Thanks to advanced engineering combined with its size, comfort and luxury, the Cayenne is already Porsche’s best-selling car; and with the introduction of the 2013 Cayenne Diesel, great fuel economy adds another big selling point. Moreover, having the Porsche name transmits strong expectations for high performance. Fittingly, the Cayenne more than earns its place in the Porsche line-up in every category. While sitting at Porsche of Colorado Springs, as soon as I had the car-shaped key fob in the left-hand ignition and smoothly turned it, there was no doubt this car is special. The exceptional Cayenne Diesel provides a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 generating 240 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque. EPA-estimated fuel economy is tremendous for its class at 20 m.p.g. city and 30 m.p.g. highway (23 combined). Filling up the big 26.4-gallon tank can get you over 700-miles before needing to refuel. An eight-speed tiptronic automatic

gearbox is smooth and purposeful delivering a responsive ride with exceptional handling. Manual shifting is also possible using the gearshift or the paddle controls on the steering wheel.

Exterior styling maintains the dignified Porsche appearance with a sleek shape and sharp profile. Forceful rear roof pillars and smooth contours of the front end are eye-catching. The “power-

domed” hood along with the tapered rear windshield and flared wheel arches further emphasizes the unmistakable Porsche character. An upscale cockpit is luxurious and ConTInuED on PAgE 2

engine when we do. Would you recommend the new tasteful like other Porsche cabin layouts. The center console at first looks daunting with multiple buttons and seven-inch touchscreen display, but soon turns out to be very user-friendly. As with all Porsche models, the Cayenne features premium interior materials along with outstanding fit and finish for maximum comfort and luxury. Beautiful wood, alloy trim and leather upholstery create a plush and swanky setting. Front seats are available in three different designs, ranging from simple eight-way power adjustment to the 14-way sport seats, with adjustable bolsters, lumbar and seat cushion length. The split-folding rear seats not only recline but also slide fore and aft for extra legroom and comfort. The Cayenne Diesel along with the base Cayenne, Cayenne S, and Cayenne S Hybrid come standard with 18-inch wheels, automatic headlights, LED running lights, front and rear foglamps, rear privacy glass, a power liftgate (with separately opening window), automatic wipers, heated washer nozzles, heated mirrors, cruise control, dual-zone automatic climate control, eight-way power front seats with four-way lumbar adjustment and driver memory functions, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, leather upholstery, an rear seat that slide, recline, and fold, Bluetooth phone connectivity and a 10-speaker sound system with touchscreen display, CD player, an auxiliary audio jack and an iPod/USB audio interface. Characteristically the amount of optional equipment

available on Cayenne models is exhaustive. Exterior and mechanical items include different wheels, an active antiroll suspension system (Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control), a side-to-side torque-vectoring rear differential (PTV Plus), ceramic composite brakes, skid plates, running boards, roof rails, a panoramic sunroof, a regular sunroof, a heated windshield and noise-insulated privacy glass. Interior design items include four-zone automatic climate control, power rear side sunshades, ventilated front seats, a Porsche-designed child safety seat, extended leather interior trim, and alternative leather seat finishes. Electronic items include a rearview camera (with front and rear parking sensors), keyless ignition/entry, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot warning system, voice controls, a six-CD changer, a dual-screen rear seat entertainment system and a 16-speaker Burmester surround-sound audio system. Antilock brakes are standard with enhanced brake assist and readiness, stability and traction control, driver knee airbag, front side airbags and full-length side curtain airbags. Rear side airbags, parking sensors, a rearview camera and a blind-spot warning system are available. The 2013 Cayenne does an outstanding job of delivering Porsche performance in a luxury, diesel SUV. ■

Escape for our needs, or should we look at something with a six-cylinder engine or larger towing capacity? We live in minnesota and appreciate the 4-wheel drive, too. If not the Escape, do you have other suggestions for us? Thank you.

– Dave

RAY: get the Escape. Its towing capacity is 3,500 pounds, and you need to tow 2,100.

TOM: Your strategy is correct. You want a vehicle that meets your needs for the vast majority of your driving, not a vehicle that will handle every exception. And if you live in the city, a smaller vehicle with better gas mileage certainly makes sense.

RAY: You’re right to be concerned about the towing. Adding 2,100 pounds of weight to any non-behemoth vehicle makes everything work harder — the engine, the transmission, the suspension, the brakes. But the same was true of your murano, and it’s done fine.

Acura seeks second wind with greater U.S. presence

TOM: You never want to run a vehicle at or near its limit, certainly not on a regular basis. So if you were planning to tow 3,400 pounds on summer weekends, we’d advise you to get some more wiggle room. But 2,100 pounds is well within the capacity of the 2013 Escape.

BY mARk PHELAn DETRoIT FREE PRESS Acura, Honda’s luxury brand, is shifting design, engineering and production of its vehicles to the U.S. The new 2014 mDX crossover vehicle that goes on sale in July is the first Acura to be developed entirely by the company’s ohio tech center, the first Honda group platform conceived here. The mDX architecture will probably also underpin the next Honda Pilot SUV. “Acura as a brand is very heavily nAFTA-focused,” mike Accavitti, Honda and Acura senior vice president of automotive operations, told me after I drove the mDX recently. For a long time, that simply meant that Acura only existed in the U.S. and Canada. The same vehicles bore Honda badges in the rest of the world. Honda understands Acura must become more distinctive, particularly as the brand enters new markets such as China, Russia, Brazil and the middle East. As the brand’s historic home and largest market, Honda’s U.S. operations have an unprecedented opportunity to shape Acura’s future. The mDX was designed by Acura’s studio in Torrance, Calif. It just went into production in Lincoln, Ala. Every model but the RLX and TSX cars is built in north America. Honda reinforced Acura’s American identity when it decided to build the next generation nSX exotic sports car in ohio. “It’d be nice to have a higher brand premium” in terms of pricing, and a higher overall perception of Acura’s status, said Accavitti, a former Chrysler executive who joined Honda in 2012. Accavitti said buyers see Acura as a smart choice because its cars have good resale value and offer lots of features compared with similarly priced competitors. Acuras also tend to have roomy interiors, good fuel economy and high quality and reliability, said Frank markus, technical director of motor Trend magazine, and my driving partner in the mDX. none of that has translated into the prestige and prices Acura needs to compete in the top tier of luxury automakers.

RAY: You can protect your investment by taking some reasonable precautions. First, drive more slowly when you’re towing. The more gently you accelerate, the less strain you put on the engine and the entire drive train.

TOM: Similarly, by driving at 60 or 65 instead of 80, you reduce the wind resistance significantly, and reduce the engine’s workload, allowing it to run cooler.

RAY: And by changing the oil before and after your “Acura has a crisis in design,” markus said. “Their vehicles just don’t look very interesting or good. Especially versus competitors like the Audi A7 or mercedes CLA. They’ve got a long way to go on styling and to simplify their controls.” The 2014 mDX — almost certain to be a highly profitable successor to Acura’s best-selling model — is vital to the brand’s immediate future, but the ohio-built and-engineered nSX hybrid supercar may be the key in the long term. It could change people’s perception of the brand, particularly as others jump on the high-performance bandwagon with hyperpriced hybrids such as the $845,000 Porsche 918 Spyder, $1.3 million mcLaren P1 and $2.3 million LaFerrari. “We’re breathlessly awaiting the nSX,” markus said. “It’s the affordable hybrid supercar.” It’s the successor to the legendary nSX that helped put Acura on the map in the 1990s. Acura expects the combination of all-wheel drive, three electric motors, a turbocharged V-6 and high fuel economy raise the brand’s profile. “They can’t get the nSX fast enough,” said Jim Hall, managing director of 2953 Analytics. “Acura needs a serious flagship with a clear connection to the rest of its models.” ■

summer towing season, you’ll make sure you’re getting the best possible lubrication while your engine is working the hardest, and then you’ll drain out any oil that may have been subject to more heat and disintegration because of that towing.

TOM: other than that, following the owner’s manual’s maintenance instructions for heavier-duty-type of driving (that includes more-frequent scheduled maintenance for people who drive in extreme hot weather, tow things or deliver pizza), switch to a synthetic oil if your car doesn’t come with synthetic, and enjoy your new car and the better mileage. ■

Legendary five time Pikes Peak International Hill Climb winner Nobuhiro “MONSTER” Tajima BY WENDY CAMPBELL MCCLoSkEY MoToRS From his superb, wild driving style, the nickname “Monster” was born. In the All Japan Dirt Trial (rally sprint) Championship, he achieved 9 series wins. In 1988, he started competing in the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, and in 1995, he finally took the overall win. He also won New Zealand’s “Race to the Sky” eight times, giving the mountain the nickname, “Tajima’s Mountain.” He has entered numerous overseas rallies and has had much success in the Asia Pacific Rally Championship, where he won the 2WD division five times. Tajima’s motorsport legacy started in 1983 when he established Monster International Co., Ltd. to help out motorsport competitors. He worked together with many top motorsport enthusiasts. His work caught the eyes of Suzuki Motor Corporation, and in 1986, Tajima established Suzuki Sport Co., Ltd. to take over the motorsport arm of Suzuki Motor Corporation. Suzuki Sport Co., Ltd. became responsible for the development, manufacturing, and assembly of Suzuki’s factory competition vehicles. In 2002, Suzuki’s Junior World Rally Championship project started, and Tajima became team principal with great success, guiding Per-Gunnar Anderson (Sweden) to the JWRC Driver’s Championship in 2004. Suzuki was delighted with their success in the JWRC, and in 2006, they commissioned Tajima to take on the best in the world of rallying by entering their SX4 in the World Rally Championship. Sadly, Suzuki cut the project at the end of 2008 with only one full year in the WRC due to an unsure economy and a non-existent budget. Even more heartbreaking was that the new 2009 car had a much stronger engine; along with its nimble chassis and well-tuned suspension, the new car was ready to take on the better-financed and well-established teams in the WRC.

In 2007, Tajima came back to challenge Pikes Peak again as a driver, and he not only achieved the overall win, but the world record time! Tajima’s passion for motorsport has always kept his mind busy with ways to go faster, and his full will and perseverance is currently focused on breaking the fabled ten-minute barrier up the legendary mountain. He has been shockingly close in the past — less than a second and a half in 2007 — but conditions haven’t been ideal, and some small mistakes crept in during his last run in 2010 (see YouTube). Even so, “Monster’s” skill and his unique and almost unbelievable hill climb vehicle have been wildly popular with the general public (again, see YouTube and the Gran Turismo® videogame series). Tajima has earned respect from the international community because he is a man whose hard work and motorsport passion have helped him become a hill climb legend. ABOUT THE PIKES PEAK INTERNATIONAL HILL CLIMB Hill climbing is one of the oldest forms of motorsport. Not long after the birth of the automobile, the first hill climb event was held near Nice, France in 1897. The simplicity of the hill climb makes it quite popular, both to run and to watch. The roads that wind up the mountain are typically very scenic, and for the motorsport enthusiast, nothing is more relaxing than grabbing a lawn chair and watching the cars scream up the mountain along closed, public roads. Hill climbs are most popular in Europe, but the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb has a special place in hill climb folklore. When the Group B world rally cars of the mid-80s were banned for being too dangerous, manufacturers sought the most challenging and scenic hill climb to showcase their cars: Pikes

Peak International Hill Climb in Colorado Springs, USA. Here, manufacturers further modified their cars and unleashed their awesome power up Pikes Peak, even beating the open-wheeled racers competing at the time. This is where legends were born, from Audi’s video of Walter Rohrl neatly ascending Pikes Peak in an Audi S1 with multiple front and rear wings, to Peugeot’s famous short film of Ari Vatanen drifting up the mountain and coming daringly close to some huge drops in “Climb Dance.” Pikes Peak International Hill Climb was first run in 1916. Its unique nature comes from the fact that the start of the climb rests at a lofty 2,800 meters (9,400 feet) in elevation, while the finish sits at a breathtaking 4,300 meters (14,100 feet). The road surface was gravel for many years, but in the last couple of decades, more and more of the road has become paved. The road is quite wide in places, but high speeds are quickly halted by the many hairpin bends along the 20

km route (12.4 miles). Raw horsepower, aerodynamics, brakes, and weight are all extremely critical factors at Pikes Peak, even more so than other forms of motorsport and even other hill climb events. The “Race to the Clouds” is truly one of the most formidable and wellknown motorsport races in the world. MONSTER’S PASSION Pikes Peak International Hill Climb is undoubtedly the biggest and most famous hill climb event in the world. Even so, its motorsport roots remain pure because there is no way to test for the conditions. Teams have to use knowledge, experience, ingenuity, and flat-out guts to conquer this mountain. As a result, this ultimate hill climb attracted “Monster” Tajima. He liked the way that both man and machine must work together in harmony to achieve the win. In hill climbing, the “win” means more than just beating your opponents; it means pulling out all the stops to get up

the mountain faster, finding little bits of time in the line and on the car, and being very brave in braking and cornering. In the late 90s, Tajima and his team headed to New Zealand to compete in the “Race to the Sky,” when Tajima felt that the performance of the car was good enough. “Monster” took his hardearned experience from Pikes Peak and showed off his speed and tenacity on the other side of the globe. The locals were overwhelmed by his performance, and they now refer to the mountain as “Tajima’s Mountain!” This year Tajima has focused on winning the race in his electric racecar the “2013 Monster Sport E-RUNNER Pikes Peak Special.” This new prototype was developed by Tajima Motors and Team APEV, where APREV stands for the Association for the promotion of electric vehicles. Tajima is focusing his efforts on the electric racecar to promote a cleaner environment that electric cars provide. ■
