Here’s What People Couldn’t Stop Talking About on Tonight’s Mad Men

This week’s episode was all about Peggy and Stan according to Twitter

Sunday’s episode of Mad Men turned nearly every character’s future into one big question mark with the news that McCannErickson would be absorbing SC&P — and that not everybody would be coming along for the ride. But forget about the boardroom scheming and office gossip. For plenty of viewers, “Time & Life” — the 11th episode of the final season — was all about love: specifically, the love between Peggy and Stan that hasn’t exactly blossomed despite fans’ frantic Twitter pleas. If you found yourself shipping SC&P’s lumbersexual art director and its finicky copy chief, clearly you weren’t alone tonight:

4 reasons to fall in love with classic red lipstick all over again: It may be the most classic of lip colors, but for all its timeless appeal, a pop of red pigment lends itself to a spectrum of decidedly modern reinterpretations. Karlie Kloss’s creamy scarlet shade in New York City last night felt fresh thanks to her supernatural glow, while Emma Watson masterfully balanced edgy and elegant by pairing a matte mouth with scraped-back waves that revealed a punkish constellation of earrings. With the help of a wash of copper shadow and plenty of mascara, Lindsey Wixson’s liquid lip played to the seventies glamour of her suede jacket and Diane Kruger updated the Parisian elegance of monochromatic stripes with a soft-shine stain. Here are four reasons to fall in love with an old favorite all over again.

Sea of Sharks, Stingray, Jellyfish Flaw in iPhone, iPad Apps Could Allow Hackers to Steal Data

A flaw in as many as 1,500 iPhone and iPad apps from companies including Alibaba and Citrix could allow hackers to steal passwords or payment-card data, according to research released this week. The apps are vulnerable because they rely on flawed pieces of code for implementing encryption. The code, part of a library called AFNetworking, has since been patched, but some apps haven’t updated their software, according to the researchers. On Monday, SourceDNA published research suggesting some 1,500 apps were still vulnerable. The apps that SourceDNA said are vulnerable include the Alibaba.com BABA -3.54% app and a Citrix audioconference app. Neither company responded to a request for comment Wednesday. Encryption is hard and making apps is supposed to be easy. So companies often use free code “libraries” to implement encryption in apps that help users bring work home or find the best place to go out. The flaw, discovered in March, shows the risks with this set-up.

Barclays Needs More Work to Start Cruising

A Day in the Life of Melinda Gates The global philanthropist combines compassion with a belief in data-driven solutions EVEN THE TIGHTLY choreographed pace of a day in the life of Melinda Gates hits a snag once in a while. At the debut of a short biographical film about her, part of the Makers series, at AOL’s New York offices this spring, the video began to stutter shortly after starting. For a minute, the crowd sat in awkward silence while garbled audio loudly echoed through the room. After brief deliberations, and as technicians scrambled to fix the problem, Gates calmly strode to the front, where she cut straight to a live Q&A with the video’s director that had been planned for after the screening. “I worked in software,” she said into her microphone with a smile as she settled in a chair. “I’m used to glitches every now and then.”Gates has proved so adept at playing her role on the world stage as one of its most powerful philanthropists that it’s easy to forget: Achieving global prominence wasn’t initially part of her plan. A math and science geek raised in a middle-class family in Dallas, she graduated at the top of her high school class and went on to study computer science and economics at Duke University.

Chester See: From YouTube to Broadway WSJD: What would be the worst thing about being signed to a record label? See: A lot of us learned, as YouTube musicians, is how to do what we love and not report to anyone. Why would I give that up? It’s just a different way to reach an audience. The songs are getting heard. ‘God Made Me Beautiful’ was getting played in Australian radio for a couple years. That’s not even out of the question. I know the radio is controlled, and companies can buy their way into the top 40s. They can help in that scenario. Is that even worth it? WSJD: Do you film and edit all of your videos? See: That’s the evolution of a YouTuber. There wasn’t a scenario unless you already had a lot of money where you would justify outsourcing the work to someone else. There was no guarantee that it would make sense in the future. Anyone that started out in the earlier years and didn’t just accelerate into making money had to know how to do everything. You have to record your stuff, edit, understand the YouTube platform and how to be strategic. That was one of the things that define someone who started out on YouTube.

The U.K. bank showed better underlying results in parts of its core operations. But those parts of its business are still struggling to escape the drag of the past. Barclays Hit by Extra Foreign-Exchange Provision Barclays Earnings: The Takeaways Litigation provisions continue Barclays has continued to stockpile against incoming fines. Over the first quester, it added £800 million to its provision against fines related to foreign exchange rate manipulation, and a further £150 million for reimbursing payment protection insurance. That means the total set aside for investigations and litigation, primarily related to foreign exchange benchmarks, hit £2.05 billion, more than four times as much as net first quarter profit.

Microsoft Awarded Patent for Emotion Detecting Eyeglasses

Google Glass may be stumbling, but Microsoft MSFT -0.15% appears to be taking a fresh look at the idea of smart glasses. Microsoft cinched a U.S. patent for Internet-connected, see-through glasses. But here’s the twist: They would be able to detect and interpret the emotions of people within their field of vision. The patent for “a wearable emotion detection feedback system,” was filed in October 2012, and awarded earlier this week, according to a public filing by the U.S. patent office. It’s unclear whether Microsoft is serious about any near-term commercial applications, or is just tinkering. A spokeswoman said, “Microsoft regularly applies for and receives patents as part of its business practice; not all patents applied for or received will be incorporated into a Microsoft product.” According to the filing, a wearer can determine who to analyze, whether an individual or a group, without their knowing. The filing doesn’t specify uses, but some obvious ones could include interrogations and questioning at borders, where the device’s sensors can measure changes in a person’s body temperature, or can pick up very subtle shifts in voice quality. Boardroom negotiations and employee hiring are also possibilities. While so-called “emotional analytics” is a burgeoning field, with tech firms and governments making use of powerful new data processing abilities, rights activists have raised privacy concerns. Here’s how the Microsoft gadget is meant to work, according to the filing: Sensors, including depth cameras and a microphone mounted on the nose bridge, pick up visual and audio information from a subject. That’s processed for things like subtle variations in speech rhythm and amplitude, choice of words, type and speed of gestures, eye focus and body posture. All that’s beamed to Microsoft’s databases, and an emotional determination is then relayed back to the wearer through the glasses. Microsoft’s ambitions are for the device to be able to decode subtle hints based on context. “For example, if a subject plays with her hair in a social situation, such as a date, this behavior may indicate friendliness or interest,” according to the patent filing. “However, the same behavior in a business situation may indicate boredom.” In some embodiments of the patent, devices can communicate with each other, so users wearing the glasses can share data in real time. This can also give wearers a 360-degree view, and can be useful in gaming or security work. 09:07 09:07 09:07 09:07 09:08 09:08 09:08 09:08 09:10 09:10 09:13 09:13 09:13 09:21 09:21 09:21 09:21 09:21 09:21 09:36 09:36 09:36 09:36 09:36 09:37 09:37 09:40

Jay Z Plots Rarities Concert in New York City for Tidal Jay Z‘s next wave of Tidal promotion? Dipping into his back catalog. The rapper announced today plans for a free concert in New York City on May 13 for subscribers to his streaming music service, where he promises to play songs from his back catalog that he hasn’t performed in over ten years, or in some cases – never. he Associated Press reports that the only way fans can get tickets to “Tidal X: Jay Z B-Sides” is by creating and submitting a playlist on Tidal. For those not in New York or just lack the skills in making a great playlist that will pique Jay Z’s interest, Tidal plans to stream the show. The move is the latest high-profile live gig the service has offered up; this past Sunday, it streamed Jack White‘s acoustic show from Fargo, North Dakota. After launching Tidal in March, the service has struggled with its rollout, with some artists criticizing it for being too elitist and not offering a better platform for up-and-coming musicians. Kanye West, Madonna, Nicki Minaj, Rihanna, Deadmau5, and Usher are all part owners in the service. Jay Z took to Twitter on Sunday, defending the service, saying that they have 770,000 subscribers already and that they’re “in it for the long haul.”

Hi Julie. Thank you very much for your time this morning. I have been discussing with my team and , although I really love how you work, we think it is too expensive for us. The maximum amount we can spend is 500 pounds. Thank you very very much but we can´t afford 2.000. Love Hi Milly! Its a pity that the budget is a problem. But no worries, if you ever need any help with anything, let me know! It is a really wonderful initiative and I wish you all the very best! I hope lots of people can view your club as a great learning platform. Love, Julie

The 10 Best Beauty Looks: Week of April 27, 2015

The week’s best beauty looks showed off the power of a single standout feature. Drew Barrymore offered her soft nude makeup a focal point with a stroke of kohl, while Julianne Moore dressed up an LBD with a sleek topknot, and Karlie Kloss elevated a simple jeans-and-tee pairing with classic scarlet lipstick. Even smoky eye devotee Rose Byrne was in the mood for a color change, brightening her staple look with a rimming of rose gold shadow—and leaving us to appreciate all over again what a difference one detail can make.
