AKZONOBEL AESTHETIC CENTER The driving force behind our annual global colour-trend research While the AkzoNobel Aesthetic Center has been mentioned in the previous Dulux Inspiration Gallery editions, it holds more significance than it lets on. It is the heart of the look and feel of the AkzoNobel’s decorative paints business. Conceptualised in 1992, the colour and trend forecasting ensemble looks into the influence of colour to develop and design colour concepts. By identifying social and design trends one step ahead, the colour trends that have been outlined by AkzoNobel Aesthetic Center are set to impact consumers and their colour preferences in the coming years. By creating the right story with the right colours and at the right time, AkzoNobel takes the lead in colour authority. The proud premise of their colour-trend research is ColourFutures, which encapsulates the yearly content of their astute observations. It is applied as the basis for the colour design, colour competence and colour communication for all AkzoNobel paint brands around the world. What about the people powering the AkzoNobel Aesthetic Center? For the record, the team comprises six colour and design experts who work for over 80 markets around the world. Besides visualising the colour palettes and concepts, they also implement the colours into brilliant room-set and exterior photography. Heleen van Gent, who heads the AkzoNobel Aesthetic Center, muses: “My love for colour stems from my early childhood. I used to stand behind my father’s designboard and played around with the designer felts he used as a town planner and architect.”

“Together with my team I design colour tools, concepts and palettes that make that choice easier. I take great pleasure each year in overseeing the creation and art-directing AkzoNobel ColourFutures!” Heleen van Gent, Head of AkzoNobel Aesthetic Center

The previous interior stylist also adds: “I worked in the magazine industry for almost 20 years, and started as an interior stylist. Becoming a design editor later on made me aware of the importance of helping the consumer to make choices. Offering them a helping hand, pre-selecting colours, helping them to make choices they were not going to regret. And that is what I am still doing. After joining the AkzoNobel Aesthetic Center, I brought with me a passion for helping people to find the right colour and even more important, the right color combinations.“ With her dedicated team of designers supporting her vision, these trend research design experts work on an all-encompassing global theme, four global trends, 45 trend colours and one colour of the year which is recognised regionally. And the AzkoNobel Aesthetic Center team has spoken: Turn to the next page to find out which colour has been conferred the Colour of the Year 2017.

Denim Drift

8 7 BG 27 /07 7

As Monarch Gold — last year’s Colour of The Year — ends its glorious streak, it turns over its torch to a brand new colour of the year, Denim Drift. While Monarch Gold revisited the revelry of the past, Denim Drift is a lot more subdued. So how did this understated colour stand out from all the other eye-catching contenders to land the Colour of The Year 2017 title? We let its versatility do all the talking. A hue which paints the skies and the seas, blue exudes inner confidence and seeks peace and tranquillity. It is a colour everyone can relate to and with its tonal greyblue tint, Denim Drift can work a different characteristic based on its application. It can perfectly encapsulate the mood of the moment and can be easily integrated into lifestyles and home styles. With that, it is a blue that we expect to see everywhere and therefore is a perfect representative for Dulux’s new perspective in 2017. A picture of calm, Denim Drift advocates connection, simplification, recognition, a relaxed pace of life and sharing. It is a simple, restful colour we can all understand and relate to. Heleen van Gent, Head of the AkzoNobel Aesthetic Center, adds: “Denim Drift is a wonderfully diverse foundation for the 2017 colour palette, which tells the story of our ‘life in a new light’ trend through its vast range of tones and colours. With blue set to dominate the interior trend agenda for 2017, Denim Drift does a fantastic job by representing the times we live in, designers love it and so do we.” “Denim drift and its complementary colour palette will set off your walls in a beautiful way. There is a colour combination for everyone’s taste and preference within the palette, with denim blue as our favourite.”

INSPIRED BY THE WORLD AROUND YOU Steal bold and beautiful colour ideas from the things you see around you every day Once you start thinking about it, you’ll find colour inspiration everywhere you look.

The natural world Whether it’s a forest where you like to go for walks, your local park or even a plant on your windowsill, nature has lots of inspiration to offer. Inject energy into a space with tropical greens broken up with bright splashes of accent colour.

An urban cityscape Cities are jam-packed with colour ideas. Create an edgy, urban scheme with pops of neon alongside an elegant grey, or take inspiration from the city skyline at sunset for a warm, laidback vibe.

A beach holiday Bring that holiday feeling home with you by painting your walls in cheerful and invigorating beach-inspired colours. Sandy yellows and ocean blues look great together and evoke the invigorating atmosphere of the seaside.

A treasured object This could be a painting by your favourite artist, a colourful ornament or a souvenir you brought back from your last holiday. Use it as a starting point and it’s hard to go wrong.

Your wardrobe Your little red dress or favourite blue shirt could be the key to your decorating scheme as well as your outfit.

“Start by looking at what inspires you. It may be images from a magazine, architecture, or perhaps a favourite piece of art.” Chantal Assinck Global colour expert

“Your house and your interior are part of your identity, so it’s important to understand how different colours work in your home.” Chantal Assinck Global colour expert The way a room faces, the time of day and whether the light is natural or artificial will affect how colour looks on your wall.

Painting with light

1

3

We explain how to choose the right paint for the right light It’s amazing how the same colour can look completely different depending on the light that’s shining on it. The way a room faces, the time of day and whether the light is natural or artificial all play a huge part in how a colour will look on your wall.

Rooms that get morning sun These rooms see the most variations in light during the day. At dawn the light has a slight pinkish tinge to it, which quickly turns blue as the morning progresses. Later on, the room may feel quite shady. To make the most of your room at all times of day, paint the walls in a pale blue or green.

Rooms that get all-day sun Try using pale tones that will bounce light back into the room, creating a bright, airy feel. Golden hues will add to the sun-kissed effect, while light blues will create calm.

Rooms that get the late afternoon sun

Rooms lit by artificial light 1. Yellow light bulbs and candlelight bring out the best in warm hues like reds and oranges. That’s why red is such a popular choice for rooms that tend to be used in the evening. 2. White light bulbs give off a light that’s closer to daylight, making your colour choices more versatile than with other types of bulb – you can go as pale or bright as you like. 3. LED lights tend to give off a bluish glow, which you can embrace with cool pastels for a contemporary look.

These rooms will generally be cooler in the mornings then warm up later in the day, so go for sunny yellows to create a bright, welcoming morning space, or cooler shades for a soothing place to relax later on. 11

8 Instagramworthy looks to love No filter needed! These picture-perfect paint ideas will garner likes aplenty for your living space.

#1 PASTELS ON PALLETS Great for an industrial-style setting, paint pastel tones over pallet wood shelving. The smooth, creamy tones tone down the coarse, distressedlooking textures and you get a totally unique-looking storage fixture. Take a pic, post it and the hits will come rolling in!

12

#2 STYLISH SHELVING Show off a functional feature like shelves with a coloured backing. Paint it in a contrasting tone and watch it bloom from utilitarian to super stylish with this colour highlight.

#3 Number Play Here’s a cool and totally unexpected way to stand out from the rest of your neighbours: paint your unit numbers on the wall! For a grand entrance, mark your front entrance with the numbers only exclusive to your home and follow up with a complementary colour scheme. 13

#4 CHIC CORNER Dress up a cosy corner with a bold paint colour. This idyllic shade of blue comprises all the winning qualities; it’s inviting, engaging and has a time-proof essence that will always keep the look fresh and current. Best of all, it’ll make any furniture or decorative ornament pop.

#5 LAYERED LOOK Go for more than one painted wall treatment by mixing things up with a bold painted hue and stripes. It’s best not to be too adventurous with this double style treatment so apply colours from the same group. A complementary base colour will ground the look and the stripes will set off a striking effect.

14

#7 LINES OF SOPHISTICATION Stripes are a style staple and for this feature area, it is illustrated beautifully with a soothing medley of greyish-blue and white hues. Go for good proportion lines which do not overwhelm, instead of thinner pinstripes which might make the room look busy. With such a stunning backdrop, you can create gorgeous vignettes out of your favourite display accents which also make for a winning picture.

#6 GO DOTTY Cute painted dots like these will immediately brighten up a bare wall. Use a mix of bright and neutral tones but with a warm undertone to set a cohesive pattern. For the dots, you can use dinner plates as a no-cost stencil.

#8 GRID GOODNESS Turn your Instagram game from ho-hum to bombastic with a strong, classic-looking backdrop. This painted monochromatic chequered feature wall and its unexpected dots fulfil a fun and fresh Scandinavian style aesthetic where simplicity is key and definitely enduring.

15

If home to you is a stress-free zone, choosing colours that emote tranquility and quiet contemplation will transport you to your safe and happy place. NEUTRAL PLAYGROUND Don’t be surprised but a warm neutral tone can also be extended to a preschooler’s room. It works well when you balance it with a white ceiling and when you use a visual focus such as a black chalkboard to hold the look together. Boring? We think not by the looks of this inviting and fun-looking bedroom.

GREY OASIS As far as grey goes, it is versatile and timeless. By choosing a mid-tone shade of grey that takes well to daylight, it emotes an oasis of calm with zero visual distractions— a perfect place for chilling out or catnaps.

OLIVE GROVE Green is mostly associated with nature and for this deep tint of green, it also carves out a charming cosy corner. The saturated tone makes the setting look almost regal with a quiet sense of sophistication.

Timeless Appeal

Separating timely from timeless is this selection of homes boasting an interior look that will stay fresh even decades later.

Fads come and go, but true style never fades. This is the precedent for the homes you’ll find in this section. The selection of timeless-looking spaces by our Dulux Preferred Designers (DPD) is created to stand the test of time. From a singleton’s pad to a family home, these homes with an effervescent appeal will take its occupants through various stages of their lives and endure the wrath of time.

Pioneering a look that will always remain current is not an easy task to navigate. Go too minimalistic and things get bland and clinical, and if you inject too many colourful, eclectic details, the style loses its time-proof quality soon enough in the eyes of the fickle. An intricate balance in design elements and colours will weed out the timely styles from the timeless and these homes have proven they have staying power.

From this selection, we see a mix of classicism and modernism. There are also unexpected touches such as style influences from trends-of-the-moment to temper the sleek strokes of a neutral colour palette. Here lies the anatomy of a well-designed space which will never bore or feel dated.

Inviting Influences

A cosy and contemporary bachelor’s pad is defined by cool neutrals leaning towards a masculine influence.

DULUX WHITE ON WHITE 30GY 88/014

OVERALL VIEW While this apartment is on the petite side, the application of a light colour scheme turns a tight situation around. Touches of off-white paint hues paired with light grey tones amplify the visual appearance of the connected communal areas emitting a masculine style. LIVING The square footage of this living area is elongated visually by painting the high ceiling with a crisp shade of white. This space-enhancing colour draws natural light in and creates more breathing room for the otherwise cramped-looking area. BEDROOM (opposite page) To conceive a clean-lined but calming sleeping space, the walls are painted white and it complements the other warm, woody accents. With that, the room looks bigger and brighter as well. MINI STOREROOM (opposite page) The homeowner was open to many of the design ideas that Zidane Design Associates proposed and one of them was creating an overhead storage area in the bedroom. This was readily accepted by the homeowner as his apartment did not have a proper storeroom to stash away all his belongings.

LIVING Privy to a gorgeous unblocked view, this definitely constitutes as a strong feature of this high-floor unit. To capitalise on this asset, the designers ‘framed’ the view up with a design border by painting the walls and ceiling black. It also creates a contemporary focal point against the established warm colour scheme. MASTER BEDROOM A picture of tranquility, the master bedroom has been outfitted by a white and earthy colour palette. The pristine white walls are beautifully set off by the warm woodgrain textures and it makes the room look and feel a lot more inviting. COMMON BATHROOM (opposite page) Besides swathing the bathroom walls with a sleek brick-inspired design, the treatment is continued onto the ceiling as well. The designers were innovative enough to use paint to emulate the same brick patterns. COMMON BEDROOM (opposite page) For the son’s bedroom, the designer conceptualised a sleek timeless style for the young adult. They chose a contemporary shade of grey with a warm touch and it has been applied to walls behind the headboard and study area.

Modern Family

Using clean neutrals as the base colour, the rest of this apartment is finished in fluid design details and clever space configuration.

DULUX N.B.C White 30GY 76/017

LIVING To fulfil the homeowners’ design brief for a clean and simple style, the designers combined two primary tones—white and grey—for a chic and contemporary look. Too much white can make the space look cold so a touch of sea green on one wall downplays the starkness. KITCHEN & DINING Wedged between the kitchen and the dining zone is a bar counter. This open plan concept makes for a stylish monochromatic setting where the homeowners can dine, cook and entertain all at the same area. MASTER BEDROOM (opposite page) Following the overall colour scheme of white and grey hues, the bedroom evokes a cool sense of sophistication. The dark grey walls make an excellent canvas for showcasing black-and-white wall art, as the pieces will definitely pop out in prominence. COMMON BEDROOM (opposite page) Showcasing an interesting configuration, the master bedroom and the other bedroom are connected via a sliding door. This makes it easy for the homeowners to check on their six-year-old daughter. The little girl’s bedroom sports a dark painted wall to serve as a doodle board for the young occupant to unleash her creative side.

COMMUNAL ZONES Accented with an understated tint of grey, the petite dining space shows off an uncluttered visage. As to not overwhelm or add visual bulk to the space, the designers chose sliding doors to close off the kitchen area. LIVING With free reign given to the designers to work out the design scheme, they studied the occupants’ lifestyles and design preferences to put together a look unique only to this HDB flat unit. That explains a mishmash of varying design details; from the brick wall to the cool neutral colour choices. STUDY (opposite page) The space is wellmaximised with full-height cabinetry scaling both sides of the walls. A compelling visual plane is created by a white composition of paint colours and a floating study desk mounted above the bay window seat. LIVING & DINING Space is limited in this communal area so the designers turned to a less disruptive colour and design scheme. A timeless modern contemporary style sweeps across the room with an understated flair and with a white-coloured base, accent tones like a darker neutral add the right measure of visual contrast. MASTER BEDROOM Floor area is tight in this bedroom but luckily, it has a balcony which lets lots of light into the space. To capitalise on that, the designers worked in light-amplifying touches like neutral-coloured walls and streamlined-looking fixtures. DINING (opposite page) An off-white tone with a warm hint defines this dining zone. With it set in an open plan layout, the colour scheme of the dining area has to match the living area’s subdued colour scheme. It is necessary to set off a harmonising effect. FRONT ENTRANCE (opposite page) An off-white wall and built-in fixtures flank the walkway into the main communal area which showcases a corner shelf. These two elements are well paired together as the modern shapes of the fixtures cast an engaging silhouette onto the otherwise flat-looking wall.

This rugged design is not an easy look to work with but the final outcome makes a stylish modern statement; with the other whitewashed walls balancing the strong aesthetics. MASTER BEDROOM To make an outstanding statement in the master bedroom, a play on different neutral colours renders a striking contrast. The cool undertones of grey bestow an ethereal and lightweight feel to enlarge the room visually. COSY CORNER (opposite page) The open-concept communal area also hosts a statement corner. LIVING Unlike tighter homes, the apartment itself has the luxury of space and a good expanse of daylight. To capitalise on that, the designers applied a clean white colour scheme and a minimalistic mix of furnishings. COMMUNAL ZONES Besides being grounded by a white composition, the rest of the communal areas host other space-enhancing measures such as clear mirror strips and a semi open-concept layout for the kitchen. All these design details advocate the illusion of a larger living space. STUDY (opposite page) Pristine white is also the choice colour for the walls in the study. It not only resonates with the ongoing modern theme, it promotes concentration and less visual distractions in this workspace. MASTER BEDROOM (opposite page) While most of the home is shrouded in white painted walls, the bedroom is swathed in a relaxing shade of grey. This subdued tone is a good fit to pull off a modern yet serene look and it helps take away the attention from the slanted orientation of the room.

DINING Asymmetrical forms of bold painted lines rock the Scandinavian style in this open plan dining space. A wooden disc hangs atop the painted wall and it isn’t just part of the aesthetics, it is actually an additional tabletop to be placed over the dining table to extend it. COMMON BEDROOM The son’s bedroom features the same white and grey painted backdrop but it bears a different interpretation. The designers wanted to create an outdoorsy feel in here and they made the painted strokes echo the gradients of a mountain. LIVING (opposite page) The homeowners prefer pink and grey tones, and that is reflected on the engaging painted backdrop that scales the wall of the shared living and dining zones. There is precision in its placement as there is a perfect symmetrical view of the painted wall which greets the corridor leading to the rooms. MASTER BEDROOM (opposite page) The design consistency is prominent in the bedroom as well, as the married couple has a similar Scandiinspired feature wall for their headboard. All in all, this painted backdrop is versatile enough to be translated into all areas of this apartment.

The light and invigorating tone of blue on the walls makes the entire space look more appealing and spacious. MASTER BEDROOM A white wall proves to be the best canvas for the decorative ornaments and artwork to take the limelight. With that, the homeowners can add more personal items or decorative elements without worrying about visual clutter. COMMUNAL AREA (opposite page) Another seating area for the home is helmed by a light grey wall. With the ceiling painted in the same shade, this cosy chill-out area displays a bigger visual expanse of space. The designers were greatly inspired by the clean-cut Japanese minimalist style and therefore, they utilised colours on the lighter side. STUDY Tucked in the corner of the master bedroom is a compact study and entertainment area. This multipurpose space is marked by cool grey walls which seem to push the boundaries of space further. DINING (opposite page) Awash by clean neutral tones, the colour palette renders a tranquil touch to this dining area. LIVING With the white painted walls drawing out a larger sense of space in the living area, the designers mixed things up with a cosy and soothing touch of light woodgrain accents. Together, these complementary components put together a welcoming and lowmaintenance living space for the married couple living here. DINING & KITCHEN Besides applying the established colour palette of white and warm woodgrain accents, the designers also utilised space-enhancing measures like a full-length mirror and see-through glass furnishings. All these additions visually expand the look of the open-concept space. MASTER BEDROOM (opposite page) A warm colour scheme takes over the sleeping quarters. Creating a custombuilt bedframe with matching cabinetry adds to the cosy aesthetics and it is further accentuated with an earthy-toned feature wall. KITCHEN (opposite page) To complement the woody textures in the cookspace, the designers applied white tones to hold the modern resort look together. It enhances the unblocked stream of air and light in the open-concept space as well.

Glory of Nature

Instead of chasing interior trends, this apartment creates its own style identity with an urban tropical influence.

DULUX WHITE ON WHITE 30GY 88/014

LIVING To satisfy the lifestyle preferences of this multigenerational family, an earthy colour scheme was adopted. It fills the living space with a warm but stylish appeal which is conducive for familial bonding. DINING A thick black border which spans across the ceiling renders a contemporary and timeless touch to temper the heavy woodgrain accents. This clean line of separation is also functional; it hides away unsightly wiring like air-conditioner trunking. COMMUNAL ZONES (opposite page) The best complement to the soothing colour palette is the artful arrangement of decor ornaments. The designers played with texture and the engaging forms of the display pieces and furnishings to draw out a strong visual impact. White Brilliance

The perfect backdrop to complement wood, the refreshing presence of white enhances the modern contemporary style of this spacious family home.

DULUX WHITE ON WHITE 30GY 88/014

COMMUNAL ZONES This four-bedder condominium unit sports a unique configuration; it has a long balcony with a display showcase wedged between it. This was necessary because it hosts sewage piping and the designers wanted to conceal it with something functional and aesthetically pleasing. With this unsightly element discreetly hidden, the designers clad the space with a white composition accented by warm woodgrain textures. KITCHEN + DINING Featuring both dry and wet kitchens, this area is where the family can host stylish gatherings. Boosting the well-equipped kitchen are clean-lined aesthetics and pristine white tones which create a bright and spacious environment. MASTER BEDROOM (opposite page) Following the light colour combo in the communal zones, the master bedroom is swathed in a crisp tone of white that doesn’t feel cold or too modern. What it does is actually flatter the warm woodgrain accents, as it makes for a setting where modern and tranquillity meets. COMMON BEDROOM (opposite page) To combat the odd-shaped corner that this bedroom is stuck with, the designers used a visual distraction which comprises built-in cabinetry to maximise the storage space. The rest of the room is outfitted with white and woody touches for a uniformed style take.

Work of Art

Sparking off the overall modern look and warm colour scheme for this condominium unit is the homeowner’s strong appreciation for art.

DULUX quiet hideaway 81YY 81/016

COMMUNAL ZONES It all started from the homeowner’s coveted art collection. The designers noted the fluid strokes within each of the art pieces and translated it into the colour selection for this living space. They decided warm hues would make the perfect composition to let the paintings, the true highlights of the space, shine. LIVING A cool interplay of white and woody tones offers a visual disparity for the living and dining zones. With the established tones alternating between the two areas, it sets off a sense of demarcation while keeping to a consistent look and feel. COMMON BEDROOM (opposite page) A shade of grey emoting masculinity imbues the son’s bedroom. It brings along a dash of visual interest and turns the otherwise flat-looking space into a chic hideaway for the teenage occupant. MASTER BEDROOM (opposite page) Simplicity is key to introducing an atmosphere of lightness and ease into this bedroom. The choice of contemporary shades like the warm grey painted wall indicates a restrained approach to colour, and it shows how less is truly more for a relaxed setting.

COMMUNAL ZONES A white composition for the living and dining zones creates an opportunity for the designers to introduce thick black outlines for the space without overwhelming the overall look. This design treatment, which appears on the window and door frames, ushers in a characterful industrial style which suits the homeowners’ tastes just fine. LIVING To factor in the Scandi style, a clean white palette decks all the walls. It accentuates the flow of air and light; a look synonymous with Nordic-inspired interiors. It also keeps the groovy colours and rustic textures of the living room set in check to create a well-curated look. STUDY (opposite page) One of the rooms was turned into a semi-enclosed study. The designers used an off-white paint hue to draw out a clean-cut but relaxed mood in this space that is cordoned by glass windows. MASTER BEDROOM (opposite page) An abundant stream of daylight floods the master bedroom with an airy deposition. The natural light also brightens up the choice of warm neutral colours on the wall and makes the room look more visually appealing.

Modern Symphony

To make the clean-cut white colour scheme even brighter and more appealing in this spacious home, shiny metallic accents add a touch of luxe.

DULUX CRYSTAL 50BG 83/009

LIVING Noting the homeowners’ preference for a restrained colour scheme, the designers worked with two colours primarily: white and gold. These two tones create an outstanding contrast for this living area and serve as the perfect prelude before entering the darker confines of the master bedroom. DINING The same colour scheme of white and gold is extended to the dining area as well. The neutrality of white serves as a clean-looking canvas to host display ornaments and the gold accents with flair. HEADBOARD (opposite page) To draw out the natural rustic textures of the tweed headboard, the designers selected a light and cool shade of grey for the wall. It bestows a soothing touch as well and is the perfect modern backdrop to helm the custom-made headboard. Furnishings and decorative accents were later added into the picture to add colour and texture. MASTER BEDROOM A saturated shade of grey adorns the feature wall of the sleeping area and it was chosen to complement the light woodgrains of the bedframe. This warm shade of grey adds incredible drama into a space with its moody undertone. COMMON BEDROOM (opposite page) While waiting for the arrival of their first child, the homeowners and designers opted for gender-neutral yellow for this children’s room. Soft yellow painted stripes are then matched with basic white tones. LIVING (opposite page) With the sofa’ orientation facing the expansive balcony view, soaking up the awesome scenery is mandatory. Statement Makers

Hitting the high notes of interior design are these homes that make a vivid impression.

Behind every personality-filled home is a designer who thinks out of the box. This design maestro understands how to orchestrate impactful styles by reshuffling the rule book. They are fearless in venturing the road less travelled by choosing bolder colours and brighter style accents. The Dulux Preferred Designers (DPD) featured in this section make mixing and matching design elements of contrasting natures so effortless that every home is truly one of a kind.

Broadcasting confidence through your home takes guts and yet, it has to adhere to the fundamentals of good design. The thumb of the rule is to find common ground to make everything gel as one. Since a whole room full of strong statement pieces would be overkill, one way to go about it is to determine a defining style feature and downplay the other elements so that the highlight pops. As shown in these DPD homes, the designers are instinctive about finding the right balance. They are experts in playing with light against dark, honed against glossy and rustic against elegance. They can find room for a range of favourite looks and curate a personal style like a pro.

Being unpredictable is the name of the game and as shown by these characterful homes, you’re in for a surprise. Personalising your own space has never felt and looked so effortless.

LIVING To preserve some of its old walkup charm, the designers introduced industrial and rustic textures into the picture such as an exposed steel beam. Most of the walls are painted white to let these striking details take centrestage. KITCHEN A large kitchen island unit allowed the homeowners to indulge in their baking hobby. At their disposal are also plenty of storage compartments such as the pantry-style cabinetry to store all their kitchen tools. COMMON BEDROOM (opposite page) Raising the spatial awareness of the space is the use of pivoting doors that alters the entire design landscape. Eclectic Pairing

To fuse the homeowners’ individualistic style tastes as one collaborative look, the designers took cues from Nordic and weathered industrial influences.

DULUX THE DARK SIDE 30YY 05/044

COMMUNAL ZONES Noting the male homeowner’s preference for the industrial style, the designers introduced a dark-coloured painted wall and teamed it up with a brick wall feature. The black wall serves as neutral ground for the other stronger textures and quirky furnishings to make a bigger impact. LIVING Novelty knick-knacks offer an eclectic favour and are grounded by a neutral colour background. The clean-cut colour is a practical choice as it enhances the flow of natural lighting coming in from the veranda. COMMON BEDROOM (opposite page) The other room of this two-bedder ground floor apartment is marked by a contemporary blue hue with a warm undertone. It fills the space with a calming vibe and can be used as a guest bedroom. MASTER BEDROOM (opposite page) While the male homeowner likes the rugged industrial style, his partner prefers a more soothing Tiffany blue hue. Her style preference is translated onto the bedroom’s main wall and it guides the rest of Scandinavian design elements along.

COMMUNAL ZONES Plenty of research was done before the renovation commenced as the designers wanted to get a better grasp of how a pet-friendly space functioned. They took inspiration from Japanese cat cafes and conceptualised a pastel purple wall complete with aerial ramps for the pet cats to roam around. PLAYGROUND Another room has been devoted to the fur kids and in this space, a friendly shade of turquoise blue pops out amidst the pet facilities. This serves as a focal point and it is framed by a white painted border for a stronger contrast. UPCLOSE (opposite page) The homeowners’ love for their pets is well-documented on the walls. By adding quirky cat stickers to pair with the wall-mounted steps, it makes the pet-themed home even more vibrant. FRONT ENTRANCE (opposite page) The soft touch of purple is prominent right from the entrance. It not establishes the key colour theme; it also serves as a fitting backdrop for all the white custom-built fixtures.

COMMUNAL ZONES The homeowners, a mother and her young adult son, wanted a bigger communal area to cook and entertain in so the living area was relocated to one of the bedrooms. That gave the designers more room to play with the space and the design details. They dressed things up with a high-impact look which comprises of Dulux Ambiance™ Paint applied onto the wall behind the dining set. COMMON BEDROOM For this aspiring chef’s bedroom, it’s all about keeping things modern and stylish. A dark grey colour scheme swathes the walls and built-in fixtures, and this ushers in a modern masculine touch. ENTERTAINMENT ROOM (opposite page) With the living area now reconfigured as an entertainment room, the homeowners have a sleek and cosy space to entertain guests privately. One of the design highlights is the ceiling feature; it features two layers of grey tones which complements the futuristic-looking dropped ceiling form. MASTER BEDROOM (opposite page) Requested by the lady owner of the home, she wanted to escape into a different world—a calming retreat—in the comfort of her own bedroom. That was achieved with visuals depicting nature which is balanced by a soft pink hue.

A pleasing palette of contemporary tones is matched immaculately to put together a polished and cosy family home.

DULUX winter bird 30YY 78/018

LIVING Warm neutrals and a streamlined order of aesthetics define this modern contemporary living zone. To tone down the sterile effect of the neat lines and colours, textured finishes break the clean-cut monotony. DINING Welcoming guests into its confines with a neutral colour theme, the dining space is all set for some stylish entertaining. The designers have managed to emphasise the lofty height of the ceiling with colours and textures and this brings a sense of grandeur to the dining area. MASTER BEDROOM (opposite page) A warm colour scheme bestows a boutique hotel appeal to this shared master bedroom. The look is accentuated by plush touches and luxurious soft furnishings. COMMON BEDROOM (opposite page) While the room is mostly swathed with a metallic grey tone, the hint of white paint on the ceiling offers a visual breather. This makes the sleekness of the modern contemporary style stand out even more.

Open Visage

To draw out a sleek Scandinavian style befitting this apartment’s expansive balcony view, a pared-back palette of colours and textures was utilised.

DULUX drifting snow 10BB 83/014

COMMUNAL ZONES As to not disrupt the picture of calm streaming in from the elongated balcony, the designers worked with a simple industrialinspired palette. A crisp touch of white is balanced by distressed textures and light woodgrain accents to put the focus more on the panoramic view. MASTER BEDROOM Unlike the communal areas, the designers toned down on the starkness in the bedroom with warm, neutral tones. A blend of white and light earthy colours imbues the room with a soothing presence and creates a cosy setting to recharge in. LIVING (opposite page) A sense of cohesiveness is created by extending the white paint tone towards the ceiling. It elevates the visual appearance of height to make the ceiling and the size of the home a lot more spacious. OVERALL VIEW (opposite page) To cater to this family with four kids, it was essential that the style of this home is practical, low-maintenance and yet seamless enough to take all the clutter that comes with a big household. A modern Scandinavian look was decided and along with the open-concept layout, the final results dictate a style that is sleek, airy and inviting.

Luxe Living

Live it up with styles that celebrate opulence and the finer things in life.

Many common folks perceive luxury styles as unattainable, especially in the context of a studio apartment or tiny HDB dwelling. While it is true that the style of immaculately-staged interiors appears mostly in larger living spaces, it can work equally well in petite spaces. The glamorous applications of Victorian, modern classic or elegant hotel styles will make any interior shine.

These tasteful makeovers all share these design signatures: extravagant detailing, luxurious materials such as marble, travertine and leather add a gilded finishing touch. For the colour palettes, we are seeing deep rich jewel tones, metallic shades or warm neutrals that serve as the great equaliser in order to let the grand design elements hog the spotlight.

In these luxurious-looking homes helmed by the Dulux Preferred Designers, opulent aesthetics are just part of the surface. They haven’t neglected the basis of good design, where liveability is equally important. With that, they have put together living spaces that fulfil both the discerning tastes and lifestyles of its occupants. In other words, you’ll come home to indulgence which is still inviting and relatable on a personal level.

STREAMLINED ELEGANCE

An interesting interplay of paint colours for the ceiling creates a truly unique living space for this contemporary family home.

DULUX BARRISTER WHITE 30YY 80/088

OVERALL VIEW Cutting a fine figure across the ceiling is a geometric scale of design lines. It is the first thing that greets guests who arrive at the living hall. DINING A warm neutral colour scheme fills the open-concept communal zones with a contemporary yet cosy aesthetic. This was specified by the homeowners who wanted an inviting and timeless family home. STAIRWAY (opposite page) Natural light floods this narrow layout but the dominant use of a white palette ensures that the look and feel is never constrictive. In fact, the white backdrop becomes a beautiful canvas for the different style forms to cast alluring shadows upon. CHILDREN’S BEDROOM (opposite page) A departure from the soothing medley of hues applied in the communal areas, this room’s colour scheme is decidedly more vibrant. The designers proposed a uplifting colour such as this pastel green to better suit the age and personal preferences of the room’s young occupant.

COMMUNAL ZONES An interplay on dark and white tones transforms a hum-drum space into an effortlessly chic and cosy hub for family hangouts. The dark grey painted wall, which serves as the main focal point of the living room, helps guide the rest of the modern chic design language along. OVERALL VIEW Breaking the starkness of the clean white composition are dusky-coloured and woodgrain design elements. Without these moody style touches, the space will probably look flat and feel cold and clinical. LIVING & DINING (opposite page) The streamlined placement of the furnishings does make an impact to the space. Such symmetry draws out a sense of sophistication and puts together a perfect picture. MASTER BEDROOM (opposite page) Resembling a chic five-star hotel suite, the bedroom shines with understated flair. Neutral-coloured walls in this bedroom for instance, amplify the flow of light and air and carve out a restful aura. OVERALL VIEW (opposite page) Basic tones such as tancoloured walls draw in a sense of light and sophistication to this multi-storey home. COMMUNAL ZONES Accented by luxurious materials and a soft and subdued colour palette, this open-plan communal area shines with a modern luxe flavour. In fact, these lustrous surfaces and serene hues draw out a larger expanse of space from the long and narrow layout. MASTER BEDROOM Just like any new apartment, the bedrooms are on the petite side. To counter these spacechallenged issues, the designers expanded the master bedroom by extending part of the wardrobe into the next bedroom. This affords them with the luxury of space to factor in more walking room and a larger wardrobe. SON’S ROOM (opposite page) The designers considered the primary school-aged occupant’s preferences and of course, favourite cartoon character for the design of his room. A timeless white and dark neutral colour scheme accented by a soft yellow feature wall works best, as it can take the child through his growing years and still appeal to his senses. DAUGHTER’S ROOM (opposite page) It’s not complicated to make out what the occupant of this room likes; the pre-schooler is into princesses so the designers created a sweet and girly haven. By applying a soft touch of pink onto the walls, the room emits a feminine and sophisticated style.

LIVING + DINING For this three-storey landed home, the designers went all out to create a comfortable and spacious setting for the family to live lavishly. They utilised a pretty tame colour palette for paint, with basic colours like white and grey to spark off a subtle yet refined communal area. FAMILY AREA The homeowners are all about spending quality family time, so the second level features a family area. It is also designed with the family’s comfort level in mind— with soothing, creamy colours taking centrestage to extend a warm invite. MASTER BEDROOM (opposite page) Subdued neutrals like grey paint colours swathe the bedroom with a contemporary and timeless style. The spacious bedroom is integrated with its own walk-in wardrobe so its occupants can enjoy the amenities all within the same confines. COMMON BEDROOM (opposite page) Moving towards a fresher and more fun style take, the style of this common bedroom is geared towards a younger occupant. Grey is the base colour here and as exemplified here, it can be smoothly fused with different colours and textures without overwhelming the overall look.
