Liang May

Outfitted with quartz countertops, marbled tile flooring, gold-accented fittings, laminated cabinetry and a highly distinctive hexagonalshaped backsplash, this stylish kitchen was designed with both aesthetics and functionality in mind. Concurrently, the utilitarian zone was also given a new lease on life through the tearing down of preexisting perimeter walls, which allows more natural light to permeate into the space while encouraging free-flow communication between users in the kitchen and the outer communal zones. CHEF’S ESSENTIALS

Get your culinary adventures started off on the right foot by fitting your cooking zone with all the right tools TEXT  Shimin Chu

aving the right kitchen set-up is an important first step in cooking. Creating a functional utilitarian zone begins with choosing the ideal hob and hood. Not only should these fixtures complement one another, they should also be a good fit to your lifestyle and cooking preferences. Here’s a quick guide on how to choose the right kitchen appliance for you and your household.

Cooker hood

EFFICIENCY As a hood is designed to keep your kitchen smelling fresh by filtering out unpleasant smoke and grease, a hood’s operational efficiency is measured by its suction capability. A hood with good suction efficiency should possess an air extraction rate above 600m³/hr. Canopy hoods generally demonstrate a more powerful suction efficiency as compared to slide-out hoods.

Hoods remove the grease and cooking fumes from the air so that your kitchen is less oily and smoky after a cooking session. With options ranging from chimney to telescopic to downdraft hoods, here are some factors to consider before selecting your desired cooker hood.

TIME TO REFLECT Fill your home with light with the help of reflective surfaces IMAGE COURTESY OF squarefoot interior design

There’s nothing like a light-filled space to feel refreshed and renewed. But not all of us have the luxury of having expansive windows at home to help facilitate the flow of natural light. Not to worry though, for the use of large mirrors is just as effective in helping bounce off light throughout your interiors.
