Home remains the most significant architectural place we experience throughout our lives. It represents personality, togetherness, privacy, stability and inspiration. As we continue to investigate the roles that homes play in our daily lives, the annual SRQ Magazine Home of the Year Competition invites local architects, builders, interior designers and landscape artists to present us with new notions of home environments by submitting their recent residential projects. Year after year, the competition redefines the spaces where we live and thrive—broadening the discussion of what a home represents and what it can ultimately be with today’s building strategies, renovation techniques and regional trends. From seaside to streetside, inside and out, these award-winning domains celebrate and contribute to a growing legacy of innovative home design. PRODUCED BY SRQ MAGAZINE AND OUR NATIONAL JUDGES

The “SRQ” in SRQ magazine originates from the designated call letters for the local Sarasota Bradenton International Airport. “SR” was the original abbreviation for the airport before the growth in total number of airports required the use of a three-letter code. Letters like “X” and “Q” were used as filler, thus the original “SR” was revised to “SRQ,” much as the Los Angeles airport became “LAX.” As a regional publication committed to the residents of and visitors to both Sarasota and Manatee counties, SRQ captures the place that we call home.

ALWAYS LOOKING UP

From an early age, Scott Wilson was fascinated by high-rise architecture. Now, he brings decades of expertise in largescale urban design to MHK Architecture in Sarasota where he oversees the commercial division. “Growing up, I would visit my grandparents every year near Chicago and I was completely enamored by the high rise buildings and remarkable architecture throughout the city,” says Scott Wilson. “My eyes were always looking up and I absolutely loved it.”

Wilson is a senior architect in the Sarasota office of MHK Architecture, a boutique architecture firm specializing in luxury residential homes and human-centered commercial spaces. Wilson, who recently relocated to Sarasota from the firm’s Naples office, has always had a particular affinity toward the commercial side of architecture.

“I believe there are two types of clients: those that prioritize design and those that prioritize financial returns. I have always gravitated toward the financial side because return on investment (ROI) just makes sense to me,” Wilson says. “Design is very subjective, but ROI is the market putting value to your design. Different architecture firms have their own particular style and that is why clients go to those firms, but to me, commercial projects command the highest possible returns telling you when the design was done right. Whereas custom single family homes are for the individual, commercial work is built to be experienced by the market.”

Wilson’s architecture career began up north. After attending Hobart College in the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York for his undergraduate degree, he moved to New York City. There, he earned his master’s at NYU while working at the architecture firms Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates (KPF) and Gensler, ultimately becoming a licensed and registered architect in the state of New York. After twenty years of living and practicing in New York City, Wilson and his wife decided to pursue a more laid-back lifestyle and moved their family to Naples, Florida.

“When I was in New York I worked for two of the top firms in the world, and it was a great learning experience to cut my teeth in the commercial world. But it’s very much working at a global level,” Wilson recalls. “Coming to Florida, I thought I’d work at a small architecture shop doing one project here, another project there. Ironically, just a few months after our move, COVID hit and we noticed a great migration coming down to Florida right behind us. It was apparent the world wasn’t going to end and the real estate market was booming, so I went on a search to find the best architectural firm in all of Florida. During my search I kept finding myself coming back to Matthew H. Kragh, the Florida architect headquartered in Naples, and I quickly became one of his senior architects. After getting to know the MHK brand, culture and contacts, I was given the opportunity to come run MHK’s commercial division here in Sarasota.”

MHK classifies every project that is not a single family custom home as commercial, so Wilson oversees a diverse portfolio of projects. Since joining the firm, he has done all types of work, including several multi-story condominium buildings, private jet centers, yacht clubs, restaurants, churches, mixed-use complexes, and that barely scratches the surface.

“It has been a fun yet exhausting ride so far,” he says wryly. “I moved to Florida to kick up my heels, but find that I am busier here than when I was living in New York City.”

Still, Wilson wouldn’t have it any other way. He enjoys working closely with developers. He’s thriving in a position where there is endless variety and every project has its own unique challenges to solve. And he’s confident he’s landed at an incredible workplace.

“I have worked at the best firms in the world and to me it all starts from the top. Matthew Kragh is one of the smartest, kindest, funniest, coolest, most-laidback, creative and entrepreneurial leaders I have ever met,” Wilson says. “His mantra is to help everyone at every turn. He is philanthropic, driven and successful. He runs this company because he loves what he does, loves his relationships, loves our clients, loves design and he is very good at it. He is my perfect role model. If I can bring even a fraction of what Matthew does to my clients, success is imminent.” While most of the projects that Wilson designed for MHK are in Naples, he has been very hands-on with commercial projects in the Sarasota area. He shared an insider’s perspective on some projects that are currently in the works.

“I have worked at the best firms in the world and to me it all starts from the top. Matthew Kragh is one of the smartest, kindest, funniest, coolest, most-laidback and entrepreneurial leaders I have ever met.”

THE OWEN

SUNSET BEACH SIESTA KEY

The beaches in Siesta Key are considered some of the best in the world, thanks to their calm, crystal-clear waters and powdery white quartz sand that remains cool to the touch even on the hottest days. Sublime shores like these are deserving of elevated architecture. Sunset Beach is a premier boutique condominium with eleven residences that will offer inhabitants an exclusive beachfront living experience. MHK Architecture has been working with the developer for two years laying all the groundwork that has to happen before ground can be broken—doing zoning and lot studies, getting approvals and entitlements, getting approvals from Sarasota, putting together construction drawings, getting permits. Now, construction is underway and the fun part has begun.“Sunset Beach provides a custom beachfront luxury experience,” says Wilson. “Owners will have panoramic views of Siesta Beach where they can enjoy looking out at the sunsets. There’s a ground floor amenity shared pool that everyone can use and easy access to the beach. Everybody will have their own private parking, and the experience of going from the parking area to the unit is also curated and privatized. And then once you get into the oasis of your own space, you’re living the beach lifestyle.” The spacious open-floor residences at Sunset Beach have been designed to maximize the incredible views of the Gulf of Mexico. Floor-to-ceiling insulated windows with solar tint glass span the perimeter of the living, dining and seating areas and are also featured in the master suites for a resort-like experience. The floor-to-ceiling hurricane-resistant balcony doors open onto oversized terraces with glass balcony railings so there’s nothing standing in the way of the view. Details like chef-inspired kitchens and expansive spa-like master bathrooms put the luxe in luxury.

Golden Gate Point is a picturesque peninsula located just off the mainland in downtown Sarasota. This elite enclave is home to some of Sarasota’s upscale condominiums and boutique developments, and The Owen, a tenstory condominium development comprising 29 luxury residences, will soon be among them. Golden Gate Point underwent a major revitalization project in the early 2000s—the streets have been transformed with brick pavers and modern lighting and lined with lush landscaping, creating an elegant, pedestrian-friendly environment that further enhances the desirability of the location “One of the greatest parts about The Owen is that everything surrounding it is right on the water but the building itself is not. You’re still going to get the beautiful views, but the building is kind of landlocked. In order to compete with the market, we needed to come up with a program that will outshine the other products that are on the waterfront.” The MHK team designed The Owen so that the bottom two floors are dedicated to parking. This means the residential spaces start on the third floor, meaning even the lower-level homes will have views of water and nature and get privacy from the road below. There are four floor plans for prospective residents to choose from, each with semi-private elevator access from the parking garage. The team at MHK Architecture took extensive drone footage of the site so that they could design the building with the views in mind. That meticulous attention to detail also extended to amenities. For example, the rooftop saltwater pool with an infinity edge is south-facing, so the pool and surrounding lounge area gets sun almost all day long.

THE AMARA

Announced just last month, The Amara is one of MHK Architecture’s newest undertakings. This large-scale luxury condominium project consists of two side-by-side buildings, each ten stories in height, with a total of 54 units. “The Amara is right on Sarasota Bay. Not only do you have a view of the water, you also have a view of the city which is really quite cool,” Wilson says. “So you have the city view, you have the water view, you have a view of the boats and the marina. It’s just going to be a beautiful project.” Like The Owen, The Amara will be located on Golden Gate Point and will feature podium parking beneath the residential floors, though it won’t have the same curated parking experience. But among its many amenities (including a shared swimming pool and rooftop viewing areas) The Amara will have one that is fairly uncommon for condominium owners—private marina access with boat slips available for residents. Imagine stepping out of your waterfront condo and strolling down the boardwalk directly to your boat. It doesn’t get much more luxurious than that.

OUR APPROACH

Scale at Speed We’ve been told “Nobody comes out of the gate like MHK.” We take great pride in that because we know how important it is to hit the ground running. The first few weeks of design work on a project can mean the difference between winning or losing. We prefer to win. Boutique Detail We take a boutique approach to all our projects, translating our vast luxury residential experience into elevating our commercial work into truly human-centered design. Not only is this part of the expertise we bring, we believe it helps ensure the long-term success of the projects by creating better spaces for the business and people who use them. Show. Don’t Tell. A good idea isn’t good if it stays in your mind or on the boards. That’s why we’ve always invested time, energy, and resources into creating high-quality renderings early in the process so we can effectively cast a vision and make it obvious to the decision-makers why our designs should be approved and, ultimately, built.

Offices in Sarasota, Naples, Palm Beach, Sanibel Island, Islamorada, Charleston, Denver, Highlands, Greenville

Founded in Naples in 2009, we are now an architecture firm comprised of 9 studios and counting. Our studios are built on local expertise, while sharing the resources, efficiency, and diversity of talent that comes with a larger firm. We think it’s the best of both worlds.

SILVER SCREEN LEGEND

A behind the scenes Q&A with Ringling College Library Association guest speaker Academy Award winning director, producer and screenwriter Ron Howard. Wes Roberts

This

KNOWN FOR ICONIC FILMS LIKE A BEAUTIFUL MIND, APOLLO 13 AND SPLASH, ACADEMY AWARD-WINNING DIRECTOR, PRODUCER AND SCREENWRITER RON HOWARD shared his creative philosophies and career insights with the Sarasota community at the Ringling College Library Association Town Hall Lecture Series this past January. Before taking the stage at the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall for the main event, Howard sat down to take a few questions in a one-on-one interview with SRQ Magazine, offering a more intimate glimpse into the experiences and lessons that have shaped his extraordinary journey in Hollywood.

AS A PRODUCER, YOU HIRE DIRECTORS AND YOU'RE WELL KNOWN AS A DIRECTOR YOURSELF. IS A DIRECTOR SOMEONE WHO HAS AN EXCELLENT INSTINCT FOR WHAT MAKES THE HUMANITY OF AN INDIVIDUAL WORK OR DO YOU THINK IT'S MORE IMPORTANT THAT A DIRECTOR KNOWS WHAT WILL MAKE AN AUDIENCE REACT? RON HOWARD It's both. And I think what you look for in a director–and my partner at Imagine, Brian Grazer, is better at this than I am–he makes his living trying to

put together the right combination of artists and ideas. I think that's what you look for. Technical expertise, experience, these things have value, but these aren't mechanical jobs. They're artistic jobs and they're also about leadership. So, I think what we look for at Imagine is a person who seems to have an innate connection with the material. And then has proven through previous work to also have the talent to be able to get those ideas, whether they're intellectual or emotional (and emotional is usually more important than intellectual)

and, above all, cinematic ideas onto the screen. Then you also try to understand: Are they the type? What kind of leader are they going to be? Are they the type of individual that brings out the best in others? These are traits that I've tried to develop for myself as well as a filmmaker over the years, but it's also what we look for at Imagine.

YOUR COMPANY IMAGINE HAS BEEN AN INCREDIBLE PASSION PROJECT FOR YOU. THE SKILLS THAT HAVE MADE YOU A CELEBRATED DIRECTOR—HOW HAVE THOSE TRANSLATED AND HOW HAVE THEY RELATED TO RUNNING A PRODUCTION COMPANY? Well, the secret sauce behind Imagine all these years has really been this alliance between Brian Grazer and myself. And we do, I think, serve each other well. We're friends, but we're different, and we look for different things. So, I think it's the combined creative energies, curiosity, ambition and taste of the two of us together that created a culture that's Imagine. Now, we have executives, we have longtime collaborators and we've been able to build upon that and broaden it into other areas like branded content and documentaries in recent years. And, of course, we're continuing to do movies and television. But it was all born with a couple of projects that we did together. But even before that, it's who we are as individuals and the fact that there's just good chemistry there and we've been able to build a culture around that.

THE WAY YOU TALK ABOUT COLLABORATING WITH OTHER CREATIVE PEOPLE SEEMS TO BE FILLED WITH POSITIVITY. THE HOLLYWOOD INDUSTRY IS FAMOUS OR INFAMOUS FOR BEING A PLACE WITH A LOT OF NEGATIVE AND OPPORTUNISTIC ENERGY. HOW HAVE YOU HELD ON TO YOUR POSITIVITY AND SUCCEEDED SO WELL IN A WORLD THAT HAS THIS REPUTATION? First of all, I truly love it. I could say the same thing for Brian—we have that in common. We love storytelling. We love the fellow artists who have dedicated their lives to getting stories told in ways that will connect with an audience. But it's also in being pragmatic, not idealistic and understanding of the pressures around this. So there's a duality there. Yeah, it's a huge business. It's driven by the bottom line in a lot of ways—it has to be for those who are investing. Then for those who just want to tell a great story, it's all about that passion. And so, there's an eternal friction. And yet everybody wants the same thing—which is a project which is going to cut through, a project which is going to mean something to people which will endure. So, I think the optimism, in my mind, is that whatever anyone's abject priority might be, it all ultimately serves this idea of telling stories that will resonate with people. And so, if you're just aware of what all the dynamics are, you can be honest about it and open about it. You can understand it without actually becoming cynical, because it's just part of the process— it's part of the process of getting there. SRQ

EVA MACALUSO OFFERS OVER 30 YEARS OF TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE IN MENTAL HEALTH AND COACHING AS A LICENSED CLINICAL MENTAL HEALTH COUNSELOR AND BOARD-CERTIFIED LIFE COACH. At her Sarasota practice and online, she has customized treatment for countless patients to help them focus on evolving their potential, create positive change and lead fulfilling lives. And now, Macaluso has taken her evidence-based approaches one step further with her new book, 4anxiety: An Integrative Holistic Approach, a comprehensive workbook designed to help readers combat anxiety with evidence-based strategies and actionable steps for a freer, more balanced life.

With a graduate degree in Clinical Mental Health

Counseling from Lesley University in Cambridge, MA, Macaluso, a Danbury, Connecticut native, moved from the New England area to Sarasota over 14 years ago and set up private practice on Osprey Avenue where she works with anxiety, depression, behavioral and body image issues while also providing coaching.

Focusing on holistic healing, Macaluso’s book draws on her years of experience. “It's a self-help tool, though it’s most effective when used with a counselor or in a group setting,” she explains. “The workbook is structured to guide readers through the most effective evidence-based strategies, helping them understand their symptoms and providing tools to manage them.”

Throughout the book, readers are logging cognitive symptoms; the ways they think about things, the physiological symptoms–what's happening in their bodies–and then the behavioral symptoms–what

they’re doing when they are anxious, which typically involves escaping, avoiding or over controlling conditions to try to manage the internal world.

“I help people understand the different components as they're working through the book,” says Macaluso. “It's neurobiologically informed which means that there's some information about the physiology of the body and what happens with anxiety and the stress response.” Macaluso’s goal with the book is to help readers uncover their personal anxiety patterns and learn coping strategies that lead to less avoidance and greater engagement with life. As a mother of teenage twins, Macaluso is particularly aware of the challenges facing today’s youth, with anxiety fueled by social media, global events and other pressures. For this reason, she says that 4anxiety would be ideal for both parents and teens looking for practical tools to navigate anxiety together. SRQ

STRINGS OF FRIENDSHIP

The Gulf Coast Banjo Society creates chords of connection. Barbie Heit

THE GULF COAST BANJO SOCIETY (GCBS) BEGAN BACK IN 1988 WITH A SMALL GROUP OF ABOUT 12 MUSICIANS GETTING TOGETHER WEEKLY TO PLAY THEIR BANJOS AND BUILD CONNECTIONS. Today, the group has nearly quadrupled to include around 58 members playing various instruments, still with the same mission of sharing music and friendship. Fans can find them entertaining the crowds at the historic Florida fish camp restaurant, Snook Haven in Venice, every Thursday from 11am to 1:30pm from October through May. Music Director Paul Jacques has been playing the bass guitar and leading the band for over 31 years. “We’ve grown a lot over the years and we now have more instruments playing with us than ever before. However, we still play the same music we always did from the ‘20s all the way up to maybe the ‘70s and ‘80s and we still have the same big crowds that come to see us at Snook Haven,” says Jacques. “I look around at the crowds and I see we're entertaining them, they're having fun and we're having a ball, so we just try to keep a good thing going!” While everyone in the group is now considered a musician, they did not necessarily start off that way. Jacques explains that some members have joined the group because they were interested in learning and meeting new people. “Just like anything else, if you really want to do it and you're really having a good time, you'll buy some music books and you’ll work it out in time. Maybe you won’t play every song in the beginning and that’s okay. We have enough experienced players in the group to carry the whole thing until the new players get up to speed.”

Over the years, the group has grown in popularity. In fact, their Facebook page now boasts over 1,500 followers. “I think the reason we have so many people that come out to see us is because they see the friendship, the love and the fun that we have amongst each other while we're playing, and they kind of feel like they're part of a family with us,” shares Jacques. “I usually get there an hour and a half or so earlier just to go meet the people, chat a little and get set up. I really love it.”

Betty Comora is an experienced professional musician who also happens to be Paul’s significant other. She can often be found playing the washboard with the group. She shares how the Gulf Coast Banjo Society brought the happy couple together over six years ago. “I was in the group for a few years, but I had never spoken to Paul because I didn't come every week at that time—I was only coming every once in a while. After my husband passed away, I started coming more often. One day, I got a phone call from Paul asking me out

to dinner and the rest is history. I think it was fate and music that brought us together.” While all of the band’s members are volunteers, they do get a complimentary meal at Snook Haven after every performance. And although there is no charge for the show, the group passes around a hat for donations which are used to buy uniforms and equipment. All leftover money is then donated to nonprofit organizations that help lowincome kids learn music and provide scholarships for high school students that are planning to study music in college. The musicians are also big supporters of veteran groups. Jacques proudly reports that last year they gave $2,000 to the Honor Flight, an organization that celebrates America’s veterans by inviting them to share in a day of honor at our nation’s memorials.

“A lot of us are veterans, so we start off our shows with the Star Spangled Banner and we ask anybody that can stand to please stand,” he shares. “Of course we always end with a patriotic song, too.” SRQ

DANCING INTO THE SPOTLIGHT

Choreographer Toni Dentico creates the moves for the next generation at Rise Above Performing Arts. Barbie Heit

AFTER FALLING IN LOVE WITH SARASOTA DURING A VACATION YEARS AGO, RISE ABOVE’S CHOREOGRAPHER TONI DENTICO DECIDED TO RELOCATE FROM THE FRIGID WINTERS OF BUFFALO, NY TO THE ENDLESS SUMMERS OF OUR REGION IN 2022. “We just loved the proximity to the beaches, the arts and culture of the area and the family-friendly atmosphere, so we thought it would be the perfect place to plant our roots for retirement,” she explains. Retirement, however, was not in the immediate future for the lifelong dancer.

Despite dancing since the age of four, Dentico pursued a career in accounting, following her mother’s advice to choose a job with a steady paycheck. It wasn’t until 2003, when her oldest son decided to attend acting school, that she rediscovered her passion for choreography, creating dance routines for the musicals at his school. She later learned about a school in the Buffalo area, St. Joseph’s Collegiate, that had an amazing music program and she thought, “If I could ever teach or choreograph anywhere, that would be where I’d want to go." So when the vocal director of St. Joseph’s invited her to teach a workshop there she knew that was potentially going to be her big break. She went on to be the school’s choreographer for the next 12 years. “They put on bigger productions than any high school musical you've ever seen,” she recalls. “Their budget was huge, the scenery and the costumes were just so elaborate, it felt like being on a New York City stage. It was just intense and all the vocal directors were wonderful so it was very hard for me to leave.” When she did decide to leave, she came to Sarasota thinking she was closing the door on her choreography career forever, but as the saying goes, when one door closes, another opens and that is exactly what happened for Dentico.

Through a neighbor, Dentico learned about Rise Above Performing Arts, a non-profit organization that focuses on increasing accessibility for any child to be involved in the performing arts—often at no cost to their families. Over 200 children, teens and young adults receive services annually with the organization and have opportunities to participate in theatrical productions, summer camp and their award-winning show choir. She interviewed, got the job and has been the choreographer there since 2022. “At Rise Above we do six shows a year and that’s actually more work than I've ever done in the past,” says Dentico. “Jacob Ruscoe, our artistic director, always wants to do shows that he's never done before, which are usually shows I haven't done before, so I’m really excited to be part of these productions.” Dentico’s husband Mike often says she works too hard but to her, it doesn’t feel that way. “The teaching process, teamwork and finished product never get old to me. It blows my mind every time,” she says. “It’s just such a feeling of completion and I’m so proud of these extremely talented kids. All the staff members work really well together too, which is not very common in the art world. It's just a great experience all around.”

While Dentico focuses on work with middle and high school students, Rise Above’s programs span from kindergarten through college. The most recent musical production, Grease, ran in January and was a huge success, followed by the company’s first drama performance, The Diary of Anne Frank. The upcoming musical production of The Wizard of Oz will run May 8-10 and 15-18. “Sometimes the experience of getting there with a show can seem rough, but always the end result feels like such an accomplishment for me and for the kids,” Dentico says. “That's what keeps me going and makes it so hard to ever think about giving up. I'm probably going to be out there dancing with a cane pretty soon, but I'll be out there!” SRQ

ORCHESTRAL ESCAPE

Find a little respite with the light and lively A Musical Comedy from the Sarasota Orchestra. Kate Wight

culture city

“The Great Escapes are structured to have many more pieces than a typical program,” says Marcelina Suchocka, the principal percussionist for the Sarasota Orchestra. “The pieces are shorter and it’s kind of a mishmash of a segment of a serious symphony to a lighthearted Anderson work to segments of movie scores. The programs are usually small digestible pieces for everyone to enjoy.”

Suchocka is referring here to Leroy Anderson, who was an American composer of short, light concert pieces. A Musical Comedy will feature one of Anderson’s most popular and enduring compositions “The Typewriter” a whimsical piece of orchestral music that humorously mimics the sounds of an actual typewriter. The composition incorporates a real typewriter as a percussion instrument, integrating the sounds of its bells, keys and carriage return into the melody. While the piece is charming, it also requires great technical skill from the typist and requires a particular degree of wrist flexibility. As the principal percussionist, Suchocka will be manning the keys on the typewriter for this show. “A typewriter isn’t something that an orchestra usually owns, so you have to go out and source it from a friend or thrift store. There was a little bit of hunting that went on,” Suchocka says. “Then you have to put it to the test to make sure the keys don’t stick, because that would be bad, and you need to test

MODERN LIFE SEEMS TO MOVE AT A BREAKNECK PACE. Technological advances have made our lives easier in so many ways, but they’ve also led to constant notifications, information overload and 24/7 connectivity. It’s little wonder that people look for small ways to escape, whether that’s getting absorbed in the plot of a gripping novel or succumbing to the addictive pull of a binge worthy TV series. Believe it or not, orchestral music can offer the same kind of fun and lighthearted diversion from daily life. The Sarasota Orchestra’s Great Escapes series is designed to do just that, providing a relaxing and approachable way to enjoy music by curating engaging and entertaining themed programs that blend light classics, popular tunes and conductor commentary. The newest entrant in the Great Escape series is A Musical Comedy which debuts on March 12, 2025.

that it makes a sound that’s loud enough and consistent enough. There’s a bit of acting to it, a little schtick that you do,” she adds. “It’s fun working with a typewriter on its own, but there are things you can do to tell a story and make it even more entertaining.”

Composer John Williams (who once described Leroy Anderson as “one of the great American masters of light orchestral music”) also has a short composition featured in A Musical Comedy . “Scherzo for Motorcycle and Orchestra” is a thrilling and energetic piece composed as part of the score Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade . Dynamic yet playful, this scherzo underscores an iconic chase scene in the film where the title character and his father escape on a stolen motorcycle. The work adopts the lively, quick pace of a scherzo, blending rapid orchestral passages with adventurous motifs, creating a sense of urgency and exhilaration.

Passages from La Cage Aux Folles and The Producers are just some of the other musical merriments you can expect from A Musical Comedy, which will have five performances at Holley Hall in the Beatrice Friedman Symphony Center. Shows are on March 12 at 5:30pm, March 13 at 7:30pm, March 14 at 5:30pm, March 15 at 7:30pm and March 16 at 4pm. ROSSINI’S CLOSE SHAVE

What modern audiences can learn about opera from The Barber of Seville’s infamous debut. Phil Lederer

WHEN THE BARBER OF SEVILLE OPENED AT SARASOTA OPERA THIS PAST FEBRUARY 22, THERE WERE NO ARMED GUARDS AT THE DOORS OR SENTRIES IN THE AISLES. There were no melees in the atrium or brouhahas on the balconies, nor a kerfuffle at the curtain or hurlyburlies of any sort. Quite to the contrary, reports from the evening indicate not a single disturbance and nary a rumpus in sight throughout the entire affair. In short, a complete and total absence of all hooliganism and general buffoonery.

Right: Michelle Heera Kim (left) and Rona Figueroa (right) were cast in FST’s production of The Heart Sellers after a nationwide search.

Indeed and by all accounts, Sarasota’s production of Rossini’s comic masterpiece was right bang up to the elephant, the audience captivated by a classic tale of young men in disguise, women on balconies, courtship over class lines and a surprisingly resourceful barber, like Sweeney Todd meets Romeo & Juliet but with a lot less blood, a bit more humor and from a time when deception could be romantic—as long as it’s sung in Italian. But this now-beloved staple of opera repertoires around the globe almost died at its debut, suffering an opening night so disastrous that Rossini himself refused to conduct the next night’s performance, lest he be taken by the rumbumptious mob and soon find himself grinning at the daisy roots from an eternity box.

According to Maestro Victor DeRenzi, Sarasota Opera’s Artistic Director and Principal Conductor, the stories are just that—balderdash and evening wheezes. “The stories about opening night appeared years after the premiere,” he says, “and were probably made up.”

But the scuttlebutt says different.

When Rossini’s The Barber of Seville premiered in 1816, it was under a different name, Almaviva. This is because a famous opera called The Barber of Seville already existed. It was written by Giovanni Paisiello more than 30 years prior and audiences still loved it. They loved it so much that when they heard some upstart gullyfluff named Rossini had the audacity to write his own version, they thought him right off his chump and readied themselves for a damned good swine up.

Here, it becomes important to understand what a claque is, and that operatic rivalries of the Victorian Age are not entirely dissimilar from an early-2000s white guy rap beef. (In this case, Eminem is both Paisiello and Rossini.) Charitably speaking, a claque is a passionate community of like minded enthusiasts who are, vocally and otherwise, visibly invested in the local arts scene. More accurately speaking, they were small mobs of instigators and extortionists who heckled artists they didn’t like or those who wouldn’t pay them not to. In Rossini’s case, it was the former.

Accounts vary on the exactitudes of that night in Rome, but some details remain constant. A loud claque of Paisiello supporters began disrupting the performance near as soon as the curtain rose. It didn’t help matters that the performer playing Count Almaviva broke a string on his guitar in the very first

scene, after insisting that he be allowed to tune it himself. Then the production’s Don Basilio tripped and broke his nose moments before his grand aria, La Calunnia, and a stray cat wandered onstage during the Act 1 finale and refused to leave, eventually being unceremoniously and parabolically removed by a singer who would never hear of PETA.

To top it all off, just about everyone ridiculed Rossini for conducting the night’s performance in a brand-new too-tight coat with big gold buttons and made of vicuna, a wild camelid found in the Andes mountains. But scholars agree that may have been fair game. The next night, Rossini feigned sickness and refused to conduct the second performance. If he had, he might have heard the audience calling his name in the streets and begging for an encore. But when the mafficking crowd arrived at his lodgings, according to one account, the composer hid in fear. According to another, he essentially told them in not uncertain terms to go away.

In discussion with Maestro DeRenzi about the current state of opera and its audience, suggesting the possibility that opera has outstayed its welcome, that 400 years is a jolly good run and perhaps the popular stereotype of the form as something staid and stuffy— tedium set to a soundtrack—has taken too great a hold of the popular imagination, it’s nice to see that same Rossini-esque passion still runs hot like blood in the heart of the thing. “If you have a problem with opera,” the maestro says, “get over yourself.” And he’s only half-joking, if that. “People overcomplicate what opera is,” DeRenzi continues. “It’s just storytelling.” Yet, as leader of a modern-day opera company—a celebrated one at that—the maestro finds himself at the front lines fighting an unending uphill battle against the weight of a pop culture that treats opera like a punching bag and a collective imagination that really has no idea what a night at the opera is. You don’t need to wear a top hat and tails, you don’t need to research the show before attending, a little violence could be said to be traditional and a ticket costs less than most popular concerts. What’s not to love?

“People create issues that aren’t issues,” the maestro says. “But if you haven’t seen opera, you don’t know what the experience of opera is.” He shrugs. What more is there to say? “And it’s not even a foreign language, if you’re Italian.” SRQ

SHERRI MILLS

“To me, the 3 most important words in real estate are you, you, and you.”

Testimonials

“Sherri is spectacular. Deep market knowledge, amazing responsiveness, tireless work ethic - all in the context of exceptional professionalism. My wife and I worked with Sherri for more than a year on the buy-side as she showed us numerous properties while learning and reflecting our preferences and priorities as we went along. When we did find a property we wanted, she was conservative and disciplined in her tactical recommendations - not a glimmer of self-interest reflected in her counsel. Once we had agreement, she was all over the details as we moved to closing - super helpful in helping to identify and arrange aspects of the sale that were not essential to closing but important to us (eg utilities, cable, insurance). Could not be more positive.”

“I cannot recommend Sherri more highly. She is the consummate professional. She gave us guidance on when to sell, how to sell, helped with staging and then sold the place in no time. She’s a delight to work with. Sherri was recommended by a close friend, so I was not surprised by how great she was, but she still exceeded all expectations. Five stars do not suffice.”

I have lived in Sarasota for 35 years and love this community more with each passing year. I taught Special Education, before becoming a Realtor 22 years ago, and what better prep for real estate! Asking questions, active listening, on-the- y problem solving and clear communication has given me a loyal following that has made me a Top Producing Realtor with Michael Saunders & Company, a premier Luxury brokerage rm in the area. There are a gazillion things to do from Day 1 to closing. My mission is the make the process smooth and easy for my clients. It’s that simple. After 22 years of negotiating, staging homes to sell, dealing with vendors & inspectors, working with attorneys & lenders, and overcoming the inevitable obstacles, I realize the magic is in the minutia. It’s what my clients don’t know that’s happening behind the scenes that makes the process easy. Easy for them. Gratifying for me.

PANORAMA RESIDENCE

TROP ARCHITECTURE

JUDGE’S NOTE “The thoughtfulness of this reimagined residence, with expansive curved windows to views of the Sarasota Bay accomplishes an emotional sensory experience it was intended to embrace. It is sophisticated yet comfortable and livable with excellent connections to the outdoors.”

Nestled in Hidden Harbor on Siesta Key, the Panorama Residence embodies the essence of modern coastal living— seamlessly blending timeless design with the surrounding coastal environment. The entrant reimagined the residence as an immersive sensory experience guided by biophilic design principles. The home forges a fluid connection between the indoor and outdoor spaces. Grand oak trees frame the geometric composition of the home. The unique shapes created opportunities for drama and play. The entry foyer now welcomes you with a sweeping curved stair and bridge that so ens the transition into the large open living space and outdoor terrace. The 12-foot tall by 40-feet wide floor-toceiling curved windows in the living room immediately draw you to the panoramic views of Sarasota Bay and protective mangroves. Two comfortable seating areas, a dining area and a kitchen compose the main open living space. Light and organic textures flow through the residence, melding the built environment and its natural surroundings.

The original home was built well but when asked to reimagine the potential of the existing home, we peeled back the layers of materials, intrusive walls and columns that blocked views, flow and natural light. Natural stones, shellcrete and cypress soffits were selected inside and out. Functionality and emotional resonance were prioritized. Thoughtful, intuitive layouts reflect the rhythms of modern life—open spaces designed for relaxation, connection and entertaining. The outdoor living area was expanded to include a state-of-the-art kitchen. A breakfast nook was removed from the original floor plan to create room for a covered lounge and outdoor stairs fostering a seamless indoor-outdoor experience. The result is a refined retreat where sustainability, resilience and beauty converge to celebrate Sarasota’s relaxed living.

HALF-LIGHT HOUSE

DSDG ARCHITECTS

JUDGE’S NOTE “Very ambitious architectural statement. Nice use of materials to tame the scale of this project. Warm accent materials help to break up the commercial scale and feel of the house and the interesting structural moves bring some drama to the more austere form.”

The Half Light House is a stunning modern residence on the Gulf Coast, offering breathtaking views of Sarasota Bay. Designed with a tropical modern aesthetic, the architecture is inspired by a simple 3x3 grid that deconstructs as you move from east to west. The house features an L-shaped floor plan, enabling a modified courtyard design that enhances the flow of natural light throughout the interior. Large, strategically positioned glazed openings highlight the various gathering spaces while providing flexibility and an open connection to the surroundings. Integrated louvered shading systems can be adjusted to filter direct sunlight and maximize ambient north-facing light. Additionally, the concrete roof extends beyond the facade in select areas, creating deep overhangs that provide comfortable outdoor spaces and improve energy efficiency indoors.

A defining feature of this contemporary dwelling is its integrated structural elements, including a dramatic third-floor cantilever anchored by a steel V-shaped column rising from the reflecting pool below. From the bay side, the outdoor living deck extends beyond the grid frame, emphasizing the column’s delicate yet robust appearance. Together, these design elements converge to form a captivating and cohesive structure. The main living space boasts double-height ceilings and glazing, with open circulation that creates a seamless flow between the interior and exterior living areas. The open staircase sculpture captures and emphasizes the volume of the space. The roof deck is a standout feature, offering expansive views of Sarasota to the east and the Gulf of Mexico to the west. With its meticulous a ention to detail, thoughtful design and stunning location, the Half Light House is a remarkable addition to the tropical modern architectural landscape of Sarasota.

Environmental stewardship lies at the heart of the design, with innovative features such as a geothermal HVAC system, sustainably sourced cedar shake roofing, spray foam insulation, certified green framing lumber, energy-efficient windows and doors and participation in a community solar program. These thoughtful elements deliver a high-performance, low-maintenance home that balances beauty with responsibility. A ention to detail permeates every corner, from the light blue louvered shu ers to the antique mirrors and brass la ice, showcasing a meticulous dedication to design and functionality. Island Breeze transcends traditional homebuilding, embodying a perfect synthesis of luxurious aesthetics, cu ing-edge innovation and sustainable practices—se ing a new benchmark in custom home design. Amid the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, including supply chain disruptions and labor shortages, the project required adaptability and creativity to source materials such as metal roofs, custom cabinetry and specialty finishes. MODERN 4-SQUARE

CMSA ARCHITECTS

The property owner requested a unique home with details se ing it apart from other Bird Key neighborhood homes. A farmhouse 4-square design is a central square or body of the house with 4 additional squares that are engaged with the central body on each corner, thus the ‘4-square’ term. This style is typically two stories tall with high peaked gable end roofs. The Modern 4-square property’s design infused characteristic 4-square details with creative innovations, such as dormers with floor-to-ceiling glass and multiple hip roof sections. The lack of overhangs, the floor-to-ceiling glass and the modern exterior finishes serve to modernize this style to create an updated look to this classic style. The most significant challenge was envisioning a design that addressed the home’s specific location in the neighborhood. The property is situated on a busy corner at the base of a vehicular and pedestrian bridge, resulting in a house that can be viewed from multiple directions. While in residential design it is o en common to showcase primarily the front and rear elevations, the Modern 4-square property’s unique position requires that side elevations be equally aesthetically pleasing. The entrant met the challenge by creating an extensive network of open patios and covered outdoor porch areas that surround the home and offer multiple elegant spaces for relaxing, dining and entertaining. The extensive use of floor-to-ceiling glass panels and roo op space maximizes the stunning waterfront and city views—accentuated by a standout 46 slider that blurs the indoor/outdoor living spaces and creates an expansive, airy floor plan. A masterful integration of architecture and nature. Positioned amidst sweeping canal and bay views, the design approach was to connect the view between the canal and bay from each program space and surrounding landscape. The result was a truly unique sea-through experience as the distinction between land and water fades away, allowing the beauty of the outdoors to flow into every corner of the home. The design of the 3,900-square-foot residence evolved to focus on placemaking for primary views, sunlight, shadow analysis and entertaining space. The structure is an integrated composition of geometric forms, including intersecting cubes, voids and folded plates to achieve a dynamic architectural experience. Original sketches had the pool in the front yard to gain valuable preserve views over the bay but sacrificed daylight on the northeast corner of the lot so future iterations placed the pool on the canal side buffered from the street. A two-sided patio with negative volume was a constant driving concept to connect the two bodies of water while a primary suite perched above the patio with corner sliding doors captures breezes from its position. The remaining three bedrooms are located on the second floor for privacy therefore allowing the entire first floor unobstructed expansive glass and entertaining space which spills outdoors onto elevated patio and pool deck space. The interior aesthetic echoes the clean and contemporary exterior with a warm neutral pale e bathed in natural light to focus a ention inward to 3D tile displays highlighted with exquisite lighting. Hallway terminations are celebrated with floor-to-ceiling glass and nook seating areas with sliding doors to make the hallways active space. A refined formulation of each space makes this home a remarkable example of innovative architecture that celebrates the harmony between human-made and natural worlds.

MIRA MAR BEACH

DSDG ARCHITECTS

One of two identical planned beach homes became the owner’s primary residence upon completion. The allure of the beach was too much to resist and the home was too flawless to not live full-time. Located on Mira Mar Beach just north of Crescent Beach along the washed-away Beach Road stands a new jewel of a beach home. Two habitable stories with a roof deck are elevated above the most restrictive floodplain. Storm and flood resilience were paramount on this residence. Local restrictions limit the amount of enclosed space at the ground level so the pool was tucked under the elevated home to create a gro o-style environment without sacrificing yard space. The pool is shaded and serene in contrast with the bright and warm Gulf waters just beyond. The garage is also tucked behind the circulation core with an open-air carport grabbing similar mid-century vibes from Sarasota School of Architecture masters. The livable area above the floodplain consists of two 1,300 square-foot floor plates traditionally laid out with living space and a single bedroom below with four bedrooms above including the primary suite overlooking the beach. The 28-foot wide building has glass sliding doors the entire width to capture the utmost reaches of shore with small silver windows on the side walls to catch peripheral glances. Sand-colored hardwood floors, white marble countertops and shiplap walls identify the beach aesthetic as the natural blue hues flood the space from its idyllic se ing. The roof deck and exterior warmth are minimally appointed with an artificial turf deck to so en the mood and wood-look siding to oppose the starkness of the pearly white stucco. Cantilevered stone treads climb the privacy wall for the ascent up to the living levels. The resiliency of the project was under full display with this year’s storms as there was no damage to the home and only site cleanup. A testament to engineering and properly designing for intense storms and sea rise.

JUDGE’S NOTE “This beautiful beach home constructed to meet the most restrictive flood plane is a masterpiece for aestically pleasing sustainable archiecture that functions. This residence illustrates the strength in design excellence.”

MODUS BUILDERS PLATINUM

2149 Hyde Park represents the fusion of thoughtful design, innovative construction techniques and a deep appreciation for mid-century modern aesthetics. This home was designed as a speculative property tailored to the burgeoning Sarasota market. Drawing inspiration from his architectural studies and his passion for clean, timeless design—the entrant envisioned a space that would blend modern functionality with enduring style. The concept behind 2149 Hyde Park was to create a home that was both visually striking and highly efficient. The design prioritizes sustainability, structural integrity and open, flexible spaces that suit the needs of contemporary living. With an emphasis on natural light, the home features expansive windows and an open floor plan that seamlessly connects indoor and outdoor living areas. One of the key challenges of this project was creating a home that was not only aesthetically appealing but also durable and energy-efficient. To meet these goals, the entrant collaborated with talented trade partners to incorporate innovative building materials, such as precast hollow core concrete panels for the floor and roof. These materials provide excellent thermal insulation, strength and low-maintenance durability— ensuring the home will stand the test of time. The success of 2149 Hyde Park was made possible by the collaboration between the entrant and a discerning buyer who shared his vision. Together, they transformed a conceptual design into a reality—demonstrating that thoughtful, well-executed architecture can offer both beauty and functionality while addressing the practical demands of modern living.

JUDGE’S NOTE “Love the screen detailing implemented throughout the residence — this texture becomes the defiining element and character of the project.”

A er establishing a permanent residence in New Hampshire, the owners sought a second home in Sarasota for the colder months. They selected a modern single-family residence near Selby Gardens, Sarasota Memorial Hospital, and local shops and restaurants. Despite being built in 2003 and showing some signs of aging, the house had a solid structure, making it ideal for renovation. The property consists of two combined lots with the back bordering the southern rear property line, which means the front faces a large northern yard that includes an access gate, driveway, main entrance, swimming pool and outdoor terrace. To address the lack of privacy and usable space, the owners aimed to create distinct public and private areas. They also identified several features that needed modification, including an inefficient galley-style kitchen, inadequate storage in the primary bedroom and bathroom, and necessary updates to finishes, lighting and HVAC systems. To improve privacy, the main front door was moved closer to the garages. A semi-opaque screen wall was installed between the driveway and outdoor space to create separate areas. The same screening was also applied to the guest suite terraces on the second floor. Internally, rooms were reconfigured for be er functionality and storage. A new neutral material pale e was chosen to complement the owners’ vibrant artwork. Oak cabinetry and stained cypress ceilings, along with mother-of-pearl accents in the terrazzo floor, added warmth. DWY LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTS

The Bahia Vista Residence demonstrates how residential design can heal and restore the urban ecological fabric while exceeding the client’s vision of transforming a traditional ornamental property into a serene, luxurious retreat. Designed to create the highest level of modern tranquility, the landscape architect defined circulation, hardscape, pool placement, plant materials and site furnishings. This cra s an immersive haven for a young family and their dog. A primary challenge was addressing the constraints of a dense urban site. Circulation was reorganized to protect and celebrate the property’s grand oak tree. It is preserved by minimizing impact on its root zone while maximizing space between the driveway, pool deck and privacy wall. The driveway was repositioned to the site’s periphery, concealing the private side of the home from the street and allowing the house to gradually reveal itself. Permeable materials enhance stormwater management, while privacy walls were relocated to the site’s edges to optimize usable space and ecological integrity. At the core, a swimming pool captures optimal sunlight, serving as a tranquil focal point. Custom terrazzo paving, seamlessly extending from the interior, reduces heatisland effects and enhances aesthetics. Native and Florida-friendly plantings frame the pool and garden, providing privacy, texture and shade while buffering urban density with lush perimeter layers. The exotic plant pale e was transformed into an ecologically productive landscape by replacing manicured turf and invasive species with largely native flora, reducing water use, chemical reliance and emissions. Biodiversity and habitat were restored, underscoring ecological preservation. The Bahia Vista Residence exemplifies sustainable residential design by integrating permeable hardscapes, preserving mature trees and increasing native plant diversity. Synonymous with Sarasota’s identity, this sanctuary balances ecological stewardship with modern elegance, offering a legacy of serenity and environmental harmony for the young couple and their dog to enjoy for decades to come.

From its inception, the project emphasized sustainability and collaboration, with the team working closely with architectural, engineering and design experts across the country to achieve a low-maintenance, highly detailed home built with natural, environmentally friendly materials. The home showcases a geothermal HVAC system that not only heats the pool and water but also efficiently cools high-heat AV equipment, maximizing energy conservation. Its sustainability is further emphasized through the use of certified green materials, including Timberstrand framing (NGBS), Loewen insulated windows (USGBC) and a Red Cedar shake roof sourced a er consulting with the Cedar Shake & Shingle Bureau and the nation’s top installer, chosen for its minimal carbon footprint. A sealed building envelope featuring open-cell spray foam insulation achieves R-45 roof and R-23 exterior wall ratings, ensuring superior energy efficiency. Additionally, the home is powered through a community solar program, preserving the pristine views of the Bayfront while aligning with modern sustainable living principles. The collaborative pre-construction process enabled the team to work with an out-of-state architect to exceed local requirements, delivering a home that balances stunning cra smanship and environmental responsibility. Overcoming the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, including labor shortages and supply chain delays, the team demonstrated resilience by sourcing specialty materials such as metal roofs and custom finishes, ensuring the design integrity remained uncompromised. Island Breeze is more than a custom home—it is a symbol of what is possible when luxury and sustainability converge. As a paragon of eco-friendly innovation and timeless elegance, it inspires an elevated lifestyle rooted in environmental mindfulness.

Principle, David Poorman Architect, Naples, Florida

David Poorman’s childhood was a blend of farm and beach, having moved at an early age from Ohio to Naples, Florida in 1972. He interned in carpentry while in high school, then worked as a carpenter for two years before enrolling in the architecture programs at St. Petersburg Junior College and the University of Florida. After receiving a Bachelor of Design at University of Florida, David earned his Master’s in Architecture from Princeton University. He lived for ten years in downtown Chicago, working and travelling for Perkins and Will and then for David Woodhouse Architects. A design project for an internationally known Illinois arboretum convinced him that the indigenous Southwest Florida landscape was personally more inspiring, and he returned to his Florida roots in 2001. In 2010, David established David Poorman Architect LLC (DPA) in Naples, an award winning firm specializing in small scale residential and commercial projects. His work continues to be inspired and informed by Florida’s natural resources, climate, and immemorial beauty. He still enjoys growing things and marathon swims in the Gulf. Each unique project at DPA maintains these core principles: a fundamental love for the craft of architecture; the belief that the soul of any project is manifested through its attention to and expression of detail; responsible, meaningful and fulfilling design is a result of the collaborative and non-dictatorial effort with the client— listen first, speak through design.

Principle Architect, Vellum Architecture + Design, Asheville, North Carolina

Following 15 years of practicing architecture for acclaimed firms in Aspen, Colorado, Mark relocated to the Asheville area to establish his own practice, Vellum. Blending natural materials with a modern and adventurous use of form, Mark’s work challenges the traditional notion of the mountain home. Employing ideas honed in the West the practice has thrived in Western North Carolina. In 2021 Vellum was named Best New Firm in the South by Architect’s Newspaper. Influenced most by his extensive travels, Mark has visited over forty countries on five continents, has lived in Spain and spent a significant amount of time working in Italy. This experience has shaped his work significantly, work that is deeply rooted in “Place Making”: honoring what makes a site truly unique and special, he weaves an architectural language that is both provocative and respectful of its place.

SRQ HOME AND DESIGN

H & D COVETED CLOSETS

Say goodbye to winter and hello to spring with these hot new trends in home and design from some of the area’s finest home decor experts.

Moody Dark Colors + Wallpaper for Backing

Dark, dramatic closets are taking center stage this season, bringing a luxurious and modern feel to home design. Deep hues like charcoal, navy, espresso and forest green create an intimate and sophisticated ambiance, turning a once-overlooked storage space into a statement room. These rich colors add depth and warmth, making the closet feel like a boutique dressing space. When paired with matte black or brass hardware, the look is elevated even further. To balance the darker tones, consider integrating soft LED lighting, glass accents or lighter-colored shelving for contrast. Highgloss finishes can enhance the depth of these shades, while matte surfaces create a velvety, understated elegance. Whether you opt for painted wood, lacquered cabinetry, or dark-stained veneers, moody hues make your closet feel curated and intentional. “This trend is perfect for homeowners who want to add a touch of drama and sophistication to their wardrobe space,” shares Teresa Renson, Vice President of Operations at Closet Envy. Closets are no longer just about storage—they’re becoming personal style statements, and wallpaper is a key player in this transformation. Applying wallpaper to the closet backing or ceiling adds a bold and unexpected touch, instantly elevating the space. Whether it’s a subtle textured print, a botanical motif, or a dramatic geometric pattern, wallpaper brings personality and depth to an otherwise functional area. It’s an easy way to add color without overwhelming the space, especially when paired with neutral shelving and cabinetry. Metallic and pearlized finishes create a glamorous effect, while linen or grass cloth textures add a soft, organic feel. For those who love a touch of drama, a dark, moody wallpaper on the ceiling can make the space feel cozy and luxurious. This trend is perfect for homeowners looking to infuse creativity and design-forward thinking into their closet, turning it into a true extension of their personal style. H & D WOOD VIBE

Furniture With Curves+ Wood Slats

“Now, more than ever, we are seeing an increasing trend of solid wood furniture with curves and rounded corners,” says Dutchcrafters Marketing and Marketplace Manager Marina de Sa Nogueira. “Within the past year or so, this trend started becoming more prominent. Curves add a softness to rooms, breaking up the more rigid straight lines. They create an open and welcoming appeal to any space while creating something visually captivating.” This trend is seeing a rise in all furniture categories, from curved dining room chairs to table bases and arched top hutches, and even in the bedroom with curved headboards. Curved furniture lines create an organic look in a room, and people are drawn to it because they want a more authentic feel to their home. To complement this trend, curved lighting or vases can create a cohesive room scene. Whether in large statement pieces or subtle accents, curved furniture helps create a comfortable living space. As more people seek warmth and uniqueness in their homes, curvy furniture continues to shape modern interiors in 2025 as one of the most popular trends. Once a staple of mid-century modern design, wood slats are making a strong comeback in contemporary design. This detail is being reimagined in furniture pieces such as dressers, nightstands and headboards, adding depth, texture and a natural aesthetic to any space. Slatted designs introduce a structured yet airy feel and enhance visual interest, and its practical design make it easy to incorporate into many spaces. The versatility of wood slats offers endless customization options—whether left in a raw, natural finish to highlight the wood grain, stained for warmth, or painted for a bold statement. This trend aligns with the growing preference for organic, nature-inspired designs, while bringing a sense of organization and structure into modern homes. Whether incorporated in subtle details or as a major design feature, wood slats provide a refined yet functional touch to contemporary furniture. Expect to see this design detail continue gaining popularity throughout the year. DutchCrafters, 3709 N Lockwood Ridge Rd, Sarasota, 941894-6747, dutchcrafter.com

A STAR IS REBORN

Mitch Rosenbaum is ready for his second act as he takes on the role of executive chef at Hamlet’s Eatery. Kate Wight PHOTOGRAPHY

ROSENBAUM HAS A LONG AND STORIED CAREER IN THE CULINARY INDUSTRY. From 1999 to 2004, he served as the executive chef at local mainstay Ophelia’s on the Bay before heading west to work at prestigious eateries including Bobby Flay’s Mesa Grill at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas, which earned a Michelin star during his tenure as executive chef. He has prepared food for a lot of famous people over the years and even met former First Lady Michelle Obama a few times while working at the restaurant del Alma in Corvallis, Oregon. Rosenbaum retired from the culinary world a few years back to spend more time with his family, but after some time he found himself getting restless. “I’ve missed the kitchen for a while,” Rosenbaum admits. “Being a retiree was just not interesting.”

special include locallysourced ingredients.
Chef Mitch Rosenbaum came out of retirement to tread the boards at Hamlet’s.
This page: At Hamlet’s Eatery, the “O Brave New World Bowls” change weekly and feature globallyinspired flavors.

Suddenly, the ultimate job opportunity entered from stage right. Kim Livengood owns The Bazaar on Apricot & Lime, an indie indoor market with eclectic wares from local makers and vendors. She also owns Hamlet’s Eatery, a food truck that is permanently stationed in the courtyard of The Bazaar. Hamlet’s is open a few days a week for limited hours and its everrotating menu is a fun, creative challenge for a skilled chef. If Rosenbaum was ready for his comeback, then Hamlet’s was the perfect stage.

“The hours at Hamlet’s are really ideal,” Rosenbaum says. “I’m there from 11 to 3, so I can drop my son off at school in the morning before I head in.” The familyfriendly hours weren’t the only draw. Livengood was excited to bring Rosenbaum on board and was happy to give him pretty free reign over the menu. Hamlet’s has always offered lots of vegetarian and vegan entrees alongside more carnivorous fare (as expressed in the eatery’s slogan, “To Meat, Or Not to Meat”) and Rosenbaum preserved that tradition. He also held on to some favorites which remain on the menu weekin and week-out, like the Bard’s Breakfast, Hamlet’s Burger and the Melty Macbeth. Other menu items, though, change from week-to-week.

“I’ve kept the rest of the menu on a rotation,” Rosenbaum explains. “Lately the rotation has been crepes and some sandwiches that feature my homemade bread.” Other rotating menu items include avocado toast, wraps and the O Brave New

World Bowls—named for a line in Shakespeare’s The Tempest. Those items will appear on the menu each week, but the details will be different. One week, the featured bowl might be ital stew, a fragrant Jamaicaninspired stew with tropical vegetables, coconut milk and fresh herbs ladled over jasmine rice. The next week, it might be vegan black bean chili with roasted onions, chilis and bell peppers, or a shrimp, sweet corn and crab chowder. Rosenbaum draws inspiration from whatever ingredients are fresh and seasonal and from his own diverse upbringing.

“I’m originally from New York City so I was exposed to people from pretty much every continent,” he says. “I try to stay true to those flavors. Nothing too crazily fused, but things that make sense. Even with the vegan dishes, there are authentic foods that are so specific to cultures whether that’s Indian or West Indian that I like to play off of. I like a bit of the Floribbean vibe, but elevated. And we were certainly focused on Southwest-style food at Mesa Grill, so I brought a lot of those tricks with me.”

Since Rosenbaum took the reins, Hamlet’s Eatery has been getting rave reviews. It seems his encore performance has been very well-received. Hamlet’s is open Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 11am3pm and also opens for special events like live music in the courtyard at The Bazaar. The new weekly menu is posted every Wednesday on the restaurant’s Facebook page at facebook.com/HamletsEatery. SRQ

CRAZY REBOOT

Pazzo reboots on Orange Avenue with ItalianAmerican perfection. Andrew Fabian

IT’S SAID THAT “CRAZY” IS DOING SOMETHING REPEATEDLY AND EXPECTING A DIFFERENT RESULT. For many in Sarasota, “crazy” would be if the Calore family wasn’t helming a restaurant serving up some of the best Italian-American cuisine south of Jersey. The Calore’s first introduced their crazy (pazzo in Italian) good food to the city in 2012 with Mozzarella Fella on Main Street, a casual sandwich shop whose chicken parm made belt buckles panic. Then it was Pazzo Southside in the Hillview district right on Osprey Avenue, a small, bustling, full-service restaurant that served lunch and dinner to anyone lucky enough to get a table. They bet big on a move to a big space on Hillview that, through the many pitfalls of the grueling restaurant business, didn’t work out. And they return now with Pazzo on Orange, just north of Fruitville, bringing the same greatest hits that made the first Pazzo so well loved, with a couple new ones thrown in. New co-owner and former front-of-house manager Frank Rocco—who actually used to dine at Chef Mike Calore’s restaurant in Brooklyn—assumes his position once again as the floor general. The kitchen is now headed by Andrew Calore, with father Mike Sr. steering the saucepans and older brother Mike Jr. at the pizza oven. “Everything I learned, I learned from my dad,” says Chef Andrew, “and he always said to keep it simple.” Fortunately, “simple” doesn’t mean tasteless.

Below: The fresh mozzarella salad is the perfect antipasto with bright, familiar flavors.
PHOTOGRAPHY BY WES ROBERTS.

Below, left to right:

Baked, breaded clams eat more like little garlic rolls than light shellfish; A crazy fluffy cheesecake will fill any remaining space in a diner’s stomach.

Take the baked clams oreganata, for example. There’s nothing but breadcrumbs, garlic, a touch of herbs and spices, a bit of butter and the perfect temperature that transforms the little mollusks into savory bites. Or another starter staple, the fresh mozzarella salad. It starts off as a caprese with housemade mozzarella, sliced tomatoes and sweet basil, then adds houseroasted bell peppers (an all-day process) and aged prosciutto before getting a drizzle of sweet balsamic glaze. Both are balanced, delicious and let the main ingredients speak for themselves.

Those who grew up in Italian enclaves in the northeast might also recognize the meatball salad, a simple plate of mixed greens, olive oil and red wine vinegar topped with a dollop of Sunday gravy.

While all pasta dishes deserve attention, standouts include the rigatoni prosciutto, farfalle and seafood linguine. The rigatoni prosciutto is a savory, hardy bowl of rigatoni, prosciutto, mushrooms, arugula, fresh mozzarella, sweet onions, garlic and olive oil. It’s a wonderful mix of flavors, with the prosciutto and mushrooms adding an especially nice bit of salt and umami. If umami is the goal, however, the farfalle shines. The magic comes primarily from the parmesan cream sauce. Parmesan cheese, as many may already know, contains a very high amount of glutamate, the amino acid responsible for the “fifth taste” most commonly associated with Japanese cuisine—umami was first discovered and studied by a Japanese scientist, after all. The result is a pasta dish so mouthwatering that it’s easy

to blow right past your body’s pleas to stop eating it.

For those in the mood for seafood, the seafood linguine should check every box. The generous portion comes with lobster tail, shrimp, mussels, clams and calamari, all tossed with linguine in a spicy fra diavolo red sauce. The blend of diverse seafood captures a good mix of flavors, from the light buttery profile of lobster to the salt and brine of the mussels and clams.

Entrees include the usual suspects like marsala plates, a mix of chicken, pork and veal offerings, and a delicious risotto. Altogether, these are the quintessential flavors of Italian-American cuisine expressed to perfection.

From the oven, Pazzo’s game has come a long way from its first offerings on Osprey Avenue. The pizzas are somewhere between New York-style and Neapolitan, with a nice thin crust that holds its form well. Start off with the barebones tomatoes and basil pizza to gain an appreciation for the pie, then dive into the heftier options like short rib and onions or the deliciously salty broccoli rabe and sausage.

The cheesecake has also come a long way since Chef Andrew’s first go on Osprey Avenue. This iteration is fluffier, more consistent and a little less sugary. It showcases the growth and maturation of a chef who was practically raised in a restaurant kitchen.

In the new, larger, refined space on Orange Avenue, replete with an overflow “party room” and ample patio, this next chapter of the Pazzo story feels like a safe bet. The food’s still crazy good though. SRQ

BRENA SLATER, CEO OF THE SAFE CHILDREN COALITION, IS KNOWN TO BE A TIRELESS ADVOCATE FOR CHILD WELFARE IN OUR COMMUNITY. Described by her colleagues as someone who is “truly compassionate, understands the child welfare system and knows what it takes to run a successful community-based care agency,” she is well-deserving of SRQ Magazine’s Good Hero Philanthropy Award. Slater was born in Germany but because her father was in the military, her family moved around to many states including Virginia, Colorado, North Carolina and several others. Today, the Hillsborough County resident is the proud mother of two amazing children, a 25-year-old son who is an engineer and a 15-year-old daughter that keeps her parents busy with travel volleyball. When she’s not working, Slater enjoys time with her family and friends.

Despite her successful role as a leader, Slater did not come from the corporate world. Her professional journey began with work in the child welfare arena. She came to Florida in 1996 and began working with the Suncoast Region of Child Welfare. “I have been passionate about child welfare since 1989 when I began my career at a runaway shelter for teen girls,” she shares. Over the years, she has worked for the Department of Children and Families as a child abuse investigator, case manager and operations manager over Circuit 12 which is Sarasota Manatee and Desoto Counties. She began working with the Safe Children Coalition in 2013 as the Vice President overseeing child welfare and she became the CEO/President in 2019.

Slater’s job is a big one and no day is ever the same. “Safe Children Coalition served over 9,000 children last year and I have over 300 employees working tirelessly in multiple programs,” she explains. “We have a budget over 60 million dollars a year and are responsible for the care and custody of children in our community. We serve thousands of children and families through diversion and prevention in-home services so the family can remain together, foster care for children who have been removed from their families and a reunification program to help heal the families so they can be together safely. We also have adoption services so children can find their forever family and a shelter for children that need a respite when they or their families need more intervention services.” A good deal of Slater’s time is spent advocating locally and statewide for additional funding for the

children and families in our area. So far, Safe Children Coalition has raised over 7 million dollars toward their 9.5 million dollar goal for a new youth shelter. “Our youth shelter is the only one for homeless, truant and runaway teens in Sarasota and Desoto counties. We serve teens from Manatee county too,” she adds.

The team at Safe Children Coalition believes in the strength of community partnership and collective wisdom. Their approach is inclusive, valuing the voices and contributions of children, youth, families, staff and community partners. “I like working with other nonprofits to collaborate so our area can be the leader of best practice in the state,” Slater says, sharing this quote by an anonymous author: “Our success is not measured by the number of services we provide, but by the lives we transform and the communities we empower.”

Safe Children Coalition is proud of the work and services they offer and they often take prospective donors on tours of their shelter. “Donors should get involved where they feel most passionate and Safe Children Coalition is a good choice,” Slater shares. “We are a public/private partnership and have been providing services for children and youth in Circuit 12 (Sarasota, Manatee, and Desoto counties) as the lead community-based care agency since 1997. Our programs are solid, and provide an opportunity for anyone who cares about children to make a difference.”

Slater humbly acknowledges being named a Good Hero and accepts the nomination

with pride. “Being honored as a Good Hero signifies a deep commitment to making a positive, lasting impact. To me, it represents the acknowledgment of efforts that go beyond personal gain, focusing on improving the lives of others and contributing to the collective well-being of the community. It recognizes my service, compassion and the drive to create meaningful change,” she says. “It also reflects the importance of collaboration and shared responsibility— it is an honor to work with others to solve challenges, advocate for vulnerable groups and create opportunities for everyone to thrive. In the context of child and family well-being it is a way to reinforce the idea that small, consistent actions add up to significant transformations in people’s lives. Ultimately, it is a humbling reminder of the ripple effect that good work can have. This honor isn’t just personal recognition, but for the chance to inspire others to get involved, make a difference and continue building a more caring, supportive and brighter community.”

The Farmers Market at Lakewood Ranch has come a long way since it was first established in 2017 at the Sarasota Polo Grounds. The Market was open on Wednesday nights and had fewer than 20 vendors. Within three years, The Market had moved to the parking lot of the Lakewood Ranch Medical Center where it was open on Sundays and soon grew to 65 vendors. In 2021, The Market relocated once again to Waterside Place where it currently makes its home every Sunday year-round.

THE FARMERS MARKET AT LAKEWOOD RANCH HAS GROWN INTO ONE OF THE AREA’S PREMIER ATTRACTIONS.

Market Magic

THE FARMERS MARKET AT LAKEWOOD RANCH HAS COME A LONG WAY. When it was first established in 2017 at the Sarasota Polo Grounds, The Market was open on Wednesday nights and had fewer than 20 vendors. Within three years, The Market had moved to the parking lot of the Lakewood Ranch Medical Center where it was open on Sundays and soon grew to 65 vendors. In 2021, The Market relocated once again to Waterside Place where it currently makes its home every Sunday year-round from 10am to 2pm.

“The Market was the first event to take place at Waterside Place. We had one tenant open at the time, Good Liquid Brewing,” says market manager Morgan Bettes-Angell. “We were drawing thousands of people over to Waterside when the town center wasn’t even established yet. Since then we’ve grown to just over 100 vendors. In season, we draw about 6,000 to 9,000 people to the market each Sunday, and we have around 3,500 to 4,500 attendees through summer.”

It’s no accident that The Market is such a staggering success. BettesAngell is an experienced event planner who pays attention to every detail. Though the vendor list is long, it has been carefully curated.

“We’re really lucky that we get so many applications from so many people. We try to stick within certain categories that we feel fit farmers’ markets, so your farm and garden, kitchen, handmade, artisanal and

then of course food and drink,” Bettes-Angell says. “When we look through applications we do try to pick things that stand out. We’re really scouring, looking for the best, looking for new, looking for different. We’ve also had some of our vendors with us since the very beginning, who believed in what the market could be.”

And as good as they are, The Market experience goes beyond the meticulously chosen vendors. There are also other activities and amenities for visitors to enjoy. Get in some mindfulness and movement before The Market opens with Yoga in the Park, which takes place right by the water from 9am to 10pm. Yoga is free for community residents and $10.00 for nonresidents. Local organizations also partner with The Market to offer entertaining and educational programming in The Kids’ Zone, which is located in the green space next to Green Liquid Brewing Co. Kids can do

fun science experiments, learn about robotics and more. There’s also a brother-sister duo who offer face-painting and balloon twisting for tips as they save up for college. And then, there’s the music. Each week in the pavilion, there’s a different live musical act, typically local artists in the singer-songwriter vein. And all of this takes place in an incredibly picturesque environment.

“I think the unique thing about having The Market at Waterside is the view. We’re right there on the water. We have a ton of seating, so you can find a quiet corner or you can find seating right on main street for people watching and dog watching. There are so many spots to make a little camp with your food and finds and meet your friends,” says Bettes-Angell. “Waterside Place was just a game changer. I mean, that was the destination that the market was always going to move to. But having been through the polo grounds and the hospital parking lot, it was like—‘Oh my goodness, we’re finally home!” LL The Farmers Market at Lakewood Ranch, 1561 Lakefront Drive, Lakewood Ranch, lakewoodranch.com/life-onthe-ranch/themarket.

A Place for Everyone

THE LAKEWOOD RANCH LIBRARY IS MORE THAN A PLACE TO PICK UP A BOOK—IT’S A CRUCIAL COMMUNITY HUB.

LIBRARIES HAVE ALWAYS BEEN MORE THAN JUST A PLACE TO GET BOOKS—they are hubs of community connection. In an era where true “third places”—spaces where people can connect with others outside of work and home—are increasingly rare, libraries have stepped up to fill the void. The Lakewood Ranch Library, which celebrated its one-year anniversary on January 12, 2025, perfectly exemplifies this, blending traditional library services with innovative spaces and programs that meet the needs of a modern community. Tiffany Mautino is the branch manager of the Lakewood Ranch Library, but her work began long before the building opened to the public. Her involvement with the structure itself started in March of 2023 when the exterior of the building was nearly complete but the interior was mostly concrete walls and not much else. That August, Mautino began working out of the building so she could answer any questions the builders and architects had. “I started being able to be in here daily and see it take shape and see paint go on the walls and shelves start to go up, and that’s the really interesting part about this building project,” says Mautino. “I’ve been on renovation projects before, but all that work was done very quickly and put back in the building. This one you got to see in stages, which was really interesting.”

Below: Since it opened last year, the Lakewood Ranch Library has become a community cornerstone.

Mautino wasn’t the only one watching the space come together. Some libraries have Friends of the Library groups composed of people who support their local libraries. The Friends of Lakewood Ranch Library group formed seven years ago, long before the library itself existed. “Our mission is to advocate for the library, and we did a lot of advocating not just with the public but with the commissioners to get the library here,” says Sue Ann Miller, president of the Friends of Lakewood Ranch Library.

“That’s one of our major accomplishments, as well as raising over $400,000 to double the opening day collection from 23,000 to 46,000 items here in the library. That’s a real credit to this community. They love their library and certainly support them.” Mautino and many of the Friends were on hand in September 2023 to witness the truck arrive with boxes upon boxes of books that would fill the empty shelves. “We were all waiting outside and cheering and acting fools, but it was pretty cool,” Mautino laughs. “That day we brought in probably about 42,000 items. I forget how many boxes we brought in. We got it all up on the shelf in, I think, a week and a half. My team doesn’t work slow and they like to be busy.”

Mautino hired most of her team in the summer of 2023 before the branch opened so they were able to go to other library branches and train with their staff before opening day. Instead of specifically looking for people with

library experience, Mautino focused on hiring the best customer service people as well as people with translatable skills.

“We’re thrilled with the facility, we’re thrilled with the programs it offers, but we just find the staff here to be in some ways more than we could ever hope for,” Miller enthuses. “Everyone from Tiffany and the staff down to the housekeeping crew is a unique group of people that are employed here. They all bring additional talent, whether it’s people with languages or one of our library assistants who is very much into engineering and technology and can fix anything and run anything in the workshop. It’s an exceptional group of people and we’re very, very pleased to work with them.”

That team has helped elevate the programming that the library offers and turn the building into a true community center. The event calendar is packed with an incredibly diverse array of classes and activities, the vast majority of which are free (some are donationbased). Children’s playgroups, yoga and Zumba classes on the roof, arts and culture lectures given by area experts, genealogy courses, immersion conversational language groups, ukulele workshops—and that’s barely scratching the surface. There are also sewing classes that make use of the library’s Makerspace, which is equipped with machines like sewing machines and sergers as well as a 3D printer. These events and amenities are

possible through the support of the staff, as well as the dedicated efforts of community volunteers made up of adults and students who donate their time and talents.

With all the Lakewood Ranch Library has to offer, there’s even more they would love to. The second floor of the library building remains unfinished, and Mautino and Miller have plenty of ideas of what can be done with that 25,000 feet of unused space. The Friends run a volunteerstaffed bookstore that supports their ongoing fundraising efforts and are in need of a place to sort and store books. There has been a huge demand among students for small, private study rooms which are desperately needed. And, like her team, Mautino is always thinking creatively.

“We definitely want space for study rooms, but I would also like to see that area as a shared workspace with county departments and organizations. Libraries have become spaces for communities, but also very much spaces for people to come and find resources for things like social services,” Mautino says. “I think it would be a really amazing thing if instead of just giving someone a phone number or address and asking them to go downtown, I could take them upstairs and connect them directly to the right person. A shared workspace would be an incredible benefit to the community.” LL Lakewood Ranch Library, 16410 Rangeland Parkway, Bradenton, 941-7424500, friendsoflakewoodranchlibrary.org.

Spring Explorations

FOUR AREA BUSINESSES OFFER EXCITING AND CREATIVE ACTIVITIES FOR KIDS SO PARENTS CAN TAKE A BREAK WHILE SCHOOL IS OUT.

SPRING BREAK IS THE PERFECT TIME FOR FAMILIES to step away from their usual routines and create lasting memories together. Whether it’s an outdoor adventure perfect for burning off some energy or an artistic pursuit that lets creativity shine, Lakewood Ranch has plenty of family-friendly pursuits to explore while school isn’t in session. These four local businesses offer a variety of activities so parents can avoid cabin fever and take their kids on fun-filled adventures without leaving town.

ARTS A BLAZE

“Painting pottery is really approachable, so even if you have no experience you can pretty much make it happen,” says Joann Kavanaugh. “I always like to tell people, if you can hold a paintbrush, you can do it.”

Kavanaugh is the owner of Arts A Blaze Studio, Lakewood Ranch’s original pottery painting studio. Since 2009, crafters of all ages, abilities and skill levels have been able to come into Arts A Blaze, choose a piece of pottery to paint and put their own creative twist on it. Once a piece is painted, you leave it at the studio to be fired and come in to pick it up when it’s done, typically about a week later. In addition to traditional pottery pieces like coffee mugs and vases, Arts A Blaze also offers fun figurines that appeal to kids.

“Right now axolotls are trending, so we’re sure to have those. Other sea creatures I like to get are mermaids, dolphins, sharks, manatees—anything that really screams Florida is always going to be hot,” Kavanaugh says. While Arts A Blaze does accommodate walk-ins, the studio has recently started taking reservations on its website and Kavanaugh

urges people to reserve a spot ahead of time, especially on busier days like holidays and weekends. You can also follow the studio on social media to learn more about themed months, pottery wheel classes and more. 8111 Lakewood Main Street #107, Bradenton, 941306-5840, artsablazestudio.com.

THE FISH HOLE AT LAKEWOOD RANCH

Located in downtown Lakewood Ranch, The Fish Hole is an 18-hole miniature golf course that almost feels like its own little world. The course itself has a rustic feel, with weathered wood structures and decorative draped fishnet creating a nautical vibe. Each hole features a sign with a fact about a fish so kids can learn something interesting while waiting for their turn to putt—and then there are the koi fish.“Kids always love the koi fish. Sometimes that’s almost the draw there, just to be able to

feed these giant fish,” says general manager Sean Driscoll. “They’re trained like dogs, I tell people. The fish will come right up to you because they know if there are people they’re going to get fed.”

The Fish Hole is an activity that won’t break the bank. Currently, everyone from age four and up plays $13.08 for the first round, while golfers three and under play for free. The course also offers $2 same day replays that are good all day. If you take your family golfing in the morning and leave to get lunch, you can still come back and play another round for $2 each. The course also sells bottled drinks and ice cream treats if you need to cool down on a warm spring day. “We’re familyfriendly,” Driscoll says. “Kids, parents and grandparents, everyone can go out and have a good time—get off the phones and computers and just enjoy the natural atmosphere.” 10725 Rodeo Drive, Bradenton, 941-306-5891, thefishhole.com.

LIVING LAKEWOOD

JUMPIN FUN

At Jumpin Fun Inflata Park, you and your kids can literally spring into spring break. This family fun park has over 15,000 square feet of inflatables and features almost twenty attractions and play areas, including a rock wall, obstacle course, dodgeball and a 250-foot-long zip rail coaster. Parents can join their children on the course or kick back and relax while the kids get some energy out.

“We have massage chairs as well as a full concession stand,” says general manager Donald Robinson. “We have a beer and wine license that also includes seltzers, so that can be a big hit with parents. And then of course kids drinks like Gatorade, water, juice boxes and food like pizza, hot dogs and chips.”

Jumpin Fun usually opens later in the day, but during school holidays like spring break, they offer extended hours. The business follows the Manatee County school calendar, so the week

of Monday March 17 through Friday March 21, Jumpin Fun will open at 11am instead of 3pm. They also often offer specials and promotional deals, so be sure to visit their website and social media before you go. Jumpin Fun Inflata Park, 7321 Trade Court, Sarasota, 941-388-5867, jfipark.com.

TREEUMPH! ADVENTURE COURSE

Kids cooped up and driving you crazy? It is not acceptable to drop them off in the woods to get some peace and quiet, but you can take them to TreeUmph! Adventure Course. This aerial outdoor adventure park offers 14 acres of obstacles up in the trees, complete with ladders, zip lines, swinging logs and all kinds of other challenges. TreeUmph! offers two kinds of passes. The Children’s APE UP Ticket is designed for climbers aged 5-8 and gives access to a more attainable obstacle course for an hour and a half. The Adventure Ticket gives

older kids and adults three hours of climb time on courses that are appropriate for people of varying skill sets and fitness levels.

“The Adventure Ticket has about 100 different obstacles over a series of courses, ranging from beginner all the way up to double extreme. There’s something for everyone.” says Park Manager Blair Johnson. “And for people who have been to us in the past, we used to do a linear course where you had to go in order. We’ve changed that over the last year and reworked our courses so now it’s more of a choose-your-own adventure.”

TreeUmph! Allows children five and up, but not every kid will embrace this kind of activity. Be sure to check out the website to learn more about the physical aspects of these courses and be sure to make a reservation ahead of time because space is limited. But for thrill-seeking kiddos, this is sure to be a hit. Treeumph! Adventure Course 21805 State Road 70 East, Bradenton, 941-322-2130, treeumph.com. LL
