Q1 2016
Report
1
Welcome to the quarter one report We kicked off the year with our smoking cessation campaign, run in partnership with the Health Services Executive (HSE). The campaign responded to our readers’ concerns about ‘social smoking’ by providing information about how to cope with smoking triggers, whether on a night out or in everyday situations. In January, we also launched our new EU Parliament Information Hub funded by the Parliament and produced in partnership with The Wheel. We were very grateful to the EP Vice President Mairead McGuinness for taking time out of her hectic schedule to launch the project. Dublin MEP Lynn Boylan also spoke at the launch and recorded a video with us about her campaign to see Irish student Ibrahim Halawa released from unlawful detention in Egypt. Elsewhere in Q1, we also ran our annual Sexual Health Awareness Week campaign, as well as ‘Have Fun, Get Fit’; a campaign aimed at finding fun, alternative ways to getting 30 minutes of exercise each day. We also ran a campaign to encourage our readers to register to vote in the General Election, as well as a Voter Helpdesk. ‘Til next quarter, all the best, Ian Power, Executive Director.

 How we did in quarter one 3
Our readers in quarter one This was the first full quarter since our new website design went live, and we have noted some small gains in all of the metrics we monitor. We continued averaging over 100,000 sessions and over 80,000 readers per month. Mobile, pageview and bounce metrics are all positive indicating the new site’s quicker load time is leading to more mobile use, more internal clicking and fewer abandoned sessions. Traffic on the site depresses during major holidays, and Easter fell in this quarter, accounting for the low overall growth for the first three months of the year (Easter fell in Q2 in 2015).

Editorial in quarter one The editorial team were busy this quarter creating new content for a number of our annual campaigns. A refresh of all smoking-cessation content took place in late December and early January in time for the new year. The general election at the end of February saw lots of legacy content updated and refreshed and new young candidate profiles added to the site. Our sexual health campaign again focused on the issues of consent and encouraging readers to get regularly tested for STIs. We also spent much of the quarter adding new content to our new European Parliament Information Hub, including bulk upload of the factsheets and videos started in Q4 last year and also the weekly news round-ups of the parliament’s activities.

EU Hub In January, we were delighted to have Vice President Mairead McGuinness launch our European Parliament project in SpunOut.ie HQ. The Hub is a great resource for anyone who wants to learn more about the EU and its institutions and keep up-to-date on European news. As part of the project, we also held a very successful Facebook Live Q&A with MEPs Lynn Boylan and Liadh Ní Riada.

Sexual Health Campaign In February, we hit the road with the Union of Students Ireland as part of Sexual Health Awareness and Guidance week. During the week, we spread the message about the importance of getting tested for STIs, highlighting where people could find their nearest free clinics. We also used the week to start a conversation about consent with students in GMIT, NUIG, IT Carlow, Dundalk IT, National College of Ireland and IADT.

Have Fun, Get Fit For this year’s physical activity campaign ‘Have Fun, Get Fit’, SpunOut focused on promoting enjoyable physical activities that would be suitable for anybody whether they enjoyed sports or not. We created numerous factsheets and video content on a range of alternative physical activities, that challenged the narrative that getting fit has to be difficult and unenjoyable and helped young people to get active in a way that felt fun for them.

Election / Register to vote 2016
Our coverage of this year’s General Election served several functions. Firstly, we wanted to provide young people in our audience with the information they needed in order to register to vote. Secondly, we wanted provide information that could help them make informed voting decisions. This included providing up-to-date news, information about candidates, as well as sharing practical voting information. We also ran a ‘Voter Helpdesk’ through which young people could contact us through email, phone, text or Twitter with queries about voting.
