Parents, look for the milestones to learn what to expect from your baby by age 1, and the tips for how you can help.

MILESTONE: Points to show someone what they want

TIP: Talk about what your baby wants when they point at something.

Baby helps reach his toes. Lick, stretch... to his nose.

MILESTONE: Puts out arm or leg to help with dressing/cleaning; points to body parts

TIP: Ask your child to label body parts.

Baby jumps in the stream. Splash! Splash! What a team!

MILESTONE: Repeats sounds or actions to get attention

TIP: Talk to your child about what you’re doing. For example, "Mommy is making your breakfast."

Baby waves. Blows a kiss. Bye bye Baby. Bye bye Sis.

MILESTONE: Uses simple gestures like waving; copies gestures

TIP: As baby moves around more, stay close so they know that you are near.

Baby gives Raven lunch. Have a bite. Crunch. Crunch. Crunch.

MILESTONE: Shows interest in a stuffed animal by pretending to feed it

TIP: Encourage pretend play.

Baby climbs on Mommy’s back. Read a book. Take a nap.

MILESTONE: Hands you a book when they want to hear a story

TIP: Read with your child every day. Have your child turn the pages. Talk about the pictures using simple words.

Baby claps. Hip, hip! Hooray! Sis is home.

MILESTONE: Has favorite people

Time to play!

TIP: Play with blocks, shape sorters, and other toys that encourage your child to use their hands.

TIP: Build on what your child says or tries to say, or what they point to.

TIP: Help your child feel safe and loved.
