fangirl. It feels like we have to work twice as hard as the guys to prove we’re genuinely into geek. We’d like to be able to enjoy our fandoms without our femininity being scrutinized, geek out without being accused of being interested in something, just for the pretty faces. We all know their sexy is just a bonus. Not to mention most women’s magazines are filled with sexist and stereotypical information that end up instilling anxiety. This is where Squee comes in – a magazine and online community where you can be as unapologetically fangirly as you want. We’re going to discuss movies, comics, games, TV, the internet and everything in between. While this mini issue is not representative of all that we’ll offer or the exact end product, I just want to whet your appetite a little. Maybe entice some of you to get involved. It is the work of a few but in time it could be the collaboration of many. Now to the matter at hand - it’s the new year and that can mean: 2013 ended as swiftly as it started, fireworks, parties and everything smells like star shine, rainbows and butterfly milk. That is, if you’re a muggle. If you’ve managed to fall down the rabbithole of some charming on the outside, gutwrenching on the inside fandom things aren’t always so chipper. These past twelve months have been some of the most emotionally crippling for fandoms from the finale of Breaking Bad to the travesty of the Red Wedding. We’ve lost bad ass vet, Hershel Greene, Carol’s still nowhere, Judith’s missing, Alison’s alive (not sure if that’s a good or bad thing) and Kevin Tran’s dead. DEAD AND GONE! Writers in all their cruel glory, giveth and taketh away. Eleven regenerated halfway through Christmas dinner! I can see Moffat’s happy Grinch face now. Luckily there are ways to deal the transition of a Time Lord. And while you’re struggling to cope why not tuck into some bread and butter pudding. There’s an

Sherlock returns on New Year’s Day with the first episode of its third series, The Empty Hearse. We’re starting the year like we mean to finish – strong! Sherlockian, Andrea Bea, talks about her love for London’s famous detective. Fandoms aside, however you plan on ringing in the new year, make sure you have a GOOD (but responsible) time. Party like last year wasn’t easy. Like you had to fight your way through to the end. You’re alive and doing you despite everything that was thrown at you. Whatever troubles you’ve had remember you survived. Party like you’re still here standing and getting ready to kick ass in 2014. Oh - one more thing. I am very grateful to everyone who has supported and contributed to this adventure. Pauline, Aprilyn and Andy I won’t forget how willing you were to help, a stranger really, when I asked. Also thank you for reading! As I end my very first editor’s letter I do so with a great deal of hope that what I am doing will be the start of something good. quee! Ah the sweet sound of fangirling. This word fits perfectly into the ethos of the type of magazine I wish to create – fresh, funny and fangirly. Squee is an original fangirl lifestyle magazine and website unique in its ability to connect with quirky, geeky young women. We seek to bridge the gap between fandom and femininity. Here are some of the things you can expect from the magazine.

Dear Squee Here we’ll publish some of your letters, posts, emails, questions, tweets and thoughts that you send to us.

Real Life In this section we’ll discuss news and views happening in the actual real world. You know muggle territory. You may find a column or two. If you have a topic you’ll like to discuss, you’re a budding writer or journalism student/graduate get in touch you may well be our new columnist. There’ll be an Advice column and Wellness column; because we care about your wellbeing too. Natter is the area in which we’ll chat to readers, authors, actors and you about life.

Style Faaaashion. Looking good and feeling fine. Slay! No, don’t worry we’re not going to tell you what to wear, how to dress yourself or what you should like. Instead we’re just going to share ideas and places that cater to the unique. You can choose the bits you want. So you can be the great individual that you are! Beauty Because all fangirls are sexy and we want to share all the things you can do to

persistently marinate in that sexy. If you’re shaking your head because you’re secretly telling yourself you aren’t sexy, pretty or anything positively radiant, then you better tell yourself to shut the hell up because all fangirls are sexy and everything else is irrelevant. Okay? Okay.

Feels Our culture, review and fandom news section. Here you’ll find our thoughts on anything pop culture. New TV shows, books, music, films etc.You can get involved too – with reviews of your own. I’d like to start a book club too. Our discussions/meet ups will be published in the magazine and online. The website will track the day-to-day stuff while the magazine will feature the end result – a review or any interesting findings. The book club will depend on the number of people interested. Stuff and Things Anything else we feel you should be aware of! Fanart, great blogs. We’ll showcase your work too. In this section Random & Fandom is where we’ll chat to fangirls/you.

D.I.Y. Think of it as the three C’s. Cooking, crafts and cosplay. Tips, tricks, how to’s, best places to find… all that good stuff! We’ll chat to cosplayers and show off their hard work. Cosplay of the month too. Volunteers are welcome.

The attitude of Squee is funny, fierce and full of sass. Squee is for those geeky young women who want a magazine free from hate. We want to celebrate all things female- our bodies, skin, hair, likes and dislikes. We don’t want to change you or make you hate yourself. We want to love, share and give you a nudge in the right direction should you need one. Our main focus is young women aged 18 and over. It doesn’t mean that anyone below 18 can’t read it or get involved. Take Random & Fandom, for example, in this issue it’s with a 15-year old. While this magazine has feminism at its core it isn’t a social justice magazine. Will social justice issues pop up? Do bears sh*t in the woods? As a human being and woman of colour, I believe it is important to see the flaws in our various fandoms and their representation of minorities. Lord knows I have issues with the representation of women and people of colour on The Walking Dead yet it remains one of my favourites. Don’t get me started of Game of Thrones either! It is a place at the forefront of fandom – Squeedom if you will – for all female geeks to be as unapologetically fangirly as they like.

Clothes made from human hair – fashion statement, taboo or novelty item? I investigate & speak to Jodie Breeds, hairdresser turned hair couture gown designer and Kerry Howley, Creative Art student. he idea of using hair as a fashion resource isn’t new. In the ‘90’s, American, Barber Bill Black created a twin set of bikinis from human hair, which he used as a prop to promote his idea that using hair in different ways could save the world. He said three basic human needs are food, shelter, and clothing. You can grow food in it, build bricks from it, and make clothes from it. As the world's population increases and its resources dwindle, we would do well to use all of the materials at our disposal, even if they're swept from a barbershop floor. Clothing sewn from hair has been on the scene for some time. In 2008, Project Runway's Chris March sent models clothed in human hair down the final runway, and shocked viewers, judges and mentor Tim Gunn. The following year, designers Sonia Rykiel, Jean-Charles de Castelbajac, Maison Martin Margiela and Alena Akhmadullina's included human hair creations in their fashion shows. This hairy plight was amped up by designers like Charlie Le Mindu, VPL, Holly Russell and Grau Wal. Much of this is owed to Mother Monster and slave to fashion Lady Gaga donning dresses from their hair innovated collections. 2011 saw an extravagant hairy creation. Thelma Madine, a renowned dress designer, with the help of Liverpool based hair stylist Ryan Edwards, has possibly created the largest dress made out of human hair. The size 6 dress took over 300 hours to make, used 820 feet of hair and weighs about 33 pounds! Over a period of 12 days, a team of eight people put in around 300 hours of work to complete the dress. The dress is made up of about 10,000 hair wefts combined with 12 underskirts and 1500 crystals. “It’s fair to say we’ll probably not see another dress like it for a very long time,” Ryan Edwards said. The dress was first revealed at the 2011 Alternative Miss Liverpool pageant and Thelma Madine set a price of £50,000 for this unique

wedding dress. Last year a Sunderland hairdresser caught the media’s attention with her hairy haute couture gown. Jodie Breeds, owner of 24 Carat Salon designed a dress made entirely out of human hair. The blonde ensemble was modelled by Holly Lyons in the environmentally-friendly dress section of the Miss England 2012 contest. Jodie’s original idea for the dress came from the beauty pageant and her desire to keep her brand involved. She said: “I wanted my winner of Miss 24 Carat Hair & Beauty 2012 to still stay with my brand theme as well as being eco-friendly Friendly. I’ve worked with hair extensions a lot but never incorporated it into an item of clothing before.” She had already worked extensively with hair extensions “but never incorporated it into an item of clothing before.” She started planning the dress back in September 2011 following Holly’s win. She then gathered the extensions and passed them on to her aunt, Margaret Jenner. It took her aunt six hours in total to stitch it all together. Wearing human hair is still very much a taboo subject. In today’s society, hair is worn with pride but once severed it is viewed as filthy, swept away and binned. As such the idea of clothing made from hair and then worn on our bodies is a grower (no pun intended). Charlie Le Mindu once said: "People just need to get over the fact they are wearing something from their body. They seem to think it is still living and that freaks them out." He added once society gets their heads around wearing hair it will become mainstream like wearing fur- a luxury. Jodie drew on past trends to explain the reluctance

and evidence of this trend’s staying power. For me I struggle to fully appreciate large human hair dresses, like Madine’s gigantic wedding dress. As beautiful as it looks all I keep thinking about is how much all that human hair would have helped cancer patients, who are on waiting lists to get wigs because there aren’t enough people who have 9 inches or more of one length of hair to donate to them. As long as designers wish to create with human hair it should remain within the realms of high fashion for one-off couture pieces. As for why clothing made from human hair will remain taboo, Kerry said it best: “I don't think people can ever get over where the material came from. Materials like bone and hair and teeth are so personal, [once] separated from their 'body' perhaps they can only be a reminder of mortality, violence and decay. I imagine that back in the 60’s there would have been an initial uproar when the mini skirt was first seen on the streets of Britain. All new styles take time to catch on.” Jodie isn’t the only hairdresser creating haute couture pieces from hair. In 2009 Huang Xin, a hairdresser from Beijing created works of art from discarded human hair. Some of his notable artworks include a replica of Tiananmen Square and a model of Barack Obama to celebrate the 60th anniversary of People’s Republic of China and the President of the United States of America’s visit to China respectively. The following year Kim Do, a Vietnamese hairdresser, designed a tunic made from one million meters of hair. The hair was collected from 54 different people across Vietnam, then died and sewn into the dress using a needle. Two years ago, Tsai Shiou-ying, 54, a Taiwanese hairdresser made a pair of high heeled shoes from real human hair. According to Charlie Le Mindu “ in 10 years we'll all be wearing clothes made of human hair, we just need to get our heads round the fact." Perhaps he is right. Jodie believes that through more exposure we may see more hair clothing pieces being designed and made. Clothes from hair is still a somewhat new concept but with the likes of innovative designers finding new ways to use hair in their collections and influential people like Lady Gaga wearing hairy couture, it is feasible that fashion of this kind, can make its way to high street shops. So long as it becomes more contemporary, wearable and accessible. Perhaps the delicate human hair necklaces of, 23 year-old creative art student, Kerry Howley would make a smoother transition for some. When asked if she thought her necklaces could ever be sold on the high street she said: “I would like to think that we may do one day.” However she believes that clothing and accessories made from hair has a place in high fashion “as a statement but probably not everyday fashion.” Either way Kerry’s necklaces serve as an alternative to dressing in hairy clothing

bread & butter pudding SATISFY YOUR SWEET CRAVINGS WITH THIS HEARTY WINTER TREAT

I love this family favourite. Most recipes require custard but I can’t stand custard, so I worked my magic and voila! This version is earthy, warm and well spiced. Just what you need for cold days. Remember day old bread works best.

YOU’LL NEED

25g/1oz butter, plus extra for greasing your baking pan 8 thin slices bread 50g/2oz sultanas 4 tsp cinnamon powder 350ml/12fl oz whole milk 50ml/2fl oz double or single cream your call 1 or 2 free-range eggs 25g/1oz granulated sugar nutmeg, grated to taste

DIRECTIONS

1 Preheat the oven to 180C/355F/Gas 4. 2 Grease a 1 litre/2 pint pie dish with butter. 3 Crusts are optional. Spread each slice, on one side with butter, then cut into triangles for a neat finish or rip the slice in 2 or 3 pieces for a rustic look. 4 Arrange a layer of bread, buttered-side up, in the bottom of the dish, then add a layer of sultanas. Sprinkle with a little cinnamon and then repeat the layers of bread and sultanas, sprinkling with cinnamon, until you have used up all of the bread. Then set aside. 5 Gently warm the milk and cream in a pan over a low heat until it’s lukewarm. Don't let it boil! 6 Crack the eggs into a bowl; add three quarters of the sugar and nutmeg. Then lightly whisk until pale. 7 Add the lukewarm milk and cream mixture then stir well; it should be frothy and runny. If it starts to thicken up use a whisk instead and add some milk. 8 Pour the mixture over the bread layers. 9 Sprinkle the remaining sugar and leave to stand for 10 minutes so the bread could soak up all that goodness. 10 Place the dish into the oven and bake for 20-30 minutes, or until the pudding has set and the top is golden-brown. It should be firm but jiggly.

SERVES 4

hat Peter Capaldi graphic was reblogged by Doctor Who’s official Tumblr which is how it came to my attention. It captures the sadness of Eleven’s regeneration and Matt Smith’s departure; yet there’s a glimmer of hope even excitement – what happens when the clock strikes Twelve? What new adventures are we about to share? When a simple graphic manages to do all that, I had to click on to its creator’s blog for a quick online chat and luckily Pauline didn’t say no.

How did you first get into Doctor Who? Well if you don’t count that i watched the Sarah Jane Adventures when i was 11, I got into Doctor Who via Tumblr and friends.

I was just messing around, it was 4 am and I honestly had never tried making graphics like this before. I didn’t know who I wanted to do a graphic of, but for some reason I decided to go with Peter Capaldi. I really don’t know I just made it up as i went along with it Well colour me impressed! I can’t even make a graphic with a stickman let alone something so delicate and on my first try. How did it feel to have it reblogged by Doctor Who’s Tumblr? TIME OF THE DOCTOR REVIEW & TIPS ON DEALING WITH A REGENERATION

A glance at some potentially big animated films of 2014. If you’ve not watched it yet & don’t mind spoilers – some important things you should know about The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug & some must read books of 2013 that we never quite got around to reading but totally should. And totally will...

Doctor regenerating? ou get new Doctor, you like new Doctor, you love new Doctor, Doctor regenerates. And so the vicious cycle continues. This isn’t new to you. Being a Whovian is knowing regeneration is as inevitable as a companion. However logic is futile now. Once the regeneration is complete you deal with the pitfall of emotions. Days may have passed since Matt Smith’s departure and it still hurts a little, that glimpse of Amy saying farewell to her “raggedy man” was a tearjerker. When it comes to fangirling, regardless of age, emotion and logic are almost always at luggerheads. The following is a snapshot look at that mental battle. If like me you’re still butthurt from that lacklustre episode, Sherlock premieres soon. Silver linings and all that.

How to deal with the pain: Wallow in your messy emotions. This is completely allowed as long as you don’t stay like this for too long. Throw a Doctor Who themed party. Decorate, dress up and dance the hurt away.

Cosplay! Get some friends together and step into the world of Doctor Who. This way you can get the gang back together – Eleven, Amy, Rory, River, Vastra, Jenny, Strax, Clara and the TARDIS. Turn your room into the TARDIS. You can get this door cling from ThinkGeek Everything feels better on the inside!

Ask yourself: “What would Amelia Pond do?” She would wait. Relax, sometimes change is painful and annoying but it can also be a beautiful thing. Remember when Nine became Ten? Ten was a good time too!

The Time of the Doctor Review

f you’re reading this I think it’s safe to assume you’ve watched the episode. I’m not going to go into detail about what happened– loose ends were tied and Eleven regenerated. This is more of a critique – analysis if you will, about the odd taste it left after viewing. There were so many things about this episode that I enjoyed, yet there were so many things that stressed me out

Matt Smith. His Doctor was one of my favourites and he never let me down. A Cyberman’s head, affectionately called Handles was a clever move, in theory. The execution not so much. Sontarans in the snow. All plot lines wrapped up nicely (at a price). I especially love the crack in time/ Gallifrey comes a-knocking since the Doctors managed to save them in The Day of the Doctor. Eleven’s aging: We have seen older Doctors before but one dying of old age while serving badass Santa realness, was fresh and rather adorable. The Amy Pond “Raggedy Man goodnight” was as unexpected as it was moving. Then it hurt because I’m still not over The Angels Take Manhattan. The regeneration itself was a new kind of beautiful. I loved Matt’s speeches, using regeneration energy as a weapon, dropping of the bow tie and “I will always remember when the Doctor was me.” I enjoyed the break away from the traditional one-face-changinginto-another transformation. The blink-and-you’ll-miss-it change was just right. Peter Capaldi has the maddest stare, kidney issues and TARDIS piloting problems. Roll on Series 8!
