A community gathering spot, and unique bicycle shop, that borrows and twists characteristics from the natural environment, creating a truly inspiring experience.
The bicycle is a curious vehicle. Its passenger is its engine. -John Howard
connecting community
Location
Population 29,306
Past- The working class community thrived from the 1930’s to the 1950’s. The construction of the golden state freeway destroyed nearly all retail and public spaces and left Frogtown isolated from the nearby towns and other suburbs.
Nearby Communities Silverlake, Downtown L.A., Echo Park, Hollywood
Present- The secret about the amazing location, proximity to parks and the calm residential feel of Frogtown has been discovered along with the heightened interest in the industrial area running parallel to the L.A. River, has led to the recent influx of middle class families moving into the traditional “bedroom community.” Future- Residents face further gentrification, similar to it’s neighboring community of Silver Lake, and an economic and political dispute regarding the span of the L.A. River that passes through the valley.
Amenities Two Liquor Stores, Independently operated library, Parks

Recycle’s experience is an abstract translation of the natural landscape. Inspired by the landscape from the surrounding areas, topographic lines were extruded to create a terraced/stair stepping landscape that flows from outdoors through the inside of the structure- blurring the line between the indoors and outdoors.
Topographic lines sweep through the site, creating a unique landscape, defining areas of activity, creating enclosure, seating, shelving and help direct circulation.

Recycles unique appearance coupled with a distinct use of materials creates a retail shopping experience that is welcoming, informative and instilling a sense of curiosity. Engulfing visitors with a special interaction with nature, a new way of viewing the natural landscape around them, while also inviting them to touch, explore and understand the materials surrounding them, Recycle creates conversation on the line between man-made and natural, while encouraging community connection, interaction and alternative mobility.

Orange- the color, taste, sent, flavor & texture, embody the mood and feeling of Recycle. The orange bands streak the landscape of the Recycle site, converging indoors where the topographic lines become shelving, seating, enclosure and lighting.
