This project aims to enhance the living of migrant leprosy community. The project involved surveying the existing households and mapping of the household to understand the current living conditions and help build a better standard of living for the community without compromising the existing public spaces of the community. Through this project, the community since did not belong to Ahmedabad and were exploited due to their disease where not provided good housing. The area is prone to massive flooding due to its low lying slope and the canal overflowing. The community is of predominantly begging community and some of them work as daily wage laborers and they have a better income then others. The size of the houses vary from one another based on income and economic condition. The project intends to help in bringing a behavioral change in terms of hygiene and sanitation and also makes sure that the community is also evolving along with the current urban fabric. The design was done keeping in mind incremental to the houses provided and keeping light and ventilation in mind.

Area Resource Centre: Redevelopment of a dilapidated public toilet Site Location: Rajendranagar, Kolhapur, Maharashtra Site Area: 384 sq m Total Built-up: 236.6 sq m The design for the project was done with consideration of the requirements of the community in Rajendra Nagar settlement. The need to remove the existing public toilet since the entire community had received their own household toilets under the Swacch Bharat Mission. There is a room for vocational training and one room for which can be used for multipurpose hall and two toilets for the users of the Centre. The multipurpose hall which can be divided with the help of a partition wall which can be used to divide the room. The women of the community are interesting stitching and tailoring. Since there is also a Mahila Mandal in the community they require a safe space where they can meet and try to learn new skills. Also since there is a medical van that come they require a gathering space and this Area Resource Centre aims to be a space for such community gatherings and enable the community to learn more skills.

One home, one toilet mission Site Location: Navi Mumbai and Thane, Mumbai, Maharashtra Site Area: Different for each house Total Built-up: Different for each house The following in an initiated by Shelter Associates, Pune that aims to open defecation in India and provide toilets to each households in urban slum areas of Navi Mumbai, Thane, Pune, Kolhapur and Pimpri Chinchward areas. The following is a documentation of two households where the placement of the toilet was found to be rather interesting breaking the common stereotypes of not having the toilet with the kitchen or having it in front of the god’s idols. In these urban slum settlements, it was found that it is difficult to find space to help accommodate all the required spaces. Although these slums have a public toilet at various points, these public toilets have found to be unhygienic and unsafe especially for women. It was found in a few of the interviews that it was difficult for the woman of the household to go to these public toilets alone leaving their home or even to allow their daughters to use the public toilet on their own. With the help of the “One home, one toilet” initiate everyone is provided with their own toilet and have the freedom to maintain it as per their use. Architecture and Cinema: Establishing context through narrative and visualized space in cinema

Cinematic Representation

Architectural Representation

•Focus and Subject •Scale and Proportion •Depth of Image •Geometric •Quality of space relationship

Architecture and cinema have interacted very closely with very little conscious effort. Both architecture and cinema are mediums that evoke strong visual experiences. For example, we often think about the movie “Dil chahta hai” and picture Goa and the Chapora Fort. ( The visual impact of cinema is found to be larger than that of any other art form. The interest to take up this topic came when I watched the making of the movie “The Grand Budapest Hotel” by Wes Anderson. It is through this movie that I decided to take a look at some of the movies that revolve around a single household and yet set the context. This led to taking up Devdas as a case study, the idea was to see how the story of Devdas that was first written as a book and later adapted multiple times became synonymous to a “drunken man on the path of self-destruction.” The paper tries to see how Devdas that talks about a particular time period is shown by different directors in a different way. The paper used the fiction and the script of the director to enhance how context is established. This is an attempt to explore the connection between architecture and cinema through the case of Devdas.

Roots : An artist’s retreat Site Location: Imaginary site in a valley. Site Area: 40,475 sq m Total Built-up: 38,000 sq m(approx)

The project was to design a community center for artists where they make and display their works and conduct workshops. The site was on our choice and was a hypothetical site which is situated in a valley with a water body which flows as we wanted to create a scenic beautiful view. The idea of the project was to provide a space that is interactive and gives a sense of escapism. The area of the site is 10 acres (40,475 sq m) that comprises of 7 cottages, 1 art gallery, 1 auditorium, 1 library, 1 media center, 1 meeting hall, 1 open air theatre, and 1 clinic. The cottages are over looking the common spaces. The activities the artists indulge in are painting, display, conferences, workshops, and cultural performance spaces.

Institutional Design Site Location: Ram Rahim Thekra, Ahmedabad, Gujarat Site Area: 2,200 sq m Total Built-up: 1,320 sq m

The institution design semester started of with studying the importance of an institution. The site given to us was near the Sabarmati Riverfront in a tekara (meaning: slum) where there was an existing N.G.O named Manav Gulzar. The above drawings are a schematic drawing done in a group of 5 students who studied and mapped the activities of the area and tried to understand the need and importance of a institution here. The area comprised of people who used to worked on construction sites, as domestic help, garlic peeling are some of the activities. We were asked to develop the program and the brief for the given site on the basis of the people and their needs on site.

Bold and beautiful Mansion: Residential Site Location: Lal Bungalow C.g. Road, Ahmedabad, Gujarat. Site Area:3,000 sq m (approx.) Total Built-up: 966 sq m The site for the residence was at a commercial busy street known as C.G road in Ahmedabad. The house was for three women who are friends since school and who are old in age and hence the design initially consisted only of a ground floor but in order to understand the structural implications and the building implications of the technical drawing I added a studio and a bathroom on the first floor. The shape of the house came as a derivation from the idea that the location of the house being on a commercially active road and since it is a house for old people the idea of a courtyard seemed to be something that would keep the house traditional in a way. The material used is of random rubble stone masonry with exposed concrete. The flooring is of vitrified tiles in the rooms, ceramic matte finished tiles in the bathrooms, white granite flooring in the corridors and the staircase. There was use of china mosaic in the terrace of the first floor. The walls in the bathrooms have vitrified tiles and the ceiling had finish of cement slurry.

Artist’s Studio: Designing through model making Site Location: Nirma University, Near Law Canteen, Ahmedabad, Gujarat Site Area: 120 sq m Total Built-up: 80 sq m The site given to us was in the Nirma University campus where there is a canteen close by and the idea of the studio was to provide a workplace for an artist where he / she can work and exhibit his / her work. The idea of the studio was to create a working space that does not create a claustrophobic environment. My intention with this studio was to focus on the functional aspect of the studio in terms of the placement and approach to each room and space. The idea was to provide a large room without any restriction in terms of furniture. The idea of providing a large door on the side was to help in loading and unloading of large sculptures and materials.

Working with C.S.E.B at Auroville Earth Institute The workshop a Auroville Earth Institute was of two weeks where we learn about the various aspects of earth based techniques of construction and using compressed stabilized earth blocks. The first week focused on the theory aspects where we learn how to calculate and figure out the stability of an arch. I also learned about the history of the use of earth blocks and adobe bricks in the past and how it has changed over time. I learned that compressed earth blocks have a tremendous potential to be used in construction and are also very climatically friendly. The second week comprised on the hands on understanding of the material and it’s implications in the construction process. In random groups we were asked to make an arch, vault and a dome. I learned the various kinds of domes and their construction technique.

Measure Drawing of a house in Jodhpur The related study program is an initiative by the college to help us explore the different materials used in construction, the designs of vernacular architecture that has been existing for so many years in our country. The following are two drawings of the houses in Brahmapuri, Jodhpur, Rajasthan. The houses were all blue in color to help in keeping the house cool during summers and to help prevent the insects into the house. The use of the courtyard in the center changed through the day and houses most of them had a lot of deep niches which helped with the storage of various good and items. The house was measure drawing using physical measure tapes and the drawings were then made on computer aided softwares. It was understood after comparing houses with fellow batch mates that most of the houses had a courtyard and skylight cut out which was covered using fiber boards and polythene during the monsoon seasons.
