Certified Organic

Certified organic foods are grown without the use of synthetic fertilizers or pesticides, and are strictly regulated by the USDA. They must be made from at least 95% organic ingredients in order to be considered "organic." Similarly, organically raised animals meet animal welfare standards and are given organic feed without any growth hormones and antibiotics. GMOs are never allowed in certified organic products.

Animal Welfare

When you see the Certified Humane label on a product you can be assured that the farm animals had access to clean and sufficient food and water, were able to perform natural behaviors and had enough room to move around freely. The Leaping Bunny logo, o en found on household and beauty products, provides the best assurance that the product was not tested on animals.

Gluten-Free

Gluten is a protein found in foods processed from wheat and grains, including barley, rye and spelt. Gluten may cause bloating, fatigue and intestinal discomfort for individuals with celiac disease or gluten intolerance. Thankfully, most individuals can ease these symptoms by eliminating gluten from their diet. Sprouts carries more than 2,500 gluten-free products.

Non-GMO

Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are plants or animals that have their genetic material altered to produce a desired change in their characteristics that does not occur naturally. An example would be using genetic engineering to improve a plant's resistance to pests, diseases or pesticides. Look for USDA certified organic or Non-GMO Project Verified products—you can find more than 3,200 non-GMO items in our store.

Local

At Sprouts, we describe "local" as "made or produced in my state." However, the ability to eat "locally" varies depending on the region's climate and production capacity.

Fair Trade

Fair trade goods are just that. They’re fair. From tea to chocolate to body care to wine, products that bear the Fair Trade logo come from farmers and workers who are compensated justly and treated ethically.

Natural

While there’s no standard definition for natural, these foods have gone through minimal processing and do not contain artificial flavoring, colors, preservatives or synthetic ingredients.
