StockportradioSociety

Hello to All members. The contest season is upon us for 2019 and SRS Contest Group are at Common Barn Farm entering into the spirit of contesting. Also across the waters to the Republic of Ireland for IOTA. The group are also experimenting with antennas to enhance the contest scores. If any members wish to assist in any way just speak to one of the contest group, or turn up at Common Barn on a contest weekend. All details are on the website—www.g8srs.co.uk. As you will all be aware we now have a flight cased C4FM/VHF/UHF kit all hard wired which will be used by the Events Team. When it is not in use, it will be made available for members to loan. Heather has kindly updated the list of member loan equipment on the website. We will be adding to the list in due course. A great success at NARSA again winning two awards. Well done to the team. Keep bringing the silver to our club. The Fusion kit on our stand brought a great amount of interest, poor Neil M6NAE was kept extremely busy chatting and demonstrating the operation of the kit. We have some interesting talks and presentation lined up for the coming months, so keep looking at the website for details. Summer is upon us (we hope), so hopefully the bands may become more active. There has been a few openings lately so keep your fingers crossed for more. If you have a special interest then please let us know, there maybe others within the membership that share the same interest. It doesn't have to be radio related but it would be great if it was. Don't forget it is your club, we, the Committee, try to give you the members what we think you would like to see happening within our club. If we get somthing wrong please speak up and let us know. Until the next QUA - Good DXing, with whichever mode you use, if you are portable, stay safe. 73 de Tony M0SAV - SRS Chairman 2

SRS Subscription Increase from December 2019 At a recent Committee Meeting which took place in April this year, the subject of members subscriptions was on the agenda. It has been agreed that as from December 2019 ("Subject to ratification at the December 2019 AGM"), when your subscription to Stockport Radio Society is due, the subs will be increased as below. This is a small increase and we are still the cheapest club in the North West. It has been 19 years since the last increase, and it is necessary to increase the subs due to costs in general rising. Standard Member upto 64 / Family was £12 will be increased to £15 Senior Members 65 plus was £7 will be increased to £10. We hope that you will carry on staying with the club and enjoy everything that we have to offer. If you pay by Standing Order, could you please ensure that your Standing Order is amended to the above figures and dated 1 December, with you call sign as a reference If you have any queries, please email me DIRECT (info@g8srs.co.uk) not through the members email. Digital Software Update from Neil M6NAE We, the NARSA team took the C4FM kit to the Blackpool rally. which most of the member know is in its own rack mount case. Thanks to all involved with building tips for the portable C4FM kit. Tony M0SAV decided to enter it into the NARSA novice competition for construction. On the day I read up on all the bits that we fitted into the c4fm go-box, and was ready to answer any questions that the judges may ask. Within a few hours after setting the station up on the club stand, I had a visit from the team of judges, in which they did not ask me any questions on what was inside the box, but why did i build it? I simply advised them that there are many senior members at our club who live in flats or members who can put any antennas up. This C4FM digital kit needs no antenna, just 5watts into a dummy load, and they can work the world. The station also has its own internet hub, with a pre-paid sim card for internet, so with the dv-mega bluestack, member who cant play radio at home and not be left out. After a good chat, they left to look at other entries. I was informed later, by Chris G8KRG (NARSA Secretary) to attend the stage area in the small room next door at 2pm. We had won the novice competition. I collected the trophy on behalf of the NARSA team. The club stand had lots of people showing an interest in the Yaesu C4FM digital kit. Stockport Radio Society was the only club to have a digital station up and running at the Blackpool rally this year. We had other club's who were attending the rally stopping by and asking questions on the system and what is involved to get the system up and working. We now have the new android app Peanut, which is also a digital mode to access d-star reflectors and other links We are in the process of setting echolink on the club laptop. If you fancy trying your hand at C4FM digital do come to the club and give it a try. The mode that you thought was not for you - just could be!!!

Watch out for another article from Neil in the next issue on the latest updates and changes in the world of digital radio 7

History – Beginning of the SRS AGM Trophies Eric G3GMM Plonk, another issue of QUA lands on the doormat, with information as we are now into autumn and it’s coming up to that time of year when SRS holds the AGM, with members much anticipation of who has won what for outstanding merit for one of the individual trophies, but by the time you read this, the AGM will be in the past for another year. Looking back over some decades of years, I recall, the club had only one trophy shield, which was for the NFD contest, individual members support whether it was initiated, pre-or post-war is not known, by me to date. Today, SRS has an array of different trophy’s donated by former members, past and present for more individual achievement in the various fields of amateur radio. But how many of the present members know of the past history and of the items for the awards that were created through the death of the then former Chairman and past President Ray Philips G3FYE. Three of which I have been personally involved with and created, not by request from the Committee, but from the object themselves, and the idea of what to do with them, but it’s now approximately two decades on since I saw and handled them, and wondered if they need some TLC refurbishments? The G3FYE Memorial CW Key In 1982 Ray and his wife Lorna were on holiday when his death occurred, and before his funeral took place, prior to this, the club had arranged one of its popular ‘junk sales’ as they were called then. The sale of course was always well attended with many other club members aswell as our own. Also for sale was a number of items belonging to Ray including, not realised at the time, his Morse key. A tattie little key of non-descripted origin and vintage, that used to dance around the surface we operated on. 8

However, as an Ex RAF W/op, flying in Sunderland Aircraft of Costal Command, I suspect it could have been one of the miniature keys issued to pilots flying in single aircraft, and used the key by having it strapped to the thigh of one leg, this at some time he had acquired possibly during his service life. After the closing of the sale, I was approached by John Verity, a then Committee Member who commented as to who was the young man who bought Rays key. Both of us had no idea and did not recognise him as a society member, and further agreed it ‘should have gone with Ray in his coffin’, but was it too late to retrieve it? Possibly. As people were dispersing, John spotted the young man in question, and made our approach, introduced ourselves, the importance of the key, and why we wish to retrieve it and the specific purpose. At the same time, John offered to replace the young man’s purchase with a key he had just bought for himself ‘A RAF Type D’, to which the young man agreed. However, we never asked his name at the time, and to this day, we don’t know ‘who he was’, or if he was a member of any club around the area, but sadly since then John G4ECI, a well-respected member of the club, has also passed away, midway in life from cancer. So, with the key retrieved and placed forever with its owner, I later thought it might had been better made into a trophy to be awarded for CW excellence at each years AGM and I was still pondering on this some weeks later. Now, amongst my small collection of Morse keys, I had two simple ones from around the 1920’s, on a wooden base, and probably from ‘Hamblin’s of London’ famous for quality toys and sleuthing equipment, so I decided to donate one for the memorial key. This I put before the club committee and was accepted. Having, during my latter school years, excelled in woodwork and on leaving joined a training school for an electrical engineering firm, so felt quite qualified to take on the work refurbishing the old key. Stripping it down, cleaning and having all the parts chrome plated and mounting on the base, made from oak, varnished and finally fitted with Memorial ‘G3FYE’ Engraved plate. It is some time since I have seen or handled the key and wondered how its faired over the years.

G4LP Mic Trophy This is awarded each year for the best talk or lecture by a Club member and was obtained in the later years of 1980s, from a well-known government surplus shop in Manchester by Fred Nicolls G3MAX who had several items for sale, on behalf of an SK, who was a member of the Manchester/Sale Radio Club G4LP. However, I cannot recall the name to the callsign, an older member of the Sale club or an old RSGB callbook maybe able to identify who the callsign belonged to, as it was fashioned from a pre-war ‘Deaf Aid’. HF Ladder Trophy (If anyone remembers this trophy please send me a pic) It was during a walk around a local charity event, at one of the stalls, I spotted a box with several commercial football/sports trophies in, that had been won and treasured by someone at sometime in the past, so a purchase was made with a view for use as future trophies. So, selecting the smallest and most appropriate I then constructed a wire ladder up the front and a new engraved plaque for SRS, but over the years this trophy has been replaced by a run of the mill type of shield donated by a now silent key. Why was it replaced? Did it disappear, fall apart or was it just not appropriate for HF Ladder. Perhaps some one can add a list of the other modern shields donated and by whom etc. Well that’s the story and history of how SRS acquired the start of the trophies, for excellence in various fields of club activity. However, I feel there is room for one more, to be created, but when I will be able to create it, I don’t know, time is of the essence as they say. Yours the Old Timer’ Eric G3GMM 10

WPX HF CW Contest Weekend of 25 & 26 May 19 We enjoyed another excellent contest over this last weekend making 3723 QSOs and amassing 1153 Multipliers giving a final score of 9M points over the 24 hour period. Last year we had 3287 QSOs with 1086 Multipliers giving 8.2M points. As usual most of the QSOs were with European stations but we did miss the long runs into the USA enjoyed a few years ago. Propagation did give us occasional DX contacts into New Zealand, Australia, South America and the far east.

However the 'jewel in the crown' for the weekend was the Sporadic E we enjoyed on 10 and 15 meters leading us to make 500 QSOs (on 10m) into Europe that were not there last year. Your operators were Tom M0DCG, Pawel M0DSL, Evan M0TJU, Pete M1PTR, Kieron M5KJM, Dave G0LZL, Carsten G0SYP and myself G3SHF.

14

Our thanks also go to the guys who helped building the station but didn't get the satisfaction of operating.IE Pete M1PTR, John M0JEK, Roy G6RSU and Nigel R G0RXA plus of course our occasional visitors over the set-up period and weekend. Next weekend sees us tackle the RSGB National Field Day contest. Again it's a CW contest but lasting only 24 hours. However the main difference is that we are only allowed 24 hours prior to contest start to build and set-up the station and antennas. We started the build work at 4.00pm on Friday 24th May ready for Saturdays 4.00pm kick-off. We will be moving all our antennas and gear up to Whiteside's field about 1 mile east of Common Barn Farm. As with all our events SRS members are more than welcome to come up and assist us or simply see what is going on. If anyone wants further details of our location please contact me. Regards Bernard This is the view you see from the farm Image from Nigel G0RXA 15

Portable HexBeam review With Matt M0MVR and Rob M0ORA

SRS have a portable hexbeam that is from Ant (MW0JZE) - the Hexbeam as an antenna is a great compromise antenna and especially in this portable version as it offers a good level of performance in a genuinely portable package. However when the hex is setup it’s quite a significant size especially if you’re used to working with verticals, wire antennas or dipoles so it’s really only suitable to open areas or if you have a larger back garden. 16

I’d read a number of reviews and watched some YouTube videos looking at Hexbeam antennas before and a number of them had mentioned about the initial setup time especially if you have never setup a Hex from scratch previously. Indeed my first attempt to follow the instructions didn’t result in the correct setup. It takes a good hour to set up the Hex first time, however after a few practise runs you really do get the picture of how this antenna needs to be setup. This portable version of the hexbeam covers bands 20m, 17m, 15m, 12m, 10m & 6m with very good SWR on all the bands - you will however still require a tuner. It’s also recommended to have a air wound choke (ugly balun) at the feed point on the antenna, fortunately the SRS club hex has this already wound. I was achieving average SWR of no greater than 1.7:1 on 20m. Where the hex excels is that it’s considered a 2 element beam so the signal received is typically 2 to 3s points greater than what I was experiencing on my dipole. Likewise when transmitting on the hex we were getting better signal reports from the stations we were contacting. What I noticed the most with the hex was I was able to pick out distant signals that were simply not there on the dipole. Overall I’d recommend a portable Hexbeam or fixed Hexbeam antenna for those who like working DX and have the room for one or who get out HF portable. The photos of the club portable Hexbeam in use at our favourite portable HF location… 17

FROM THE ARCHIVES You have got to laugh! The following contribution was submitted (many years ago) by Stewart Revell G3PMJ A heartwarming story to help you through the day. The following letter was forwarded to someone who teaches at a junior high school in Memphis Tennessee. The letter was sent to the principal’s office after the school had sponsored a luncheon for the elderly. This story is a credit to all humankind. Read it, soak it up, and bask in the warm feeling that it leaves you with! You gotta love Edna! Dear Reyer School, Good Bless you for the beautiful radio I won at your recent Senior Citizens Luncheon. I am 84 years old and live in the County Home for the Aged. All my people have gone. Its nice to know someone thinks of me. God bless you for your kindness to an old forgotten lady. My room mate is 95 and always has her own radio, but would never let me listen to it, no matter how often or sweetly I asked. The other day her radio fell and broke into a lot of pieces. It was awful. She was very upset. She then asked if she could listen to mine and I said **** you. Sincerely Edna Johnson.

Sorry if this offends anyone, but the humour of the elderly makes me laugh

SRS DXCC Ladders 2019 We are now at the mid-year point and from looking at the tables it’s good to see there’s an increase of activity across all bands. Propagation - HF conditions generally remained quiet with burst of activities from Special Event stations, DX expeditions and contests. Early summer saw Sporadic E openings on VHF and the higher HF bands. HF & 6 DXCC Ladder The activity distribution shows that 20m and 40m are still the most popular bands with activity across all HF bands when conditions permit. I also note that leading entries have probably taken advantage of the openings allowing them claim scores across the majority of bands. Peter, M0PTB continues to increase his lead from using weak signal mode FT8. Following the last edition of QUA I was curious to find out what setup he uses. His reply My 'antenna' is a 'medium wire', mostly below the ground level of an earth bank to the South. The ground rises to the North. East-West is clear. The wire runs SSE about 10m agl. All-in-all not a good DX antenna! I've been using FT8 exclusively for the last 2 weeks using 5W (kids playing near the wire) to 20W. Tonight I pushed to 80W to complete an NA QSO, though. My kit is a 1983ish (but good) 'boat anchor' with a club-kit interface to a cheap second-hand PC. Nothing special there. If I can do it so can you! Well done Peter! I hope his words encourage other members to have a go. This report extends a warm welcome to Keith, 2E0JPY who joins for the first time with an impressive second place score on the ladder. Bob, GM4UYZ moves up the table into third place. A couple of other entries worthy of a mention are Al, G0ROW with the only entry on 60m and Carsten (last year’s trophy winner) putting in a mono-band performance on 6m. 2 & 70 DXCC Ladder - Neil, M6NAE now shares first place with Paul, 2E0TWD each with a point on each band. Looking at their scores I wonder if the points came from the SRS Nets? I know the RSGB first of five Backpacker’s contest took place in May so it would be interesting to hear if anyone who took part had VHF QSO’s outside of G land. If anyone needs help with a submission please drop me an email or catch me or Neil at the club. We’ll be glad to help. 73 and Good Dxing, Pete Ridley, M1PTR
