stone’s throw away from the bustling hub of Toa Payoh lies Möbler, a home furnishings store with roots in Sweden. Founded by Emelie Hedén and her sister Ellen, the antiques and vintage concept store aims to bring a new era of stylish home decor to the Singapore market. Since childhood, the sisters have displayed an enduring passion for vintage furniture, and along the way picked up the skills to restore old pieces. Their fascination with old-world furniture was further nurtured during summers spent in their grandmother’s country house in Börrum, which is furnished with a plethora of well-preserved pieces dating from the 1800s. Stepping into Möbler transports you to a different time. With the aim of helping homeowners find their personal

style while promoting sustainable purchasing decisions, Möbler’s 2,217-square foot space has been decked out in an assortment of vintage furniture from cinema chairs to, interestingly, a waffle iron. Each of the 500 furniture and decor pieces here has a unique history, exuding a distinctive charm that is sure to enchant. And with their comforting soft edges and slightly weathered look, these timeless staples will appeal to every design aficionado. To keep their prices low and accessible to the homeowners of all stripes, the one-of-a-kind articles in the Möbler collection has been personally sourced by Emelie and Ellen from their network of antique dealers to ensure its authenticity. Before the duo commits to purchasing pieces to add to their collection, all of them – from the Allmoge and romantic Gustavian styles of the early 1800s, to Jugend and Art Deco periods – are carefully evaluated based on their original design, unique history and quality. They are then lovingly cleaned, restored, photographed and marketed by the duo. A visit to Möbler is a must for all homeowners who are looking to find unusual antique treasures without burning a hole in their pocket.

ith two kids in tow, it’s of no surprise that these young parents chose to relocate from a condominium to a more spacious HDB resale flat. As the timeworn apartment needed an overhaul, they sought the expertise of Dan Wu, principal designer and founder of Dan’s Workshop. Dan’s knack for crafting ideas that are out-of-the-ordinary appealed to the homeowners, so they put their trust in his hands. “I redesigned the home’s original floor plan to accommodate to the couple’s request for spaciousness,” recalls Dan on their correspondences. “They wanted their toddlers to run and roam freely about, especially now that they’re learning the joys of walking. ne great thing about new Executive Condominiums (EC) is that it usually comes with existing fixtures like built-in carpentry works and kitchen appliances. However, that can be a bane or bonus judging by the way one looks at the situation. For instance, these existing fixtures can interfere with the overall style dictated for the living space or it can cut down on the renovation duration and budget. The designers from Versaform definitely took it in their stride when they approached the renovation of this EC unit. The brand new flat has been furbished with a fully done-up kitchen and flooring. At that time, it was up to Versaform to interpret an industrial style: a look that resonates with the homeowners’ preferences.

Besides flooring, the brand new unit comes with a done-up kitchen so the designers’ job was to ensure the appointed Scandi-industrial style would fit right in. A lighter colour palette works well as neutral ground to accommodate the stronger industrial aesthetics.

“The homeowners are an air steward and air stewardess respectively and they wanted to return to a welcoming industrial-style haven,” reveal the designers. Looking at the fully done modern homogeneous tile flooring in the communal areas and parquet flooring in the bedrooms, the designers knew that establishing a full-on industrial look would not bode well in the end. “Hacking away the new flooring and then replacing it with cement floors would be too wasteful, and is neither time- nor cost-effective,” explain the designers. “Therefore, we decided to introduce some Scandinavian elements to match the existing flooring.” With that, the designers teamed the glossy homogeneous floor tiles with neutral-toned walls of grey paint interspersed with a light cement

Laid out in a herringbone pattern, the red brick tiles stretching from the wall to ceiling create an outstanding focal point for the dining space. A small blackboard was also included for a visual break and to offer more functionality. On top, a customdesigned lighting fixture made of a thick wooden bar, metal chains and wound-up wires creates a unique industrial touch to hold the look together.

In May we launched our newly revamped website with a bang by throwing a party at Babette Restaurant & Bar. We were thrilled to spend an afternoon with friends and partners at the event over delicious food, free-flowing drinks and fringe activities as we unveiled the new and improved SquareRooms website. While teaching our guests how to emboss their initials on leather pouches, we also asked the people from Cha Cha Up Tea to conduct tea-tasting sessions. The guys from scent marketing company, AllSense, were at the event helping our guests to figure out their ideal fragrances with a personalised scent workshop too! At the party, we also introduced a new initiative, Brand Story, where we recognise our preferred brands in the interior and design industries. And what’s a party without a lucky draw? Guests who attended had a chance to win amazing home furnishing products from Journey East. Everyone who attended the party also went home with a bag stuffed with goodies from Cha Cha Up Tea and Geberit.

The Entertainment Corner at the SquareRooms x Samsung House Party.
On 22 October, SquareRooms and Samsung threw a House Party specially for first-time homeowners at The Design Store by Lifestorey. Guests who attended the party learnt all about how they can equip their home with the latest home entertainment system from Samsung as well as participated in fun activities. Fringe activities included a DIY station where guests learnt to create their own personalised
paperweight and a scent booth where they could figure out their most ideal home fragrance after taking a quiz. At the end of the party, our friends also got a chance to win amazing prizes in a lucky draw after completing their checklist. Everyone who attended the event also went home with a goodie bag filled with products from 3M Scotchbrite, 3M Command and Samsung.
