A COMMUNITY IS A PLACE WHERE PEOPLE COME TOGETHER AND TRULY ENJOY THE AREA WHERE THEY LIVE. Rick Severance, the developer behind Wellen Park, and his team are thoughtful about creating a community where outdoor recreation and wellness are easily accessible to residents. Severance shares some insights into existing outdoor recreational activities residents can partake in and gives a sneak peek at some exciting new projects.
Grand Adventures on the Lake
Located in the heart of Downtown Wellen Park, the 80-acre Grand Lake offers a plethora of activities for people of all ages. It is framed by a three-mile multimodal pathway with incredible views of the lake and surrounding wetlands. “I run the trail around the lake three times a week, and what I find so amazing is that it’s not just for one purpose or one demographic,” Severance says. “It’s very multigenerational. I really love seeing that people are able to engage with wellness here at every age.”
It shouldn’t come as a surprise that the area surrounding Grand Lake is popular with so many different people. A portion of the Grand Lake Trail is paved in smooth concrete, so it’s easy for people to navigate whether they’re walking, running, cycling, or scootering. The areas around wetlands and preserves are shell pathways to respect and protect these natural areas. Like the other paths in the Wellen Park trail system, this trail is 12 feet wide so it can easily be shared by people traversing in opposite directions. While there is plenty to keep you occupied on dry land, there are also many recreational opportunities in the lake itself.
It’s common to find people enjoying Grand Lake in a variety of vessels, including stand-up paddleboards, kayaks, paddle boats and electric boats. Because of emissions restrictions, gas-powered boats aren’t available for use in Grand Lake, which has the positive side effect of preserving the peaceful and quiet environment. Local businesses like Kind Vibes Outfitters, located steps from Grand Lake, can help you get set up with the right equipment for a day on the water.
When you talk to local business owners, you’ll hear that what attracted them to the area was that it was a perfectly-sized, walkable community. For Severance, outdoor recreation is really just one aspect of wellness. An emotional connection and a sense of community is also important.
“When talking about wellness, it’s important to incorporate well-being,” Severance says. “Well-being is as much about the spiritual aspect of health. Well-being can refer to your aura or your ethos or your peace of mind. Sometimes we need to slow down and have an environment where we can really focus on our well-being—the downtown area and certainly the lake and the trail can do that.” WPL
A Relaxing Place to Land
If you look across Grand Lake from Downtown Wellen Park, you’ll see the newly-finished fishing pier known as The Landing, which features a large shade structure with built-in bench seating for visitors to kick back, relax and stay shielded from the sun. “The intent of The Landing was to create a place of respite,” says Severance. “If you’re on a walk or run, it’s a perfect kind of halfway place where you can take a rest and relax a little bit. It also provides a spot to get out of the sun if you’re doing a really heavy day of fishing out there.” While there is already a kayak launch in Downtown Wellen Park near Kind Vibes Outfitters, The Landing houses a secondary one as well. If you’re feeling hot and tired during a day of kayaking, you can tie up your vessel and enjoy nature from a protected, shady spot. The Landing serves an important purpose, but it was also designed with aesthetics in mind. “I see it as almost this beacon, because of the way it’s backlit against the wetland,” Severance says. “It shows the depth of the lake at night which for me is really important. Let’s be honest: water is magic, and water at night is especially magic. I really wanted it to visually create depth to the lake, but I also wanted it to serve a functional purpose.” WPL

Harvest Time is Near
Thoughtfully designing Wellen Park from the beginning has been a collaboration— Severance works with partners and residents to look for new ways to benefit the community. One upcoming project he’s particularly excited about is the Harvest Community Garden. The garden will be located close to downtown so it is easily accessible to residents in multiple neighborhoods. “I have done two other community gardens, but nothing ever of this scale,” says Severance.
Initially, the Harvest Community Garden will feature 80 individually-irrigated gardening plots for residents to use. The design allows for the space to grow, so if the demand is high the site could eventually hold as many as 150 plots. There are a number of plots that are designed for people with limited mobility or physical disabilities.
These plots are elevated and can accommodate a chair underneath them. It’s just one more way Severance is working to address the needs of every member of the community. Severance envisions the Harvest Community Garden as another destination for multiple generations. He’s had conversations with the local charter school about the possibility of the garden serving as an outdoor classroom space for students. There is also a designated area that residents will be able to reserve for events including small weddings and farm-to-table dinners. Looking forward, Severance hopes that the community garden will be able to integrate with other community amenities. On Sundays, Wellen Park residents have been enjoying the newlylaunched Fresh Harvest Farmers Market.

The Wellen Park team is exploring the idea of setting up Harvest Community Garden as a vendor at the market, so that produce grown in the individual plots can be more easily shared with neighbors and members of the community. There will be a modest fee to reserve a plot at the community garden to cover expenses, but the amount has yet to be determined. In addition to holding a space, the nominal fee will also include some great perks.
“We will have professional management as part of the community garden, which I think is great,” Severance says. “Our current Ranch Manager Jeremy Watters, who has been managing the 11,000 acres here for over ten years, will also oversee the garden. So we have someone who knows the land and has an agricultural background here to help.” Severance anticipates that they’ll be breaking ground on the Harvest Community Garden this fall. While there isn’t a firm construction timeline in place yet, the hope is that it will be finished in time for the spring growing season. WPL
Blazing a New Trail
Wellen Park is already home to a series of interconnected trails, and another one is on the horizon. Extending from the Playmore district all the way to the county line, the Oakheart Trail will be the single largest nature-abutting trail in Wellen Park at over four miles long. Oakheart will be an out-and-back destination trail, so there will be amenities like dedicated parking, a trailhead and restrooms. There will also be mile markers as well as interpretive signage along the length of the trail talking about the flora and fauna in the area. In addition to offering close-up views of scenic lakes and retained wetlands, the Oakheart Trail will play an integral role in the functioning of the community. “One great thing this trail does is it helps in two of our newest neighborhoods for residents to get their kids to school,” Severance says. A K-12 school is planned for the area, and the Oakheart Trail will provide bicycle and golf cart access. This contributes to the wellness of the community by giving parents the opportunity to skip long car lines in favor of taking a more eco-friendly route to school. “We were very purposeful in terms of the connection points of that trail to the school and making sure it was safe, navigable, but also multimodal,” says Severance. Like the community garden, the construction for the Oakheart Trail is slated to begin this fall. However, because this project is much larger in scope, it will likely take more than twelve months until it is fully completed. “Anything we feel like is going to enhance the living experience within Wellen Park, we want to do. We see that making investments in little things like the nuances of this trail and the community garden and even The Landing really adds up,” Severance concludes. “They’re small things to some people, but collectively they become part of the fabric and why the community is so special. And so for me, that’s what’s important. It’s not just one thing, it’s the collective of everything that makes a community.” WPL

Claw & Co. brings the genuine New England seafood experience to Wellen Park
WORDS BY KATE WIGHT
DAVID VALENTINO IS NO STRANGER TO OPENING NEW RESTAURANTS. D&D Restaurants, which he runs with his brother Dennis Valentino and their partner Mark Costanzo, owns several thriving restaurant brands in southwest Florida, including Donato’s Italian Restaurant, Bocca Lupo Coal Fired Pizza and Prime Serious Steak. The team is also responsible for The Banyan House restaurant in Downtown Wellen Park, which has quickly become a favorite among local foodies. Their latest project, Claw & Co., is something of a love letter to their wives and to New England seafood.

The Maine
Roll,
“We’re all married to New Englanders, and they have teased us that they felt underrepresented,” Valentino laughs. The group began workshopping the idea of opening a restaurant specializing in New England seafood, going as far as planning menus and scouting locations. Still, the concept hadn’t yet fully crystallized. They also went on a research trip to Maine and Massachusetts to sample the cuisine.
“It was research, but it was also a great excuse to eat a lot of lobster rolls and chug chowder,” Valentino admits. Then, while they were in the process of opening The Banyan House, they were approached about the possibility of opening another restaurant in The Yard in downtown Wellen Park. The Yard is a cool, funky dining destination, hosting three fast-casual eateries in buildings constructed out of retrofitted shipping containers. It immediately felt like the perfect home for their New England seafood concept.
Originally, Valentino and his partners had envisioned Claw & Co. as a traditional sit-down restaurant. But because the shipping containers
have small kitchens and no indoor seating, they opted to simplify their original menu. However, nothing was lost in this reimagining. If anything, their stripped-down menu allowed them to really highlight New England seafood at its best.
“People have some very definitive ideas about what New England seafood should taste like,” Valentino says. “The authenticity is in the simplicity. Our approach is all about sourcing excellent product and then letting it shine.”
To find the best products, Valentino turned to Luigi Pacelli who currently manages Donato’s Italian Restaurant and will soon helm D&D’s next restaurant, Acqua Pazza. Pacelli managed a group of restaurants in Bar Harbor, Maine, and was able to connect Valentino with suppliers in places like Portland and Mount Desert Island. The majority of the products used at Claw & Co. come from New England, from the fresh, unsalted lobster meat to the classic split-top rolls. Pacelli also developed the recipe for the New England-style clam chowder on the Claw & Co. menu.

In addition to the creamy clam chowder with bacon and potato, the menu at Claw & Co. features New England staples including fried clam strips, lobster rolls and whole belly clams. Authenticity is a common theme throughout the menu. The fish and chips are made from haddock, in true New England style, and the onion rings are thinly sliced. The menu is already receiving approval from New Englanders who have relocated to the Wellen Park area. “This is a tough crowd. These people know their seafood,” Valentino says. “They know what they want. They want it to be plentiful. They want it to be simple. They want the ingredients to shine through. So far, the response has been great.” WPL
Some Like it Hot (But Others Prefer it Cold)
When it comes to New England seafood dishes, lobster rolls are undeniably a regional classic. There are two main variations on this iconic dish: Connecticut-style and Maine-style. Because lobster roll aficionados tend to have a strong affinity for their preferred style, Claw & Co. features both styles on their menu. The Connecticut Lobster Roll at Claw & Co. is the exemplification of simplicity. Tender, juicy lobster meat is dressed with clarified butter and served warm on a toasted, New England-style brioche bun. If you’re looking for something cooler and more refreshing, opt instead for the Maine Lobster Roll. Here, the lobster is lightly dressed in homemade mayonnaise, lemon juice and finely-shaved celery and served cold on the same split-top brioche bun. Even though the two dishes share the same primary ingredients, each one has a truly distinct identity.

Bold Flavors
IF YOU’VE EVER TRIED COOKING OR BAKING, you know that culinary exploration is as much of a science as it is an art. It’s fitting then, that Kurt Drake and Steve Garrahan, the cofounders of Bright Ice Scoop Shop have extensive scientific backgrounds. “I was in architecture and construction management, while Steve was in aerospace engineering,” Drake explains. “We got to the point where we wanted to do something a little more entrepreneurial, and we knew we wanted it to be food-related.”

FlavorForward Favorites at Bright Ice
“We like bold flavor, so we made the decision that was going to be our approach,” says Drake. But it can be challenging to develop strong flavors when using all-natural ingredients. Here’s how the team at Bright Ice brings out the best flavors in some of their more eclectic offerings.
Caramelized Bananas with Peanut Butter and Honey
Creating this decadent treat is something of a waiting game. Pounds of bananas sit in the kitchen for as much as two weeks until they are incredibly ripe. Once they’ve reached peak ripeness, they’re roasted in the oven with brown sugar and cinnamon to bring out the intensity before being incorporated into the ice cream base. Swirls of peanut butter honey add texture and complexity to the rich banana base.
Roasted Strawberries with Brown Sugar and Balsamic
Balsamic vinegar may seem like an unusual ice cream ingredient, but there’s sound scientific reasoning for its presence here. It’s extraordinarily difficult to get a strong strawberry flavor without turning to artificial flavoring. Adding balsamic vinegar to the berries brings out their tartness and acidity while putting brown sugar in the mix enhances their natural sweetness. When these three ingredients are roasted together, the intensity of the strawberry is dialed up, to create an ice cream that is stunningly fruit-forward.
Lemon with Crystallized Ginger
Creating a lemon ice cream is trickier than you might think, as dairy can quickly curdle with the addition of citrus juice. At Bright Ice, they make a homemade lemon curd that is carefully incorporated into the ice cream base. The result is a sweet yet tangy ice cream that is livened up even more by spicy bits of crystallized ginger.

INSPIRATION STRUCK ONE DAY WHEN DRAKE TOOK HIS KIDS OUT FOR A FROZEN TREAT ON THE LAST DAY OF SCHOOL. “The product was very unnatural,” Drake says. “There were a lot of syrups with a lot of dyes in them, and I just thought, ‘We can do better’.”
Three years ago, Drake and Garrahan opened the first Bright Ice location in St. Petersburg. Their small-batch, super-premium ice cream quickly developed a fanatical following. Customers loved their all-natural ingredients and innovative flavors. Drake and Garrahan have already gone on to open three more Bright Ice locations, including the newest one in Downtown Wellen Park. Quality is of paramount importance to Drake and Garrahan. Not only is the ice cream at Bright Ice all made in-house, but so are the ingredients that go into it. For example, their Key Lime Pie ice cream gets texture from pieces of homemade graham cracker crust. Likewise, their Sprinkles and Cream flavor features pieces of house-made white chocolate chip blondies. Even the caramel in their Sea Salt Caramel ice cream is made in-house.
While the Bright Ice team wants to give customers plenty of variety, they also don’t want to overextend themselves and reduce the quality of the ice cream. They’ve found a balance by carrying 17 flavors on a regular basis but adding some variety with rotating seasonal flavors. Bright Ice also offers three non-dairy options that are oat milk-based. WPL

Turtle Tips
From April to November, sea turtle season is in full swing. “Sea turtles nest on sandy beaches all over the world,” says Melissa Macksey, Conservation Manager for Mote’s Sea Turtle Conservation and Research Program. While loggerhead, green, Kemp’s ridley, leatherback and hawksbill sea turtles nest along Florida’s coasts, loggerhead and green sea turtles are the most common species in the Sarasota area. Since 1982, Mote has made tireless efforts to study and protect local sea turtles populations. Macksey recommends that beachgoers who come across nesting sea turtles or hatchlings keep a respectful distance from these creatures, keep their lights off so as not to confuse them as they head out to sea and fill in holes that might trap baby turtles on their way to the ocean. Anyone who sees a sea turtle in danger or in need of help can reach out to Mote’s stranded sea turtle hotline at 888-345-2335.

Become a biologist for a day with the Sea Life Encounter Cruise from Sarasota Bay Explorers. A Mote partner, this tour company takes visitors on a marine adventure across the city’s waters and shores. On the twohour-long cruise, a biologist will educate guests on local wildlife and the importance of protecting it. While most of the experience occurs aboard the boat, guests can participate in a 10-15 minute nature walk on Edwards Island. “We talk about how the bay is an estuary where freshwater and saltwater mix, creating a nursery for fish and other creatures,” says Lead Biologist Amanda Mohammed. Visitors also learn about the Marine Mammal Protection Act and how to monitor and change their behavior to interfere as little as possible with animals like manatees and dolphins. At the end of the cruise, the biologists throw in a trawling net to capture fish, crabs and other critters living in the seagrass meadows through which the boat travels. “We’re the only tour company in Sarasota that has a permit to use trawling nets,” adds Mohammed. After just a few minutes, the biologists pull up the nets and place the animals caught there into tanks on the boat for visitors to see. Sea horses, puffer fish, sea urchins and small fish greet guests, then are returned to the water, enticing visitors to protect our marine mascots and their home. Customers also enjoy chowing down on the chicken wings, which the chefs steam and then fry in peanut oil. Tasty sauces like spicy boom boom sauce, homemade ranch and blue cheese take these crispy morsels to the next level. “It’s a really nice setting,” adds Sisler, “and the food speaks for itself.” New Pass Grill, 1505 Ken Thompson Pkwy., Sarasota, newpassgrill.com.

CARAVEL EVERLY
Innovation creates an exceptional, statement-making style with staying power intended to last a lifetime. This belief is truly exemplified in the Caravel –Lee Wetherington Homes’ brand-new custom floor plan design, created in collaboration with BSB Design – which will be available to build on breathtaking estate homesites in Everly at Wellen Park. With 3,067 square feet of living space and over 4,600 square feet under roof, the Caravel was developed with an acute focus on the needs and aspirations of today’s homebuyers. Upon entry to the foyer, showcasing impeccable 12-foot ceilings, a flexible floor plan perfectly blends spaces for living, working and entertainment. Not only does the Caravel feature three bedrooms, three ensuite bathrooms, a secluded study, an open great room and kitchen, a bonus room and a pool bathroom, but a laundry room directly accessible from the primary suite – and ingeniously designed with a pass through from the primary bathroom. Fully embrace oneness with Florida’s natural scenery, accentuated by the Caravel’s sprawling 665-square foot outdoor living area. Interior and exterior spaces seamlessly intertwine. Broad, pocket sliding glass doors in the great room and disappearing glass doors in dining and bonus rooms are simply what separates homeowners from a beautiful sunset or cool breeze. Augmented Reality adds an entirely new dimension to Downtown Wellen Park.
WORDS BY DYLAN CAMPBELL
“THIS IS SOMETHING THAT I’VE BEEN PASSIONATE ABOUT SINCE I WAS A KID PLAYING VIDEO GAMES,” says Anthony DeBono III, founder of d3 Creative Studio. “In my previous career, I spent 10 years working in interior design for corporate retail companies. What I realized is that I absolutely loved the ability to take a project and display it in a finished state–the excitement and energy in the room when people saw it was just infectious.”
context to the existing structures and areas of Downtown Wellen, grounding homeowners/visitors in a sense of place within their community. Throughout Downtown Wellen, users will be able to access seven different AR experiences through their cell phones, each highlighting a different aspect of the Downtown Wellen environment.
Debono is talking about the use of Augmented Reality or AR to create an immersive experience that enhances one’s view of a real-world environment. “d3 Creative Studio was founded almost 10 years ago with a focus on providing master plan community developers and master plan high-rise developers with rendering animation and immersive 3D content. We started our first AR project in 2015 before we had some of the technologies we had now,“ says Debono. “Essentially, we’d create an animation or series of renderings for a project–we’d take renderings we’d made for a video, repurpose it and push it into this new medium. It was a pretty dynamic way to show a project without having the physical constraints of a sales center.”
This spring, d3 Creative Studio is bringing this technology to Downtown Wellen, to create a location-based augmented reality experience for all to enjoy. The experience, which is webbased and will operate through your cell phone–meaning no pesky apps to download–will add
“We’ve spent the last five to six months brainstorming through multiple discovery sessions and visits on-site to understand that this is a location-based augmented reality experience. We’ve identified seven key areas for this downtown area to tell the story behind the meaning of all the architecture that you’re seeing and why it matters,” says DeBono. “There will be some signage around that will point users in the direction of an experience, with a visual marker that will indicate they can learn more about the experience. The idea is to create something that’s so shareable that people will see what others are doing and want to check that out for themselves. We want to cater to all age ranges, whether it’s a grandparent sitting at the playground with their grandkids or young children, we want it to appeal to everyone.”
Amongst the seven different experiences, which range from transporting users to the activities on Downtown Wellen’s Grand Lake to being surrounded by a carnival of virtual Florida butterflies, are touchpoints that reflect on the ethos of the Wellen Park development team.
One of which is a tribute to Wellen Park’s Tree Conservation and Relocation Program, to tell the story of the preservation of these trees in Downtown Wellen. “People forget that Florida is a beautiful place,” says DeBono. “By telling the story of how Wellen Park worked to relocate and keep these 100-year oak trees that line the community, we are showing why sustainability is so important.” WPL

FOR JEROME FLETCHER, CITY MANAGER OF NORTH PORT, LIFE IS ALL ABOUT BALANCE. Moving 1,000 miles from Maryland to North Port to find the perfect place to raise his family? Balance. Managing the growth of one of the fastest growing cities in the nation? Balance. Juggling the future need of affordable housing with the immediate issue of Hurricane Ian relief? You guessed it, it’s all about balance.

BALANCE
IS KEY FOR FLETCHER,
who came into the position in October 2021. As City Manager, Fletcher serves as the acting arm of North Port’s City Commission–a legislative body made up of five elected members who are empowered to make decisions to help chart North Port’s future. “As City Manager, I’m responsible for the day-to-day administration and activities of the city from making sure that we take care of all of North Port’s public works and utilities, the internal departments of HR, budget, finance and all the different administrative arms of the city,” says Fletcher. “I work at the pleasure and service of the five-member board, who through a strategic plan set a policy direction, outline the outcome they want to achieve and then we go out and do it/achieve it.”
Fletcher came to North Port from the Washington DC metro area, where he spent nine years working in various public service positions for city, county, state and federal agencies. “The decision to come here boiled down to the quality of life,” says Fletcher. “In Northern Virginia, you’re dealing with bumper to bumper traffic and a two hour commute to work every day whereas here you have time to think, to breathe, to wrap your head
around challenges and come up with solutions as opposed to just putting out fires every single day all day.”
Fletcher’s decision to pack up shop and move to North Port wasn’t made singularly, however. With a wife and two children, it wasn’t just his life that he was moving, but their lives as well. “Coming out of the pandemic, I knew that I was ready to make a change in my career and location. I told my daughter, who at the time had just finished her freshman year of high school, that as soon as you graduate we’re moving to Florida–to which she said let’s not wait, let’s go. Six months later we were down here,” says Fletcher. “We fell in love with the city, from the quality of life to where the city of North Port was at in their economic development lifecycle–from the board to myself and the community, we’re all sort of growing in the same direction and capitalizing on the moment of North Port. I think that me being here earlier might not have been the best fit and Lord knows what might’ve happened if I came here later, but the timing has been perfect for all of us to connect right now.”
As it turns out, Fletcher’s remarks may become more true than he ever intended. Due to the explosive rate of growth
in North Port, some of the benefits of the moment are also the challenges that the city faces: with the constant influx of residents, a greater commercial base must be set up to ease the tax burden on residents. Two new hospitals are set for construction, ushering in thousands of jobs and an even greater need for affordable housing; general infrastructure such as roadways, traffic lights and sidewalks need not just to be maintained but also rebuilt in the face of an increased hurricane threat.
Even still, Fletcher feels confident in himself and the team around him to face the challenges that lie ahead and help steer North Port to a better, brighter future. “After being in public service for 25 plus years now, I can tell you that we don’t do this for ourselves. We don’t do this to get rich. We do this because we’re providing an impact in the community and we want to leave it better than we found it,” says Fletcher. “The way things are going in North Port makes me think that our legacy and trajectory will be tremendous. All we have to do is keep our foot on the gas, make sure that we work with the right people, follow the vision of our policy makers and board and engage our community.” WPL

CHRIS CANNATA AND ERIC JOHNSTON WERE EARLY RESIDENTS OF WELLEN PARK, and both quickly fell in love with the vision for the community. Cannata has extensive experience in the culinary world: in the mid-nineties, she established Ridgefield Coffee Company in Ridgefield, Connecticut which served as both an upscale coffee house and eclectic restaurant. The innovative menu designed by Cannata earned the eatery a five-star rating from the New York Times. Johnston runs several social media pages geared toward the local community, including a popular Facebook group called Wellen Park Neighbors, Friends & Family. These longtime friends combined forces to co-create the Wellen Park Foodies group, where they both currently serve as admins. “Going out to eat is hands-down the most popular activity for an evening out in our area,” Johnston says. “It brings people together. It shows love and creativity and builds relationships. Those are the things that make us human and connected. Those are the things that build community.” Wellen Park Foodies was designed to be a place where members can share their experiences dining at local restaurants and talk about local food-oriented events. Admins and members are not permitted to receive compensation for their reviews, which means the posts on the page are refreshingly honest. The group is a great resource for people who want to know more about the local food scene, and it has also become a platform where local, independently-owned businesses are highlighted. “We have a slogan, ‘The best places are always discovered by word of mouth,’” Johnston says. “At the end of the day, we are neighbors helping other neighbors and residents of Wellen Park.” WPL
Spaghetti with Ricotta, Cherry Tomatoes and Pistachios
While people often frequent the Wellen Park Foodies Facebook page to learn about local restaurants, it’s also a great place to find new recipes. Chris Cannata shares a personal favorite of hers that’s hearty yet refreshing, making it the perfect dish for the transitional time between summer and fall.
Ingredients
¾ lb. spaghetti
½ c. ricotta cheese
15 fresh basil leaves
½ c. pistachios, crushed
½ c. parmesan cheese
4 tbsp. olive oil
2 garlic cloves, halved
1 cup cherry tomatoes, halved
Salt and pepper
Extra crushed pistachios
Extra chopped fresh basil
Preparation
In a bowl, combine ricotta, basil, pistachios, oil, salt and pepper. Transfer to a blender and blend everything into a paste to create the pistachio cream. Fry the tomatoes and garlic in a drizzle of olive oil for about three minutes, then season with salt and pepper and set aside. Cook the spaghetti until it is al dente, reserving a small amount of the cooking water. Remove the garlic from the pan, but leave the tomatoes: then, add the cooked spaghetti and combine it with the fried tomatoes. Stir in the pistachio cream, adding some of the reserved pasta water as necessary to loosen the sauce. Finally, stir in the additional chopped basil leaves and garnish with the extra crushed pistachios.

BraceYourself
CHOOSING THE RIGHT ORTHODONTIST FOR YOUR LITTLE ONES IS IMPORTANT AND NOT ALWAYS EASY. It’s a relationship that may be ongoing for a couple of years so you’ll want to establish a quality plan based on communication and a real commitment to treatment. Dr. Jeff Seymour, DMD, MS has been practicing in the Southwest Florida region for 25 years. With an office in Osprey, Dr. Seymour is excited to now be branching out into the Wellen Park community. “Our office specializes in braces and aligner treatments for kids as well as adults,” says Seymour. “We believe that you are never too old to strive for that perfect smile.” With a bachelor’s degree in Biology from University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, Dr. Seymour went on to attend dental school at the University of Florida and received an orthodontic specialty certificate from the Saint Louis University Orthodontic residency program.

great experience through his strong emphasis on customer service and his excellent clinical results. For those nervous about receiving treatment, he assures his patients there are no needles or drills at the orthodontist and that materials are more flexible which makes them much less painful than people expect.
If a child has excessive crowding, or jaw growth problems like a crossbite, underbite or large overbite, Dr. Seymour finds that it is best to begin treatment at a younger age. This allows the family to see results sooner. After all the child’s teeth have erupted, then they will receive a full set of braces. This two-phase dental treatment allows children to have less time with full braces and saves the family money. The most positive part of Dr. Seymour’s job is seeing the benefit of new smiles on kids and adults. “Having a great smile really benefits kids and adults almost right away. Their new smile improves their self confidence and allows them to interact with others easily,” he says. WPL

It Takes aVillage
A New Charter School Finds a Home at Wellen Park.
WORDS BY RACHEL CONSTANT
THIS FALL THE COLLEGE PREPARATORY ACADEMY AT WELLEN PARK will open its doors to just over 600 students in grades K-6. The school applies a village model of learning, meaning that each grade will have four classrooms and four teachers to support each student. This very innovative approach allows students to connect with each other by working in collaborative groups and the style of learning sets students up for success by allowing them to receive support in multiple areas.
An educator for 25 years, Dr. Christina Britton, Ed.D is the principal of The College Preparatory Academy at Wellen Park. Dr. Britton received a Doctoral degree in teaching from Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale. She most recently taught at Oasis High School in Cape Coral. A highly experienced educator, Dr. Britton is ready to take on the challenge of opening a brand new school in a brand new community.
The College Preparatory Academy at Wellen Park is remarkably different from other schools. With comfortable and mobile furniture that allows students to be engaged in the classroom, the school is considered to be an innovative facility.
The ultimate goal of the village system is to prepare students for future careers. While The College Preparatory Academy at Wellen Park will be a fairly small school, there are plans in place to expand to roughly 800 students in the coming years. This fall, the school will offer grades K-6 with a plan to add grades 7 and 8 in the near future.
“My goal is to give the school a family feel and make it feel like it is everyone’s school,” says Dr. Britton. “I like the concept of being able to meet kids where they are and helping them grow their knowledge. I believe the environment of the school will be one of high expectations, high energy and high achievement.”
Dr. Britton wants to create a secure environment for all. She hopes to encourage students to move forward academically and allow teachers to move further in their careers. “My greatest desire is to create a space where children are safe and challenged at the same time and I am confident that the village model and small school environment is the perfect way to do that,” she says. “According to the Veterans Administration’s Florida Veteran Suicide Data Sheet (2020), nearly 17 military veterans commit suicide every day and the military veteran’s suicide rate is nearly twice that of the general population,” says Colonel (U.S. Army, Retired) Tom Evelyn of The Veterans of Islandwalk group. “Sixteen percent of all suicides in Florida are military veterans. The suicide rate of first responders is also higher than the general population.”
Evelyn and the Veterans of Islandwalk group wanted to help curb the alarming rate of traumatic brain injury (TBI) and post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) induced suicide. They examined the work of several non-profit organizations, and ultimately selected Canines For Heroes (Caninesforheroes.org) as a recipient of their 2023 Veterans Serving Veterans golf tournament.
Canines For Heroes is a Sarasota based non-profit 501(c)(3) organization run by Mark and Sandra LaFlamme that provides highly-skilled service dogs free of charge to military veterans and public safety (police, fire, medical) personnel suffering with PTSD and TBI. The group trains the dogs through an extensive service dog training and certification program. Local (Sarasota and surrounding counties) first responders and military veterans who are undergoing active counseling also receive dog handling instruction and
training. Upon completion of training, first responders and veterans are matched to a dog specifically trained for each recipient.
Founder Mark LaFlamme is a United States Air Force veteran who served in three wars, while Sandra is the victim of a head injury herself. “We know the power of dogs and how they can transform lives,” she says, understanding the benefit that animals and engagement with a source of positivity and responsibility can provide. “Everything you do that brings positive things into your life, everything that you do that gets you reengaged, you’re concentrating and focusing, and it’s giving your brain a chance to heal around where that brain injury is.”
“Service dogs fill a crucial need for veterans,” adds Mark, “The transition between combat and civilian life can be challenging for service members.” Evelyn says the decision for the Veterans of Islandwalk to support Canines For Heroes was an easy one. “It may be a small operation, but that was what appealed to us, as it meant the nonprofit’s focus was entirely local. We also feel it is important to recognize first responders as they are also susceptible to PTSD because of the injuries they witness each day.”
The inaugural Veterans Serving Veterans 2023 golf tournament was held over Presidents weekend at Capri Isles Golf Club, Venice, Florida. One hundred thirty eight golfers and two dogs from six counties participated. Coupled with individual pledges from veterans living in Islandwalk (of the West Villages), the tournament raised over $10,000 to induct three dogs to begin extensive service training. A ceremonial check was presented to Canines For Heroes from the Veterans of Islandwalk at the Islandwalk community’s annual car show on Memorial Day.
Recently, the Island Walk Veterans achieved an Eagle “event” level sponsorship and the second annual event will be called The 2024 Environmental Management, LLC Veterans Supporting Veterans Charity Golf Tournament. This tournament is planned for February 24th at Capri Isles Golf Club in Venice.
“Our first responders and military veterans placed their lives and physical/mental well-being at risk for our protection. Service dogs provide increased physical and mental mobility, self-confidence and quality of life for our heroes,” says Evelyn. “Impacts of trained service dogs have positive, immediate and long-lasting effects to not only recipients and their families, but also to our communities. With this teaming, we see the positive benefits of how our first responders and military veterans’ lives are changed.” WPL
