The singular approach of the artist Elizabeth Addyman is inspired by people’s personal collecting habits. 100 questionnaires were sent out to the artist’s family and friends - delving in to what they collected and why. The 52 replies became the inspiration to create the 52 objects presented in the exhibition – each object representing each of the replies.
Much of Addyman’s visual inspiration can be attributed to her childhood spent in Tokyo. Immersed in a culture that greatly values art and craft practice, she was brought up admiring both traditional and modern objects. The experience also provided her with a first hand view into the world of kitsch.
