WRITERS:

Front Cover: Capt Cody Kendrath and Capt Rick Trussell with a Mahi caught offshore Ponce Inlet.

Cody says it all started when he turned 5 years old and he was FINALLY allowed to go offshore fishing with his dad. His father taught him at a young age to love the ocean and all that it offers but to also respect it. From then on his love for the ocean has only grown and he is out there every chance he gets. 23 years later and he is now a licensed and insured fishing charter captain for “Vulcan Charters” out of ponce inlet. Written By Cody, Captain Rick Trussell has been friends with my dad since I was a kid. They hunted and fished together and made sure I was passed down the same traditions. I’m coming up on 4 years working and fishing for Captain Rick. He’s had his boat “The Vulcan” down in Costa Rica for years, the bahamas, the keys etc and has fished the waters all around the world. The knowledge, wisdom, tips, and tricks that I have learned from the 4th oldest captain operating out of ponce inlet is absolutely invaluable. I wouldn’t be who I am today without him. He pushed me to go to sea school and get my captains license to take the business over one day and I now take some charters by myself and others I still work as a first mate for him and second captain.”

Ponce Inlet New Smyrna Beach Fishing Report By: Capt Bruno Summer time in New Smyrna brings us a mix bag of great fishing. Lots of bait finally starting to show up. Which means Inshore we’re targeting trophy fish such as Tarpon, Bull Reds and Snook. Of course there’s a bunch of other species to be caught like mangrove snappers, flounder and lots of jacks. The Nearshore fishing is super fun because we can target some of Capt Brunos favorite fish. Tarpon is one of the targeted species but your going to get into much more looking for them. Lots of Sharks, Bonita, Spanish Mackerel and giant Jack Crevelle. Flounder should slowly start showing up. Remember the regulations changed to 5 per person at a minimum of 14”. Offshore fishing is where Capt Bruno likes to be during the summer months. If you want some good eating fish to put in the box to take home or bring to local restaurant to cook your catch. Often coming back with our limits of jacks and red eyes. The kingfish have been thick along with the occasional Cobia swimming up to the back of the boat. Big mangrove snappers feeding in the chum slick. Fighting off the sharks and cudas you also have to beware of the Goliath groupers looking for a snack. Red Snapper season is about to be here July 9-11th only allowing us the 3 days to get our 1 fish per day. Have Fun Be Safe. Book a charter and get Caught Up!!!

LIVE BAIT & TACKLE Feed-Beer-Soda-Snacks

Greetings from North Brevard! Well summer is officially upon us. The long hot days ahead are sure to be filled with many tight lines as the fishing has been splendid. Many early morning and late evenings have been proving fruitful for anglers of all ages as the Trout and Redfish bite has been great. Also many anglers have had great luck bow fishing for black drum in the Indian river in the evenings, and also tilapia can be a fun fish to target in fresh water as their beds are highly visible from the banks. Most Hunters have already been drawn for their management hunts, but if you haven't had a chance to put in for any allocated management hunts, I would still suggest looking into it for any allocations that were not picked up.

POLK COUNTY Pull Bass from the Grass Come summer, largemouth bass make a habit of burying themselves in the grass. Bass sharpies know they’re in there, of course, but not everyone has the patience to work through waters where the stringy stalks wrap around hooks and jig heads on every cast. That’s why Daiwa and Ever Green International’s new Grass Ripper (GR) jig series is sure to be a hit. Featuring a perfectly positioned eyelet at the front of the jig’s nose, and teardrop-shaped head that angles smoothly from eyelet to base, the Grass Ripper gently slithers and glides over grass instead of trying to power through it. Following this path of least resistance allows the jig to avoid catching grass and other vegetation around the eyelet while its robust weed guard protects the hook.

“Many jigs have the eyelet atop the jig head. Unfortunately, that positioning leads to the jig getting plugged-up as you force it through the grass,” explains Marc Mills, Daiwa’s Field Marketing Manager. “With the Grass Ripper, the jig head just slides up and over the grass to keep itself weedless more often than not. Try one on a grassy flat and you’ll notice the difference immediately. Fewer weeds on your jig equates to more strikes overall, and better odds of having a lunker take a swipe at your offering.”

BROOKER BAIT & TACKLE 352-460-0695 said the National Professional League had over a 100 people fishing their recent 3 day tournament with a $5,000. Entry and it took 61 pounds 15 oz. to win. Bass are being caught out of the shallow water in the grass. Gordon went to the coast this past weekend and caught a bunch of trout with most of them over 20 inches. LAKESIDE BAIT & TACKLE 352-742-3336 Heidi tells us the shellcracker and bluegill are on fire in Haines Creek, Dead River and Lake Harris using grass shrimp and redworms. They are in the grass and lily pads. Bass are moving in and are being caught in the shade under docks, in the pads or mats flippin or using crank baits on the shell bars. Jake at ASTOR BAIT & TACKLE 352-759-2600 tells us a few specks are being caught for those lucky enough to find them. Shellcracker are biting and the bass are being caught using plastic worms.

It is home to a variety of rare and unique wildlife including a diversity of native birds, mammals, fish and reptiles. However, some reptiles, like the invasive Burmese python, do not belong in this ecosystem and pose a threat to native wildlife. The Florida Python Challenge® is an exciting conservation effort which helps protect the rare Everglades habitat and the animals that live there from these invasive, nonnative snakes. The python removal competition begins at 8:00 a.m. on July 9, 2021 and ends at 5 p.m. on July 18, 2021. SSFHMagazine July/August 2021 Page 36

DEER HUNTING SEASON 3 DAYS HUNTS $1,295.00 5 DAY HUNTS $1,995.00 Meals & Lodging Included with all pricing!

We have the longest deer season in the US August 15th-January 1st, with weapon of choice for the entire season. The velvet hunts last through Labor Day weekend and the rut is throughout the months of October and November. We hunt seven days a week and allow two bucks per day, only with one small (under 12" wide) per hunter, per season. We have open areas where first timers can take a buck, Long Managed Trophy Areas where bucks must be a minimum of 15" outside spread. Then we have our special Big Trophy Area, where the bucks have been on strict management for only mature bucks for the past 13 seasons, the bucks there have to be 16" outside spread of 110 Boone and Crockett Score. That area will be for very serious Trophy Hunters only.

Wild Hog Hunts Year Round 3 Days $1,095

Meals & Lodging Included with all pricing!

Spring Turkey Season 3 Days $1,395

Meals & Lodging Included with all pricing! Turkey Season opens on March 20th each year and runs through May 5th. We have 5,500 of prime turkey woods with a mixture of river bottoms, pine ridges and lots of food plots planted with chuffas, the turkey’s favorite. Our seasoned guides are very familiar with our properties and are very personable and experienced. While on your turkey hunt , if you would like to sit for a wild hog in the afternoon, you are allowed to take one hog during the three day hunt for no extra charge. We have lots of them and some really big ones. We can hunt hogs year round and some of our most productive hunts this past year took place in May, June and July. We have plenty of land now with hogs to be able to hunt large groups, up to 10. We can even accommodate bow groups that large. Hogs are very smart animals, don’t come thinking they are just dumb farm animals. This is a fun hunt for all who just do not want to quit hunting after their deer season closes.
