hit by the quake and tsunami in northeastern Japan in 2011, where key suppliers were located, but it has since recovered, seeing sales grow not only in the U.s. but also in Asia.. ■
