ART ON THE HARBOR ISLANDS ERNESTO PUJOL TERI RUEB ANNA SCHULEIT OFFICE DA JUNE 23 – OCTOBER 8, 2007
NEW PROJECTS RESPOND TO THE RICH TERRAIN OF THE BOSTON HARBOR ISLANDS NATIONAL PARK AREA Art on the Harbor Islands is a multi-sensory discovery of the Boston Harbor Islands’ remarkable resources—water and sky, sand and city, historic sites and new trails, all just a ferry ride from the heart of Boston. This national park area, home to beaches, marinas, walking trails, picnic sites, and wildlife, provides inspiration for four new contemporary art projects. Leading artists and architects who examine our relationship to the spaces around us—whether abandoned buildings, progressive design, or the natural world—present work that goes below the surface and into the past, exploring the built environment, the natural landscape, and our connection to it all.

ERNESTO PUJOL
The Water Cycle Spectacle, Georges, Lovells, Little Brewster Islands, and Boston HarborWalk Join Ernesto Pujol as he makes a series of symbolic journeys evoking the sea’s power and the essential importance of water. Portraying the Water Carrier, a silent, contemplative character, Pujol will begin and end these walks on the ICA’s Putnam Investments Plaza. Traveling to several of the Boston Harbor Islands and along the HarborWalk, the Water Carrier will fill hand-blown glass vessels with water from each destination and return them to the ICA, where they become part of a sculptural work. The public is invited to join all or part of these walks. Call 617-478-3160 for schedule updates and information about cancellations due to inclement weather. SPECTACLE ISLAND
TERI RUEB
Core Sample Spectacle Island and the ICA Spectacle has been home to casinos and hotels, a horse rendering plant, city dumping, and to families who lived and worked on the island. Now active parkland, Spectacle’s two prominent man-made drumlins were shaped with excavated material from Boston’s “Big Dig” and planted with 28,000 trees, shrubs, and grasses. Teri Rueb’s Core Sample is an interactive sound walk inspired by Spectacle’s complex history and recent reclamation. Borrow headphones from the island’s Visitor Center and then roam the island to experience a landscape of sounds activated by GPS (please see map). Discover unique combinations of natural and processed sounds – including voices of the island’s former residents – that correspond to Spectacle’s many subterranean layers, as well as its present soundscape. Core Sample includes an interactive sound sculpture in the ICA’s Founders Gallery— opening onto a panoramic view of Boston Harbor— that offers another way to experience this audio piece.

ANNA SCHULEIT Waterside Lovells Island
With Waterside, Schuleit takes us inside her artistic process. Having spent extensive time on Lovells Island—she lived in a yurt there last summer—Schuleit is fascinated by its peculiar mix of crumbling military ruins and rugged, natural beauty. Housed in a yurt similar to Schuleit’s temporary island home, Waterside is a display of models, drawings, and artist’s books that imagines two ambitious site-specific projects. Intertidal would place 10-foot-high, mirrored surfaces in the island’s intertidal zones, reflecting sea, sky, bathers, and the decaying artillery structures, symbolically reversing their purpose.
Please note that Waterside closes on Labor Day, Monday, September 3.

Sightlines, a series of four large-scale drawings of island bathers etched on a rare grade of glass, would be situated on Fort Standish’s gun emplacements, reflecting and refracting the changing light.
OFFICE DA Voromuro Georges Island
Monica Ponce de Leon and Nader Tehrani of the progressive architectural team Office dA explore the rich interplay between Georges Island’s natural topography and the extensive stone masonry of Fort Warren, active during the American Civil War.

Voromuro is an intricate structure designed for the interior of the fort’s Powder Magazine, constructed with hundreds of interlocking translucent boulders.
