Letter from the
Director In November, I had the honor of being selected as the new Executive Director of this dynamic organization. The mission of Single Parent Scholarship Fund of Pulaski County is one that I connect to on many levels. As a young child, I knew of my mom’s commitment to obtain her nursing degree as a single parent. What I didn’t know was how hard a path she walked. Years later, as I worked to obtain my degree as a mom with two young children, she was my biggest cheerleader. She believed in education and she believed in me. The power of those two ideals fueled my commitment to achieving my goal and changing my life for myself and my family. Here at SPSF, we have the privilege to commit ourselves to helping someone achieve their higher education goal. It doesn’t get any more exciting. In April, the first With Your Help event brought together friends, family members, and co-workers of twenty-five committed Table Captains. Through the generosity of the attendees, the Giving Circle of Single Parent Scholarship Fund of Pulaski County grew. The commitment of the current 55 Giving Circle donors has allowed SPSF to begin building long term funding that ensures our ability to continue supporting the single parents of Pulaski County. Have you considered joining in that excitement by becoming a member of the Giving Circle? We would love for you to join. I would be happy to share with you how your gift will help a student provide quality childcare, insure transportation and at times provide food for the family. There are many ways to get involved at SPSF. Each of us has the power to be someone’s cheerleader. I want to extend a warm invitation to you to actively support and participate in SPSF as we consider new service areas such as on-line programs, parttime students, and possible larger scholarship amounts to address the challenge of food insecurity. Together there is so much we can do. With each day on the job, I am excited to see the power of commitment. Over 92% of SPSF scholars graduate. Compared to the state average of 38.5%, it is easy to see why we are committed to the SPSF mission. It works! The success lies in the commitments of the scholars in reaching their goal of higher education, in the board who give of their time and wisdom to lead us, and in our donors who provide resources that can be utilized to meet our mission. It takes all of us, working together, to provide scholarships, nurture families, and create new futures. As Margaret Mead said, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.” Here at SPSF, we are committed to changing the world by empowering single parents to improve their lives through education. That is exciting!

N EW B O A RD C H A I R We have had a very busy and productive year at Single Parent!! In April, we hosted our first With Your Help fundraising luncheon. Many of you were a part of the 200 guests that attended. Thank you for coming to the luncheon and for your support. Yvonne Wiebelhaus-Brahm joined us in August and has hit the ground running as our Development Coordinator. One of her biggest impact areas has been launching our SPSF:101 Ambassador Program. This is a great way for friends and family and co-workers to learn about the mission of SPSF. Please give Yvonne a call at the office if you would like to learn more. We are happy to take it on the road! At the end of October, Karin Bara stepped down as the Executive Director to spend more time with her family. Just a few of the many highlights of Karin’s four years with SPSF include helping numerous students, implementing a new and successful fundraising program, and completing our first three year plan. You may still see Karin around the SPSF office as she assists in the transition to our new Executive Director, Lori Lynch. We are excited to introduce Lori. She joined us at the beginning of November. Lori has jumped right in and is already an integral part of SPSF. She has exciting ideas for helping our scholars succeed, and is already contributing to our strong organization. Brittany Richards, SPSF Program Director, has been working extremely hard on several fronts. She has been working with our students on Budget and Finance issues this year, has engaged with students at our partner campuses, and has been instrumental in the implementation of our new fundraising program. This year, we received a joint grant with the Museum of Discovery from the Charles A. Frueauff Foundation. Through this grant, the Museum of Discovery hosted our graduation celebration in the spring, provided family memberships to our scholars, and hosted an SPSF-only night of family fun in November. This grant has brought tremendous joy to all of our current students, alumni, board members and their families. The Board members of SPSF have been so dedicated. Every member has played an important role in the successes of this year. Please know how much you are appreciated and valued. Have a wonderful Holiday Season!

Every good movie has a hero who faces incredible odds, yet still manages to save the day. But it’s hard to be a hero. Because in order to amaze us, the hero must accomplish the seemingly impossible. Every once in a while, though, we get to meet a real hero. Someone who overcomes every obstacle. Someone who creates their own opportunities. Someone who refuses to quit. Someone who rises above the circumstances of their life no matter how difficult, and reaches for something better. And when we meet that someone, we’re not just amazed…we’re inspired. Well everyone, meet Michael Fleming. Michael is a nursing student at UALR and just earned his Associate of Applied Science in Nursing this past May. He’s currently working towards his BSN and plans to continue on to a Masters in Nursing Education. Very impressive goals for a guy who only a few years back never dreamed of attending college. And why nursing? Michael was raised by his mother and grandmother, both healthcare professionals who worked very hard to care for him and his five siblings. His grandmother, in particular, assisted seniors and regulary boarded a patient in her home. “Growing up I didn’t really understand the significance of what my grandmother was doing. I just knew that there was a room in the house where old people who needed help stayed.” When Michael was older, his grandmother asked him to help care for her patients, but it wasn’t long before she didn’t even need to ask. “I liked knowing that I was making a difference for these people who couldn’t care for themselves.” That sense of compassion and willingness to nuture has stayed with Michael ever since. Michael’s life took a turn, however, when family hardship caused his mother and grand-

mother to move to California. Though Michael was the youngest, his siblings all looked to him for guidance and support. At only 16, the responsibilities of work and family were too much and began to affect his schooling. Consequently, Michael was never able to finish high school. For years, he worked and took care of his family, but Michael didn’t want his story to end there. He was able to get his GED at 19 and started college at 22. It was a brave decision considering very few of his friends and family had even attended themselves, but Michael knew an education was the only way to change his life. This past May, Michael became the first person in his family to graduate with a college degree. While exciting, he considers his degree a responsibility as well hoping to be a role model for those close to him. No one more so than his young daughter K’Mya. “It was very important to me that she be at my graduation. I wanted it to be a memory that really stayed with her and influenced her future.” Only six years old, K’Mya has watched her father attend school for most of her life and already has an appreciation for education. “When she has homework, I can tell she isn’t always happy to do it. But she never argues about
it because she understands that learning is a responsibility.” That sense of determination and discipline is definitely the key to Michael’s own success, and he is grateful for the opportunities it has afforded him. But this single dad hasn’t done it without help. SPSF has been one of his biggest supporters throughout his journey. His scholarship money allows him to spend less time working and more time raising his daughter. “Providing a quality of life for K’Mya is very important to me,” which for Michael means being a very active parent. “I like to take her to ethnic restaurants and use that time to teach her a little about other cultures.” He also attends PTA meetings and is able to provide health insurance for K’Mya. All things his mother was never able to do for him. “Her life is so different from mine.” Of course the hardest part of being a parent is teaching by example. “Above everything, I hope K’Mya can learn from my accomplishments. I want my daughter to grow up knowing she can do
anything she wants to do.” But even after the scholarship money is spent, SPSF is still there to “save the day,” and Michael is incredibly thankful to be part of such a unique program. “I walked into the office one time, and Brittany could just tell something was wrong.” After talking with Michael, Brittany Richards, the Program Director of SPSF, found that he was struggling with one of his classes. She immediately connected him with Eriana Williams, an SPSF alumni and nursing graduate. Eriana was able to tutor Michael through his class which he successfully passed. “Without SPSF, I would have probably failed that class and been cut from the nursing program.” The SPSF community has reached out to Michael in so many ways out of genuine concern and a willingness to serve, and that kindness has made a big impact on him. “I admire the donors and staff so much just for being good people. Thank you, SPSF.”

Family Fun & Service Weekend A Night Of Fun
8 www.spsfpulaski.org
A Day Of Service This year, the Charles A. Frueauff Foundation awarded a grant to the Museum of Discovery. As benefactors of this grant, current scholars received one year-long family membership per family and the opportunity to experience our first ever SPSF Family Fun & Service Weekend! Friday, November 13th, over 100 of our scholars, alumni, board, staff, and their families came together at the Museum of Discovery to enjoy various science demonstrations, animal encounters, and activities in the Tinkering Studio. A pizza dinner rounded out this wonderful opportunity for our students to enjoy time with their children and connect with other single parents. Several of our scholars have wanted an opportunity to give back to our community, so Service Saturday was born! On Saturday, November 14th, forty of our students, alumni, board, staff, and their children volunteered at the Arkansas Food Bank packing food boxes in the warehouse. Everyone had fun while helping those in need and families enjoyed a private lunch at the Whole Hog CafĂŠ afterwards. The weekend was a great success and students are asking if they can do it again next year! 9 www.spsfpulaski.org
With Your Help Giving the Gift of Education April 9, 2015 This past spring, we held our first ever With Your Help fundraising luncheon at the Pleasant Valley Country Club Ballroom. Close to two hundred guests were given the opportunity to listen as the children of our graduates and scholars kicked-off the one hour luncheon announcing new careers and future goals for their parents. Among several generous donations received that day, we also had sixteen new members join the SPSF Giving Circle by pledging multi-year gifts. We are so thankful for the opportunity to share how SPSF is providing scholarships, nurturing families and creating new futures.

October 6, 2015 This year’s annual A Night of Hope event was held at the Pulaski Technical College Culinary Arts and Hospitality Management Institute and chaired by Arita and Tom Jewart. Almost two hundred guests enjoyed a variety of delicious foods prepared by PTC Culinary Students under the artistry and direction of Chef Ducrot. Our guests and long term supporters were given the opportunity to mingle with one another, scholars, alumni, and meet our newly hired Executive Director, Lori Lynch. Highlights of the evening included hearing from Bonnie Nickol and current scholar Robin Jefferson.
