The last few months has been great! The fishing is on point. The charters have been non stop. My clients are Happy!! The weather has been cooperative. Starting with Red Snapper season. We only had 4 days total to get our 1 Fish per person per day. We limited out everyday with some Big snappers!! The Flounder have been thick and I know just where to go to get them. Limiting out with 10 fish per person on several trips. Flounder regulations will be changing in October from 10 Fish per person at 12” down to 5 fish at a minimum of 14”. From offshore to inshore the Mangrove Snappers are definitely showing up and are a delicious fish to eat. The next few months I will be focused on fishing more Nearshore for Sharks, Big Jacks, Tarpon, and Tripletail. Inshore I will be targeting the Big Bull Redfish that will be here soon eating and breeding in large numbers. Making the light tackle lots of fun when hooked up to a 40-50” Redfish. Lots of Tarpon are around still and Snook Season opening at the end of this month. Book your Trip today and get Caught Up with Captain Bruno.

BREVARD COUNTY

By: Tim Camp

Hey there again from Brevard County! Well we have made it mostly through the dog days of summer and for a lot of us around here that means it's time to set those fishing poles down for a little while and focus on putting some different meat in the freezer. It's finally hunting season again!!! Gator season has opened up in our area already and local hunters are trading in those top water lures for treble hooks and bang sticks. With a few reports of decent gators being plucked from our local waters, there are still some monster size lizards out there to be had. Good luck and be safe. For those other hunters that aren't chasing gators on the open waters, you'll probably find them out in the woods, filling feeders full of corn and putting up ladder stands across the marsh and dry lands in hopes of sticking that monster Florida bucks that they have had their eye on all summer long. Some areas in Florida have already opened up for deer season, but here in our central hunting zone we do not open up deer season until September 19th. So if you have any dreams of filling that freezer with venison, its half past time to get yourself in gear and get out there. And don't forget if your in the Mims area you can find all you need for your next hunting trip at D&E Outdoors!! (shameless plug) And for those avid fisher people out there, the saltwater bite has slowed a bit, but remember your best chance to get that big Red or Trout is usually at first light or later in the evening toward last light. Also there has been early reports of Speck being caught in our local lakes and ponds, so don't forget to get those crappie poles ready. (And Congrats to our Photo contest winner Dylan Hardin with his Tarpon Pic) Sponsored by D & E Hardware. Until next time High Tines, and Tight Lines Tim Camp

PUTNAM COUNTY BASS WORLD LODGE 386-4672267 Mark is catching some nice bass using plastic worms on the bottom. This last full moon several of their customers caught bream off the beds. With the new moon the bream fishing should be good also. JoAnn and Richard Vatz caught some small shrimp throwing cast nets. The mullet are being caught baiting them up with feed and using small pieces of redworms. MESSER’S EAST-WEST BAIT & TACKLE 386-328-4035 Jimmy tells us they are catching some pretty nice bass out of the River. It took 26 pounds, 5 bass limit to win the Clay County PAL tournament this past weekend. Bream and shellcracker are coming out of Rodman and some shrimp out of the River. If you love to fish for catfish they are hitting in Dunn’s Creek.

but otherwise we crossed our fingers and forged ahead.

Gone Coastal: Lifejackets: Variety is the spice of safety I hate to admit it, but for years, our two neon-orange over-the-neck life jackets (aka personal floatation devices or PFDs) acted primarily as seat cushions in our 40-yearold canoe. We didn’t have much money, and the thought of spending $40 on a personal floatation device seemed… unnecessary. We told ourselves the things everyone tells themselves: we are really good swimmers, this is how it was when we were growing up, we aren’t “required” to wear them, etc.

That was until this year, when on our way with a 5-year-old for her first ever canoe trip, I decided to invest in a new life jacket I hoped I could wear comfortably in the hot Florida sun and not get chafed while paddling. Part of me did it because I’d worn a few of the lighter weight PFDs at work and, honestly, really liked the comfort in knowing that if I ended up in the water, I’d still be afloat. Part of me also did it for the 5-year-old, who is required to wear one until she turns six. I wanted to set a good example. But also, I know that statistically, a large number of people could have survived a boating accident if they had worn their life jacket. Of the total number of fatalities last year, only 12% were wearing life jackets. If I’m going to be selling safety, I should live safely. As someone who grew up around the water, I get it. I can’t tell you how many times as a kid I was shoved into a giant orange lifejacket, sweating to death, feeling like I could barely move. But honestly, today’s personal floatation devices are different.

Next time you visit a local tackle Of course, we had a life jacket for shop or sporting goods store, check the dog, who was a poor swimmer, out the lifejacket aisle.

You’ll find not only a wide variety of shapes, colors and sizes, but some are built right into fishing vests or hunter coats. Others are inflatable and as compact as a scarf or fanny pack until they hit water, when they automatically fill with air. I’ll agree with the U.S. Coast Guard on this one: “There’s no excuse not to wear a lifejacket on the water!” That day, canoeing with my daughter went off without a hitch. The jacket was not too hot or too bulky, I didn’t chafe, and I paddled in the comfort of knowing that if the boat flipped, I could focus on helping her and not on keeping my head above water. Also, pockets! Oh, the pockets. One for my phone, one for my snacks. Hidden pockets inside pockets. Anyone who has ever reached into the depths of a dry bag for something the size of a pocketknife will know… pockets are your friend. For more on lifejackets, including where to get them and more, check out Wear it Florida MyFWC.com/boating/safetyeducation/wear-it-florida. The quarterly Gone Coastal column is one of many ways that the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) Division of Marine Fisheries Management is helping recreational anglers understand complex saltwater regulations and learn more about saltwater fishing opportunities and issues in Florida. MARION-CITRUS COUNTY ANGLER’S FAMILY RESORT 352-489-2397 Anglers fishing Lake Rosseau are catching some specks on minnows. The Withlacoochee River is producing bass around the laid down trees and in the shade using shiners, plastic worms and topwater frogs. Lots of Bluegill are being caught using crickets, redworms, nightcrawlers and frozen shrimp. Catfish are biting frozen liver and night crawlers. A lighter colored pumpkinseed worm is working for the bass. Bass are in deeper water because of the heat or in the heavy cover for the shade.

Flipping docks, matted grass and lily pads are all working well. Lake Griffin and Lake Eustis are very productive for bass fishing. Either swimming or bottom fishing a worm as slow as you can. A floating worm is also working quite well. The baits that are working well for my customers are drop shots with a Junebug 4 inch worm, watermelon red Producto’s Hot Rod fished weightless and of course shiners, (freelined and with bobbers). The local small lakes are producing some nice sized bass. Freelining a shiner (without a bobber or weight) is still producing some of the bigger fish. A slow falling sinking weightless worm (Producto’s Hot Rod) or a white and chartreuse spinner bait reeled in as slowly as possible, are both working quite well.

BROOKER BAIT & TACKLE 352-460-0695 said shellcracker and bluegill are being caught out of the North end of Lake Griffin. Bass fishing has been really good in Big Lake Harris using speed worms – watermelon red. They are still catching a few specks in deep water, 15 to 20 feet. Shellcrackers are being caught from Lake Dora using crickets. Wed night tournament took 19 ½ pounds and was won by Captain Gino Losi. Eric Panzarooni weighed in big bass which went 9.7 pounds and came in 2nd with 19.1 pounds. A lot of bass are being caught on chatterbaits. Lake Harris & Lake Griffon using both large and medium domestic shiners are also good. Zoom Mega Vipe speed worm is working well – colors watermelon red and June bug red. Redfish are good out of Crystal River and trout are being caught in the Homosassa Area. Brookers has a well stocked shop and expert knowledge on the current fishing, both freshwater and saltwater. They also carry frozen salt water bait. LAKESIDE BAIT & TACKLE 352-742-3336 Heidi tells us bluegill and shellcrackers are doing good in the pads and the grass using grass shrimp and redworms. Bass are still up in the grass and lily pads looking for shade and are being caught using crank baits such as the Strike King 3XD which runs around 8 to 10ft.

Reducing the risk of CWD spreading into Florida through requirements on importing deer carcasses

1) Possesses an FWC Georgia/ Alabama Carcass Importation Permit prior to the carcass being imported into Florida (The FWC’s Georgia/Alabama Carcass Importation Permit is available by logging in or creating an account at the FWC’s PermitMe! webpage and following the instructions to self-issue the permit).

2) Reports the carcass importation within 24 hours of entering Florida using Currently, Florida is one of 24 states the FWC’s online Georgia/Alabama where chronic wasting disease, or Carcass Importation Reporting Form CWD, has NOT been detected. The (through the PermitMe! Webpage. Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) is continuing 3) Disposes of any remains using FWCits work to reduce the risk of CWD approved deer carcass disposal options. spreading into our state, and your involvement in these efforts is • White-tailed deer legally harvested vital. Knowing and following the from Georgia or Alabama properties requirements for importing harvested bisected by the Florida state line and deer, elk, moose, caribou and other under the same ownership are exempt members of the deer family are from importation permit, reporting important ways you can help protect and disposal requirements. If CWD is detected in Georgia or Alabama, Florida deer populations. importing a white-tailed deer carcass With big game seasons beginning from that state would be prohibited. to open in neighboring states and across the country, we want to remind everyone hunting outside of Florida that carcasses or carcass parts of deer, elk, moose, caribou and all other members of the deer family may not be imported into Florida from anywhere. Following are exceptions to this requirement: • Hunters may import into Florida de-boned meat; finished taxidermy mounts; antlers; and hides, skulls, skull caps, and teeth if all soft tissue has been removed.

Learn more about carcass importation requirements by visiting MyFWC.com/ Deer. We’ve had hunters ask how banning carcasses and carcass parts from being imported into Florida can help safeguard our deer population. Here’s the reason. Unintentionally transporting infected deer, elk, moose and caribou carcasses is a known risk for introducing CWD to new areas.

We’re grateful for Florida hunters commitment to protecting deer populations and upholding the future of hunting. If you’d like to learn more about CWD, visit MyFWC.com/CWD for resources including a map showing states and provinces affected by CWD; safety tips for hunting in a CWD state or province; and an infographic about how to properly dispose of a deer carcass. This disease is caused by abnormal proteins called prions that accumulate in the brain and spinal column, causing irreversible damage and ultimately death for members of the deer family. CWD can be transmitted in different ways including direct animal-to-animal contact. It also can be transmitted indirectly. Members of the deer family can become infected when they consume CWD prions from soil contaminated with the feces, urine, saliva, other bodily fluids or decomposed tissues of a CWD-infected carcass. CWD prions persist in the environment and remain contagious for years. Once CWD becomes established in an area, it’s hard to control the spread and almost impossible to eradicate. CWD can substantially reduce infected deer populations. For those reasons, and because there is no known cure or effective vaccine, FWC biologists have a focus on prevention. To confirm Florida remains free of CWD, the FWC has a robust monitoring program. Since 2002, we’ve tested more than 14,000 deer for CWD and the disease has not been detected in this state. To continue testing, samples from deer heads are needed. Deer hunters can support this effort by donating heads from deer harvested in Florida. Skull cap and antlers can be removed and kept by the hunter. In addition, hunters who harvest a sick or extremely skinny deer should avoid handling it and call the CWD hotline at 866-293-9282.
