DIABETES
RESOURCE GUIDE Southern Plains Tribal Health Board Oklahoma Area Tribal Epidemiology Center
INTRODUCTION The Oklahoma Area Tribal Epidemiology Center (OKTEC) is a division of the Southern Plains Tribal Health Board (SPTHB). The OKTEC receives core funding from the Indian Health Service (IHS) Cooperative Agreement with IHS Division of Epidemiology and Disease Prevention. OKTEC coverage area includes Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas and serves the 44 federally recognized tribes in that area. As a public health authority, the OKTEC works with area tribes, state agencies, tribal organizations, academic institutions, non-profits, and many other agencies to provide a wide range of resources. The SPTHB and OKTEC promote healthy communities while strengthening all tribal nations. This includes helping prevent or manage the ongoing diabetes epidemic among American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) people. In the United States of America in 2015, 86 million people had prediabetes. That data is from the American Diabetes Association whose mission is “To prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes. Diabetes is a condition that is prevalent in various populations, but AI/ANs are especially affected. Due to the diabetes epidemic among AI/ANs, Congress established the Special Diabetes Program for Indians (SDPI) in 1997 by providing funds for diabetes prevention and treatment services. Through this funding, AI/AN communities have developed diabetes prevention programs and services that have provided access to quality diabetes care using evidence-based practices. This resource booklet will provide information related to diabetes. It contains data related to the existing burden of diabetes in Oklahoma and includes a list of programs available to help those with diabetes and pre-diabetes. The goal of this resource guide is to increase collaboration and resource allocation between tribes, communities, urban Indian health organizations, as well as others. 1
