MADE SMART Connecting the online marketplace with offline food experiences is habitat by honestbee, Singapore’s first tech-enabled multisensory grocery store and dining concept TEXT Germaine Cheah PHOTOS habitat by honestbee
I
n 2015, honestbee was founded as an online marketplace offering grocery delivery services, and it later diversified into food delivery, laundry and ticketing services. But now, the Singapore-based startup is taking its first foray into the brick-and-mortar route with their latest offering, habitat by honestbee. Located in an industrial building next to Mapletree Business City in Pasir Panjang, this new high-tech space is a supermarket, restaurant and retail innovation lab all rolled into one. On top of cupboard staples and daily essentials, this is also where you’ll find farm-to-table produce from established farmers and growers in the region, a wide selection of wagyu and dry-aged meat, as well as a seafood counter full of oysters, lobsters and Alaskan king crabs. As you walk through the sprawling 60,000-square foot space, be sure to marvel at the line of shopping bags flying over your head on overhead conveyor belts. Reminiscent of the door delivery system in the Monsters, Inc. movies, these shopping bags are actually transporting goods into the packing room to be packed for honestbee’s online orders.
If all that grocery shopping leaves you feeling peckish, simply pop into one of the 15 food and beverage concepts on site, where you will find everything from grain bowls and grilled meats to soft serve ice cream and Japanese souffle pancakes. The check-out experience is all rather high-tech. If you’re buying less than 10 items, you can skip the checkout line by using the “Scan & Go” function on the honestbee app, and pay for your items through beePay. But if you’re buying more, you can easily deposit your loaded trolleys at the AutoCheckout station, where your items will then be scanned and packed. Collection for your bags can be processed in as fast as five minutes, where you can then pick them up at a fully-automated robotic collection point. Mobile and tech applications that provide convenient and fuss-free services have become part and parcel of our everyday lives, and habitat by honestbee embodies all of that. All you’ll have to do is come equipped with the honestbee app, and let technology take care of the rest.
INSIDE STORY Apart from F&B, there is also a Beauty Bar in the restrooms, a bodega that features pop-up collaborations and designer items, and a cosy reading nook called Shufu for you to enjoy. The honestbee mobile app serves as your personalised pass in and out of the space, as well as your digital wallet for making all necessary payments.

SPICE UP YOUR KITCHEN Many homeowners are opting to have dry kitchens in their homes. Unlike the wet kitchen where heavy cooking happens, dry kitchens are typically used for preparing drinks and simple meals. Therefore, wallpapers do well here in place of conventional backsplashes. With wallpapers, you’ll also have a smorgasbord of costeffective options to create standout looks for your dry kitchen. They also give you the freedom to make over the kitchen from time to time.

FURNISH YOUR FURNITURE So, you have received small furniture pieces that do not reflect your style. Here’s what you can do: wallpaper them to complement the rest of your space. This strategy works beautifully not only with new pieces. With wallpaper, you can upcycle vintage finds or rejuvenate existing pieces. Be sure to check that the colours of your wallpaper work with the rest of your furnishings.

DEFINE YOUR NICHE Instead of loose or built-in furniture, many homeowners opt to have niches incorporated into their interiors. The upside is the easy maintenance they offer. They also minimise visual clutter by eliminating bedside tables. Make Room conceptualised this bedroom with niches large and small, not only to house the owner’s favourite things but also as a style feature. Here, they, picked out wood-like wallpaper for a beach cottage vibe.
UNDER THE STAIRS A maisonette flat or multistorey landed property comes with pockets of spaces that are often overlooked. Arete Culture styled and transformed the hidden space under the stairs with a sideboard and wallmounted shelves. The patterned wallpaper’s pastel colours keep it looking spacious and make the furnishings pop.

SCREEN LEGEND Screens are a versatile and evergreen solution for demarcating spaces in the home, for instance, to block off a study corner from the living area. It can be stowed away when not in use, therefore creating more space when needed. If you’re looking to work on a do-it-yourself project, consider decking a screen out with wallpaper! A wallpapered screen adds depth and dimension to any space in a jiffy with its patterns and textures.
MAKING ART If you haven’t already, one way to spruce up the home is to decorate your wall with art. Finding the right artwork can be tricky, so expand your search to wallpapers! They provide visual texture that pops from a plain background or brings contrast to the textured walls. For the latter, go for patterns that are of different sizes from the wallpapered wall. From a stretched-canvas to a placement behind glass with a simple or elaborate frame, the rest is up to your imagination.

Instead of textured wallpaper, the wallpaper can bear a soft matte finish to blend in with the ceiling.
MARBLE UP Mouldings are a must-have in classical-inspired homes and even contemporary homes. Why not bring an element of surprise with wallpaper? Marble patterns framed by mouldings, for example, elevate the interior with its mood of sophistication. Having wallpaper on a small section of the ceiling gives you more freedom to incorporate colours and patterns in your furnishings without having to worry about a cluttered ambience.
MAGE COURTESY OF LUXE WALLS
NO LONGER GARDEN VARIETY Many homeowners love wallpapers for adding texture, vibrancy or colours to walls. Want something bold? Consider using wallpapers on the ceiling! This look works in small spaces too. The trick is in keeping the walls and furnishings pared down so that the ceiling becomes the star of the space. Botanical wallpaper, for example, gives an intimate vibe much like what you get to experience in a lush garden.
MAINTENANCE TIPS
If your wallpaper has a protective coat, you can clean it with a sponge dipped in warm water with a small amount of dish soap.
Those without protective coating can be cleaned with a dry sponge to get rid of dirt. Be gentle.
Clean all spots as soon as they appear. Go for clear instead of coloured soap to prevent staining.
For general removal of dust, use a vacuum cleaner. However, don’t rub the vacuum cleaner on the surface. You can also use a microfibre cloth to clean the walls.

he power of aesthetics is well explored in this brand new HDB flat unit. Rather than rushing through the renovation process, which is more so often the case for many young couples, the homeowners, who are in their 20s, decided to take it slow. Making calculated decisions paid off tremendously for their home which is designed by Studio FortyFour. It was an integrative collaboration between the homeowners and designers as they sifted through different colour combinations and unique materials for the best fit.

Hints of pink can be spotted within the grout lines of the tiled backsplash and in the woodgrained patterns of the flooring tiles. These design details offer a feminine style that is balanced by the masculine colour scheme of the counters and cabinetry.
“We wanted to explore and reflect our own individual personalities and creative backgrounds into our home through the use of unconventional materials and quirky design elements,” explain the homeowners. “It’s not just about living well; we wanted to be inspired by our home which also doubles as a workspace for us.” To get their creative juices going, the designers merged softer colours and opulent metallic flourishes – which the homeowners desired respectively – into their living space. Forming an aesthetically-pleasing design harmony with these two main design elements,
the designers also established free-flowing spaces which encouraged work, rest and play. Case in point: The flexible usage of space between the kitchen, front entrance and other communal zones. Double swinging doors now stand between the front entrance and combined living-dining zones. “We specified for an ‘open and closed’ kitchen concept,” reveal the homeowners. The “open” aspect of things refers to its double doors and an awning window to bring more light into the confines of the kitchen. Besides the doors, the designers carved out a serving

window that doubles as a casual breakfast nook. The highlight of this awning is it stays at rest at varying angles. That way, the homeowners get to maintain a good level of interaction with each other or with their guests through this handy window. And with the doors and window closed, this prevents any heavy cooking smells from wafting across the other communal zones. Moving into the kitchen, it’s hard not to notice the pretty botanical patterns on the countertops. Rather than go for the usual worktops in solid colours, the homeowners
decided to go with some bold KompacPlus countertops with etched motifs. They remark, “We definitely wanted to try out something new with these patterns on the countertops.” While it might be easily perceived that these etched designs are cumbersome to clean, the maintenance of these worktops is much more fuss-free than expected. “The cut of the etching is not very deep and this makes these v-cut patterns easy to clean,” add the designers. For the combined living and dining zones, it was all about nailing down the aesthetics of

Visual interest is injected into the entryway through different flooring materials, where hexagonal tiles line the front and is continued by vinyl further inside.
A
s holistic health practitioner and author Dr. Laurie Buchanan once said, “Minimalism is about creating space to live simply and meaningfully; it’s about living intentionally.” And this philosophy is truly embraced and exemplified in the design of this four-room BTO flat in Punggol, helmed by designer Minii Ooi from local interior design firm KDOT Associates. “With the hectic pace of everyday life, we crave a serene and comforting place to retreat into after a long and busy day. And to have a place of their own where they could truly relax and recharge, and to live comfortably, conveniently and aesthetically with less was something the homeowners had desired,” says Minii about the home’s minimalist concept. This then gave rise to the monochromatic colour palette seen throughout the home, which was something the owners had specifically requested for. By sticking to a defined colour scheme, the home eliminates extraneous and unconnected colours that may create visual clutter, which can be just as harmful as physical clutter.
84 DEC
Other specific requests the owners had for their new home was that the design should be practical, offer easy maintenance and encompass a clean look that minimalist interiors are so well-known for. These were then incorporated into the home by simplifying furniture, decor and storage. Evident right from the get-go, clean white walls that are pared down in design and free from any built-in fixtures attribute to the living room’s airy atmosphere. Even so, the space feels grounded and cosy thanks to the grey cement-lookalike vinyl flooring and muted furniture pieces from Castlery. Meanwhile, concealed lighting lends well to the minimalist concept as a decorative element and a source of light. Located on the immediate right of the home’s main entrance is the dining area, where a small section of the space shares the same hexagonal tiles as the entryway. Another distinct characteristic of the space is the dining table-cum-kitchen island, which serves multiple functions as a food prep area as well as an eating surface. Upon first glance, the tabletop may seem like a standalone fixture, but a closer inspection will reveal that it was actually an extension from the kitchen countertop.
