Positive start

TMFC started the 2012 season off by hosting the first monthly comp of the year. By Wednesday before the event 17 competitors had confirmed there entry. By the Sunday morning six of those had cancelled due to various reasons. He ended up with a final So that left 11 entries which score of 54.46, not a bad is still a positive start to the start at all. Kurt lost directions a couple of times with how the maneuvers should look. After the second round he finally got it right for the third flight and winning the class, only just ahead of Stuart, who, had finger trouble, the connection between brain and finger had been lost because on the first and second flight he had a couple of grass cutting maneuvers and heart stopping moments, but all ended OK with a very respectable third flight. (Phew) Marc was the only F3A entrant flying the (p). Last weekend Nazeem crashed his Quantum, so he was out for this weekend, I have heard he has a new plane on the work bench and will be out the next comp. Marc once again flew the schedule gracefully and to the normal high standard that we all come to accept from a top F3A pilot. Finally thanks to Low who ran around all day keeping the event running smoothly,

a good CD is the key to catering for large entries. We managed to get the scores done during the day, thanks for your help Nazeem and Greg, a BIG plus to announce the scores at the event. And to the Judges, Martin, Nic, Bernus and Kas who gave up there Sunday. And finally to TMFC members who gave up a reasonable flying Sunday for MAASA to stage a Pattern comp. The next comp is on Feb 5 at HRF, this is the first league and Masters qualifying event of the year, so, if you want your scores to count and be added to the National Score sheet you must be a paid up MAASA member, visit www. maasa.co.za for application. See you in two weeks.

KZN - January

MODEL AEROBATIC ASSOCIATION OF SOUTH AFRICA

KZN Pattern Day Just as we found last year here, it is a lovely venue, with lots of shade trees, neatly cut grass, a lake, and a view, combined with a gracious host club who set it all out for us with a good braai at lunchtime. Thank you Dave Charls and the Valley club members! Thank you also to our judges Bruce and Des, for their efforts on our behalf. Also thanks to Leon and Jason who together with Dave laid out the markers before the event. Most of our flyers have benefitted from the recent coaching session by Ivan Olivier. I think we actually like flying at 150m out. It takes away the vagueness of people flying at different distances, and gives us a target to aim at. The distance is nice and close, where the plane can be seen easily by judges and pilots. We did not have the problem though of a strong wind along the pattern line, which makes the rolls very rushed. Our wind was fully crosswind, and everyone seemed to cope well. In Sportsman, Speedy pulled ahead after some worthwhile practicing. Dave Greer has now updated to a 60 size Wind, and did well, but it is still being sorted out. In fact at our competitions we see more and more of the planes flown being the Wind design of one size or another. I am surprised that the enterprising Chinese plane factories cannot compete with these.

8

In Masters and F3A there were no surprises, as Mark and Jason came top again. The total entry of 12 is another show of support for our pattern, with a couple more flyers who could not fly for various reasons. I think it is successful because it is like having another “club, of guys who get together every six weeks, and enjoy the social side as well as being brave enough to subject your flying to critical eyes. GAA monthly - snoopy’s 05 february

Then the rain came down The first Gauteng pattern monthly of the year is traditionally held at Snoopy’s Squadron in Krugersdorp and this year was no different.

The members of Snoopy’s and the Krugersdorp community turned up in their droves to watch, after the event had been advertised in their local newspaper. Rarely, if ever have so many cars and/or people been seen at a pattern monthly competition. Looking at the finely manicured grass runoff areas it would have been easy to think you were at a KZN field. The grass looked so good that quite a few pilots seemed to prefer landing on it! We had 22 confirmed entries for the event and with a 7am pilots briefing and first flight at 7h30 we looked forward to a long days competition. With one or two noshows and a couple of the pilots giving up their flying to assist with proceedings the day got underway with 17 pilots. The GAA implemented a Failsafe safety check during the first round. The intention was for the airplane to be securely held on the ground and with the motor at fast idle the TX is switched off. With the TX off the motor should reduce to a slow idle or ideally turn off all together.

I think that everyone had tested their models before the event as it was pretty much a clean sweep with small niggles being sorted out quickly. Nevertheless, safety first was the motto of the day.

Sportsman Class

Even with the reduced number of pilots it was a tough push to get through two rounds by lunchtime. Our taskmaster CD, Danie Potgieter (snr) gave us 20min for lunch and we were looking forward to a 3h30pm finish when the rain came down. Fortunately it only lasted a short while and we were able to complete 3 rounds each with thunderstorms visible all around us while Snoopy’s was bathed in sunlight. Our thanks to the Snoopy’s committee and members for making their facilities available and to Danie Potgieter our beloved Contest Director, Iain Pepper and Roston Dugmore (snr) for the scoring as well as John Clements who put in a 9hr day on the judging line together with all the pilots who assisted with judging.

WP League 1 - hrf 05 FEBRUARY 2012

Heat Wave HRF hosted the first league comp of 2012 with a very healthy entry. By Wednesday before the event 15 competitors had confirmed there entry. By the Sunday morning 4 of those had cancelled due to various reasons. A very hot day greeted the pilots. 34c was the forecast with a 10-20km wind. The weather man was spot on, thank goodness for cool drinks and shade.

It was then the battle of the Sportsman pilots. The regulars, Tim and Rory where joined be Gabrial who has made the move from the Novice class.

Brian Bowles was first to fly, another young and inspiring pilot for Langebaan to take up Pattern, great to see and well done. Not easy to stand in front of four judges and 10 other competitors. Unfortunately the other 4 entries in his class never arrived, but for Brians first comp, well done.

Gabriel won the first round and gave the other two something to think about. Unfortunately that was Gabriels best round which left Rory and Tim to fight it out for first and second place. Rory put the pressure on and was in a league of his own and won the second and third rounds to give him the overall victory.

Brian Bowles first comp with the help of his dad...

14

Advanced next, and the terrible twins, Greg and Andre. Andres first season in Sportsman showed that he was going to be a force this year and the others will have to watch out. Andre won the second round but Greg was one step ahead and won the first and third round to give him victory, although the final score was very close, Andre did ask Greg if he had lost his way calling on his last round... that debate will go on for a while!!! Masters next, Brian Bowles joined in the fun but found it rather tough to keep up with

regulars, Kurt and Stuart. Kurt still with his 2 stroke Genesis put in some great flying but not quite good enough and ended second behind great score by Stuart and his Osmose. Finally Marc and Ernie, (returning to Pattern after a few years) where the only entries in F3a, Nazeem had crashed his Quantum a few weeks back and his new plane wasn’t finished. Marc, once again showed us how it should be done or was he just showing off now he has competition at last.

BO LEAGUE 1 - BOMAC 04 MARCH 2012

Great for kites!! The weather forecast was warm with a slight breeze and the possibility of some showers, wow! did they get it wrong.

A rather later start than printed in the program but once the flight line was put out and the pilots had been briefed, judges in position, all was set for a great comp. 15 entries had confirmed for the event, on the day 14 took part. Novice started the day, Brian’s second comp, Aidans first comp. Aidan did have a dead stick on his first and third flight which was a shame because he was very competitive. In fact his second flight was the same score as Brian but with his two dead-sick rounds gave the win to Brian. Sportsman next. Four entries saw a close fort battle between all pilots. Gabriel in only his second Sportsman comp found it harder then most. Richard Lacey, father of Novice pilot

18

Aidan was a close second behind Pieter Kapp with Mario third and Gabriel fourth. Mario was flying his faithful Swallow, he is still having trouble with his Quantum but I think once he gets that sorted he will give the rest serious competition. Richard flying his very pretty CA model Zapharo, electric power 90 size plane is getting used to the plane and power, Pieter better watch out at the Western Province champs, the top three are very close. Andre was the only Advanced pilot, flying his Passport, he had a hard time in the changing conditions, yes by now the wind had picked up and was gusting up to 37km, blow-in as well, which not only did Andre find it tough but everyone found the conditions hard work.

Dry, very WINDY conditions most of the day tested the skill of all pilots

BOLAND

BO LEAGUE 1 - BOMAC 04 MARCH 2012

Andre’s scores showed how he battled. Hopefully next time Andre, the competition will be other pilots and not the weather. Masters class saw the regulars. Good to “see” John Calefato back. First round was clearly won by Stuart with his faithful Osmose. Second and third round scores got worse as the wind had become stronger and all pilots found it really tough as the scores showed, except for John Calefato who pulled out a fantastic flight to win the third round. But it as Stuart with winning 2 rounds took the overall class win. F3A, now with three pilots, Nazeem with his brand new Neptuno, stunning plane, Ernie with fixed landing gear, Quantum and Marc with Beryll also found the conditions hard. Marc winning the first round, Nazeem doing half rolls instead of quarters, a distant second. Ernie, third but did find the reason why his plane was all over the place, not the wind but loose Elevator

hinges, phew! that was a close call and retired for the second and third rounds. Nazeem picked up the pace for the second and third rounds but still couldn’t catch Marc. The conditions where very difficult, a very strong crosswind with gusts of up to 37km challenged all pilots and it was great to see no damaged planes. Thanks to BOMAC, the entry of 14 pilots we had expected to take all day, even with the later start we still managed to finish all three rounds by 3pm. Thanks also to the Judges and stand-in judges for sitting out all day, wasn’t pleasant.

“Not just a Pattern affair A great weekend despite the weather which offered us the odd shower, but mostly sunshine was the order for the weekend. A heathly entry of 14 pilots had entered Pattern with 3 of them entering the other disciplines.

Sportsman had 4 entries, which was closely fort throughout the weekend. Unfortunately Pieter Kapp and engine issues and had to pull out after the first round, shame as he was in a class of his own. So it was left to Rory, Tim and Gabriel to fight it out, it was Rory who won the class

class but Greg cancelled his entry which left Andre to fly against himself. He did however improve with every flight. Masters next and the normal entries of Stuart and Brian where joined by John and Gerhard on the entry sheet but the latter two pulled out which left just Brian and Stuart to fight for 1st place. Stuart, again showed good form with the Osmose winning all 4 rounds. F3A was between Nazeem, Ernie and Marc. Marc was the clear winner of the class winning all 4 rounds, Nazeem had motor mount issues to start, but showed good flying in the final 3 rounds. Ernie tried hard but came in third. But, that was not the final result, as due to technical issues, Marc and Nazeem had there scores stripped which left Ernie the winner, I am sure that’s not the way he would like to win, but then rules are rules. A big thanks to the judges, HRF, Louw as CD and the pilots for making another WP champs a great event.

Story/Photos: Grant Brook

PILOTS/JUDGES CLINIC – JOMAC Friday night, 30 March, it poured with rain. In the early hours of Saturday morning there was a thunderstorm of note. Anyway, 6am on Saturday morning Ivan Olivier (GAA and MAASA Chief Judge) and myself arrive at Johannesburg Model Aircraft Club (www.jomac.co.za) to host the 2nd Pilot/Judges clinic in Gauteng for 2012. The venue was organized at a week’s notice and all credit must go to the JOMAC Committee and members for making the facility available at such short notice. What a beautiful morning. The air was crystal clear and you could see the hot air balloons doing champagne breakfast flips over the Magaliesberg. There was just enough cloud to remind you of the storms the night before. By 06h30 we had 8 pilots and 3 judges with a couple of groupies pitching up to see what they could learn for free. Bob Skinner and Chris Theron (Limpopo Province) arrived as well as our stalwart CD, Danie Potgieter Snr. All three judges (and our CD) will be presiding at the 2012 F3A Nats to be held at Barnstormers (www.barnstormers.co.za) at the end of April.

John Brink unveiled his new F3A “Stealth” ship. Purportedly based on the Peridot designed by Wolfgang Matt. It would be interesting to get the original designers comments on the conceptual changes made by John. The morning passed quickly with Ivan, Bob and Chris giving their opinions of the flights (and hopefully picking up a few tips on the way!) The clinic ended with an excellent brunch organized by Pierre Marais and Danie Potgieter Jnr. What a pleasant way to spend the morning with people that share a passion for RC precision aerobatics.

High standard of flying Started off as enthusiastic as always with pilots arriving from everywhere early on Friday to make the event worthwhile. Anyone could see the quality of flying already at a very high standard at this time of the new season. Thanks again to Bertie and organizers for a most enjoyable competition at Central Radio Flyers Bloemfontein.

FS CHampionships - CRF bloemfontein 16 -17 march

Unfortunately all events have some mishaps and Ruston discovered that he lost his software of the “Wind S” when switching on Friday morning. Lucky with his skill and André’s help everything was in place and operating normal by Saturday morning. Ruston was in the air on Saturday morning without any problems. Around 10:00 AM the wind speed started picking up and separated the pros and the players. Still no one was put off and flew very high standard flights. During the 3 rounds flown Saturday standings changed in most of the categories except the number one pilots in the Masters and F3A. Unfortunately Walter had to withdraw after 2 flights discovering that his plane did not make the weight limit. Exceptionally high quality fights were flown in the F3A fourth rounds by André and Calvin. Calvin showed that there was a new pilot to consider and took the honor of the fourth flight in the preliminary schedule.

FREESTATE

Francois had some struggle in the fly-off because initially he did not plan to fly the F. So he had to go home early Saturday evening to practice on a flight simulator. The Masters class was dominated by Burt Botha from Port Elizabeth. Advanced class was taken by the international pilot all the way from AbuDhabi. The one and only Stefan Coetzee senior. We were very fortunate to have him here. Lots of position changes took place during the rounds in the Sportsman category. Lastly were taken again by Stefan Coetzee junior. The weather on Sunday was the best we could ask for. As seen on the results, the quality of flying was of a very high standard through the competition. The Saturday evening party showed off again the hospitality of the Free State. Don’t miss out next year.

KZN Non-League - HIMEVILLE 15 APRIL

Another very pleasant day was had at Himeville. Good weather, with a bit of crosswind just to keep everyone on their toes. As usual Arthur did a superb job of manicuring kilometres of runway, and organised an efficient braai. With electric mains, beautiful setting, and a shade hangar, what more could we want? It is a bit of a distance from Durban, so we had a smaller entry, but flyers should not feel obliged to come if they think it is too far. In Sportsman Speedy got a deserved score of over 60%, and Colin Addis got used to

the Zenith plane he has gone back to after a mishap with his Venus. In Masters Mark put up a good performance, and Arthur threw us a few zeroes just for fun. I was the only flyer in F3A, and was happy with the flying and the judging standards. I have just recently realised how fortunate we are in KZN to have such a good flying site two or so hours drive from the coast. Many years ago KZN modellers used to flying at 2000ft would arrive at a field in the Highveld at 5000ft and the engines needed some setup changes, which often

handicapped our competitiveness. Also the flying changes a bit. Using electric power nowadays the engine problems go away, and we are fortunate to be able to test the flying characteristics before traveling up to the Nationals. Thanks to the judges Bruce, Des, and Ian, who gave consistent scores, and received good practice. We held a short meeting, and discussed issues relating to pattern. We congratulated Arthur Eggar, as the new MAASA vice chairman, and are pleased that a KZN member is a now one of the committee.

...I’ll have to practice more!!! EVENT Communication Update

By Clinton Carter-Brown, chairman Gauteng Aerobatic Association

Competition Dates: Friday, 27 April to Sunday, 29 April 2012

Competition Venue: Barnstormers Model Flying Club, Gauteng

The Aerial Concepts 2012 Model Aerobatic Association of South Africa (MAASA) Nationals was hosted by Barnstormers Model Flying Club (www.barnstormers.co.za) in Kempton Park Johannesburg 27-29 April. This prestigious event showcased the very best talent in the art of precision aerobatics. The contest director was the ever capable Danie Potgieter Snr, who did a great job keeping us all in line. The MAASA Chief Judge (Ivan Olivier), arranged a comprehensive panel of 9 local judges, including himself, Christo Rust, Bob Skinner, Chris Theron, Bertie Viljoen, Kas Hamman, Bruce Clarke, Sebastiano Sacca and Fred Wilkinson. Via a generous donation from Pepper Racing, we were very fortunate to be able to bring Tom Erik Sørensen out from Norway to judge at the event, and to share his knowledge and experience with our local judges and pilots. Tom Erik has judged the last 5 F3A world championship events, and is one of the most highly ranked and rated international F3A judges. He is also a regular judge on the European F3A World Cup,

30

and has been invited to judge at numerous events internationally. His insight into judging was most informative. During the planning phase of the event it was clear that the required duration (3 or 4 days) was heavily dependent on the number of pilots that would participate. The initial responses from the MAASA regional structures indicated an expected 35 to 40 pilots. Detailed planning for a 3 day event commenced, as we could comfortably cater for 40 pilots with the 2 flight lines at the Barnstormers club. As the entries rolled in it became apparent that the number of pilots had been underestimated, and we ended

GAUTENG

SA NATIONALS - BARNSTORMERS 27-29 APRIL 2012

up with a total of 50 pilots (15 of which entered in the last 48hours making re-planning of the event impractical). It is fantastic to see the steady growth in the numbers of pilots participating in national and regional events. It bodes well for the future, but does place additional demands on the organisers and officials. The breakdown per class was 14 Sportsman, 5 Advanced, 10 Masters and 21 F3A pilots. In particular it was good to note the large numbers of entries of young pilots such as Gabriel Nefdt, Michael Sacca, Justin Lees, Daviid Swanepoel, Stephan Coetzee and Ayrton Valente. We also saw the return of some old hands to national completion, such as Christopher Harris, Chris Zurinskas, FC Hamman and Rui Martins. The 2012 Nationals was the first of three team selection events to determine the F3A pilots that will represent South Africa at the 2013 F3A World Championships that is being hosted by South Africa. There was serious competition to have the honour of representing South Africa on home soil. In alignment with the formats flown at major

international competitions the 2012 Nationals F3A class was structured as a fly-off event. All F3A pilots flew 4 rounds of P13 (preliminary) schedule, with the top 7 pilots progressing to fly a further 2 rounds of F13 (flyoff) schedule. The final pilot positions are based on a combination of the P13 and F13 round results. These P13 and F13 schedules are the same schedules that will be flown at the 2013 F3A World Champs. 21 pilots in F3A presented a serious challenge to the contest organisers. This required 84 P13 schedules and 14 F13 schedules to be flown in 3 days, plus demonstration flights. Consideration needed to be given to the workload on the judges, need for breaks, sun position on the flight lines, and the requirement for some flexibility in the event that there was a weather delay. After agonising over different options and permutations Grant Brook’s considerable effort on optimising the flight draw resulted in the F3A class being split into two groups, with four judging panels. It mirrored the approach used at the world champs, and sees

each group of pilots flying in front of the same panel of judges, on the same flight line, at the same time of day but on a different day. The Monday and Tuesday before the event saw miserable rainy weather hovering over Johannesburg. It appeared that the Western province participants had sent some of their weather our way. Fortunately it cleared as the week progressed. The early morning mist at Barnstormers saw pilots only take to the sky around 9am on Thursday for official practice, but the mist never returned and all three competition days started on time, without incident and without a drop of rain. As it was a competition the wind naturally had to blow, with the wind sock horizontal for most of the flights making it tough flying conditions. The official practice day on Thursday saw more than 20 pilots fine tuning their preparations. Demonstration P13 flights were flown for the judges. The two flight lines looked like a full blown competition, with rows of 2m pattern planes awaiting their

turn on the “line”. The welcoming function and pilots briefing was held at the Glen Eagle estate club house, and saw the MAASA Chairman (John Brink) welcome all pilots and officials. The event was opened, and with the assistance of the chief judge and contest director the arrangements were communicated and specific questions attended to. The following 3 days of competition was exhausting but most enjoyable, with fierce rivalry within all classes. Pierre Fouche has to be commended for capturing the hundreds of score sheets into the scoring system, whilst himself also competing in the Masters class. In several of the classes it soon became apparent as to who the main contenders were. The splitting of F3A into two groups however meant that the actual positions only became clear at the end of the 4th round of P schedule. So only on late Saturday could pilots confirm if they had done enough to make it into the final F round fly-offs.

The 7 fly-off F3A pilots were Andre Stockwell, Jason Barker, Pierre Marais, Calvin Schroll, Marc Wolffe, Danie Potgieter and Christopher Harris. The F3A F13 fly-offs attracted a great deal of attention, and clearly nerves as well. The F13 schedule itself is demanding of both pilot and aircraft, with numerous knife edge components, integrated rolls and snaps. It demands the highest level of control and accuracy. I flew one of the demo F13 flights for the judges and had managed to get through most of the horizontal figure 8 with 2 integrated rolls (performed about 30meters above the ground) when an aggressive rudder input resulted in a very near death experience for my poor plane. My shattered nerves held out and I managed to rescue the plane, but only just in time. It was no doubt very entertaining for the judges and my fellow pilots. The flying of all classes was completed by 3:30pm on Sunday, and the awards function dinner was held at the Glen Eagle estate.

Congratulations to all of the winners. The top three positions in each class received an engraved acrylic trophy as well as a cash prize donated by Arthur Eggar. Top honours in F3A went to Andre Stockwell, and only one normalised point separated second and third places, with Pierre Marais narrowly beating Jason Barker. This event saw the introduction of the Arthur Eggar South African national junior champion floating trophy. It is awarded to the top placed junior pilot (under the age of 18). This year that honour went to a very deserving Roston Dugmore Jnr. It was furthermore very interesting and encouraging to see the youngsters clean up in the Sportsman and Advanced classes. The future of precision aerobatic is bright given the pool of young talent that is moving up the ranks‌ .I’ll have to practice more!!! Arthur Eggar kindly donated a Stihl weed-eater which was raffled, with the collected monies going to the MAASA judging fund to help

support judging exposure to international judges and events. The lucky winner was Andre Stockwell, much to the amusement of everyone present. Andre now you have to use it! A final thanks once again to everyone that was involved in the event, and in particular to our main sponsor (Aerial Concepts) and the Barnstormers club for the use of their excellent facilities. Thanks to George Sly and the Barnstormers committee for the excellent arrangements and facilities at the field, as well as the members of Barnstormers for giving up their valuable flying time. The aero-scout association assistance with the running of the score sheets from the judges to the scorer is also greatly appreciated. As is customary the MAASA Annual General Meeting was

held to coincide with the nationals. Congratulations to Arthur Eggar on being voted the new MAASA Chairman. There are a number of new committee members with Nazeem Harris taking over the treasurer role from Bertie Viljoen, and Richard Wiedemann becoming the new MAASA secretary. Andre Stockwell has moved to Vice Chairman, and John Brink will be focusing on International relations and in particular the hosting of the 2013 World Champs. Stuart Nix will continue to do a sterling job as National PRO and maintaining the http://www.maasa.co.za website. My thanks to the outgoing committee for the excellent work they have done, and lets all give the new committee our full support. The next year is going to be an exceptional one for precision aerobatics in South Africa.

here in KZN there were none in advanced. Our pilots have been discussing the proposed rules for next year.

They agreed that it is a big step to go up from Sportsman to the new Advanced A14 schedule class, it is generally agreed with. The new idea of next year the Masters ying the P13, and F3A the P and F is well liked.
