Dear Tom and Ray:

I live in the San Francisco Bay area and love my 2003 Nissan Maxima. It works fine, except for a problem we began to experience last summer. On a trip to Las Vegas in hot weather, the car began to shift into third gear very roughly when we started climbing into the mountains. The temperature was in the high 90s, and the engine temperature went up, though not to the danger level. When the car shifted back into fourth, again, the shifting was very rough. On returning home, I brought it to the dealer. They could not find any problem, but we changed the transmission fluid, which was needed. We had the same problem going to Arizona a month later. High temperature, high altitude and a steep grade brought on the problem. Everything has been fine since then, until we went to Los Angeles. The same problem occurred when crossing the Grapevine in 100-degree weather. We can’t duplicate the problem for the dealer, since the weather is always cool, and we live near sea level. No one seems to know what is causing the problem or even where to look. If I get on the freeway here, I can floor the car, and it shifts smooth as silk. We’re going to Arizona again soon. Can you help?

TOM: Going up steep hills in hot weather is when you put the greatest amount of stress on your transmission. Well, steep hills, hot weather and two mothers-in-law in the back seat. But generally speaking, that’s when a transmission is under the greatest load and is working the hardest. So, if something is wrong, that’s when you’re first likely to see it.

RAY: It could be something relatively easy to fix, like a lazy solenoid, a sticky valve or a software issue that can be solved by re-flashing your transmission computer. Or it could be the proverbial beginning of the end for this transmission. We don’t know.

Vehicles are stuck in a traffic jam during weekday rush hour in Beijing. China, which overtook the U.S. late last year as the world’s largest oil importer, has the single biggest influence on global demand for fuels. China’s consumption has risen 28 percent in five years, to 10.2 million barrels per day last year. (AP Photo/Larry Downing, Pool, File)
Hybrid vehicle sales speed up BY JERRY HIRSCH LOS ANGELES TIMES When Ferrari’s biggest and baddest supercar is a hybrid, you know the world has changed. Once considered the province of techies and the eco-friendly, hybrids are catching on in almost every vehicle segment. Hybrid sales were up 32 percent in the first two months of this year compared with the same period last year, according to research firm Autodata Corp. That’s driven by a combination of trends, including upward-creeping gas prices, a growing track record for reliability and the wider selection of hybrid offerings — everything from the entrylevel Toyota Prius C to the spacious Ford Fusion sedan to the LaFerrari, a 949-horsepower, milliondollar monster. Market share for all hybrids had been stalled at less than 3 percent. It has recently crept up to 4 percent and could double by the end of the decade, said Thilo Koslowski, an analyst at Gartner Inc. “Hybrid technology has certainly reached the inflection point,” Koslowski said, “and is being taken seriously by virtually all the automakers.” The vehicles use at least one electric motor to assist a primary gasoline engine, particularly in fuel-sucking situations such as taking off from a stoplight. The cars also capture electricity when they slow down and store it in a battery. Some can run on electricity alone for varying distances. Their fuel economy can be more than 40 percent better than the conventional gasoline version of the same model. Automakers say the success of the Toyota Prius has helped fuel interest in hybrids nationwide. “Gas prices are part of the equation, but it’s more about having the product in decent numbers,” said Jason Mosley, general manager of AutoNation Ford in Houston. The dealership’s sales of Ford’s hybrid cars are up 400 percent from a year ago. Ford’s new hybrids are selling to car shoppers such as Paul Cunningham, an insurance industry executive from Encino, Calif., who bought a hybrid Fusion recently. “I really like the design of the Fusion. I like the idea of hybrid and saving money on fuel with the current gas prices,” Cunningham said. “I also like the idea of buying an American car.” Cunningham’s Fusion is getting about 42 miles per gallon, about double the fuel economy of the Saab it replaces. Now the Cunninghams are a two-hybrid family. His wife, Sherri, drives a Prius. “The public has embraced these technologies because they have proven to be reliable and efficient,” said Ed La Rocque, Toyota’s brand manager for advanced technology vehicles. Even so, hybrids most likely will account for a comparatively small portion of auto sales for years to come. “A lot of it still depends on fuel prices,” La Rocque said. “If we get up above $5 or $6 a gallon, we will see a dramatic change.” Some would-be buyers have been reluctant
because they worry that the batteries will have to be replaced or that the cars will experience technical problems with their multiple drive systems. But this hasn’t proved to be the case so far. Toyota says 90 percent of the Prius cars it has sold since introducing the model to the U.S. market in 2000 are still on the road. “That’s why you see so many Prius taxicabs,” La Rocque said: If the cars were unreliable, he reasoned, taxi services wouldn’t use them. Another drag on sales is the higher sticker prices. The Toyota Camry hybrid is about $3,500 more than a similarly equipped gasoline-only Camry. At current California gas prices, it takes almost five years of fuel savings to make up for the higher price. Ford’s Fusion hybrid carries a similar price premium but has a payback at least a year faster because of the bigger difference between its fuel economy and that of the conventional Fusion, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. At the same time, gasoline-powered cars are becoming more competitive. “The fuel economy on gas engines is getting better. There are some new diesels coming out that get great mileage,” said Jessica Caldwell, an analyst with auto information company Edmunds. com. “Americans want fuel economy no matter what, and they aren’t that picky about where they get it.” What’s helping the hybrid market most is that more automakers have embraced the technology. Nissan dropped out of the hybrid market several years ago, but it showed off a hybrid version of its new Pathfinder crossover at the New York Auto Show last month. Honda will launch a hybrid version of its Accord this fall, which according to the EPA will have a class-leading fuel economy rating of 49 mpg in city driving. Toyota is seeing some early success with sales of the hybrid version of its full-sized Avalon sedan. “With more entries — products that are not so much a science experiment, but rather are real cars and give you the full vehicle experience — we are seeing customers select hybrids,” said Nancy Lee Gioia, Ford’s director of global electrification. Since September, Ford has become Toyota’s toughest hybrid competitor by launching the new Fusion hybrid and its C-Max, a smaller hatchback hybrid that competes with the Prius V station wagon. Ford is now selling 3,000 to 4,000 of each of the vehicles per month in the U.S. and has jumped to 17 percent of the nation’s hybrid market in February, from 5 percent in the same month last year. Much of that market share has come from Toyota, which has seen its hold on the market drop to 63 percent from 72 percent. But both automakers are sharing a bigger pie. “That’s what this market has needed the whole time,” Caldwell said. “More exposure of consumers to cars other than just the Prius.” ■
TOM: If you don’t want to rent a car for your hot-weather trips and you’re reluctant to spend a lot of money on exploratory transmission surgery at this point, I’d have a mechanic install an auxiliary transmission cooler for you. That’ll cost you a couple of hundred bucks. RAY: An auxiliary transmission cooler essentially is a small radiator that lowers the temperature of the transmission fluid. It’s often used by vehicles that tow things, because towing is very similar to climbing steep hills in that it puts an extra load on the transmission and makes it run hot. TOM: If you’re lucky, and you’ve led a good, clean life, that’ll keep the transmission temperature low enough to prevent the problem from occurring. At least for a while. RAY: Like we said, though, at some point, this probably will start happening in lower temperatures and on gentler hills. Good thing you don’t have any hills in San Francisco, right, Jim? TOM: So keep in mind that even if our suggestion works, in all likelihood, you’ll still need more serious transmission repair — or replacement — at some point down the line. ■

First hearing for “noncitizen” driver licenses bill BY YESENIA ROBLES THE dENVER POST A proposed bill to allow undocumented immigrants to apply for driver’s licenses will have its first hearing in a Senate judiciary committee Wednesday. Senate Bill 251, as introduced last week by democratic Sen. Jessie Ulibarri, of Commerce City, would allow undocumented immigrants to present copies of state tax returns, a federal tax identification number and proof of identity from their country of residence to apply for a license. The bill is expected to pass out of Wednesday’s committee made up of three democrats and two Republicans. Committee member, Sen. Kevin Lundberg, R-Berthoud said the bill is a step backward for Colorado’s secure system for verifying legality for driver’s licenses. “Colorado has been a leader in maintaining the accuracy of licenses, this now says we’ll give a licenses to anyone who claims they’re a resident of Colorado,” Lundberg said. The bill would also place a marked restriction on the license that reads “noncitizen”— an identifier needed to ensure bipartisan support by demonstrating the license could not be used for other forms of identification, organizers said. But Lundberg said it doesn’t make him feel any better “According to the bill, the license would say it’s issued to someone who is here illegally, but it’s on the backside where no one looks — that troubles me,” Lundberg said. “This whole bill is a huge step toward a full blown amnesty system for Colorado.” Sen. Irene Aguilar, d- denver, also sits on the committee and said the bill is likely to make roads safer. “It’s really important to get people licences for two reasons — one, road safety,” Aguilar said. “We would like to show that people are competent to drive. But second, is that if they don’t have a license, the cost for purchasing auto insurance is prohibited and so this would also make it easier for them to get auto insurance, so I’m supportive of it.” Colorado barred undocumented immigrants from obtaining a driver’s license in 1999. Currently only a handful of states allow undocumented immigrants to get drivers licenses. ■

2013 Kia Rio SX: Truth of things small By Warren BroWn the Washington post NEW YORK — tom Libby is a numbers guy, the senior forecasting analyst for r.L. polk & Co., a research and marketing firm for the global automobile industry. Libby and several of his colleagues were here to help journalists make sense of what they were seeing at the 113th new york international auto show. as expected, the media were captivated by the flashy stuff, such as the carefully orchestrated “surprise” unveiling of the new Chevrolet Camaro Z28, a street-legal racing car born in 1967 and now reintroduced into an automobile business torn between the need for speed and more fuel economy and less tailpipe pollution. the unveiling of the super-sexy,
frost-white, minimum-500-horsepower Z28 — and similar high-horsepower presentations by Chrysler, Ford, porsche, McLaren and Mercedes-Benz — captured the most camera, blog and print attention. But according to the numbers presented by Libby and friends, the real story is elsewhere — in the explosion of north american and global sales of cars with four-cylinder engines, such as the 2013 Kia rio sX sedan i drove here from northern Virginia. at least 52 percent of the new automobiles sold in the United states last year were equipped with those small engines, Libby said. “it is a real trend, one that’s growing. sales of cars with V-8 engines,” such as the Camaro Z28
that garnered most of the media notice, “are way down,” Libby said. What’s going on here is a classic tug of war between the flesh — represented by horsepower and speed in this case — and the spirit, pulled in the direction of penitential fuel economy and cleaner living by very real concerns over the need for energy conservation and the reduction of pollutants that contribute to global warming. Despite the hoopla over fast and fancy wheels, the numbers — and a careful look at all of the vehicles on display in the auto show at the Javits Convention Center here — strongly indicate that fuel economy and clean air are winning. i motored up from my home in northern Virginia at the median highway
speed of 75 mph in a car with a 1.6-liter, gasoline-direct-injection in-line fourcylinder engine (136 horsepower, 123 pound-feet of torque). if “fun to drive” means driving as fast as you want to drive, or legally dare to, i had lots of fun. and the drive was made even more enjoyable when i reached new york’s city limits, some 300 miles north of the Virginia residence, with the fuel gauge showing the Kia rio’s 11.4-gallon tank still half full. the next day, i had enough gasoline left for a round trip to the BMW group north american Corporate headquarters in nearby Woodcliff Lake, n.J. at BMW i got the surprise of my career as an automotive journalist — a perfectly balanced, wonderfully smooth, fun-to-
drive gasoline-direct-injection in-line three-cylinder engine. that’s “three” as in 3. three. BMW will first introduce the engine, available as a gasoline or diesel model, in its european markets. the company eventually plans to bring the engine to the United states. the aim is to get 40 miles per gallon on the highway without undermining BMW’s legendary performance. that is the real story. that is the way things are going — overall smaller engines and lighter blessed with fun-todrive performance. it is as boring, reliable and rewarding as a good, solid marriage. But apparently, according to Libby’s numbers and most of what i learned here, it is what most of us really want. ■
Fiat-Chrysler merger path to clarify By CoLLeen Barry the assoCiateD press TURIN, Italy — the Ceo of Fiat, the italian carmaker that controls Chrysler, said tuesday he expects to have “clarity” by the end of the year on how it will achieve a full merger with the U.s. auto group. “a merger with Chrysler is inevitable,” sergio Marchionne said, adding that the deal could be completed — either by a straight buyout of the minority shareholder or by a public share offering — by as early as his 10th anniversary as Fiat Ceo in mid-2014. Marchionne has jointly managed the two companies since buying a 20 percent stake in 2009. Fiat has since built up its holding in the U.s. company to 58.5 percent. however, his ambitions to fully merge the two companies have been stalled by a dispute between Chrysler’s minority shareholder, the autoworkers union pension health trust, which holds the remaining 41.5 percent of shares. the dispute centers on the value of the remaining stake in Chrysler. a court in Delaware has been asked by Fiat to put a value on a deal to buy a 3.3 percent stake in Chrysler from the trust. that ruling, which is expected in June, will form the basis for determining the value of further share deals between Fiat and the trust, amounting to a further 10 percent of the company. once that process is complete, Fiat can then decide whether to buy the remaining minority share outright or seek an initial public offering of Chrysler to buy the pension trust out. “i hope that by the end of the year we have more clarity on how to achieve it,” Marchionne said, adding that there it could be completed by his 10th anniversary as Fiat Ceo on June 1, 2014, “if i were to bet, i think there is a
probability of more than 50 percent that it will be done by then.” Marchionne added that Fiat has more than enough cash to buy the outstanding 0.stake — thanks, in part to Fiat’s decision not to pay a dividend this year. “i don’t need help from financial institutions” Marchionne said. he also said that, in the medium or long term, he might consider selling assets to ensure that the merged company is on a strong financial footing. however. Marchionne stressed that the sports car company Ferrari, which is owned by Fiat would not be among the possible disposals. Marchionne also said that Fiat may trim its earnings targets this month as the european market is expected to decline for a sixth straight year. european economies are suffering as governments have cut spending and raised taxes to lower debt. that has caused a big drop in spending, particularly on big-ticket items like cars, with the italian market dipping to half of 2007 sales and levels not seen since the 1970s. another drop in sales in europe, however moderate, “would be a worse result than the forecast that we indicated in January as the basis for the 2013 targets,” Marchionne said. the current forecast is for profits of between 1.2 billion euros and 1.5 billion euros ($1.5 million-$1.9 million) in 2013 on revenues between 88 billion euros and 92 billion euros. Marchionne said the group would update the forecasts by geographical region when they release first-quarter earnings later this month. the Fiat Ceo said he expects vehicle deliveries this year for Fiat and Chrysler
Fiat and Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne attends a Fiat shareholders’ meeting in Turin, Italy. Marchionne forecasts sales of between 4.3 million and 4.5 million cars in 2013, slightly higher than last year. Marchionne told shareholders Tuesday the company expects growth in the U.S., Latin America and Asia, while sales in Europe are forecast to decline for a sixth straight year. (AP Photo/ Marco Alpozzi, Lapresse)
combined to reach 4.3 million to 4.5 million — up from 4.2 million last year, which places the partnership as the world’s seventh-largest automaker. the combined partnership expects growth in north america, Latin america and asia, while sales in europe are forecast to decline. Last year, Fiat and Chrysler sold 2 million vehicle sin north
america, 1 million in europe, 979,000 in Latin america and 115,000 in asia. north america is expected to account for half of 2013 sales, while Latin america and europe should each contribute 1 million units. Deliveries in asia, where volumes are much lower, are expected to double. Marchionne confirmed that the group
will break even in europe by 20152016 thanks to plans to invest in italian plants to build luxury cars for export. Fiat’s italian plants have been sorely underutilized, running at 44 percent of capacity last year, as the car company invoked short-term layoff schemes to reduce production and match lagging demand. ■
