Single Parent Scholarship Fund

Letter from our director

Dear Friends, As we close the 2013 chapter and look toward 2014, we are positioning ourselves to provide scholarships and support services to even more single-parents. Here are a few of our many highlights: •Our board has been working on a strategic plan which will be completed by year-end. •SPSF received a generous gift from the estate of Rosalynn Snyderman. Her gift has been deposited into our SPSF Endowment Fund ensuring that singleparents receive scholarship funding for many years. •Thanks to grant funding from the Blue & You Foundation of Arkansas and the Walmart Foundation, our student service focus for 2014 will be wellness and nutrition. Funding from these grants will provide health and wellness education, and provide healthy, nutritious food options for our recipients. Our greatest challenge continues to be funding to provide scholarships and support services to serve as many students as possible. You are the strong, collective voice in our community that heralds the fact that we believe that education has the power to change lives. You are the beacon in the night to our recipients—that quiet voice that whispers to a recipient, “you’ve got this and we stand with you.” You are the ones who know that educating a parent educates a family. Thank you for your continued support. Together, we are committed to breaking the cycle of poverty and together, we are making a difference. Wishing each of you a healthy and happy holiday season.

SPSF “Sharkiologist” Our lives can change in the blink of an eye and this was certainly true for SPSF recipient Stephanie Watson and her two daughters. Married to the love of her life, Stephanie and her husband were happy, healthy, and raising their 12-year old and 7-year old daughters. Stephanie and her husband were both nurses and worked together in the medical field. One spring morning in 2007, her 43-year old husband passed away in his sleep. And, in the blink of an eye, everything changed. Stephanie made a bold decision to go back to school and pursue her dream. Today, she is an Organismal Biology and Ecology major at UALR and will graduate in May 2015. Stephanie said, “After the death of my husband, the natural thing for me to do was to go back and earn my RN/BSN. But all of my prior training didn’t save my husband’s life and nursing was something we did together. The thought of moving forward in this field without him was unbearable.” From a very young age Stephanie loved biology—specifically marine biology. She used to tell people she was going to be a “Sharkiologist” because life under the water fascinated her as much as life above the water. This past summer Stephanie had the opportunity to participate in a research project under the direction of UALR’s, Dr. Forrest Payne. Stephanie worked on a biological survey on the manmade oxbow at Gillian Park. This area includes the 140-mile Fousche River which is one of the largest wetlands in an Arkansas urban area. She collected samples and participated in research on plants, insects, animals, and water quality. “I didn’t make a choice to be a single parent. Since my husband passed away, I’ve been on call 24/7. SPSF is more than scholarship money—it is the peace of mind in knowing someone has my back and if I need something for my daughters, SPSF is a phone call away.”

A Nightof Hope honoring

Bonnie Nickol Sue Frueauff & Ellen Ingram

On Tuesday, October 15th, over 250 friends and SPSF supporters gathered at the beautiful home of Terry and Walter Quinn to honor Bonnie, Sue, and Ellen. The weather was uncooperative yet the evening was filled with gratitude and hope. Glazer’s of Arkansas provided beverages and PTC Culinary School provided food. Dora Jane Flesher chaired the event and we had a record number of volunteers working behind the scenes. We would not be the strong organization we are today without the efforts of these three women. We thank them for their vision and for taking bold action to get our Pulaski County affiliate off the ground.
