4.2 Urban theories in relation to farming

It was almost as early as 1893 when people dwelling at recession struck Detroit were asked by their mayor – Hazen S. Pingree, to cultivate the plots that they own, which had been left vacant for a long time. These cultivated plots within the city came to be called as ‗Hazen‘s potato patches‘. He came up with the idea with the intention of using these vacant plots to produce income, promote food production for the needy, and bring people together on a common cause- to boost their spirit of independence during times of hardship.
