FOR CREATING A WELCOMING HOME 1 TOUCH THE WALL One of the ways to decorate your walls is with wallpaper. Whether subtle or showy, wall coverings can elevate your interiors by introducing texture and patterns. As colour trends gear towards soft hues and earthy, sun-baked tones, consider wall coverings in these colours to enhance the look. The Bazar collection by BN is inspired by the rich colours of Marrakech. Want to mix patterns? The trick is in pairing large with small patterns for a harmonious look. BN Bazar Collection, $171.20 per roll, available at Goodrich Global

2 THROW IN STYLE Bringing texture into interiors is essential to a welcoming abode. Even when most elements of interior design are in place, living spaces without texture feel flat. Texture is important in how we perceive a space would feel. It softens hard edges and planes with ease. An effortless way to make a living room pop? Add a throw on one of the seating options, be it the sofa, settee or armchair. An ideal material for Singapore’s weather is cotton. A light cotton throw like this one is perfect for cosying up with your loved ones on the sofa on rainy nights. Waffle plaid throw, $145, available at BoConcept
3 COLOURS THAT SOOTHE

Above all else, colours are key to creating the setting you want. For small apartments, stick to neutral hues like white, beige, grey and introduce accents of colours. Of note, Dulux’s colour trends for 2018 reflect many urbanites’ desire for slow living. If you wish for the home to be a space for relaxation, seek balance through a harmonious use of colours. It’s essential to keep contrasting colours to a minimum, so strong shades of red like crimson are a no-no. Instead, work with warm tones such as terracotta and rust or pastel pink and grey hues.

4 WALL OF FRAMES

What is a home? It is a place of comfort and ease where you can lounge around in your pyjamas, and share life’s joys and challenges with your loved ones. More than a built structure that keeps you safe, it is also a vessel of memories. Thanks to technology today, most of us have photos of our loved ones on the smartphone. However, creating a gallery wall that holds photos of treasured moments adds intangible warmth to the home. For a surprise element, we recommend mixing family portraits with works of art made by you or your children!
5 MIX AND MATCH YOUR CUSHIONS Cushions on the sofa are not only perfect for afternoon naps, but they also add volume to your living area. To choose your cushions, start off by identifying the three main colours in your space. Then, look for cushions that carry any one or all of these colours. Doing so ties the look of your space. The next question would be, how many? If you have a contemporary interior, go for three or five cushions. The traditional look favours symmetry, so opt for an even number of cushions. Avoid overwhelming your sofa with cushions by keeping to a maximum of four or five for a three-seater sofa. In addition to the standard cushion size, consider mixing it up with rectangular or larger square cushions. Trevino pillows, from $109.95, available at Crate & Barrel

7 SOFT UNDER YOUR FEET The Danish concept of hygge champions texture as a major contributor to that feel-good feeling. Texture should also appeal to your feet too! What are some of the areas that your feet would love to sink into a rug? Aside from the living and dining areas, try placing a rug by your bed. Your feet would love the feel of a plush rug as you rise in the morning. Also, look into adding soft furnishings like bath carpets for your bathroom for that luxe feel! Memphis bath carpet, $75, available at Departures & Arrivals
6 MAKING SCENTS Scent is an often-overlooked aspect of cosiness in the home. Aside from appealing to the sense of smell, the soft light produced by the flame evokes serenity. Scented candles come in all shapes and sizes. But a unique design is a bonus that adds to your interior. The back-to-nature vibe of the Hiba candle adds a rustic touch to living spaces. It is made of Aomori Hiba, a tree native to Japan and called a “tree of life for its long lifespan and resilience. Aside from its anti-bacterial and insectrepelling properties, it produces a unique, woodsy scent that calms the mind and spirit. Hiba candle, $98, available at atomi
8 MOOD LIGHTING In addition to general lighting, also take note of accent lighting. Mood lighting creates an atmospheric glow that brings a sense of comfort while you unwind to the television or acoustic tunes at night. Opt for lighting pieces with bulbs that give soft and warm yellow illumination instead of a bright, white light. FADO table lamp, $19.90, available at IKEA

THESE DARK MATERIALS Complement dark grey surfaces with unexpected pops of colour for a hint of character and warmth. Using a dark palette in the kitchen definitely has its advantages – messes and mishaps are easily forgiven!
tip Light grey tones have a soft quality and can contribute in visually opening up a space.
GREY AREA Image courtesy of Gautier
There are a lot of things going for grey. Softer than black and neutral enough to complement a wide range of colours, this tone is the perfect base for just about any interior style. In fact, this go-withanything shade makes for the perfect neutral backdrop for brighter and louder pieces to stand out. Love colours? A grey wall is the perfect counterpoint to let your furnishings, accessories and art shine.

OPEN SESAME

Far from appearing cold and cramped, this grey-toned dining space exudes a welcoming vibe thanks to the inclusion of dark wood surfaces and a semi-open concept floor plan that invites plenty of light to flow through. Keeping the surroundings uncluttered are plenty of storage solutions, which are perfect for stowing pantry essentials neatly away.
tip While lighter greys are can make a space feel relaxing, darker greys tend to give off a trendy, industrial vibe.

SPA AT HOME Grey also translates well into the bathing zone. Opt for natural stone-like surfaces to evoke a spa-like atmosphere in your private oasis. Streamlined fittings, woodgrained surfaces and warm lighting are prefect complements to stone-inspired surfaces that imbue a sense of relaxation to this space.

LIGHT TOUCH
SOLID GROUND
An all-white kitchen can be a tad predictable. Adopting a white and grey scheme in the kitchen is more interesting. To create an airy atmosphere, add sufficient task lighting if your cooking zone is not blessed with an abundance of natural light.
While the black and white combination is a true classic, the resulting look can be harsh. Pairing a white backsplash with just a bit of dark grey furnishings and accessories in the cooking zone has the same ultra-sleek effect without looking too much like an industrial kitchen.

NEW WAVE
SEASIDE SHADES Like a sundrenched beach on a bright morning, milky whites and vanilla tones brighten the interior and set the perfect backdrop for ocean-inspired colours to take centre stage. A hint of sandy shades adds depth, while grey’s cool and calm demeanor gives your dwelling a more contemporary slant. Extend your canvas of neutrals beyond the walls and ceiling – even the furniture and soft furnishings

should be flooded in pale hues. Once the foundation is set, anchor the look with shades of muted blues and greens. And then make your seascape pop with small measures of turquoise, navy, and, if you dare, red. Take note that weathered colours exude a more calming ambience, while richer tones like navy or indigo project a handsomer vibe especially when juxtaposed against crisp whites.

BEACHSIDE STYLE

The new standard in beach homes is here. Out with the shells and nautical symbols; a subtle nod to this style makes a greater impact. In this modern oasis, interiors are laidback and seem to be perpetually flooded in sunshine. Colours that speak of the sea run a wider spectrum to ensure versatility, while furnishings maintain a weatherworn appearance although boasting trimmed down silhouettes to make space for more in tiny apartments.

Bring a little shimmer into your coastal space with metallic accents such as brass fittings as a glamorous centrepiece.
BLUE HUES The neutral foundation of whites and creams brings to focus the room’s wonderfully textural appeal. Patterned throw pillows that are cleverly chosen in a consistent shade of blue add interest, not busyness to this vignette.

COASTAL CHARM
SEA VIEW

No shells or natural symbols; the new coastal is discerning with its arsenal of accessories. Try to steer clear of anything cliched or kitschy. Seascape paintings and vintage bird prints summon the right look, while postcards and maps add a nostalgic old-world vibe into the space. Bring the spirit of the sea into your home with glassware infused with watercolour tones that reflect the ocean and shaped with graceful curves for organic appeal. If you’d like to pepper your home with memories, choose whitewashed frames with clean lines to keep the look updated.
To put the mind at ease, declutter. Storage pieces in washed timber tones feel lived-in – as if they’ve been yours forever. Although driftwood looks the part, it’s not widely available. Go for fuss-free alternatives such as reclaimed wood furniture or pieces that boast the weathered effect without the hassle. And what’s a coastal resort without greenery? Make houseplants your new leafy companion: they inject a sense of tranquility into your home and help purify its surroundings.

KICK BACK The mood is relaxed in a seashore home – because every day should feel like a beach holiday. To suit dawdling activities like lounging lazily with a magazine in hand or kicking back with the family, the living room should be fitted with a good-sized cushy sofa upholstered in a durable but kind-to-skin fabric like linen or cotton. Accessorise with patterned or colourful pillows – in shades of blue, obviously – to accompany snuggling sessions and also to counter the lackluster effect of the theme’s mostly-pale setting. The same formula can also be applied in the master suite.
tip Oversized foliage with huge glossy leaves instantly transports you to a tropical paradise, while colourful flowering plants make a vibrant addition to your little slice of haven.
WEATHER REPORT Image courtesy of Norsu Interiors
If you have a balcony, create an alfresco seating space for unwinding on languid days or catching up on conversations over coffee. Keep the area as breezy as possible with a ceiling fan, and dot it with potted plants to blur the lines between the indoors and the great outdoors. For the sake of privacy without sacrificing the sense of openness, choose bamboo blinds or lightweight sheers that let light and breeze in easily.

BRING IN THE BREEZE
Natural materials that are roughhewn and weather beaten or tough enough to stand up to the fierce outdoor elements are at the very crux of the seaside style. Think wood that’s been bleached by the sun and battered by the weather. Take reference from this go-to material, and head for new wood that’s been whitewashed especially when it comes to carpentry work.

A method of incorporating dark hues into your interior includes outfitting it with toned-down navajo patterned rugs and throws, brightening up navy kitchen cabinets with metallic details, or using an old-school map of the world as wall decor. GET A GRIT

The masculine interior gets its rugged swagger from hardworking materials like bricks, wood, steel and stone. But while it’s just as moody in character, be careful not to confuse this style with the industrial style. Think sleek concrete style tiles, a nightstand with hammered steel for legs, or accessories such as a stoneware vase. With woodwork, stick to deep and warm browns like walnut or mahogany. Although both rough and smooth finishes work, try not to apply too much of the former lest you find yourself in industrial territory.

Design by Free Space Intent
MAN UP Aesthetics-wise, the masculine interior is predominantly sheathed in moody shades and interspersed with a few key furniture pieces that are constrained within a similar palette. There’s a strong preference for textures as opposed to patterns, as well as an emphasis on the simplicity of form over flouncy trimmings. Although this look conveys strength, there’s a cocooning aura of warmth that makes such a dark and handsome room so inviting.
tip The keywords are streamlined and tailored – stay away from anything overly curvaceous, dainty or decorative. Go for function without frills, but with tons of flair.
TOP FORM

Suit up your space with a few statement furniture that exudes strength and masculinity – but they shouldn’t be overly bulky such that they would overwhelm a room. Make your hero piece a Chesterfield sofa or a well-padded sectional in the living area; and for the dining room, pick a table that keeps arm jostling at bay as well as a sturdy sideboard for stowing away your favourite serving ware. Surround with other pieces that are restrained in design like a sleek leather armchair or a side table that’s modern and minimal.

THE AVERAGE GEO

Geometry is played to its finest in this bathroom befitting a masculine inspired master suite. Wood-effect laminates on the countertop augment the space’s rugged appeal, while tiles that bedeck the shower area contrast with the theme’s general moody palette.

Your go-to hues? Take reference from the night sky. It’s never completely flat. The multifaceted blanket of colours that covers the sky runs the gamut from the deepest ink to enigmatic shades of magenta and indigo. That said monochrome isn’t the only option. Deep rich hues such as charcoal grey, hunter green, navy blue, chocolate brown and burgundy can also be part of your palette. Paint makes the most transformative change – so go ahead and wield that brush.
DEVIL IN THE DETAILS
Design by 0932 Design Consultants
Contrast keeps the space alive. To prevent your room from feeling overwhelmingly dim, create contrast with colours or textures. But incorporate these in small doses. White never fails, but you can also try throwing in a punch with an unexpected scarlet, tangerine or gold. When it comes to textures, look to smooth materials such as metal, marble and glass. These counterpoint rough-hewn surfaces beautifully. Plus, they’re great for opening up tight spaces. Sit a pure white sofa in a sea of black, pick an end table made of polished chrome, or hang beige linen curtains – and see the tactile mix of materials meet and clash beautifully to create your dark but happy place.
Design by Free Space Intent
CLEAN CUT As the style gets its appeal from a handful of large elements rather than layers of accessories, invest in well-chosen pieces of substantial and statement-making furniture. But this doesn’t mean accessorising isn’t necessary. Go easy on the trimmings and restrain from placing too many decorative items on shelves, tables and countertops. Try dressing up a wall instead with a painting, an art installation, or a collection of blackand-white photography. Storage is also an important factor in keeping a dark den tidy.

GO SMALL

Rather than committing to a paint job or a big-ticket item, you may also choose to take baby steps by injecting colour into your personal living quarters a little at a time. What you can do include dressing up your bed in dreamy hues; introducing small kitchen appliances in candy tones; as well as hanging a pale light fixture atop your dining area.

QUAINT ACCENTS
Design by The Monocot Studio
The effect that polished glassware as well as metallic accents like gold and copper makes when mingled with ultra-femme tones. Think gilded mirrors, wardrobes with shiny pulls, or polished light fixtures for a truly luxurious room set in discreet colours. On the other end of the style spectrum, bringing in a few statement minimalist pieces in moody hues creates unexpected drama in a place with none.
tip
THE GREAT WALL The pastel trend has come a long way from its debut in the 1950s till today where home dwellers are eagerly hopping onto the bandwagon, particularly since these subdued hues have the prowess to open up tight spaces. This, thus, makes them perfect for studio apartments and pigeon-hole dwellings. We love how pastels are just great on their own, yet plays nice with others. Pick your favourite and let it set the mood in your room, or explore the rainbow and play a game of mix-and-match. Keep your space engaging with contrasts.

Keep the pastel scheme subtler than usual when it comes to domains dedicated for getting your R&R. Dreamy hues like lavender or dusky blue will transform your room into a sanctuary of calm.

SOFT FOCUS
5 6 idealhomes
Add white to a pure colour, and you get a tint – or pastel. This sweet palette’s first foray in interiors dates back to the retro era in the ‘50s where shades like pink, turquoise, mint green, pale yellow and blue were paired with bolder tones to make a powerful design statement. Ranging from delicate almost-white tints to light-yet-bright hues, this muted rainbow spectrum gives homeowners the versatility to explore with more. We show ways you can work pretty into your dwelling, and transform it into something pretty stylish.
Sugary shades might feel girly, so avoid anything overly ornate. To achieve a look that spells chic apartment rather than creepy dollhouse, pay attention to the bones of the furniture. Whether you’re going for a pastel-on-pastel effect or enlivening your interior with a punch, keep the look crisp by opting for contemporary pieces with a clean and streamlined aesthetic. Take reference from Danish style furniture such as a fabric-tufted sofa with tailored lines, or go minimal with pieces that sport sleek silhouettes and minimal frills.
tip A super affordable way to introduce a hint of pastel into your home is with fresh flowers. A vase with a posy of peonies or sprigs of lavender will fill your room with a delicate burst of colour and a lingering scent.
MIXED MEDIA With this pretty palette, texture is necessary to balance its girlish tendencies. Get your cues from Nordic interiors by combining pastels with natural finishes such as pale wood to ground the look while maintaining an airy appearance. Textured fabrics such as a chunky knitted throw, a braided rug or even a fabric sofa also help to keep the look in check.
tip
DRESS IT UP What’s great about the pastel trend is how you don’t have to go through a full-fledged refurbish of your apartment to give it a brandnew look. Simply start your revamp with a fresh spot of paint, and then achieve the look with key furniture pieces and accessories.

Neutrals – either crisp white or jet black – make unfailingly stunning complements to saccharine tints, while unexpected pairing of hues such as rose and taupe creates impact. To avoid your interior from appearing too sickly-sweet, bring in touches of light grey.

BLANK SLATE A soothing scene is just the perfect antidote to a stressful day. To create a home replete with chill-out vibes, start with a white or offwhite background. Then complement it with wood-textured furnishings and accessories. And to keep it as clutter-free as possible, be sure to install sufficient built-in or hidden storage units to keep things in order.

Here’s a feature wall idea for your personal space: woodgrained laminated walls. This interior decor trick, when contrasted with a bold hue, looks surprisingly modern and design-forward.
ORGANIC FANTASTIC The widespread love of modern designs and symmetrical lines may often cause a design to look too cold and rigid. A mixture of handmade texture breaks away from the cool exterior of darker schemes, while still retaining its chic factor.

START WITH THE BASICS To create a relaxing atmosphere at home, start with a neutral backdrop. Furnish it with neutral tones juxtaposed with a smattering of colour. Stick to a minimal palette to keep it visually quiet. Don’t forget to add plenty of soft furnishings for a cosy vibe.
tip If privacy is an issue, install sheer curtains at the window to allow some natural light to filter through.

Natural, organic elements can be surprisingly good bedfellows to industrial and contemporary interiors. One way to do that is to complement raw, unfinished surfaces with wood elements or botanicals. These will add personality, colour and cosiness to an otherwise impersonal space.

JAPANDI
BEST OF YOU
The best bits of Scandinavian and Japanese design meld to bring you a new take on minimalism
tip Most Japandi rooms start with a base of a saturated neutral; build up the look as you layer on the colours bit by bit through accent pieces and decorative items.
With the parents’ affinity with wood, it’s of no surprise that their progeny shares the same sentiments. Scandinavian home loves pale wood like oak and blonde timber, while Japanese dens are crafted with the elegance of darker, stained timber. Along comes Japandi who deftly pairs and mixes the two together – shaking things up and creating dramatic aesthetic contrast. The result is an interior that is never flat – but beautifully layered in tone and texture.

TIMBER LAND
STARK CONTRASTS Greens are also a staple in Japandi domiciles – but the look is more Zen than Jungalow. Think large-scale plants with a strong presence and simple form, or an elegant foliage that fits atop tables and along shelves. Time to go wild.

ALL ABOUT THE BASE The light and airy atmosphere that fans adore about Nordic interiors hails from its trademark palette of neutrals with a touch of pastel. Japandi borrows this muted colour scheme and introduces warmer tones of indigo, charcoal, olive green and a touch of black into the mix. This results in a palette that runs the scope from the soft and wispy to richer, more saturated notes. This gradient of dark and light hues means the contrast that is created from the juxtaposition of colours isn’t as stark as, say, minimalism.
tip In a domain that favours function over form, accessories are few but impactful. Swap ornaments and strictly decorative items for several statement pieces to make the decor aesthetically cohesive. To get a hint of what you should seek out for, take a peek into both Nordic and Japanese homes. The former prefers accent pieces that focus on comfort including plush rugs, cushions and woolen throws, while the latter is more partial to utilitarian items like ceramic pots and vases or shoji screens. Get a good mix of both in your home, but remember that less is always more in the land of the ethnic blend.

NO-FRILLS THRILLS
When mixing wood tones within a space, always do it in moderation. It’s safest to stick to a maximum of three. For example, contrast dark wooden furniture with pale wood tone floors, and accentuate with mid-tones that appear as details.

NOD TO NATURE
Design by Studio FortyFour
Japandi’s infatuation with natural materials goes beyond merely timber. As the style draws upon the ancient Japanese aesthetic of finding beauty in imperfections – also known as wabi-sabi – it’s of little surprise that it takes a whole lot of inspiration from Mother Nature’s backyard. These natural textures, raw surfaces and organic forms balance the look’s minimal tendencies and help to warm up its otherwise austere appearance. Introduce these elements into your domicile with stone or concrete surfaces, woven jute accessories, textured fabrics such as linen, or gorgeously misshapen hand thrown ceramic vases. If you’re keen to explore rustic Japanese elements, opt for furniture made of bamboo or furnishings inspired by the delicate art of origami.

The Japandi home is uncluttered and airy with a few thoughtfully selected pieces of quality. This “less is more” ethos that both its parent styles agree whole-heartedly on stems from the duo’s emphasis on creating purposeful living spaces. So, expect functiondriven furniture while accessories take a backseat. Here, furniture pieces are simple, timeless and comfortable – and they’re perfectly suited to take up residence in an equally humble and restful interior.

GO LOW
Design by Studio FortyFour
A design movement that born out of the amalgamation of maestros in minimalism, Japandi is a modern hybrid style that draws inspiration from light and bright Scandinavian homes and melds its emphasis on function over form with the timeless elegance of Japanese aesthetics. It also inherits the idea of wabi-sabi – an ancient Japanese philosophy of finding beauty in imperfections – resulting in a surprisingly versatile design formula that home dwellers can easily explore with.
Take reference from traditional Japanese furniture and consider low-lying pieces. They’re great for encouraging the bounce of light across a room. A platform bed sans headboard, a low table or daybed, or benches and stools help enhance the sense of spaciousness in the interior.
Design by DB Studio
MEANINGFUL OBJECTS Utilitarian aspects aside, there are a few notable differences that homeowners should take note of when it comes to furniture design. The layman might not notice much disparity, but experts in the industry can easily distinguish between Scandinavian and Japanese pieces because each possess extremely distinctive features. While the former is characterised by a modern farmhouse feel and comprises primarily of pale wood, the latter is more refined and features more elegantly curved shapes with wood finishes that are stained or painted. For your own Japandi dwelling to take root, achieve harmony by ensuring a good mix of pieces from each look.

KEEP IT SIMPLE Expensive homes boast the luxury of space. But if you have to work around a petite floor plan, keep it simple and clean. tip Accessorising with plenty of plush throw pillows is an easy way to dial up the sumptuous vibe in the living room.

BRING OUT THE CHINA Dressing up your dining table for everyday meals is a great way to make eating at home feel like a treat. You don’t have to splurge on expensive china to make it look upscale. Simply choose timelessly elegant pieces and complement them with some gilded accents. Don’t forget the flowers for a restaurant-worthy finishing touch.

“As this unit is on the first floor, we took advantage of the high ceilings to create a grand living room feature wall and a loft bed structure in the master bedroom” Yin Jye, Weiken.com@Midview City
1 LIVING + DINING

As they share the same space, the livingcum-dining room sees the use of streamlined furniture pieces like a slim television cabinet and a narrow coffee table to ensure ample walking space all-around. Meanwhile, next to the built-in kitchen island unit sits a loose set of dining furniture. This allows the homeowners to move it out to the balcony to create more space indoors or simply when they want to unwind with friends and family outdoors.
2 FEATURE WALL Upon first entrance into this two-bedroom condominium unit, one would be immediately struck by the grand television feature wall. With its marble laminated finishing, the towering wall design is a sight to behold as it is both classy and easy on the eyes. As too much marble would have overpowered the whole space, the designer paired it with grey wallpaper and black tinted mirror to create a balance of textures while still maintaining the high-end contemporary ambience that the homeowners wanted.
3 ENTRYWAY Along the entryway, the customised shoe cabinet was clad in white laminates to match the style of its surrounding furnishings and fittings. For visual interest, a part of the cabinet was transformed into a glassfronted open shelf. Featuring marble-effect laminates, the open shelves give the space a personalised touch, with the display niches housing decorative ornaments and letter lights of the couple’s initials.

4 MASTER BEDROOM

To fully maximise the full 4.5m ceiling height in the master bedroom, designer Yin Jye constructed a loft structure that allows the homeowners to use the newly constructed space for sleeping, and the bottom for other daily necessities. Set against a textured grey wallpaper and timber-effect laminates on the floor, the space exudes a cosy and romantic ambience when accompanied by the warm light given off by the pair of sconces.
tip A clever yet out-ofsight way to increase the number of storage solutions found in your home is to convert each step of a staircase into pull-out drawer units.
5 WALK-IN WARDROBE A room predominantly used by the female homeowner, the walk-in wardrobe features an expansive tinted mirrored feature wall that she can see herself in after she’s done with her dressing needs. Opposite, a series of floor-to-ceiling wardrobes house her extensive bag and clothing collection. Creating a boutique-style display, the designer made use of tinted glass for the wardrobe doors, which can be seen through when the LED lights are switched on, but are blacked out when the lights are turned off.
