Ponce Inlet New Smyrna Beach Fishing Report The Year 2020 has been a crazy year. A lot of Memories that will make the History Books. A Lot of Fish Caught. Many Sunrises and Sunsets spent on the boat with some awesome clients that I’ve met and will continue to take fishing. Thanks!!!! As we move into the colder months fishing stays Hot. Colder water. Colder air temps. Clearer water. Which means It’s time to use lighter tackle. Lighter leader and smaller hooks. Get the Bite and take the fight. Big fish. Like I always say. Elephants eat peanuts. Have a few different rods set up for targeting different species. You never know what your going to see when out on the water. Always be prepared with a several types of bait like shrimp, crabs, and mullet. Lots of different Species to target throughout the next 2 months such as Big Bull Reds, Black Drum, Flounder,Sheephead, mangrove Snapper, Permit/Pompano, Tarpon, Snook, Tripletail, Cobia, King Mackerel and soo much more. The Offshore Bite is looking Awesome if the Conditions let us get Out. Book a Charter with Captain Bruno and get Caught Up 386-689-7409.

FRESHWATER FISHING WITH BRYN FROM HIGHLAND PARK FISH CAMP We are looking forward to a great 2021 season for Speckled Perch fishing in the central St. Johns area. Last year was one of the worst seasons I can ever remember for Speck fishing, but we have already seen big improvements and I feel we are almost back to normal. Anglers can always count on this time of the year for big spawning Speckled Perch (Crappie) where they can be caught in large numbers some times against cover and at other times in deeper water in the various creeks and channels. When they are against the bank a cork and jig method is very productive. Use a small cigar shaped cork with a speck jig tied 1 ½ to 2 feet below, cast toward the bank or cover and retrieve with a sharp jerking motion. Popular colors include chartreuse, blue and silver, for deeper water try trolling with these same jigs. For large mouth Bass use wild river shiners fished under an egg shaped bobber approximately 2 ½ feet deep. Fish under floating vegetation and wait for a strike. Some early spawning activity will occur this month in and around spring fed areas. Artificial bait can be effective this month too. Top water lures in early morning and plastic worms casting to the pads or flipping in the grass mats to get largemouth Bass. Lake Woodruff and surrounding waterways have been a choice location for some real trophy fish in the month of January. Visit local camps and tackle shops for up to date reports. Ask for a free fishing map at Highland Park Fish Camp, you can also call us anytime for current fishing information.

BREVARD COUNTY
By: Tim Camp
Seasons Greetings again from Brevard County Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all of our Fishin' & Huntin' Magazine readers out there! With most of our Hunters out there still chasing Bambi until deer season ends on January 24th, you still have sometime to get out there and bag that gobbler you've been dreaming of. Fall Turkey for our Zone C runs from November 7th to January 3rd. If you have missed the boat Fall Turkey season however don't fret, Spring turkey season will be just around the corner. For us here North of State Road 70, Youth turkey hunt weekend is March 13th-14th, and open season starts right after from March 20th-April 25th. There is a daily bag limit of two as well as only two for the whole spring season, So good luck! As far as our local waters, these cooler nights have brought the water temperature down a bit providing great success in deeper waters for Black Drum, Sheepshead, and Monster Redfish! Most having proven results using live baits, as well as cut baits. If you don't have boat access, the Beach fishing bite has been quite good as well. Well that's all for now, Until next time, High tines & Tight Lines. Tim Camp
FWC approves regulation changes for flounder effective March 1 At its December Commission meeting, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) approved changes to the management of Florida’s flounder fishery. A stock status update suggested that the flounder fishery statewide has been in a general declining trend in recent years and is likely overfished and undergoing overfishing on the Atlantic coast of Florida. Other south Atlantic and Gulf states have also reported declines in flounder populations and have been making their own regulation changes. FWC has been working with stakeholders to gather input on this fishery through workshops, online commenting and more. Changes effective March 1, 2021, include: •Extending ALLFWC flounder regulations into federal waters. •Increasing the minimum size limit from 12 inches to 14 inches total length (recreational and commercial). •Reducing the recreational daily bag limit from 10 to 5 fish per person. •Establishing an Oct. 15 – Nov. 30 recreational closed season. •For commercial harvesters using allowable gear: Establishing a commercial trip and vessel limit of 150 fish from Dec. 1 – Oct. 14, and 50 fish from Oct. 15 – Nov. 30. •Modifying the incidental bycatch limit for commercial harvesters using non-allowable gear from 50 pounds to 50 fish/trip. •Creating a federal waters trawl bycatch limit of 150 flounder/trip from Dec. 1 – Oct. 14, and 50 fish/trip from Oct. 15 – Nov. 30. Learn more about flounder regulations at MyFWC.com/Marine. SSFHMagazine Jan/Feb 2021 Page 22

PUTNAM COUNTY GEORGETOWN MARINA & LODGE @ 386-467-2002 Nolan tells us they are catching nice sized bass using plastic worms, flukes and frogs. Specks are also being caught off the pilings in Lake George and under the docks using minnows. They are catching some stripped bass with live shrimp and nice sized catfish are being caught right now. MESSER’S EAST-WEST BAIT & TACKLE @ 386-328-4035 Jimmy tells us they are catching some specks in Rodman and they are showing up in Lake Crescent and Dead Lake. Jiffy Jigs and minnows are the best baits. Flipping small jigs and jigs tipped with minnows flipped under the docks is still working well. Some nice bass are coming out of the River. Catfish are coming out of Dunn’s Creek.

SEMINOLE-ORANGE COUNTY 8 things you definitely want to know about Florida’s wildlife management system If you have hunted a wildlife management area or are planning to, the following information can help you make the most of Florida’s public hunting areas, understand how these hunting opportunities are managed and contribute to the process for developing huntingrelated rules for WMAs. •Most WMAs are owned or managed by entities other than the FWC The majority of Florida’s 6 million acre WMA system is managed or owned by government agencies or private landowners the FWC has partnered with. The FWC is the lead manager or landowner for 1.46 million acres and works with cooperators to allow hunting and other outdoor recreation on another 4.54 million acres.

WMAs are managed for conservation and recreation and provide a diversity of habitats managed for wildlife. •WMAs are for everyone There are over 184 areas in the WMA system across the state, from Perdido River WMA in northwest Florida to Southern Glades WEA in the south region and all points in between. These areas are managed to conserve a variety of wildlife species and provide outdoor recreation opportunities. Certainly, hunting is a mainstay on Florida’s WMA system and offered at the vast majority of areas. These public areas also provide opportunities for fishing, wildlife viewing, paddling, hiking, horseback riding and bicycling. Some areas even offer shooting range facilities and camping.

Depending on the WMA and time of year, hunters can pursue deer, turkey, waterfowl, wild hogs, dove, quail, gray squirrels and more. The FWC also issues permits for hunting on several U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service national wildlife refuges in Florida (but does not manage those hunts). •Florida’s Quota Hunt Program serves multiple purposes Quotas, which are the maximum Con’t on next page

MARION-CITRUS COUNTY number of hunters permitted to hunt on a WMA during a given period of time, provide hunters with quality hunting experiences. In addition to managing game populations, quotas are used to prevent overcrowding on WMAs that are smaller or in high demand. The number of quota permits available for each area is based on an area's size, habitat, game populations and hunter preference, and are issued through random draw lotteries throughout the seasons. Quota permits also allow the FWC to offer hunts to a broad range of users. People can apply for youth, family and mobility-impaired quota hunts as well as archery, muzzleloading gun and general gun quota permits. Quota hunts are also offered for deer,

After proposals go through an extensive review process, stakeholders have several chances to provide input on recommended rule changes. The FWC reaches out to hundreds of thousands of stakeholders to make them aware of opportunities to review and comment on rule change proposals through email blasts, the HuntFlorida Facebook page, Twitter, the Hunting Hot Sheet and MyFWC.com. In addition, public testimony opportunities are provided at each Commission meeting after draft rule changes are presented. If the Commission approves the proposed rule amendments for advertising in the Florida Administrative Register, the FWC continues to seek feedback from stakeholders until rule changes are presented for final adoption at a future Commission meeting. BASS N GAL GUIDE SERVICE @ 352-267-0062 The Harris chain has been giving up some nice bass. With the cooler days and nights the specks should be turning on this next full moon. Either swimming or bottom fishing a worm as slow as you can. A floating worm is also working quite well. The baits that are working well for my customers are drop shots with a Junebug 4 inch worm, watermelon red Producto’s Hot Rod fished weightless and of course shiners, (freelined and with bobbers). The local small lakes are producing some nice sized bass. Freelining a shiner (without a bobber or weight) is still producing some of the bigger fish. A slow falling sinking weightless worm (Producto’s Hot Rod) or a white and chartreuse spinner bait reeled in as slowly as possible, are both working quite well. For the fishing trip you’ve dreamed of give me a call @ 352267-0062.

On the Withlacoochee River they are catching bass around the laid down trees. On the North side going towards Mile Marker 200 is also a good area to fish. Catfish are being caught using frozen liver and night crawlers. A lighter colored pumpkinseed worm is working for the bass.

Turkey Season opens on March 20th each year and runs through May 5th. We have 5,500 of prime turkey woods with a mixture of river bottoms, pine ridges and lots of food plots planted with chuffas, the turkey’s favorite. Our seasoned guides are very familiar with our properties and are very personable and experienced. While on your turkey hunt , if you would like to sit for a wild hog in the afternoon, you are allowed to take one hog during the three day hunt for no extra charge. We have lots of them and some really big ones. We can hunt hogs year round and some of our most productive hunts this past year took place in May, June and July. We have plenty of land now with hogs to be able to hunt large groups, up to 10. We can even accommodate bow groups that large. Hogs are very smart animals, don’t come thinking they are just dumb farm animals. This is a fun hunt for all who just do not want to quit hunting after their deer season closes.
