AN INVITATION TO EXPLORE YOUR CREATIVITY I have always seen creativity as a unique human force that shapes this world and I have strived to nurture it whenever I could.

Sixteen years ago, S&R Foundation began by supporting talented individuals in the arts and sciences. We aspired to especially help those at an early stage in their careers, because I know from personal experience how impactful that support can be. Originally an award-giving foundation, S&R developed a unique methodology to recognize, incubate and showcase talented individuals working hard to make the world a better place.

Over 10 years, S&R moved from solely giving awards to taking a more holistic approach. The first program, the Global Leadership Initiative, now the Kingfisher Global Leadership Program, was launched in 2011. Since then, S&R continued to grow and transform through additional programming such as the Overtures Concert Series and the Halcyon Incubator. Through just the first 40 ventures at the Halcyon Incubator, the fellows have positively changed the lives of nearly 300,000 people around the world. I’ve always had high aspirations for our efforts, but the Halcyon Incubator’s incredible success and rapid growth have not only been a source of pride for me, but also inspired upcoming change.

I invite you to read about what we have accomplished, the changes we experienced, and our new direction. See how our circle of supporters, partners, and volunteers has grown — this diverse and ever-expanding network has become an essential community, magnifying the strength of our impact.

But reading is not the only thing I encourage you to do in this annual report. Just as we have used our creativity, experimented and transformed, I ask you to galvanize that potential within yourself. Be bold, weave color and creativity into the pages. HALCYON INCUBATOR The Halcyon Incubator program, launched in September 2014, supports fearless social entrepreneurs through an 18-month fellowship. This fellowship includes a five-month residency period and access to strategic, legal and PR support, mentors, and a network of potential funders. The program provides a platform for creativity, allowing forward-thinkers to address twenty-first century challenges and achieve meaningful results.

2016 HIGHLIGHTS Halcyon Incubator continued to grow its leadership in the social enterprise field, launching the Social Enterprise Ecosystems Report. For the first time, the impact sector has a framework to measure how well a city is supporting its social entrepreneurs.

And good news: Washington, D.C. ranked #1!

Our fellows continue to make incredible progress. Among many prestigious recognitions, the fellows took top prize at the 2016 Global Entrepreneurship Summit and were awarded the Tory Burch Fellowship, D.C. Entrepreneur of the Year Award, the Diana Davis Spencer Fellowship, the Lenosis Family Entrepreneurship Prize and entry into the first class at the Chobani Incubator. They have also gone on to receive catalytic funding from Draper Richards Kaplan, Rockefeller Foundation, Acumen and more.

HALCYON INCUBATOR SPRING 2016 COHORT 4 Sam Pressler — Armed Services Arts Partnership (ASAP) The Armed Services Arts Partnership builds and sustains communities around the arts at no cost to veterans and military families by partnering with respected nonprofits and colleges. ASAP focuses on developing the literary, musical, and comedic skills of its veterans in stigma-free, community-based environments. In the process, ASAP fosters resiliency, improves well-being among participants and bridges divides by connecting veterans and local communities through the arts.

Farah Brunache — Electric Feel Electric Feel offers a portable storage device that charges electric vehicles. The goal of Electric Feel is to make electric vehicle ownership more convenient, thus encouraging more people to make this environmentally friendly investment that will have a significant impact on carbon emissions and the effects of climate change.

Daniel Hill — Green Impact Campaign Green Impact Campaign (GIC) provides cloud-based tools and training to university students across the country to conduct free energy assessments for local, small businesses. GIC is working to reduce the environmental impact of small businesses while better equipping the next generation of climate leaders.

By reimagining online petitions as an all-or-nothing crowdfunding engine, Spendrise enables scalable, intuitive campaigns that leverage actual dollars at corporate, civic and educational institutions.

Charlene Brown and Faran Negarestan — ReciproCare ReciproCare improves the reliability of homecare for elderly and disabled persons by finding homecare worker capacity hidden in plain sight. The ReciproCare mobile application matches the availability, skills and location of homecare workers to meet the needs of homecare agencies with gaps in coverage.

Jeffrey Prost-Greene, Kristof Grina, Kathleen O’Keefe — Up Top Acres Up Top Acres designs, installs and operates rooftop farms. It seeks to establish agriculture as a fixture of urban life by farming on underutilized rooftops, distributing food locally and providing educational programming. Up Top Acres converts neglected spaces into income sources and environmental safeguards, transforming a societal and environmental drain into a valuable commodity.

Yoko Sen — Sen Sound Sen Sound aims to alleviate suffering by transforming sound design in hospitals. Patients and their families suffer from noise pollution. Clinicians suffer from alarm fatigue, a major safety hazard. Hospitals, as systems, suffer from disease-centered design. Yoko envisions human-centered sound design to bring more dignity to our hospital experience.

Prasoon Kumar — winterHYDE winterHYDE is a life-saving shelter that protects homeless and displaced communities living in cold regions around the globe.

It is a fully insulated, lightweight shelter that provides privacy and protection from the elements for a family of five. winterHYDE is designed to be installed within 15 minutes without tools or anchoring.

Noobtsaa Philip Vang — Foodhini Foodhini is a for-profit social enterprise focused on creating sustainable income generation opportunities for marginalized immigrant communities through food commerce. Foodhini provides a commercial kitchen for independent immigrant home chefs to leverage their culinary skills and prepare their authentic home-cooked ethnic cuisines.

Through Foodhini’s digital platform, the chefs can then sell their meals directly to customers.

HALCYON INCUBATOR FALL 2016 COHORT 5 Gator Halpern and Sam Teicher — Coral Vita Coral Vita helps to restore our world’s dying reefs by growing corals on land and transplanting them into dying, endangered reef ecosystems. Coral reef ecosystems support 500 million people and generate $30 billion annually, but 75 percent are projected to die by 2050. Coral Vita’s innovative farming system can grow coral at up to 50 times natural rates while enhancing the corals’ resiliency to climate change.

Ashley King-Bischof — Markit Opportunity Markit Opportunity is a for-profit social enterprise with a mission to improve smallholder farmer incomes by connecting them to new and existing markets in the East African community through a trusted and transparent mobile trading platform.

Carey Anne Nadeau — Open Data Nation Open Data Nation, a woman-owned B-Corp, creates plug-and-play, productivity-based solutions that combine open, public data with data science techniques to increase the transparency and productivity of public agencies. Open Data Nation tackles the most pressing urban issues, using open data to predict outcomes, prioritize resources and establish performance metrics.

Stacie Whisonant — PYT Funds, Inc. PYT Funds, Inc. (“Pay Your Tuition”) is the only currently available debt reduction company for private student loans. It combines crowd-funding, philanthropy and data science with traditional student loan funding to help students tackle the growing college loan funding gap. Through its proprietary online platform, PYT identifies and qualifies high-achieving students from moderate to low-income families and underserved communities.

Gary Mao — Roots Studio Roots Studio helps rural artists increase their income by finding new monetization channels via the digitized versions of their creations. In digital format, Roots Studio can distribute their works instantly over the internet, bypassing the physical shipping of goods and taking significant costs out of the value chain.

Phil Esterman and David McPeek — Storytime Storytime sends free stories by text message and messaging apps to families without books. It has increased nightly reading by 160 percent and is 300 times cheaper than shipping paperbacks. Through the U.S. Office of Head Start, Storytime now works with 10,000 parents to encourage every family to read together and to talk face-to-face.

Bobby Moore and Zéluis Teixeira — SOAR SOAR was a K–12 online platform empowering students to showcase their talents and fund their academic needs. With parental approval and support from teachers, students launched crowdfunding campaigns to fund specific needs in their academic development.

STUDIOS PROGRAM In May 2016, S&R Foundation launched Studios Program, a pilot program providing eight months of free studio space at the Fillmore School to 12 socially engaged D.C. artists. This pilot was initiated for two reasons: to inform and guide our team as we implement a deep arts residency program; and to provide much-needed studio space to local artists.

The program culminated in the “Ward 12” exhibition at Halcyon House December 8 -19, 2016 – celebrating the artists’ work across a range of media, including painting, performance, literature, film, fashion, dance and sculpture and installation. The 12 artists were united by their varied expressions of social consciousness and an awareness of some of the most intractable collective issues of our present moment, including the harmful effects of climate change, the crisis in Syria, protests in North Dakota and the future of our urban environments.

Artists participating in the Studios Program also provided feedback for the design implementation of the Halcyon Arts Lab fellowship, launching in Fall 2017, ensuring that the program is focused on the needs of practicing artists.

MUSIC AT THE FILLMORE SCHOOL In 2016, S&R Foundation provided space and arts education to two outstanding organizations.

Supporting students from the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Washington, S&R Foundation provided 36 lessons in violin and music theory in partnership with the Washington Conservatory of Music.

S&R Foundation also provided eight months of free rehearsal space for Sticks + Bars, a Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit marimba ensemble open to D.C. youths in grades 5-12.

Marion Colomer is a French artist working in Washington, D.C. She has developed a technique of embroidery stitched on her paintings, collaborating with Indian craftsmen. Her attempt was to create an atmosphere that immerses the viewer in an organic painting in constant evolution.

2016 STUDIOS PROGRAM ARTISTS Eames Armstrong works in performance, sound, painting, language and time. Her recent work has explored the intersections and dissonances of noise and queerness, in solo and collaborative works. She likes challenge – art that is difficult and filled with complicated gestures, softness and the ritual celebration of confusion and illegibility.

Ayana Zaire Cotton is a creative director for DISTRIKT, a print art journal capturing the culture of D.C.’s metro area youth through a political lens. Her individual art practice consists of her eponymous clothing line, AYANA ZAIRE, which communicates sentiments surrounding class, race, gender and sexuality.

Monica Jahan Bose is a Bangladeshi-American artist, lawyer and activist. Her paintings, works on paper, videos, performances and installations are symbolic narratives addressing gender, women’s literacy and sexuality, and climate change.

Tarik “Konshens the Mc” Davis is a hip-hop artist, songwriter, educator and youth advocate from Washington, D.C. He is currently an advisor on the GRAMMY Chapter Board, Voting Member of the GRAMMY Recording Academy and GRAMMY Museum Teaching Artist.

Erik Moe’s interdisciplinary work aims to provoke longterm thinking in our relationship to landscape and the built environment. His ongoing project, “Future Cartographic Society,” describes twenty-third century utopias in neighborhoods of D.C. and across North America

Reilly Dowd has visited more than 50 countries on four continents, and exploration has fostered her passion for culture and storytelling. She has spent the last year directing and producing her first feature documentary film, “The Language of Laughter,” set in Jordan’s Zaatari Refugee Camp a few miles from the Syrian border.

Daniel Phoenix Singh is the artistic director and president of Dakshina, Daniel Phoenix Singh Dance Company. Working from a broad palette of styles such as Bharatanatyam, modern dance and social dance, Daniel creates vibrant dances that mirror the communities that inspire him.

Anna Kaminski’s work lives at the intersection of photography, installation and performance, merging impact-organization with visual aesthetics to subvert dominant political and cultural narratives. Rather than challenging political norms in a direct way, her work aims to inspire collective self-reflection as well as contribute to the development of new political imaginaries.

Anna Tsouhlarakis works in sculpture, installation, video and performance. She received her B.A. from Dartmouth College and M.F.A. from Yale University. Her work, “Untitled (Silhouettes),” was motivated by the protests of the Dakota Access Pipeline.

Mattias Kraemer’s artistic practice has led him to dynamic onsite collaborations with at-risk communities and organizations all over the world, as an actor, theatre producer, director, filmmaker, musician and writer. A 15-year member of the Living Theatre, Mattias is a tri-lingual Chilean double national whose artistry focuses on collective empowerment and direct action through the millennial power of art and performance.

Grethe Wittrock is one of Denmark´s most talented and internationally renowned fiber artists. Her most recent sculptural installations consist of bird-like constructions made from recycled sails. She works with sustainability issues on a project that involves wood and textiles as media and combines ancient Japanese techniques with modern Nordic design practices.

EVERMAY DIALOGUE In 2016, S&R Foundation concluded the Evermay Dialogue, a series of high-level discussions among global leaders, experts and innovators, focused on terrorist attacks, natural disasters, cyber attacks and humanitarian and military contingencies in Northeast Asia. This collaborative effort was conducted in partnership with the International Institute of Global Resiliency (IIGR) and the Center for a New American Security (CNAS). It was co-chaired by Dr. Sachiko Kuno, co-founder, president and CEO of S&R Foundation, and the honorable Michèle Flournoy, co-founder and CEO of CNAS. The series culminated with the production of a report available on CNAS’s website titled, “Strategic Resilience: A U.S.-Japan Alliance Action Plan for All-Hazard Emergency Management.”

2016 HIGHLIGHT On April 12, 2016, Evermay Dialogue held a successful event around the release of the report featuring keynote speaker Yuriko Koike, former Minister of Defense and current governor of Tokyo.

HALCYON DIALOGUE S&R partnered with the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) on the 2016– 2017 Halcyon Dialogue program to coincide with the launch of AAAS’s new journal, Science Robotics.

The Dialogue, formerly known as the Evermay Dialogue, is a series of high-level discussions among global leaders, experts and innovators which will focus on the topic of robots and their broad implications for global society. The ongoing discussions will involve policy makers and innovators from industry and academia. They will examine the technical achievements of the evolving field of robotics; explore how the field is, or may be, affected by public opinion and policy; and examine the broader social implications raised by integrating robots into the everyday lives of people. Actionable reports and recommendations for future research and policy will be produced for wide dissemination at the culmination of the sessions.

2016 HIGHLIGHT The first session was held on October 27, 2016 on the topic of, “Military Robotics Used in a Civilian Setting.”

KINGFISHER

GLOBAL LEADERSHIP PROGRAM The Kingfisher Global Leadership Program (KGLP), a two-week study abroad program for Japanese undergraduate and graduate students, is designed to empower the next generation of leaders with the skills and networks they need to thrive in an increasingly globalized society.

Through a rich series of lectures by experts in their respective fields, this multi-disciplinary, cross-cultural experience provides participants with opportunities to gain new perspectives directly from leaders at such prominent Washington, D.C.-area organizations as the World Bank, U.S. Department of State, NASA, NIST and NIH. S&R held two Kingfisher programs in 2016 with our partner universities in Japan:

2016 HIGHLIGHT The United States-Japan Foundation (USJF) awarded S&R Foundation a $100,000 grant to operate the Kingfisher Global Leadership Program. USJF supports programs like KGLP that foster mutual knowledge and education, deepening understanding between the U.S. and Japan in an increasingly interdependent world.

AWARDS UENO AWARD In 2002, S&R Foundation established the Ryuji Ueno Award (known as the “Ueno Award”) in collaboration with the American Physiological Society (APS). From 2013, it has been presented annually to an early career investigator demonstrating outstanding promise based on their research in wound healing, tissue remodeling and/or organ regeneration. From 2002 to 2012, this award was given to individuals showing outstanding promise based on their research in ion channels or epithelial barrier function.

The 2016 award was presented to Li “Alex” Zuo, Ph.D., a fellow of American College of Sports Medicine, a tenure track assistant professor at Ohio State University and director of the Molecular Physiology and Rehabilitation Research Lab, for his research in developing oxygen treatments for respiratory muscle dysfunction in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). COPD ranks third among leading causes of death in the United States according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and there is currently no cure. Dr. Zuo’s research goal is to develop innovative protocols and novel treatments for COPD to improve the quality of life for patients.

WASHINGTON AWARD The S&R Washington Award recognizes talented emerging artists in all disciplines. It is especially intended for artists of great ability and potential who are looking towards the next stages in their creative development. The Washington Award is the longest running S&R award, supporting over 50 global artists for over 15 years.

In 2016, S&R awarded five outstanding artists: grand prize winner, Composer Saad Haddad and awardees Maggie Finnegan (soprano), Gilad Hochman (composer), Karen Ouzounian (cello) and Seeta Patel (dance). Each is a forward-thinking artist pushing the boundaries of their practice.

Saad Haddad (b. 1992) is a composer of orchestral, chamber, vocal and electroacoustic music who achieves a, “remarkable fusion of idioms,” (New York Times), most notably as he explores the disparate qualities inherent in Western art music and Middle Eastern musical tradition. His music delves into that relationship by transferring the performance techniques of traditional Arabic instruments to Western symphonic instruments, while extending their capabilities through technological advancements.

OVERTURES

SPRING CONCERT SERIES S&R Foundation continued the vibrant Overtures Concert Series in spring of 2016 with 10 performances at Evermay and Halcyon House.

The series included performances by internationally renowned musicians from the Spoleto Festival USA, rising-star Composer Mason Bates, and talented singers from Wolf Trap Opera’s Filene Young Artist Program. In the summer of 2016, the Concert Series transitioned to the Ryuji Ueno Foundation, which continues to host concerts at Evermay.

EVERMAY CHAMBER The celebrated musicians of Evermay Chamber assembled for a summer festival of performances at Halcyon House and the Music Center at Strathmore, led by Artistic Director and S&R Washington Award Grand Prize winner and violinist, Tamaki Kawakubo. In a debut collaboration with student musicians from the Maryland Classic Youth Orchestras of Strathmore, Evermay Chamber showed its international soloist caliber in a performance of Beethoven’s Triple Concerto.

The ensemble returned to perform at Halcyon House for a performance of Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 12 and Schumann’s Piano Quintet in E-Flat Major, Op. 44. Pianists Yu Kosuge and Ryo Yanagitani took the stage with the award-winning string players of Evermay Chamber, performing to a sold-out house.

ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE 2016 saw the conclusion of Ryo Yanagatani’s and Machiko Ozawa’s participation in the Artist-in-Residence program. As in previous years, they participated in community workshops and were representatives of S&R Foundation at various performances. Both took part in the Overtures Concert Series and gave a number of other performances of various sizes, totaling 31 performances as representatives of S&R Foundation.

Following their historic Swan Lake partnership in 2015, S&R Foundation and the Washington Ballet teamed to present a pair of cutting-edge productions at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in 2016. In February, S&R Foundation Artist-inResidence Ryo Yanakatani performed J.S. Bach’s landmark score, “The Goldberg Variations,” accompanying choreographer (and now-Halcyon Artistic Director) Septime Webre’s ballet, “State of Wonder.” In May, Artist-in-Residence Machiko Ozawa collaborated with Choreographer Edwaard Liang and Composer Gabriel Gaffney Smith to bring to life the ambitious, “Bowie & Queen,” project that celebrated the music of two influential rockers, David Bowie and Freddie Mercury. These performances were attended by approximately 14 thousand people, and through their fusion of classical principles and contemporary sensibilities, these projects served to push the boundaries of musical and dance expression.

2016 FINANCIALS S&R Foundation continues to advance its strategic plan, and in 2016 has made notable progress in inspiring innovation and empowering excellence. 100 percent of donor contributions support S&R Foundation programs. Overhead and general operating expenses are covered by founders’ contributions and current foundation assets. The operating budget deficit noted was due to the purchase, operation and renovation of the Fillmore School, not originally included in the 2016 forecasted budget. The difference was covered by existing assets.

LOOKING AHEAD 2016 WAS A YEAR OF INCUBATION. IN 2017 SOMETHING NEW EMERGES. As my colleague and good friend Dr. Sachiko Kuno shared with you, S&R Foundation has evolved since its inception and original intention. The accomplishments of the Halcyon Incubator since its launch in fall 2014 have led us to develop a unique methodology for supporting emerging talent. The success of the pilot Studios Program in 2016 showed us that we can apply that methodology to other forms of creativity.

Internally, 2016 was dedicated to the creation of a comprehensive strategic plan, led by Chris Denby, with the help of our steadfast Honorary Board and other stakeholders. By the end of the process, we had asked ourselves many tough questions, created new frameworks and goals, and were clearly facing a new direction. As a result, the mission of S&R to support talented individuals in the arts, sciences and social entrepreneurship, especially those who are furthering international cultural collaboration, gave way to a new mission: to catalyze emerging creatives striving for a better world. Thus Dr. Sachiko Kuno and I decided to co-found a new organization, Halcyon, which will move forward as the embodiment of the new mission.

The birth of Halcyon does not mean the end of S&R. On the contrary, S&R is returning to its origin and core; it continues to grow in support of the mission it began 16 years ago.

Halcyon means haven and optimism, and we will focus on galvanizing and catalyzing creativity in all forms and building on the great community of S&R to grow a diverse network where creativity thrives and achieves profound impact. Our main programs are: • The Halcyon Incubator fellowship continues to equip early-stage social entrepreneurs with the support they need to transform audacious ideas into scalable and sustainable ventures, and change the world.

• Building on what we learned from the pilot Studios Program, the Halcyon Arts Lab fellowship will support emerging artists with bold ideas of how art and creativity can be forces for civic engagement and social impact.

• Led by Septime Webre, Halcyon Stage invites viewers to experience a fusion of innovative performances, transformative conversations, and experiences that push past traditional boundaries and limitations.

• Halcyon Dialogue continues its 2016–2017 series of high-level discussions among leaders, experts, policymakers and innovators focusing on the evolving field of robotics and its far-reaching global implications.

• Halcyon Awards Gala will recognize Halcyon Awards winners – icons in art, innovators in policy – and present a lifetime achievement award for social entrepreneurship.
