BASEBALL IS A MYSTIFYING SPORT IN THAT IT IS A GAME OF MORE QUESTIONS THAN ANSWERS. Atlanta Braves Manager
Brian Snitker knows that as well as anybody. A life in baseball will prepare you for the unexpected. Forty-six years in the Braves organization—first as a player and then as a minor league manager, coaching 10 different teams for the better part of 15 years, shuttling between the big leagues and the minors, finally earning the well-deserved title of full-time manager for the Braves in 2017—has taught him as much. So, when the 104-win Atlanta Braves, fresh off the best offensive regular season ever recorded, fell to the Philadelphia Phillies in the first round of the 2023 Major League Baseball (MLB) postseason, Snitker was ready for it. It stung, but it wasn’t a fatal blow. There was a new season to prepare for, and Wellen Park, home to the Braves’ spring training, was beckoning. “We’re going to approach 2024 with a lot of enthusiasm, energy and excitement. I’ve said that it was a tough way to end the year, but we take a couple months off and we come down here and get ready to do it again,” says Snitker. “It’s a great place to come and get the club ready to start the championship season.”
Spring training represents a crucial part of every major league team’s off season, and the LEFT This past December, CoolToday Park hosted “Breakfast with Brian”— a morning with Atlanta Braves Manager Brian Snitker.
Braves are no exception. Not only is spring training an essential six-week preparation period for the grind of a six-month, 162-game regular season, but it’s also the place where players from across all levels of a major league organization train, gel and make their impressions on Snitker and the rest of the big league club. For some, like 2023 National League MVP Ronald Acuna Jr., spring training is just an opportunity to get loose for the regular season. But for Snitker and the Braves’ brass, it’s a chance to take stock of the organization. “One of the beauties of spring training is that we can bring the young minor league guys in, put them in the clubhouse and they can watch the big leaguers and see how they go about it and approach the game. Then, when they get out there, they’ve experienced it on the field,” says Snitker. “It’s great for the young guys to come to camp, to be in the same clubhouse as the guys they’ve been looking up to and then get on that playing field. I think, a lot of times, they find out it’s just baseball. These guys are really good at what they do, but when they get out there, they just have to play their game.” Building a winning culture has helped lead Atlanta to six straight division titles since 2019 and a World Series win over the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2021. The standard of excellence for young players to live up to on the Atlanta Braves couldn’t possibly be higher. For the past six years, the Braves have consistently been one of the most complete and talented teams in the sport. What happens at the big league level sets an example for the rest of the farm system to follow. “We expect to win here and I think it’s easy to buy into that as players. You get guys from other organizations who sit in the dugout across the field from us and want to be a part of it,” says Snitker. “We have a great culture here. It wasn’t like that when I first got here, and it took a lot of time and a lot of effort to develop that. I applaud our general manager, Alex Anthopoulos, for the kind of players he brings in. You have to have a great makeup of guys and people that are good humans in order to have the culture that we have now.”
Spring Training at CoolToday Park There was one out in the top of the ninth inning in Game 2 of the
2023 National League Division Series when Atlanta Braves center fielder Michael Harris II made the catch of a lifetime. The Braves were down 1-0 to the visiting Philadelphia Phillies, but up 5-4 in the game with just two outs left to seal the game. Phillies slugger Nick Castellanos stood at the plate as Bryce Harper took his lead off first base. The crack of the bat and Castellanos sent a deep drive to right center, soaring further and further toward the outfield wall. Harper took off from first, expecting an extra-base hit when, suddenly, Harris leapt into view, crashing against the outfield wall and making the catch before winging the ball back to first base to double up Harper. Harris made that play in Truist Park in Atlanta, but if you squinted, it could have been CoolToday Park, located within Wellen Park (home of the Atlanta Brave’s spring training facilities). Truist and CoolToday Park share the same outfield dimensions, but they also share more than that. They share an identity— a standard of excellence that both the Braves and the local community uphold. Spring training at CoolToday Park—and the ensuing 90-acre facility of additional fields, weight rooms and player development areas —is an essential juncture for the Braves and the community at large. For the Braves, fresh off their sixth consecutive division title, it’s a chance to prepare for a long and grueling six-month, 162-game season. Although 2023 ended abruptly, with a first-round playoff loss to the Phillies, there is still more than enough to be excited about for the Braves’ 2024 campaign. Spring training will see some new faces in the Braves’ clubhouse, such as former top prospect Jarred Kelenic, who was traded for quite the hall from the Seattle Mariners and is expected to start in the outfield to seven-time all-star starting pitcher Chris Sale (acquired in a trade with the Red Sox). Even Hurston Waldrep, a right-handed pitcher out of the University of Florida and the Braves’ first-round selection in last year’s amateur draft, is slated to make an appearance. ABOVE, LEFT TO RIGHT CoolToday Park is the Spring Training home to the Atlanta Braves and plays a pivotal role in setting the team up for success in the regular season. Brian Snitker has been in the Braves organization for 46 years; first as a player and Minor League manager before becoming the manager of the big league club.
For the community, spring training is a chance to show off the hard work that happens at CoolToday Park year-round. “We’re open for 12 months a year,” says Mike Dunn, vice president of the Atlanta Braves Florida Operations. “At our peak in the spring, we employ 400 people, but year-round, we employ at least 150 daily. The Superior Pools Tomahawk Tiki Bar and Grill is open all year long, and we have trivia nights, concerts, car shows and countless other events. There’s something going on every day, making it a mecca of entertainment for the community that surrounds us.” Springtime, however, is when things really kick into gear for CoolToday Park. The 6,200-seat stadium, which can fit up to 8,000 fans, is a haven for baseball. The state-of-the-art stadium, which includes subtle nods to the other baseball stadiums across the Gulf Coast (the left-field tiki bar is similar to that of the Phillies’ BayCare Ballpark in Clearwater, and the clubhouse behind right field pays homage to the Rays’ Charlotte Sports Park) is a destination in and of itself. CoolToday Park is the newest spring training facility in the Grapefruit League, replete with a 40-foot-by-80-foot scoreboard, three additional LED displays throughout the ballpark and plaza, and numerous TVs to bring the fans the best possible viewing and entertainment experience. “I think the Atlanta Braves are unique in that they built an environment around them comparable to what The Battery is in Atlanta. CoolToday Park creates dynamics in the stadium and around it, whether it’s our plaza concert series or our car shows or future hotel and entertainment plans that are scheduled for the area,” says Dunn. “Wellen Park is rapidly growing and we’re involved in that growth because it’s a live-work-play environment. The idea that you can ride a bike, jog, walk or take a golf cart to the facility is a unique one, and not mandated by anybody.” WPL For a complete listing, visit: mlb.com/braves/tickets/spring-training 14

SPRING TRAINING TIPS A day at CoolToday Park wouldn’t be complete without sampling the various amenities the park has to offer. Spectators can purchase game-day enhancements for an extra layer of the viewing experience. Grab tickets in the Left Field Lounge in section 122 (for in-seat food service) to ensure you never miss the action, or get early on-field access with the VIP Experience. Skip the lines and get to the park early with the Line Drive Pass or gain access to luxury space with inclusive food and drinks with the LECOM Legends Pass. CoolToday Park also has several unique seating locations. Along with the Left Field Lounge, there is The Berm, a large grassy area in left field where fans can spread out; the Budweiser Bench, located in center field just underneath the scoreboard and right above the visitor’s bullpen; and the Truist Pavilion in right center field, which offers the only elevated outfield view of the game in the park. Additionally, fans have access to a bevy of food and concession options, including Salsa Supreme, Sweet Spot, Chick-fil-A, Craft Beer Bar, Fish Camp and much more. PopDawgs, which has expanded into Downtown Wellen Park, offers a gourmet take on ballpark classics like popcorn and hot dogs. “PopDawgs is part of our external catering and hospitality team,” says Dunn. “It’s an extension of what takes place in CoolToday Park during spring training, with our gourmet hot dogs and popcorn, and brings a little bit of the ballpark to the fans outside of it.” PHOTOGRAPHY BY DANIEL WAGNER | SRQ MEDIA

DAVID VALENTINO IS MAKING HIS MARK ON THE WELLEN PARK FOOD SCENE. Alongside his partners at D&D Restaurants
brother Dennis Valentino and long-time friend/business colleague Mark Costanzo, David Valentino has opened popular local eateries The Banyan House and Claw & Co. The latest restaurant concept, Acqua Pazza, opened in Downtown Wellen Park in December. Acqua Pazza, which is translated as “crazy water” in English, is a traditional Italian seafood dish characterized by its simple preparation and emphasis on fresh, high-quality ingredients. Italian cuisine is incredibly diverse, with culinary traditions, flavors and ingredients unique to different regions. Seafood dishes like acqua pazza are emblematic of the style of cooking favored in Italy’s southern and coastal regions. Valentino is excited to introduce these dishes to diners who may be more familiar with Italian-American fare.
PLAN YOUR TRIP
Acqua Pazza Coastal Italian Restaurant, 19750 Wellen Park Blvd., Unit D, Venice, 941-244-5147, acquapazzaitalian.com. Acqua Pazza is open from 11:30am–9pm Sunday through Thursday, and from 11:30am–10pm on Friday and Saturday. To see the menu or make a reservation, visit the restaurant’s website.
“For over 25 years, our group has owned a restaurant called Donato’s, which is very much in the New Jersey tradition of Italian-American cuisine. It’s a wonderful example of those restaurants which are near and dear to my heart,” says Valentino. “But with Acqua Pazza, we wanted to take a different and fresher approach to Italian cuisine, and really model ourselves more on classic Italian cooking with an emphasis on some of the coastal regions. I love lasagna and spaghetti and meatballs more than anybody, but the opportunity to come in here and do something different excited our group and our chefs. It really gave us a lot of energy.” Because Italian cuisine is so diverse, Valentino wanted to make sure
to represent cuisine from different regions. On Acqua Pazza’s menu, you can see influences from several coastal areas, including Capri, Cinque Terre, Naples, Positano and the northern Italian Riviera. But along with the coastal fare, diners will also find some more familiar favorites. “I didn’t want a menu that would intimidate guests who might not be as fully well-versed in this type of Italian cooking,” Valentino explains. “We wanted to make sure the core menu was still very approachable—that was important, too. I love the menu; I’ve read it over and over like it’s a storybook and I think it’s very well-balanced.” There are several standout dishes on the menu at Acqua Pazza. For antipasti, diners can enjoy delicate

Squash Blossoms stuffed with tangy sundried tomatoes and creamy mascarpone. Charred Octopus and Patates is another standout starter. The natural sweetness of the octopus plays beautifully with the smoky notes from the cooking process, while lemon oil and Calabrian chiles add a pop of flavor. Moving on to main courses, diners can enjoy the restaurant’s namesake dish, Acqua Pazza, which features cod, shrimp, clams, mussels and scallops in a rich seafood broth. The Grilled Swordfish Puttanesca is dressed in a savory, robust sauce packed with tomatoes, olives, capers and anchovies, while the Osso Buco pairs rich and tender braised veal shank with toothsome risotto.
The coastal influences on the menu at Acqua Pazza are also evident in the decor and ambience of the restaurant itself. The chairs are upholstered in two different shades of blue, and the large porcelain floor tiles are streaked with blues. The design is evocative of the sea in an abstract way. That effect is amplified by the subtle wave forms on the upholstered booths, and in the cascading glass droplets suspended from the organic, modern light fixtures. Linen napkins in a cheerful yellow add a bold and bright pop of color, and are reminiscent of the Meyer lemons for which Southern Italy is known. “I would describe the space as elegant and tranquil,” Valentino says. WPL
BELOW A mostly-blue palette with pops of yellow creates a soothing and serene dining room.
Inspired by Roman Cuisine Rome, the capital of Italy, has a rich culinary heritage. There are four traditional pasta dishes that are associated with Roman cuisine: amatriciana, cacio e pepe, carbonara and gricia. Though most people wouldn’t necessarily associate these dishes with coastal Italian cuisine, it was important to Valentino that they were represented at Acqua Pazza. “Because Rome is in central Italy, I think a lot of people forget that it’s only 40 minutes from the coast,” Valentino says. “So traditional Roman cooking is very inclusive in that idea of coastal Italian cuisine.” Diners can find three of those iconic Roman pasta dishes on the menu at Acqua Pazza. The Perciatelli Amatriciana features guanciale, a type of Italian cured pork made from the cheeks of a pig, in a spicy sauce made from San Marzano tomatoes. Guanciale is also a key ingredient in the Carbonara, introducing a salty, savory element to balance out a creamy sauce made with egg yolk and parmigiano reggiano. In the Cacio e Pepe, parmigiano reggiano and freshly ground black pepper come together to create a pasta dish that is simple yet rich in flavor. Utilizing high-quality ingredients is key when preparing dishes this simple and classic. In the name of authenticity, the Acqua Pazza team imports a host of products directly from Italy, including Buffalo mozzarella, parmigiano reggiano, guanciale and prosciutto di Parma. They also use imported semolina flour to prepare pasta in-house. “We do make all our own fresh pasta here, which is not something every restaurant does,” says Valentino. “It’s labor-intensive, but it’s such a special experience. Making fresh pasta is very much at the heart of what we’re doing here.”

Fall in love with three tantalizing spring cocktails. WORDS BY KATE WIGHT
GetSpring Lavender Lemonade
Tart and sweet, an ice-cold glass of lemonade is a classic refreshment on a warm spring day. At Oak & Stone, this tangy libation gets a boozy, floral twist. The Lavender Lemonade was created by an Oak & Stone bartender several years ago and quickly became a crowd favorite. The cocktail features just three ingredients: Firefly Lemonade Vodka, fresh lemon juice and a lavender simple syrup that is made in-house. But despite the simplicity of the ingredients, the drink is surprisingly layered. While the cocktail is lemon-forward, it isn’t overly sharp, and the lavender syrup adds subtle floral notes and a hint of spice. In addition to rounding out the lemon flavor, the lavender simple syrup imbues the cocktail with a beautiful purple hue. Oak & Stone’s Lavender Lemonade is served in a rocks glass over ice and topped with an edible orchid for some extra springtime style.Villani & Co., 19790 Wellen Park Blvd.

freshing lineup of spring cocktails. Say goodbye to the cold and hello to piquant citrus blends, herb-infused concoctions and blissfully botanical beverages. Get ready to kick back, relax and enjoy these handcrafted libations that embody the vibrant spirit of spring.
Paolo Maldini It’s fitting that this cocktail is named after a retired Italian football player because it has quite a kick. Smooth Herradura Tequila combines with the bitter orange tang of Aperol, an Italian aperitif. These strong flavors are mellowed out by the addition of “fluffy” grapefruit juice, which is just juice that has been aerated to create a light, frothy texture. This technique also intensifies the flavors and aromatics in each component of the drink. The final result is the Paolo Maldini, a cocktail that is fresh and bright with a hint of complexity. BELOW, TOP TO BOTTOM Go on a sweet escape with Under the Banyan Tree cocktail The Banyan House; the Hibiscus Mexican Mule from Villani & Co. offers a springtime twist on a classic cocktail.
Under the Banyan Tree The drink menu at The Banyan House is filled with creative and complex beverages, and the Under the Banyan Tree cocktail is no exception. This innovative cocktail is made with Mount Gay Rum, Fee Brothers Falernum, pineapple juice, lime juice, coconut water and a clarified milk wash. Falernum is a Caribbean syrup often used in tropical drinks, packed with flavors like lime, almond and ginger, while the Mount Gay has notes of dark chocolate, almond, banana and fresh vanilla. These ingredients give the drink a bold, complex flavor and a beautiful finish. Even the presentation makes an impact—the Under the Banyan Tree cocktail is served in a rocks glass with a single, large ice sphere and topped with dehydrated pineapple. Hibiscus Mexican Mule Originally invented in Los Angeles in the mid-twentieth century, the Moscow Mule has become a mainstay in the craft cocktail world. At Villani & Co, they’re putting a seasonal twist on this perennially popular potable. A classic Moscow Mule is made of vodka, ginger and lime juice, and served in an iconic copper mug. Villani & Co’s Hibiscus Mexican Mule features 21 Seeds Grapefruit Hibiscus Tequila, Sorel Liqueur, fresh-squeezed lime juice and housemade simple syrup, and is finished with Q Mixers Hibiscus Ginger Beer. The cocktail is served over ice in a black Mule-style mug and garnished with an edible hibiscus flower. The tequila itself is infused with real grapefruit juice, which gives the cocktail a zesty, citrus-forward flavor. This is balanced beautifully by the earthiness of the Sorel, an artisanal liqueur that features notes of Moroccan hibiscus, Nigerian ginger, Indonesian cassia, Brazilian cloves and Indonesian nutmeg. Ca’ d’Zan When John and Mable Ringling moved to their Sarasota property, they lived in a wooden house called Palms Elysian. Having amassed a great fortune in the early 1900s, the couple decided to build a home that reflected their personalities and passions. In 1926, construction was completed on the iconic Ca’ d’Zan, which means “John’s house” in the Venetian dialect, where the Ringlings lived together until Mable died in 1929. As avid travelers who adored Italy (and Venice, in particular), the mansion was designed in the Mediterranean Revival style. The architecture and decor pay tribute to the Ringlings’ love of the Gilded Age period, but also reflect the popular Art Deco style of the 1920s. For total immersion into the Ringlings’ world, take the Ca’ d’Zan Experience Tour, which grants you access to the majority of rooms in the house, including the secret ones. Your guide encourages you to follow in the footsteps of the Ringlings’ guests, recounting the long journey many would have taken just to reach Sarasota in the early 1900s. The tour invites you to imagine a typical evening full of eating, dancing, drinking and merriment along with John and Mable’s everyday lives in their home.

VENICE IS WELL-KNOWN FOR ITS CHARMING, OLD-TIME FEEL and the treasure trove of fossilized shark teeth and colorful
shells hiding along the city’s string of exquisite beaches. But what lies beneath the sugary, white sand surface is the rich history of a city that persevered through economic ups and downs to become a place that feels frozen in time.
To say it took a village to put Venice on the map is not only a tongue twister, but it’s also a vast understatement and the reason Harry Klinkhamer, historical resources manager for the city, jokingly refers to it as “the city with nine lives.” The development began with Bertha Honore Palmer in the early 1900s, followed by Dr. Fred Albee, and then the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers. The city was virtually abandoned during the Great Depression but was eventually repopulated by the Kentucky Military Institution, the United States Army, and the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus. “The community has been fortunate that there have been these unusual instances that fell into their lap and really helped the city survive and then thrive,” Klinkhamer says. What makes Venice special is the vision that city planner John Nolen had for the city. Before becoming America’s first city planner, Nolen worked in administration. After reading a book by Charles Eliot entitled Landscape Architecture at the age of 34, Nolen was inspired to go back to school at Harvard to obtain a degree in landscape architecture. Through his studies, Nolen became passionate about a rapidly growing phenomenon in England called the garden city movement—an interest that would be evident in his plan for Venice. “The movement’s idea was to create small, self-contained hamlets surrounded by greenspace. The importance was that communities had access to open space because they were starting to understand the health value of people being able to get fresh air, away from the pollution of the Industrial Revolution,” Klinkhamer adds. This led Nolen to design four compact, designated greenspaces throughout the city called “pocket parks” for two primary reasons: the first being a place for the community to gather and the second serving as walkable links to the beach for residents.
32

While the parks were mostly forgotten and abandoned during the Great Depression, the city has been making strides since the early 2010s to preserve and renovate the parks for their intended purpose, giving the city access to communal spaces. In 2017, the city identified each park by giving them names, now calling them Granada, Madrid, Harbor and Milan Nolen Greens. The city plans to launch a beautification campaign in 2026 with the goal of aesthetically improving the parks for community members—making the parks even more ideal places for gathering, passing through on the way to the beach or just getting some fresh air. The genuine mindfulness for the community and the access to greenspace are what set Nolen’s vision for Venice apart from that of many modern city planners. In today’s world, finding a place that cultivates a strong sense of community and promotes healthy, peaceful living is rare. “What Nolen and his pocket parks represent is a time when the emphasis was on a more humanistic scale,” Klinkhamer explains. “There are places in the city, such as the pocket parks, where you could interact with your neighbors. People see that Venice is very desirable because it is a very walkable, quaint, livable and humanistic community. There are still people out there looking for that.” WPL For more information, visit visitvenicefl.org.

THE COMPANY WAS STARTED IN 2008 BY DANA KLEIN, a single mom who was trying to provide a better life for her children
during the recession. She began buying and reselling jewelry at local flea markets, but quickly realized—through selling jewelry to other stylish women in the area and developing personal relationships with them—that she had built a strong community. She opened the first DanaTyler store in Naples to try and cultivate an even larger community of women through the power of fashion. Klein’s intuitive leadership has expanded the business that began in a flea market to having seven bustling locations across Southwest Florida. 34

What makes the company stand out is its immense variety of styles and price points. “Our goal at DanaTyler is to offer quality jewelry that is at an affordable price point for everyone. That’s why, when you walk into the store, you will see pieces ranging from $19.99 to $1,500, depending on which store you go to,” says Chief Operating Officer Kristina Nakovska Carrillo. “Jewelry should be a part of our everyday lives, not just reserved for special occasions. It’s about being that fashionable friend that accompanies us through life’s adventures.” Above all, DanaTyler strives to create a community of women who lift each other up. The team offers styling advice and friendly faces as soon as clients walk through the double doors. At the stores, women gather and chat, ask for advice, offer tips and enjoy laughter, nurturing an environment that echoes sisterhood and girl power. The DanaTyler company as a whole embodies female empowerment, with the entire team being composed of women who range in age from 21 to 82. DanaTyler offers not only jewelry but a way for women to celebrate life daily, express themselves and exude the essence of confidence through timeless style. Three design experts share tips on how to bring the Wellen Park aesthetic to life in your own home. WORDS BY KATE WIGHT
IN RECENT YEARS, WELLEN PARK HAS BECOME ONE OF THE MOST DESIRABLE
AREAS to live in Southwest Florida. Residents of all ages are drawn to
the incredible restaurants and shopping, walkable downtown area, parks and trails, and of course, the beautiful homes. “Wellen Park is the epitome of Florida living,” says Marnee Eipel, a regional vice president at Builders Design. “Despite there being so much new in the community, it still embraces the old Florida vibe that everyone knows and loves. There truly is something for everyone.” “The vibe is casual but trendy,” says Lisa White, a senior designer at Pulte Interiors. “The area gives you a modern, coastal feel.” Eipel and White have played a large part in developing and exploring the Wellen Park aesthetic. Eipel and the Builders Design team have designed model homes in the Everly neighborhood, while White recently designed and installed two model homes in the Lakespur neighborhood. Along with Adnilem Barrera, senior designer at Clive Daniel Home, Eipel and White shared some spring decorating tips to help homeowners capture Wellen Park’s unique style.

Find the Right Fabrics and Finishes for Your Lifestyle One of the elements that draws people to Wellen Park is the easy access to outdoor recreation. With many residents embracing the indoor-outdoor lifestyle, it’s important to find fabrics and finishes that hold up to wear and tear. “Since Wellen Park is a community for all ages and even your pets, look for fabrics that are easy to clean,” says Barrera, whose work includes the amenity center in the Everly neighborhood. In addition to choosing performance fabrics, Barrera encourages homeowners to be thoughtful when selecting their flooring. This applies to materials and colors.“Depending on your budget, you can go with a ceramic tile that has a stone look or a wood look, or with a luxury vinyl plank. Both are very durable,” Barrera explains. “What I’ve seen through the years is that dark floors will show dirt extremely quickly—and, with white floors, the ground will get dirty pretty fast—so they’re hard to maintain on both ends. If you go too white or too dark on your floors, you get that issue of not looking clean every day. So you want to be in the middle.”

Draw Inspiration From Nature “One must-have in Wellen Park design is bringing the outdoors inside. We do this by selecting color palettes that are reminiscent of nature,” Eipel says. “One of our favorite nature-inspired palettes features toned-down pastels in blue and green colorways, paired with warm neutrals and bleached wood tones. This palette exudes the serenity of a perfect beach day.” Eipel also advises homeowners to bring the outside indoors in a more literal fashion, by using foliage as an accessory. “Fresh flowers and collected greenery are wonderful ways to bring life into your home, whether it’s in the form of a centerpiece on your kitchen island or a large floor plant as a focal point in your living room,” she explains. “Plants are nature’s jewelry, and thus are a timeless accessory in home design.”
Play with Different Textures In interior design, incorporating various textures can enhance the overall visual and tactile appeal of a space by creating depth and dimension. “Adding layers of texture is easily accomplished with throw pillows, window treatments and art,” White says. “Wallpaper with a woven texture is also a great way to add some dimension to a space while tying in that coastal, modern feel.”
To learn more about these Wellen Park designers and their work, visit their websites: Builders Design at buildersdesign.com, Clive Daniel Home at clivedaniel.com and Pulte Interiors at pulte.com/design.
Don’t be Afraid to Give Small Spaces Big Style As a general rule, designers tend to stick to neutral colors in larger living areas. But smaller rooms can be great places to flex your creativity. “A powder room is a great place to install wallpaper because it adds so much interest to a small space,” says Eipel. “In my opinion, the perfect Wellen Park wallpaper might feature luxe, oversized palms as a nod to the tropical lifestyle.” 40

Run
for Fun
Wellen Park and surrounding areas offer an ideal and picturesque environment for running. WORDS BY BARBIE HEIT FITNESS FADS MAY COME AND GO, BUT RUNNING IS ONE FORM OF EXERCISE THAT HAS STOOD THE TEST OF TIME. Perhaps it’s
because it can be done anywhere without special equipment, or maybe it’s due to the multitude of health benefits it provides. As a weight-bearing exercise, running helps to build strong bones and strengthen muscles. It can improve your cardiovascular health, burn calories and help you maintain a healthy weight. Aside from the physical benefits, running is often credited with improving emotional well-being, as well as promoting an elevated mood, more energy and better sleep. This spring, join the fun and maybe even get a little competitive with some of the running opportunities in and around Wellen Park. How should you prepare for these races? First and foremost, be sure to get a clean bill of health before beginning any physical training routine. When you’re ready to start, try combining walking with running and gradually increase your mileage with each outing. To avoid injury, add some stretching to your routine and try to incorporate strength-building exercises. Finally, try running with friends or family members and have fun! 66

The North Port Symphony has been sharing music in the community for 40 years. WORDS BY BARBIE HEIT
THE MAIN MISSION OF THE NORTH PORT SYMPHONY IS TO SHARE THE JOY OF MUSIC. The way the organization does that, according to Executive Director Michael Alegria (now in his fifth season in the role) is through education programs. “Back in the 1990s, before we rebranded to become the North Port Symphony, we were known as the North Port Orchestra, and we provided music education in our town,” says Alegria. “We would actually go to the elementary schools in North Port and teach music to the students before there were full-time music teachers. This is something that we are really striving to bring back, going back to our roots and being a re70

source for local music education.” The North Port Symphony is an all-volunteer orchestra made up of advanced amateur, professional and student musicians who donate their time to playing and performing classical, contemporary and popular music. The Symphony produces five (often soldout) concerts per year at the North Port Performing Arts Center, which is the second-largest theater in Sarasota County. This season, the Symphony will produce two very exciting performances. The Mendelssohn, Motown and More concert on February 25 will be an eclectic mix of classical and pop music, and one that shouldn’t be missed, according to

About Us The North Port Symphony was founded in 1983 by a handful of local residents who were interested in playing music for their own pleasure as well as for the community. St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church served as the Symphony’s home until November of 2001 when we moved to our current home in the Music Suite adjacent to the Performing Arts Center on the North Port High School Campus. Programs include classical, contemporary and popular music.

Alegria. In March, the Symphony will perform Instant Concert with some of the most popular orchestral works of all time. “The music will be instantly recognizable, maybe from a TV commercial that you’ve seen or just something that permeates throughout society that we’ve heard a million times but didn’t know the name of,” Alegria says. “Our shows are always entertaining and something that everyone can connect with, and that’s just a big goal of ours—to make sure everyone has that sense of belonging. I think what makes it really special is that the members of our orchestra are members of our community, and people enjoy that. They love to come see their neighbors playing together.” Alegria adds that the North Port Symphony has affordable pricing, with first-floor seats selling at only $20 and balcony seats at $25. “Our conductor is Artistic Director Robert Romanski. He’s a big draw for people to come see the Symphony,” says Alegria. “He is very wellknown in the music community, especially in the Tampa Bay Area region, and was once referred to by the mayor of Clearwater as ‘the city’s conductor.’ This is his 12th season with us, and he is loved by the musicians and the audience as well.”

Also in March, the Symphony will be hosting a gala to celebrate 40 years in North Port, with fundraising efforts going specifically toward education and community outreach endeavors. “We want to be able to increase our community outreach so we can do more than just sell tickets to a concert. We want to revitalize the education program that we had back in the 1980s and 1990s; it got lost for a little bit when we got into the early 2000s,” says Alegria. “We’ve given over $65,000 worth of student scholarships over our history, but that’s not enough. There are over 5,000 elementary music students in North Port and they deserve all of the best experiences possible. As the community orchestra, we need to be able to give them that kind of education. We want to make people aware of the power of music education. It’s more than just learning to play an instrument. It’s learning about time, patience and how to work intelligently—how to be passionate about something bigger than ourselves and learning to be the best future leaders of our community.” The North Port Symphony gala will take place on March 2 at the Heron Creek Golf and Country Club. Welcoming A New Puppy
Set your new puppy up for success. WORDS BY EMMA DANNENFELSER
OVER THE COURSE OF THEIR ALL-TOO-SHORT LIVES, DOGS BECOME A PART OF THE FAMILY. And, for many people, the bond
formed with a beloved pet is one that is unforgettable. They teach us unconditional love and what it means to be loyal through thick and thin. While bringing a new puppy into the family can be an exciting time, it can also be a time full of questions, anxiety and mayhem. At West Villages Animal Clinic in Wellen Park, Dr. Andrea Daniels aims to squash any first-time pup parent fears with simple, effective tips that will help your puppy become a confident and healthy member of your family. 74

THE MOST OBVIOUS, yet most important tip for raising a well-rounded dog is setting your pet up for success by following the proper vaccine and deworming schedule, as well as finding a veterinarian that is dedicated to your pet’s health. Ideally, between the first two to four months of its life, a puppy will receive the two “core” shots that Dr. Daniels always recommends to prevent DHLPP (distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis, parvo and parainfluenza) and rabies. Along with scheduling the “core” shots and any other “non-core” shots that might be necessary, depending on a dog’s lifestyle, frequently deworming your new puppy is necessary (since puppies will lose their mother’s immunity to these diseases throughout the first few months of their lives). Choosing the correct time to spay or neuter a puppy based on their breed and health history—as well as developing a plan for 76

flea, tick and heartworm prevention—is something a trustworthy veterinarian will make clear and simple. Lastly, investing in pet health insurance early on is one way to keep any unnecessary stress out of sight and out of mind. Dr. Daniels says her top two recommended providers are Embrace and Pets Best. When it comes to raising a puppy with a great attitude and even better people skills, socialization is a major key. “Dogs start forming neurological connections when they are puppies. Their brains are like plastic; they’re malleable and impressionable. We used to tell people to pretty much quarantine puppies, because they’re babies and they can get sick if they’re exposed to viruses, which they still can. But now we know that what they’re exposed to between ages eight and 16 weeks provides the foundation for their personality and how they interact with the world as adults,” says
Together W E L L E N PA R K L I V I N G | S P R I N G 2 0 2 4
Dr. Daniels. “So I always recommend that clients set up playdates with other healthy, vaccinated dogs. I still do not recommend dog parks or dog beaches when they’re babies, but controlled playing is very important.” Working on desensitizing a puppy to having their nails, ears and teeth cleaned can also play a vital role in preparing a young dog for getting groomed or examined in the future without any qualms. Last, but certainly not least, is the importance of choosing a nutritious diet for your new puppy. Dr. Daniels recommends that puppies be given a specific “baby” diet, full of the calcium and phosphorus they need to grow. The perfect diet is one that has an Association of American Feed Control Officials certification, is backed by thorough research and is not grain-free.
