Sri Ramakrishna Math Charitable Dispensary & Diagnostic Centre, Sri Ramakrishna Math, Chennai: A Brief Report
The Math started its Charitable Dispensary in 1925 to render service to the poor and helpless patients in and around the locality. The devoted and self-sacrificing services of other eminent doctors as well as lay devotees have enabled this Dispensary to grow into a very useful center of medical relief and diagnostic center in the heart of Chennai. During its 1st year the number of patients treated was only 970, whereas in the year 2018 the number was more than 3.5 lakhs (Including Rural medical) A monastic member looks after the day to day administration of the Dispensary.
With the help of about 40
Doctors, 30 Volunteers and 19 staff, Their Self-sacrificing service is helping its smooth function. On an average, 800 patients per day avail the medical facilities here. Most of the medicines are given free of cost. Stock mixtures, tablets, lotions, ointments, syrups etc. come under this category. However, costly medicines like tonics, antibiotics, drugs, multivitamin drops for children injections etc are given at a very nominal charge.
52
The Dispensary has following departments: General, Eye, ENT, Dental, Paediatrics, Dialectology, Gynecology, Pulmonology, Thyroid, Orthopaedic, Homeopathy, Cardiology, Physiotherapy, etc. Investigations are done at a nominal cost including Blood tests, Ultrasound Scan, Digital X-ray, ECG, Endoscopy, Colonoscopy, etc. Our service to LAP
(Leprosy Afflicted People) covers
Chengalpattu and Tambaram Areas. (LAPs) and their children for the past 29 years. The Math has been working to integrate LAPs with the mainstream of society to lead a dignified life. Beside this, our rural Medical camps take care of large segment of Tiruvallur Dist. The Rural Medical Camps conducted by the Dispensary with the Doctors Volunteers and well-wishers have been a great boon to the backward villages in and around Theeyambakkam and Meyyur for the past 33 years free treatment. Math medical services play a major role in addressing many issues arising out of Health problems which include awareness creation, early screening of patients, house to house Active Case Detection campaign, treatment and referral to Specialized Hospitals when required. Our Doctors, and volunteers also serving the Blind Home inmates at Chennai.

A Report on Leprosy Afflicted Persons New Life Welfare Scheme LAPs Welfare and Rehabilitation Scheme was started 31 years ago by Revered Swami Tapasyananda Maharaj with Rs.300 extending the help initially for 3 LAPs in a humble way. Subsequently, this Welfare and Rehabilitation Scheme has blossomed into a permanent Scheme with the blessings of Revered Swami Smaranananda Maharaj and Revered Swami Gautamanandaji Maharaj. Most Rev. Srimat Swami Gautamanandaji Maharaj blessed this Welfare scheme to be a forerunner and a Model Scheme for other NGOs. Hon’ Ex. Governer of Tamilnadu Sri Rammohan Rao gave Gandhian Award sponsored by Indian Leprosy Afflicted Persons Welfare Foundation and praised the efforts of our Math. Welfare Measures carried out so far: 1. Sri Ramakrishna Math identified 1300 LAPs. In Chennai and extended various welfare measures at a reasonably cheap cost and prevented them from becoming street beggers. Suitable housing for the needy LAPs. upto 10 houses was arranged at Chennai through Tamil Nadu Housing Board for Low Income Group. 2. Special Self Help Group: Once in a Month on second Saturdays, 8.30 am to 4.00 pm these Self Help Groups meet at Math’s campus. 10 Groups from Chennai, one each at Chengalput and Kancheepuram have been in existence during the last nine years. 3. There are totally 120 Members in the SHG. Separate Bank Accounts for each Group have been opened at Indian Bank. These
54
SHGs. have been very helpful in resolving many of their problems by mutual discussions. 4. Medical Research for LAPs. As there is no proper knowledge with regard to initial affliction of leprosy and also due to age old beliefs, when delayed treatment is given, nerves lose their sensitivity resulting in severe ulsers and loss of important parts of the body. Therefore, in such cases Alopathy and Homeopathy treatments are given to them. Every year, depending upon the condition individual LAPs, annual tournaments of different simple sport competitions are being conducted by the Math. About 1500 LAPs have been getting their Government Pension with the effort and help of the Math. Government Certificates for Handicapped persons, Pensions, Free transport Pass in Government Buses, Artificial Parts for handicapped, free spectacles, free medicines etc arranged by the Math. Shri V.K. Subburaj, Former Health Secretary of Tamilnadu, extended his help to the kith and kin of LAPs to undergo Nurse Training and also secure jobs in Government hospitals. Every Saturday between 1 and 4 p.m. Medical help given to LAPs at Math campus. Sri Ramakrishna Math Medical and Rural Welfare Centre, Meyyur, Thiruvallur (BPCL SUPPORTED) A Brief Report To realize the dream of Swami Vivekananda to uplift the people in the villages, Sri Ramakrishna Math, Chennai has been undertaking rural medical service for the past 33 years. As a part of this service, a team of doctors and volunteers visit remote villages to provide basic medical care three days in a week. As part of Swami Vivekananda’s 150th Birthday Celebration, Meyyur Village, 50 kms from Chennai, was adopted by Sri Ramakrishna Math, Chennai. Two small nearby hamlets Gurupuram and Vembedu were also included to benefit by these services. These people in the hamlets are away from the main stream of the society and are very poor with limited job opportunities and mostly illiterate. Under these circumstances, Chennai Math adopted Meyyur Village along with the two neighboring hamlets for the purpose of uplifting them into a model village.

Scientific experiments and Telecopic views are also given by well educated Scholars and I.I.T. Vivekananda Circle students. During the month of May one month Summer Camp is conducted every year and many Swamijis from different centres of our Math take part and bless the rural children. Specifically this year Belur Math Vice President Most Rev. Swami Gautamanandaji Maharaj blessed the children through video conference. At the end of summer camps with the minium rural set-up the children showed their talents through the cultural programmes including Drama in English depicting Swamiji's life , Traditional programmes like Villu Pattu, Recitation of Gita and other Stotras. Basic Computer training and Spoken English classes are given to students and women. Last year the Math provided a photocopy machine for the benefit of the villagers (the nearest Xerox centre is 15 KM away) The local temples in Gurupuram and Vembedu have been renovated by the Chennai Math and regular pooja is being conducted. This has revived the faith of the local people in traditional worship. The Math is now providing educational help to around 81 students. Among them, 25 are tribal children ST, SC-16, MBC-5 and BC-35. Academic classes, Bhajans and personality development classes are conducted for tribal students three days a week. Due to lack of transportation, most children in Vembedu and Gurupuram could not attend school. The Math has co-ordinated with the local school and has arranged transport for these children to go to school. Bicycles were distributed to school childern to help them to commute to school. Personality development is possible only on the foundation of a strong and good character which, in turn, helps one to lead a moral life. The impact of the service done by Sri Ramakrishna Math can be seen through 'a positive change' in the life of Meyyur Saradamma Balamandir students and Vembedu tribal students. SARADAMMA GRAMA MANGALAM - WOMEN EMPOWERMENT PROGRAMME In November 2014, a rural tailoring unit was started as “Saradamma Grama Mangalam. This is run exclusively for the local women who are very poor, and in the past three years about 120 rural women have been trained in tailoring skills. They have also taken orders for stitching school uniforms etc... This has provided them financial assistance and also increased their self-confidence. This has helped them to educate their children too. Tailoring machines have been procured with donations from the Math and distributed to the qualified women of this group. About 40 machines have been distributed. Bicycles were distributed to tailoring women to help them to commute to tailoring classes. The elderly women in the group were trained to make Agarbathi and Sambarani. This has become a small scale industry as there is steady production and regular sales of these products. This has also been a source of income to these people. 60 women have been benefited by this. Twice a year our Math is providing new clothes to around 300 widows in and around Meyyur. Daily about 100 students and 20 elders are attending evening Arati and Khandana bhajan regularly. Every year Sri Ramakrishna, Sri Sri Maa, Swamiji, Sashi Maharaj Jayanthi, Navaratri etc. are celebrated with devotion. Many villagers from Meyyur attend the main functions at Mylapore Math regularly and among them 33 are Initiated devotees.

The Math is striving hard to empower the women as envisaged by Swami Vivekananda by helping them to acquire skills to become self-sufficient. RURAL WELFARE CENTRE-(BPCL- Supported) In view of the growing activities of he medical camp and other rural services, a communitiy centre was built with the help of BPCL (which is supporting our entire Medical and Rural Service) and with the co-operation of the local Panchayat. This building was inaugurated on 11th September 2016 by Most Rev. Srimat Swami Gautamanandaji Maharaj in presence of Sri S. Varadarajan, Chairman BPCL. All the above mentioned activities are being carried out in the newly inaugurated building. In the words of Swamiji, “Let each one of us pray day and night for the down-trodden millions in India, who are held fast by poverty, priest-craft and tyranny. I love the poor…….They cannot find light or education, who will bring the light to them? who will travel from door to door bringing education to them? Let these be your God - think of them, work for them, pray for them incessantly-the Lord will show you the way. Let us unite our wills in continued prayer for their good. We may die unknown, unpitied, without accomplishing anything; but not one thought will be lost. It will take effect sooner or later. So long as the millions live in hunger and ignorance, I hold every man a traitor for having been educated at their expense, pays not the least heed to them.” In a humble way the service is going on, but still more needs to be done. We hope with the help of more compassionate hearts and helping hands we shall carry out Swamiji’s work. With the blessings of the Holy Trio, Meyyur will soon be a ‘model village’.
