Good afternoon, and welcome to today’s game against Litherland REMYCA. We would like to welcome the REMY players, staff and supporters to The Brian Addison Stadium.

It has been over a month since we have had to create a new matchday magazine as we had already printed the Isle of Man copies. As usual, there is plenty to read and some away day reviews of our trips to Avro and FC St Helens.

The nominations for Non league Bible Progrmame of the Year have also opened and it would mean a lot to us as editors if you could put us forward to help us maintain our award.

Hello everyone and welcome to this afternoon’s NWCFL Premier Division match between Squires Gate and Litherland REMYCA.

A warm welcome to our visitors from Litherland, as well of course as our loyal home supporters.

We come into the game on the back of Tuesday’s 1-0 victory over Ashton Athletic that made it back-toback league wins, as we also won 2-0 at Barlick the week before.

While our performances in those games may not have been our best, it’s pleasing to

see us grind through and win those kind of games. Tuesday’s win lifted us up to 12th in the table, and I’d love for us to push on even more and finish as high as we possibly can this season.

We did exit the Macron Cup last Saturday at the Quarter Final stage which was a disappointment. We didn’t create enough going forward and FC St Helen’s took their chances when they came, and we lost 2-0.

We can focus on the league now though, and that continues today.

Robbo! You're our cover star for today's game against REMYCA? Are you confident we can get something from today's game?

It’s going to be a tough game, we need to earn the right first as REMYCA are in a good run of form. But if we turn up, play and compete for 90 I would back us against anyone.

You've been involved at the club for a few years now, could you give us a brief insight into your role at the club?

I do a fair bit in the junior side of the club bringing new faces into the stadium to hopefully grow in the community. Then potentially grow our junior set up. Then the small bit with the first team & committee

Can you talk us through your matchday routine?

From getting to the ground, it’s quite simple really, go through the last details with the gaffer and then make sure the warm ups are

Which coach inspires you the most?

I fell in love with football when Sir Bobby Robson was manager at Newcastle so he would be the first, beyond that I enjoy watching coaches who have an eye for the fine details no matter the level.

About 3 more years of development, the club need to be patient and grow in every department. However taking a trophy tomorrow would be a brilliant start!

I was at the Everton vs Crystal Palace game a few weeks ago and my seat is quite close to the front. Wilfred Zaha was near the since I don’t like him I tried to climb over the seats to get to the front to give him a bit of stick and I ended up tripping over the chairs and landing face first on the floor instead.

Worst dresser at the club? I haven’t seen enough of the lads in other gear apart from the squires gate tracksuit so can’t answer that one.

The visitors started the match on top, going close to an opener twice within the opening 13 minutes. Firstly, a ball to the back post was header back across goal, with the chance headed narrowly over the bar from close range. Gate keeper Nathan Pennington then had to be quick off his line to make a smart save after a brilliant ball in behind the Gate defence.

Northwich Vics took a deserved lead on 16 minutes though from the penalty spot. A corner caused some havoc in the Gate defence, with Isaac Abankwah judged to have blocked a shot with his arm. Jackson stepped up for Vics and fired into the top corner, despite Pennington guessing the right way. Gate looked to get back in the game, with an effort from Nathan Cliffe easily held by the Vics keeper. A low delivery by Theo Ball then was spilled by the keeper but it just about evaded Callum Sandle on the rebound.

43 minutes. The on-loan striker did brilliantly to take down a long ball by Abankwah, hold off his man and get a yard on his next challenger before calmly slotting into the bottom corner.

Gate looked sharper at the start of the second half, with Nathan Cliffe putting a volley just wide after his initial free kick was blocked. Gate won a dangerous free kick on the edge of the Vics box on 56 minutes, but after it was well defended, Gate gave the ball away allowing Vics to counter. Sephton raced away down the left into the box and fired past Pennington to put the visitors back in front against the run of play.

Theo Ball did brilliantly to race away down the right on 81 minutes, but after a brilliant run, his low cross was behind Sandle and Vics easily cleared. Gate had one last chance in stoppage time after Cliffe won a free kick just outside the box. Ryan Riley stepped up, but curled his effort agonisingly wide of the top corner.

The visitors started the better of the two sides, with Nathan Bartram shown an early yellow card after just three minutes after a loose ball from Alex Welsh forced the foul. Isle of Man’s first real chance though came on 12 minutes, but the effort was curled wide from just inside the box.

It was then Gate’s turn to get on top, with Chris Webster rattling the crossbar after an incredible strike from distance on 19 minutes. Webster got his goal though just two minutes later. A deep corner from Nathan Cliffe was only half cleared, with Webster heading the loose ball into the bottom corner.

Gate then doubled their advantage just two minutes later. A good ball forward by Cliffe found Callum Sandle, who did well to feed Moore into the area. The midfielder did well to fire a ball across goal, with a combination of Dan Gray and an Isle of Man

ner, with Gray claiming the goal!.

Gate got their third goal on 38 minutes, with Nathan Cliffe scoring what has to be Gate’s goal of the season. Cliffe pounced on a loose ball on the halfway line and unleashed a thunderous strike over the goalkeeper and straight into the top corner to send the Gate players wild. A truly unbelievable strike.

The visitors were intent to fight back in the second half, and pulled a goal back on 51 minutes. Gate made a hash of clearing their lines, with the loose ball volleyed home clinically byWhitley into the bottom corner.

The visitors pulled another goal back on 85 minutes. A poor goal kick from Jungo was intercepted, with Higgins driving into the box and firing past Jungo after doing well to hold off Abankwah and Riley

A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE REMYCA

Litherland REMYCA FC began life in the Seaforth area of Liverpool as St Thomas F.C. (1959). Players were recruited mainly from Seaforth and Bootle, and the team later became known as Bootle C.L.B. (Church Lads Brigade).

One year later, REMYCA UTD F.C. came into being, the name deriving from connections with both REM Social Club and Bootle YMCA. The team, after successive championships and earning a reputation for playing attractive football, were accepted into the I Zingari League.

The 1990’s was a significant period in the club’s history, and the most successful, as both Premier League and Cup doubles were achieved in seasons 1993/94, 1994/95 and 1995/96 followed by again winning the Challenge Cup in the 1998/99 season

REMYCA are now based at Litherland Sports Park. Our mid-long term aims are to work with local councils to identify a site and build a community

facility for all sides under the REMYCA banner as well as the local area. In 2013, the Management Committee of REMYCA began exploring the potential to grow and develop the club.

The first stage of the new development plan was to add Litherland to the club name so as to identify with the local area and enhance the community ethos of the club. A key appointment was Colin Begbie as head of youth development, who’s experience and network of football contacts has proven invaluable. The club then applied, and secured a league position worthy of promotion to the NWCFL in 2014.

In their first season, the club finished 9th and reached the semi final of the Reusch Cup, only to be beaten by Atherton Colls. A first ever appearance in the LCFA Senior Cup saw the club beaten by Skelmersdale United. REMYCA went on to reach the semi final in three consecutive years after this defeat.

In 2015, Phil Stafford was given the job as first team manager following a successful stint at Maghull. In his second season, he led the club to a thrilling battle for promotion, which culminated in defeat at the final hurdle - the playoff final. That game holds the attendance record in NWCFL history, with 1303 supporters flocking to LSP.

In March 2016, the quarter final of the LCFA Senior Cup saw Everton travel to LSP and fall to a solid, containing REMYCA by a goal to nil. Along the way, REMYCA made their first ever appearance in the FA Cup, beating AFC Liverpool 2-0 in a game live streamed across the BBC iPlayer. In a shock turn of events, McNally left the club by mutual consent at the end of 2017-18. James Olsen was chosen to take over in the summer of 2018 and took the club to the NWCFL Premier Division but he then departed midway through the season. Former manager Phil Stafford returned to guide the club to consolidation within the division but in 2021 He left the club for a second time, which former Derek Goulding was appointed in 2021 as the man to consolidate The Remy in the Premier Division.

Avro FC, home of the best footy scran in the NWCFL. This had been an away day to look forward to all season.

With Jay at work, obviously, it was set to be Dan, Helen and me for the trip up to Oldham. Three in the car became four, as Luke asked us to pick up Prince Yelegon on the way too. On the back of what was probably about 4 hours sleep, I hopped into Dan’s trusty Peugeot and set off onto the motorway.

We arrived fairly early, with the intention of having some pre-match food and watching the second half of the 12:30 Premier League kick off.

We were slightly disappointed to see the food van, Macie’s, only took cash, so we left the ground to find a nearby cash point. I’ll never get over that I had to pay £1.75 to withdraw my own money,butanyway.

Back at Avro I ordered a Cheeseburger and Salt & Pepper chips, with Dan opting for a Bacon Barm and a hash brown to cure his hangover from his pub sesh the night before that I wasn’tinvitedto.

I did also ask for some of the salt & pepper chicken wings that were on the menu, onlyto be told they don’t serve those anymore. My burger was excellent though, and my chips beautifully seasoned, definitely worth the wait.

We got into the clubhouse to watch West Ham vs Chelsea, and have a drink before Gate kicked off. We made our way out to the pitch ready for kick off. Avro were top of the league going into the match, so we knew it was going to be a big ask to get anything out of the game.

The hosts went in 1-0 up at the break, probably feeling irked they hadn’tscoredoneortwomore.

The second half was even tougher, as a strong display from Avro and a couple of injuries for Gate seeing us come away with a 4-0 defeat.

I was generally content to put it up to a bad day at the office and move on, with Luke Evans having a similar attitude in the postmatch interview. With the amount of players we had our injured and the quality of our opponent it was always going to be a tough game.

We made our way back to Blackpool, with my always trusty directions getting us back in good time.

A write up of my Match Report was done when I got home, sending my work off to the gazette and uploading to the website to round off a days work.

STADIUM FOOD & DRINK

Never a big fan of the 4g pitch, but the stand on the side was a decent place to watch from. A well built ground that I think is fairlynew?

Clubhouse was of a good quality with big screens showing the footy.

Has to be full marks here. Burger and salt & pepper chips were delightful, and Dan’s bacon looked pretty spot on too. Good selection of drinks in the bar as well. Allfairly priced.

Another Saturday, another away day. This time it was a cup quarter final for Squires Gate as we travelled to St Helens. With no Helen or Jay, it was me and James that were making the trip to the town which lies in-between Merseyside and Lancashire.

Before we made the journey, me and James agreed to get a spoons breakfast to fuel ourselves for the day. As some of you may know, I'm a fussy eater so I replaced my egg with a sausage. Spoons are 50/50 with their breakfasts, sometimes they hit the spot and sometimes you get served green hash browns (Stoke, that's aimed at you). This one was a solid 7/10.

It was soon enough 11.30 and we were setting off to St Helens. An early start to try and get there for the Villa vs Arsenal game.

Our journey on the way down went quite quick, with James' playlist being bang on too and for once, he didn't get us lost.

We found a Greene King pub showing the game, and with both of us still full from our spoons brekkie, we decided to just have a beverage and have a chat about the line-up and our thoughts ahead of the game. As the Villa v Arsenal game approached half time, we headed 2 minutes down the road to Windleshaw Sports Ground, home of FC St Helens. The lady on the gate thoroughly inspected our passes before finally letting us enter, we also picked up a copy of their matchday programme.

We had a quick tour of the ground, and headed straight to the clubhouse in time to see Arsenal climb back to the top of the league after 2 injury time goals.

A very quick flick through their well presented programme; however, in terms of content, there wasn't much. Before we knew it, it was time to head out for kick off.

Despite going in at half time 1 0 down, it was more frustrating that nothing was going ourway on the day.

After I had my pre-match pie, I wasn’t too hungry so me and James shared some angel slices and had a brew in the half time hospitality before heading back out for the second half.

A second half penalty was given after a mix up at the back, which pretty much killed the game off. Adding in the fact that the home side were doing their best to run down the clock.

The bench were quite quick to throw on a flat ball every time the ball went out of play, and this was eventually noticed by the referee when Riley had passed the ball back to Penni and their bench tried to get the flat ball in play instead. You get the idea.

Anyway, our cup run came to an end and it’s now time to focus on maintaining our league position.

AWAY DAY REVIEWS

STADIUM FOOD & DRINK

A pretty standard ground. There was a clubhouse situated on the far side, but me and James agreed there wasn’t much atmosphere around the ground. We also couldn’t hear the music from the dugouts, but we did hear that they had “The BusinessTiesto” as their walkout song, just like we do.

To be fair, it was actually a really nice clubhouse with a bar area. There was Moretti and Dark Fruits on tap and to make it even better, there was a peppered steak pie available - my No.1 choice of pie.

However, as much as I appreciate a Hollands Peppered Steak pie, it doesn’t give uniqueness.

PROGRAMME HOSPITALITY

On first glance, the design was very good and well put together. I can’t fault the 20 pages for a MACRON Cup game as it isn’t a necessity to produce one.

There wasn’t much in terms of content to be honest. Just the brief history of both clubs and player pics, words from the manager, etc.

JOURNEY

The journey on the way down was straightforward but the dreaded Merseyside roundabouts.

James’ playlist was spot on with a mixture of Sherlocks,Wombats, and 1975.

The journey back was a bit more frustrating having been knocked out, but nothing really memorable to note.

It was the standard half time hospitality, with some lovely Mr Kipling angel slices to accompany a brew and Sky Sports News in the committee room.

MOST POINTS IN A PREMIER LEAGUE SEASON

MANCHESTER CITY 100PTS

Only one team have ever won 100 points in a single English top-flight season: Manchester City in 2017-18. They only hit the century thanks to an injury-time goal from striker Gabriel Jesus away at Southampton on the final day of the season, with that 1-0 victory taking them to the landmark.

32 wins set a new English top-flight record for the highest tally of victories in a single season, but they replicated this feat only a season later when winning the title again in 2018-19, albeit with two points fewer (98). 16 of these wins came away from home – another Premier League record – while equalling Tottenham Hotspur’s English top-flight record set in 1960-61. However, based on three points for a win, City edged Spurs out on points with 50 in 2017-18 (W16 D2 L1) compared to Spurs’ tally of 49 (W16 D1 L4).

18 of their 32 wins same in a consecutive run between August 26 and December 27, setting another Premier League record (which has since been equalled by Liverpool).

This season also saw them score 106 goals in the Premier League – the most by a side in a single campaign since the competition began in 1992. The previous top-flight team to score more in an English league season were Spurs in 1962-63 (111), but they were still some distance off Aston Villa’s phenomenal 128 goals across 42 games in 1930-31 – a campaign that only saw them finish second behind Arsenal, who scored 127 times themselves.

As mentioned, City secured 16 away wins in this season, while their overall goal difference of +79 is still the best seen in the competition across a single season.

All these records helped them smash yet another one, by winning the Premier League title by a huge 19 points over second-placed Manchester United – an all-time top-flight league record.

With Pep Guardiola’s first Premier League title as a manager, he added to his already packed honours list. This was a seventh top-flight league title after winning La Liga on three occasions with Barcelona as a coach and another three Bundesliga titles with Bayern Munich in Germany.

LIVERPOOL 100PTS

Liverpool picked up their first-ever Premier League title and their first in the top-flight since 1989-90 with this outstanding campaign. The 2019-20 season was the strangest of all, with a pandemic forcing the season to an abrupt halt in March before returning in June without fans in stadiums – this didn’t stop the Reds from lifting the trophy, though.

When the season stopped on March 9, Liverpool were 25 points clear of Manchester City at the top of the table on 82 points from 29 games. At a ratio of 2.83 points per game, Jürgen Klopp’s team were on course to break the 100point barrier, but the enforced break

affected this and Liverpool “only” managed 17 points in their remaining nine matches (1.89 per game).

2019-20 saw Liverpool equal the alltime English top-flight winning run of 18 games (set by Manchester City in 201718), with this run coming between October and February. This helped them seal the title after playing just 31 matches, following Man City’s defeat to Chelsea on June 25 – the earliest English title win in top-flight history.

This was Klopp’s hat-trick of top-flight league titles, after previously winning the German Bundesliga with Borussia Dortmund in both 2010-11 and 2011-12.

MANCHESTER CITY 98PTS

2018-19 saw Manchester City retain the Premier League title – something that they’d failed to do following their previous two title victories in 2011-12 and 2013-14. However, despite achieving an outstanding 98 points, they still fell two points short of their Premier League record from 2017-18.

After suffering a shock 2-1 away defeat to Newcastle United on January 29, City regained their focus to blow their fellow title contenders away – including Liverpool, who finished only one point below them. Pep Guardiola’s side won their last 14 league matches, while also picking up the League Cup and FA Cup in this period. As they also won the Community Shield at the start of the campaign, City became the first side to ever hold all four of England’s primary football trophies.

City went into the final day of the season needing to defeat Brighton & Hove Albion away to make sure of a back-to-back Premier League title, and they did so in style. They suffered an early scare, with Brighton’s Glenn Murray opening the scoring on 27 minutes, but the lead only lasted 83 seconds before Sergio Agüero equalised and then further goals from Aymeric Laporte, Riyad Mahrez and İlkay Gündoğan sealed the title.

This was the first time that a side had retained the Premier League title since Manchester United did so in 2008-09, and it’s not happened again since.

With 32 wins, they replicated their own English top-flight record from only a season before – but 2018-19 saw them lose two more games (4) than they did in 2017-18 (2). City also set seasonal records for most minutes leading (2088) and fewest minutes trailing (132) in a single Premier League season.

LIVERPOOL 97 PTS

Liverpool pushed Manchester City all the way in 2018-19, but their fantastic tally of 97 fell just short of helping them secure their first Premier League title. In fact, Liverpool’s 97-point total was the most by any team not to win an English top-flight title – no team has ever won 90+ points or won 30+ games and not lifted the English top-flight trophy before or since 2018-19.

took charge of Chelsea following backto-back league titles in Portugal with FC Porto. Even more impressive was his UEFA Champions League title with the Portuguese giants only a week before his move to London.

Mourinho’s first season at Chelsea saw an awesome defensive display, with both 25 clean sheets and only 15 goals conceded setting Premier League records by a team in a single season. The only other team to concede as few as 15 goals in an English top-flight season were Preston North End in 1888 -89 (also unbeaten in that campaign), but they only played 22 matches that season. Chelsea’s title win was their first in 50 years, while their 95-point tally was the most in an English top-flight season until Man City’s astonishing 2017-18 campaign.

2004-05 can also be remembered for possibly the best relegation battle at the bottom of the Premier League – no side was relegated until the final day, with Southampton, Norwich City and Crystal Palace eventually losing out to West Bromwich Albion for the drop to the Championship.

People tell me I watch a lot of football. They’re probably right, but it’s never for the sake of ticking off grounds or anything like that – simply to see games, drink some beer and eat whatever’s going. Just like the Wigan RL song, “We will follow you wherever you may be was what brought me back here last autumn after almost two decades’ absence.
