BEST OF SRQ LOCAL SRQ READERS SET A NEW RECORD IN THIS 14th ANNUAL BEST OF SRQ LOCAL COMPETITION. You spoke up, and we listened. From vets and videographers to cocktails and chiropractors, BOSRQ Local is back with a brand new batch of the cities’ finest fare, favorite services, most soughtafter places and beloved businesses—a grand tally thanks to all your voting (a record-breaking 78,000 votes to be exact!). Inspired by the collaborative, immersive Robert Mapplethorpe and Patti Smith: Flowers, Poetry and Light exhibit currently residing at Marie Selby Botanical Gardens, we pay homage to this influential photographer. “Robert Mapplethorpe was the most renowned photographer of the late twentieth century,” says Jennifer O. Rominiecki, President and CEO of Marie Selby Botanical Gardens. “He is best known for his black-and-white photographs consisting of portraits, nudes, and still lifes. Many of his finest still lifes feature flowers—and that is why we at Selby Gardens felt his work should be featured within a botanical garden context for the very first time. Mapplethorpe made floral still life a significant contemporary genre, heightening the status of photography as an art form in the process.” In bringing to life the winning experiences chosen by our readers, we play with the themes of expressive lighting and irreverent black and white candids to vividly capture the “best” experiences chose by our readers. And now we are happy to present you with the leading legends, the new voices and the rising nominees of this year’s competition. Together, they continue to put Sarasota and Manatee Counties on the map—proving evolutionary and eclectic aren’t just for the big cities. Ready, set, celebrate— #BOSRQ COMPILED BY ARIEL CHATES | JACOB OGLES PROGRAM PRODUCED BY HANNAH PETERSON PHOTOGRAPHY BY WYATT KOSTYGAN | WES ROBERTS

From being a “road show”-performing in temporary spaces each night to owning and rebuilding their own theater home and headquarters at 1012 Orange Ave - this is a rags to riches story funded by those who recognize and appreciate the African American experience beautifully demonstrated in theatrical drama and treasured musicals. Life changing shows for the audience and even more importantly- the performers. BEST LOCAL VEGAN Green Zebra Café These Sarasota spots want you to get your greens. Vegan food, once the black sheep (pun intended) of the food world, has bounced back with a veggie-filled vengeance taking over tables with its fresh and flavorful flavors. Planting it’s way to Platinum is GREEN ZEBRA CAFE while PROJECT COFFEE wins Gold with green. Sensational plant-based salads secured Silver for KA PAPA CUISINE and LILA bounds into Bronze. Honorable Mention Simon’s Coffee House is another plant-forward favorite. -AC
BEST REUBEN Gecko’s Grill & Pub The regionally revered Reuben is not usually placed in the same sentence as ‘Best’ and ‘Florida’ as true sandwich connoisseurs know it’s classic roots hail from further north. The Platinum pick this year was GECKO’S GRILL & PUB while MAIN BAR grilled its way to Gold. CAFE IN THE PARK took home Silver for sensational sauerkraut and PUB 32 got Bronze by a thin slice. My absolute favorite is the coconut almond. When you remove the lid, the preview for what is in store for you is present right away. Right on the top is a circle of all the ingredients of the ice cream. In that circle is that fabulous ice cream, large pieces of almonds, coconut, and generous flakes of dark chocolate. BEST STREET/WALL ART
Sarasota Chalk Festival, Avenue of Art Gone are the days of casting a downward eye at graffiti, instead, it’s given it’s rightful glory as the quirky, colorful street art that doesn’t let a silly thing like a lack of canvas stand in their way. No painting paper? No problem! That gray building over there has a 10 foot blank space just waiting for the next great mural. SARASOTA CHALK FESTIVAL, AVENUE OF ART enchanted readers to win Platinum with the humble chalk while KAREN CHANDLER captured everyone’s attention winning Gold. And BRANDON THRIFT didn’t let Silver slip anyones mind, taking home the third place spot for his street art.–AC

FAMILY &CHILDREN BEST CHILDRENS ATTRACTION
Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium As any babysitter or parent knows all too well, kids, cute as they may be, have the attention span of an adorable little goldfish with the energy levels of a rabbit who just drank a redbull. Crayons and paper only go so far, and we’re all trying to steer clear of the dreaded iPad—but thankfully, Sarasota has a seemingly endless supply of interactive, exciting and eye-opening attractions for your tiny tykes. The Platinum playtime pick this year is MOTE MARINE LABORATORY AND AQUARIUM—overflowing with marine and oceanic adventures. THE CHILDREN’S GARDEN planted themselves in second to take Gold while MARIE SELBY BOTANICAL GARDENS DOWNTOWN SARASOTA CAMPUS bloomed into third for a Silver win. Another botantistic best, SARASOTA JUNGLE GARDENS will keep your kids occupied for hours as the Bronze winner. Anyone looking for extra adventures and attention keepers check out Honorable Mentions Big Cat Habitat, Gulf Coast Sanctuary, Suncoast Science Center / Faulhaber Fab Lab or The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art. -AC Bridget McLaughlin (on Mote Marine): Mote never fails to offer something exciting. Whether it’s our family’s favorite, the octopus, or the otters playing or rescued baby sea turtles, Mote is fun and educational. Ronni Blumenthal (on The Children’s Garden): No gadgets, no screens. Encourages imaginative play! Candy Danaher (on Marie Selby Gardens): I’ve been a volunteer at Marie Selby Botanical Gardens since 2017. I was the Saturday morning volunteer in the Kids Corner until March, 2020, when it closed because of Covid. I got to know some families who visited multiple times (sometimes every week) because it was such a good place for rain-forest themed free play involving musical instruments, books, blocks, puppets, puzzles, coloring, dress-up, and stuffed animals. Since November, 2020, I have provided information for visitors to the Gardens, including children who have questions about plants, butterflies, and everything under the sun. My favorite incident involved a mother who asked me to explain to her young son why he couldn’t live at Marie Selby Botanical Gardens. I sympathized with him. Unfortunately, the cafe and bathrooms close at 5 pm. T Duckworth (on Sarasota Jungle Gardens): I love to feed the flamingos here and just tootle around. The animal shows are great too. Hannah Gaunt: (on Mote Marine): Nice facility and they are building a brand new location. My kids love to visit. Anne Rollings (on Sarasota Jungle Gardens): When looking for an authentic Sarasota, Florida experience, we always enjoy visiting and taking friends to Jungle Gardens and supporting a local, familyowned business. Appreciating the natural beauty that is our home and giving those who might be otherwise unaware the chance to experience Florida’s flora, fauna and species in their native habitat is so important in keeping Florida’s legacy vibrant. Catherine Clouse Ferrer (on The Bishop): Our family loves The Bishop because of the WOW’s we hear from our kids as they explore. The planetarium staff have fascinating programming, the manatees are mesmerizing, the visiting exhibits always thrill, and even if we have seen the collections a million times, we still discover something new each time we go. This is much more than a home-grown attraction, The Bishop is topnotch quality, curiosity inspiring, best-in-class museum experience. Betsie Bolger (on The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art): The museum itself offers much that is intrinsically fascinating to children, especially the miniature circus, while its grounds include the Bolger Playspace, a Europeanstyle playground designed to foster creative play. Furthermore, The Ringling offers its Where Everyone Belongs (WEB) program as part of an outreach initiative that provides free Family Level memberships to underserved families. WEB Family memberships include free admission to the museum, guest passes and much more. Families engaged in the program learn how to make the most of a museum visit with their children–including how to spark children’s curiosity and find learning opportunities all around them. PATTY GIARUSSO OF LOST PET SERVICES shows in first place in our poll. JENNIFER ROMINIECKI OF MARIE SELBY BOTANICAL GARDENS grows enough support for second. PAGE KNOEBEL OF SATCHEL’S LAST RESORT inspired enough votes to win third place this year, while BILL SADLO OF THE BOYS AND GIRLS CLUBS OF SARASOTA AND DESOTO COUNTIES picks up the votes to

She and her organization are responsive at all hours of the day and night helping those who have lost pets or found animals. She has amazing reach into the community and in rescue groups when a found animal is in need of a temp foster till an owner is found which helps keep lost dogs out of our crowded shelter system. There isn’t anyone in the area that has the impact she has. Amber Bankes (on Giarusso): There was a pitbull stray dog that was reported in a large, wooded, fenced area and spotted several times over the course of a year but nobody could ever get to him. It was across
the street from my job and I came across the dog myself, not knowing the whole back story, until I reached out to Lost and Found Pets. Patty then filled me in. Thankfully, once I discovered him, I was able to work with him to build his trust and get him to eventually come out of the area he was living in. Patty offered to come meet me, to chip scan him and I actually was able to line up a home for him. She offered to cover the initial vet visit and x-rays (he had noticeable hip discomfort) so that the family could make sure all was well, without enduring the cost, while they were offering to rescue him. He has now been with his new family for over a year and turned into such a great dog. Suzanne Atwell (on Rominiecki): When one thinks of Sarasota, names like Ringling, Palmer, Crosley, and yes, Selby come to mind. These great families are not just footnotes in local history books. Their indelible footprints, and commitment to Sarasota has evolved as we have as a community. Selby is part of our identity and a valuable resource for the entire region, indeed for the State and the Nation. Dale Barshinger (on Knoebel): Page certainly has a passion to rescue dogs and cats. On top of the fund raising and the overall running of the sanctuary, she does lots of work that is normally done by volunteers. She takes animals to vet visits and is often at off site events to help setup and take down when over.

BEST 2021 COMMUNITY ACCOMPLISHMENT Legacy Trail Of all the good deeds, successes and bold moves made in the region in the last year, what stands out as the greatest accomplishment in Sarasota and Manatee counties? Views differ, and opinions come in strong. But the bulk of our readers see the extension of LEGACY TRAIL as the achievement that stands above all. Having GOV. RON DESANTIS in the Governor’s mansion also inspires pride in enough readers that the statewide leader wins second place in this poll. The #SAFEARTSSARASOTA INITIATIVE ties with THE CHALLENGE FOR CHANGING LIVES -DIAMOND CIRCLE-CHILDREN FIRST for third place. Meanwhile, BLOCKING JOE BIDEN’S VACCINE
MANDATES lands as a fourth place accomplishment this year. Thomas Morgan (Legacy Trail): It is important to support passive, non-fossil fuel based activities for tourists and locals alike. The trail, as a free-to-use-space is the kind of egalitarian project that I think our tax dollars should support. Something accessible to any and all residents and visitors. Sharon Kunkel (on #SafeArtsSarasota): The arts sector is one that has suffered terribly throughout the pandemic— with area stages completely dark for many months. I think the arts organizations that created the #SafeArtsSarasota initiative were being brave and responsible in their effort to keep artists and staff employed and keep their doors open while striving to provide the safest possible environment for patrons and the community. Bravo!
BEST 2021 BLUNDER Anti-Vaxxers
But what of the biggest screw-ups? Regardless of the votes against mandates as an accomplishment, more votes for blunder identified ANTI-VAXXERS as the community’s faux pas of the year. Yet implementing MASK MANDATES also shows up high, taking second place in our pandemic-dominated blunder list. ROUNDABOUTS, with special mention of the road at U.S. 41 near the Ringling bridge, made its traditional entry to this list in third place. Meanwhile, the SARASOTA COUNTY SCHOOLS MASK MANDATE
earned particular mention to land in Bronze. SRQ
