Founded by our Design Director May Chang, she has two decades of design experience. Her vast knowledge and expertise have served our firm well as it has propelled from a tiny but passionate design studio into a 2000-square-foot showroom with over 10 designers. Her first design company in Johor Bahru folded due to the poor economy but she persisted and did not bow down to failure. The plucky designer soon got her break when she started afresh by launching Meter Square in Singapore and the rest is history. Now an established design name

May Chang FOUNDER

What made you want to be an interior designer? I was working in the banking industry before stepping into interior design, and I really hated being holed up in the office from 9 to 6. I find that I have a very strong desire to design and I really enjoy the mixed exposure of working inside and outside of the office.

If you weren’t an ID, what profession would you be in? A film director or photographer.

Best piece of advice you have been given? And the worst? Best: Do what you love and love what you do. Worst: Some people will never change & you just have to accept that.

What was the last Instagram post you liked/posted? My photo, which was taken at Airplane Graveyard Bangkok.

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be? To stop being lazy and just exercise!

10 years from now, what do you think you will be doing? Sitting at the beach and enjoying a glass of wine.

Daphne Gan SENIOR DESIGN MANAGER

What did you want to be when growing up? I actually wanted to be a police investigator. I thought solving crimes and being a policewoman was cool! I love mystery novels.

What is your greatest indulgence? My VW Golf GTI. My car is more than a mode of transport. It’s my buddy and companion.

Best piece of advice you have been given? And the worst? The best: “Life is never fair”. The worst was to stay on in a bad relationship.

What brings you the greatest joy?

What is your favourite film of all time?

Taking a long drive along an empty highway on a cool night alone and listening to music on a good audio system.

The Greatest Showman. It has a great mix of actors and musical performances, and a great story that teaches empathy and values.

Mint Ng

ASSISTANT DESIGN MANAGER

What is the one thing you wish you knew when you were younger? To appreciate designs of old buildings and the thoughts and consideration that went into their designs.

What talent would you most like to have? To read minds so I can instantly understand what homeowners like and want in their design styles.

What is your greatest indulgence? The occasional splurge in designer bags.

What brings you the greatest joy? A successful renovation and the happiness of the owners when they pick up the keys from me.

What do you value most in your friends or colleagues? Integrity

Michelle Than DESIGNER

What made you want to be an interior designer? When I was young, my parents brought me along to visit different kinds of interior showrooms. I was fascinated by the interior decorations, furniture and the facade of these showrooms. Therefore, I always wanted to have my own home to design and decorate in future.

Jayden Leong DESIGN CONSULTANT

What is your phone screensaver at the moment? Body sculpture

What did you want to be when growing up?

What brings you the greatest joy?

No particular profession, but my childhood dream was to earn a lot of money and to enjoy a comfortable life with my family.

What talent would you most like to have?

What made you want to be an interior designer? Actually, I stumbled upon this industry by accident. However, it soon became my aspiration to design a good home to meet all my clients’ lifestyle needs.

What was the last Instagram post you liked/posted? I recently liked one of a NBA star’s posts.

What is your favourite film of all time? Too many to just choose one so I’ll just go with an action flick.

What do you value most in your friends or colleagues? Their honesty and willingness to help.

Spending time with family and friends.

I wish I could dance.

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be? My confidence

BEST LAID PLANS

Everyone has different living needs so figure out your living plans first. For instance, will you be staying in your place long-term like a family or retirement home, or would it be a short-term stint? Do you have plans to rent out or sell your HDB BTO flat unit after five years? All these answers can determine how extensive you want your renovation to be.

8

NOT THE END

After renovation work has ended, it’s time to finally move in right? Well, except there is still the matter of rectification works. Do keep in mind the major defects may take up to a few weeks to be resolved.

7

T I P S

DO NOT DISTURB

As to not disrupt the progress of the renovation, homeowners should do their site inspection once a week.

6

THE BIG PICTURE

Visualise your space before buying large pieces of furniture and appliances. Besides bringing along a tape measure, you should also bring along the floor plan to the furniture stores for a clearer picture of what fits where.

4

TO

2

Who will be staying with you? Are there kids or pets in the picture? Do consider their lifestyle needs besides your own and incorporate it into your renovation plans. If you are doing up your existing home, you also need to figure out if everyone can stay in the home during the renovation, or to find temporary accommodation.

A

stress-free 3 R E N O No more stress! The experts at Meter Square offer these golden rules to make your reno journey a smoother journey.

5

BACKGROUND CHECK

QUALITY PRIORITY

Skimping on the things you use and touch every day is a big no-no. Things like doors, hardware, faucets, appliances and cabinetry will have to endure daily wear and tear so quality should not be compromised because of budget.

DON’T SWEAT THE SMALL STUFF

With countless reno decisions to make, be firm on three of your main renovation wants and then be flexible on the rest. Trust that your ID is a trained professional and this will simplify the process without you becoming too stressed out during the process.

4

RESEARCH

Do ample research to better understand the scope of the project. This will give you a clearer idea on the return of investment and the timeframe. You will also have a better insight on the trending products, materials and designs.

R U N D O W N

What to expect and what to prepare from the start till the end of your renovation

FIRST CONSULTATION Communicating your design brief to your chosen ID is an integral part to start the renovation on the right foot. Here’s what to prepare for the first consultation:  Floor Plan  Details on who’s living in the home and any specific lifestyle needs/concerns  Mood Board: A compilation of rooms and ideas to convey your design vision and preferred colour (warm or cool) and design styles

BUDGET Be upfront about how much you can fork out for your renovation with your ID. If budget is tight, channel funds towards important essentials such as the walls, ceilings and necessary wet works.  Factor in an extra 10 percent into your reno fund for unexpected costs such as new wiring works or electrical works.

SITE VISIT Checking out your new pad for the first time is always exciting. Do remember to look beyond the surface and carry out your own inspection for defects, especially for new BTO flats or condominium units.  Take plenty of photos for each room or better yet, a video tour of your entire home for future reference.

RENO COMMENCES Keep the place as uncluttered as you can during the course of the renovation. Staying organised will help tremendously when it comes to the final clean-up.  Set aside an extra room such as the storeroom for storing lighting or built in appliances such as the hob, hood or oven.

TIMELINE On average, a renovation can take around four to eight weeks to complete. However, unforeseen material shortages or electrical faults can contribute to an extended renovation period. Always factor in additional buffer time; especially if you are renovating a resale flat or apartment.  Secure temporary accommodation in the event of delays.

POST RENO  CLEANING: Schedule the cleaning for the floors, cabinetry and window frames after the renovation is done and before any bulky furniture arrives.  DEFECT CHECK: Look out for faulty butterfly hinges, slightly slanted or hard-to-press electrical faceplates, uneven painting touch-ups and uneven silicone coverage on the edges of cabinetry.

Who lives here: A family of five and their cat Project Type: 6-bedroom condo penthouse Floor Area: 2,802 square feet

The High Life Well-maximised storage compartments and warm neutral tones transform this condo penthouse into a home fit for family life and stylish entertaining.

Reno period: 10 weeks Budget: $131,000

Living Area Blessed with high ceilings and full-length windows, this condo penthouse’s bright and airy visage inspired the Meter Square design team to incorporate a modern contemporary theme. Their instincts did not fail them as the result is a clean-lined modern haven. The high ceilings are maximised by full-height custom carpentry and the designers even carved out a standalone counter to cater to their entertaining needs.

Kitchen & Dining Separated into dry and wet kitchen zones, the cookspace is fronted by a sleeklooking breakfast counter. It is embellished by a chic ensemble of mirror strips and matte and glossy laminate finishes. The kitchen overlooks the dining area which has been separated from the living area to create a more formal setting. 6

DESIGN NOTES: A strong visual anchor such as this staggered arrangement of TAK Bronze Ingot laminates creates a bold visual demarcation for the dining space.

Common Bedroom Light-coloured laminate finishes translate into a timeless and modern design scheme for this room.

Master Bedroom A warm colour palette of wood-effect flooring and laminate finishes fills this room with an inviting appeal. To better faciliate the room for rest, relaxation and other functions, a divider segegrates the space to provide privacy.

Who lives here: Young couple Project Type: 5-room HDB flat unit Floor Area: 1,200 square feet Reno period: 6 weeks Budget: $44,000

Calm & Collected Taking style cues from the evertrending Scandinavian style, this home for two combines streamlined simplicity with dreamy pastels for a fresh style take on tranquility.

Communal Areas Concealing the bomb shelter with custom carpentry added a seamless touch to the overall space. The designers also carved out more storage and even incorporated a settee to put on footwear in comfort. 8

Living Area Awash in natural light, the Meter Square designers enhanced the spacious appeal of the living zone with a wallhung TV console and light wood textures.

Dining Zone An arresting focal point with a three-tone treatment of colours graces the dining room wall. These soothing pastels are a great complement to the blue kitchen cabinetry in the open-concept cookspace.

DESIGN NOTES: Using brick walls or Craftstone coverings will require higher maintenance, so try wallpaper for a similar textured look but minus the fuss.

RENO TIP: Rather than hack away an entire wall, introduce another entrance for the walk-in wardrobe. That way, this room can be converted easily into a separate room like a nursery or study.

Urban Warehouse Edgy textures and streamlined designs emulate a personalityfilled NYC loft setting for this three-bedroom condominium unit.

Reno period: 8 weeks Budget: $182,000

DESIGN NOTES: Use a similar application of homogeneous flooring tiles between different zones to blur the boundaries and evoke a spacious impression.

Communal Zones A solid visual anchor of dark grey wall paint frames the open-concept kitchen with a strong industrial aesthetic. 10

L iv ing A re a For a visually impactful focal point, the Meter Square designers engaged tiles which present varying brick tones for the feature wall. It sets the scene for a relaxed and weathered backdrop which lets the family enjoy cosy moments together.

Dining Zone While the industrial style can appear stark and cold, the team injected a welcoming undertone to it through warm neutral colours and brick wall tiles. They hacked away the boundary walls between the dining area and kitchen to create a larger communal zone for familial bonding and entertaining.

DESIGN NOTES: A matte-glossy pairing of subway tiles with grainy laminate finish not only nails an ontrend style, it brings out the best in a lightfilled space.

K itche n The light-starved kitchen issue was resolved by erecting a skylight through the clay roof tiles.

RENO TIP: Don’t forget the valuable space beneath the stairs! This neglected area can be put to good use by installing cabinetry and shelving within the space.

Elegance Discover resilience and practicality within the luxurious styles of VULCAN, a porcelain series at Lian Hin which is changing the face of stone-effect surfacing needs.

T

he look of natural stone can impart much sophistication with its gorgeous veining, but the nature of the stone itself doesn’t quite stand up well to daily wear and tear as compared to engineered stone. For a multi-faceted product which exudes both beauty and endurance, VULCAN emerges as a large-format compact porcelain surface, which is manufactured by advanced Italian machinery and innovation. With hard-wearing qualities such as high resistance to impact, heat and fire, VULCAN is also highly resilient to stains and scratches despite its slim and lightweight appearance. Most of all, the highlysophisticated Italian technology ensures pigmentation

is locked within each slab which reduces the occurrence of the colour fading over time. That said, customised aesthetics such as desired designs, colours, textures and finishes can be incorporated during the fabrication process. Since it requires minimal maintenance, it works well as a countertop surface for the kitchens and bathrooms, flooring or as a decorative feature wall. Since gaining traction in European and American markets, VULCAN is all set to take over the local design industry as a worthy surfacing contender. Available exclusively at Lian Hin, VULCAN will definitely enhance the form and function of your living space with its beauty and a multitude of practical benefits.

What’s working with Meter Square really like? Here’s what some of the clients are saying… We got to know Mint, our interior designer, through a friend who had also hired her for her own renovation. At our first consultation, we could immediately sense her enthusiasm as well as her fervent passion for interior design. We knew she was definitely the person who would give her best shot to do an awesome job. We would like to compliment her on her design execution as well as accountability. All our questions were dealt with swiftly and it made us feel like we were treated with high priority.”

Chen Dingren & Theresa, MARCH 2019

Peter and I would like to thank both May and Michelle and your team of contractors for an excellent renovation job well done on our home in Country Park. It was so easy to work with them. Not only did they listen and accommodated our inputs and suggestions, they also gave us tasteful, good and practical design ideas. In fact the most important concern for us on the renovation was because we were based overseas, we could not travel back and forth to oversee the project. However our concern proved not an issue at all. Apart from travelling to Singapore twice to confirm the bathroom, kitchen accessories and curtains, May and Michelle oversaw the project for us from beginning to end during our absence. We are extremely pleased with the level of commitment and dedication the team at Meter Square had given to our renovation. The quality, material and craftsmanship of the contractors far exceeded our expectations.”

Peter & Angela Kiddle, JANUARY 2019

…We worked with Daphne of Meter Square. She has a good eye for what works and what doesn’t. She was also very direct, yet tactful about her suggestions. For example, at the start, we thought of closing off the kitchen with glass, but Daphne pointed out that it would look too clunky and that we would lose access to the kitchen counter from the walkway’s direction due the barrier. After some thought, we realised she was right, and we scrapped the idea. Thanks Daphne and Meter Square, for a smooth renovation, creating a home we love and for being such as joy to work with.”

Jason & Emiko, AUG 2019

We decided to engage Michael to work on our renovation based on a friend’s recommendation. Working together with May, they were very experienced, offered good suggestions and always responded promptly to all requests. Problems were solved quickly too. Michael was neat and detailed with the project schedule and always followed it closely. He handled the timeline very well and delivered the job in eight weeks without compromising on quality.”

Let there be light Curtains, blinds or both? Azora helps you decide which window covering suits your home and living needs best.

STYLE When it comes to aesthetics, the common perception of curtains and blinds is that one is ‘soft’ and other is ‘hard’. No prizes guessing which is which; this underlying contrast lends a different appearance to your home. Aesthetically, curtains have pleats which create a wavy look to make the fabric appear softer, and this works better for a home with a cosy theme. Roller blinds are more utilitarian in nature but can be much more practical than curtains in terms of maintenance.

FUNCTION Not just to frame your windows, the main function of curtains and blinds is to minimise or block daylight. This, in the long term, will help to deter sun damage on wood furniture and to lower the temperature of your home. Blackout curtains are the most effective in blocking daylight and these are most commonly used in bedrooms. Blinds are also effective at deterring most of the daylight flow, for instance, Zebra blinds sport dual shade blinds which offer different light settings such as day or blackout ambiences. Slats on Venetian blinds can also be adjusted to offer different light intensities.

MAINTANENCE Washing or wiping? Curtains require the arduous task of unhooking it from the tracks and then throwing it into the wash or to undergo dry cleaning. Blinds cannot be removed and therefore, each panel needs to be wiped down or vacuumed to remove dust built-up. HOME AUTOMATION Specialising in curtains and blinds as well as lighting, bathroom and kitchen accessories, Azora Group offers Somfy home automation products to make light work of drawing your window coverings.
