The thing about clay is, you can turn it into almost anything with just your hands and a few simple tools. We will explore the many techniques available to create, decorate and fire work that is “you”. Functional to sculptural; the sublime to the ridiculous. This class is a wonderful opportunity to build upon and expand your basic drawing skills! The instructor will challenge the students with a variety of still-life set-ups focusing on building rendering skills. Composition and technique will be also be central themes to this class as well as an emphasis on COLOR. Media will include graphite, charcoal, conte, colored pencil, and chalk pastel. DYNAMIC PASTELS This course will focus on developing an understanding of pastel techniques to create dynamic works of art that capture the luscious coloring, vibrancy, movement and depth that are possible with this exciting medium. Students are encouraged to not only use pastel sticks but also pan pastels and pastel pencils and to explore painting and drawing with pastels on different surfaces. PAINTING WITH A PALETTE KNIFE AND BRUSH Painting with the Palette Knife and Brush: Pushing the paint with a palette knife and brush, popular instructor Maureen Engle, will encourage you to add energy and freshness to your paintings. She believes less is often best, sees purple in everything and will help you to loosen up. Maureen offers different class exercises each session - always optional and sometimes a bit ‘out of the box’ designed to highlight various artistic concepts. THE SECRET OF A GREAT COMPOSITION Powerful works of art, whether abstract or representational, need great composition to capture and hold viewers’ attention. In this class students will master the elements of good composition, including line, tone, color, shape, rhythm, direction and the interaction among these. Students will produce several sketches and a finished painting working from still life or photographs. The class is both for beginning students and advanced oil, acrylic, watercolor, and pastel artists. IRONING/INTERMEDIATE TECHNIQUES ENCAUSTIC PAINTING Ironing as an encaustic wax painting technique results in a unique and beautiful experience for the artist and the viewer. Surfaces can be created to emulate coral-thick and textural; or thin layers of pigmented, natural, unbleached beeswax can be fused to watercolor paper or wood surfaces revealing subtle, transparent layers of color that seem to pulsate and move before the eyes of the beholder. In this encaustic workshop, learn the method of ironing wax to develop what Penny calls, “Selfscapes,” representations of sky, sea, ground, or simple yet stunning abstract fields of luscious color. You will leave this workshop with several encaustic wax masterpieces on paper and wooden substrates. While moving gracefully with the flow of the molten wax under the hot iron, you may find yourself swimming within serene waves, floating amongst translucent clouds and experiencing a healing that is born from the freedom of creating abstract beauty without restriction. INTRO TO BEADWEAVING No experience is needed to work with glass seed beads, needle and thread to learn the basics of off-loom bead-weaving. SCULPTURE BASIC WOODTURNING WITH NICK COOK There will be something in the class for everyone interested in the art and craft of woodturning. Jump head first into the world of cartooning with drawings of original characters with goofy expressions and humorous situations. We’ll learn to personify inanimate objects, tell a joke through pictures and illustrate motion and attitude. We’ll have some winter fun with our snowmen in action and marshmallow characters. REGISTRATION INFORMATION HOW TO REGISTER: Complete a registration form and submit payment. Fax, mail, or drop off at The Registration Office. Register online at www.spruillarts.org. Registration will be accepted if seats are available, the registration deadline has not passed, and all pre-requisites have been met. Spaces will not be held without a registration form and/or payment. Receipts will be sent if a valid email address is provided. SCA is not responsible for receipts that are not received.

COURSE CHANGES/ CANCELLATIONS

• Changes/cancellations initiated by a student will incur a fee and MUST be accepted by an SCA employee 3 business days (M-F 9 to 5) before class or by the published registration deadline. • There is a fee for all student cancellations, based on the course fee.

SUMMER CAMP INFORMATION: • Summer Camp is open to campers ages 5-14 only. • We do not have the staff to accommodate special needs campers. • Camp instructors will select projects based on the age of campers and the theme of the camp session. • Additional care is offered each week. There is a fee for late pick-ups.* • SCHOLARSHIPS: There are a limited number of scholarships available for our summer camp program. Contact the Education Director at 770.394.3447, extension 229. • GROUPING REQUESTS must be submitted on the registration form. Friends must list one another and be within a two (2) year age range. We do not guarantee placement. • CAMPER DROP-OFF AND PICK-UP: Walk your child in on the first day of camp. Carpool information at www.spruillarts.org. • Multi-Camp Discount: Register for 3 camps at once: save $10 on all 3 camps and subsequent camp registrations. Register for 2 camps, and then add a 3rd in a separate registration: the $10 discount applies only to the 3rd camp registration and subsequent camp registrations. Discount will not be applied retro-actively or refunded. Must register through by fax, mail, or drop off to receive the discount. Instructors • SCA general education instructors are independent contractors. Instructor contact information may be available by request. • Summer Camp Instructors are SCA employees and are drawn from the public & private school systems. They are subject to a background check at the state and federal levels. Illegally parked vehicles will be towed at owner’s expense. Pets are not permitted in the building, unless due to visual impairment.
