Find wildlife management areas where a quota permit isn’t needed for spring turkey hunting

A gobbler track along a dirt road. The only wild turkey sign Peter Updike, a long-time turkey hunter from Florida’s Lake County, had seen in three days of camping and hunting at Osceola Wildlife Management Area. Updike, not the least bit deterred by a challenging hunt, went back the next day, set up and harvested a mature gobbler. “Having my efforts pay off scouting, being patient and finding those areas on the WMA where others weren’t hunting gave me a huge sense of accomplishment,” Updike said. “I really enjoy putting my skills to the test on a WMA.” While he applies for spring turkey quota permits every year, his season always includes hunting areas where a quota permit isn’t required. He likes to hunt these walk-in hunting areas because it gives him more time to enjoy the solitude of the turkey woods, hear birds gobble and maybe see a tom put on a show. Jimmy Ingram of south Florida, who started turkey hunting in 2005, is also a fan of walkin hunting areas. He credits preseason prep for putting him in the right place at the right time. “Hunting non-quota permit areas like J.W. Corbett is where I cut my teeth on turkey hunting. While I always put in for quota hunts, hunting non-quota areas is where I do my learning. I spend a lot of time scouting, listening and walking before the season opens. I’ll roost birds, then go back the next morning and pattern them. It’s a challenge to hunt birds that see more pressure but it also helps me learn from and reduce mistakes.” Ingram’s other passions, ultrarunning and trail running, help him “get in the middle of nowhere” on a WMA. He often starts walking at 3:30 a.m. to where he wants to hunt. He uses a few other strategies to hunt walk-in WMAs such as hunting weekdays and waiting for the season opener north of State Road 70 to spread hunters out. Hunters willing to spend time scouting, put some miles on their boots and embrace the virtue of patience also can find success on walk-in hunting areas. While many WMAs offering spring turkey hunting require a quota permit, there are over 40 areas you can hunt even if you didn’t score a quota hunt permit. This is great news if you didn’t apply for or didn’t draw a spring turkey quota permit. If you were selected for quota hunt opportunities this year, you can extend your season by hunting no-quota permit areas. Don’t forget, season dates and other rules may vary from statewide seasons and other WMAs, so make sure you review the WMA regulations brochure for the area you want to hunt. You can find links to the WMAs listed below by visiting MyFWC.com/Turkey and clicking on “2021 Spring Turkey Hunt Guide.” It’s also a good idea to get into the habit of checking an area’s open/closed status to determine its availability to public access and if there are any road closures or updates about check stations or entrances. You can find this information by visiting MyFWC.com and clicking on the red button “WMA Closures and Updates.” No-quota permit WMAs to hunt Osceola wild turkeys • Big Bend WMA - Jena Unit • Big Cypress WMA • Green Swamp WMA • Herky Huffman/Bull Creek WMA • J.W. These licenses and permits can be purchased with a credit card at GoOutdoorsFlorida.com or by calling 888-HUNT-FLORIDA (4868356). They can also be purchased in Florida at county tax collectors’ offices and at most retail outlets that sell hunting/fishing supplies. The FWC also provides a list of areas you can take a youth hunting during Florida’s Youth Turkey Hunt Weekends, which occur Feb. 27-28, south of State Road 70, and March 13-14, north of State Road 70. These SaturdaySunday hunts are available to youth 15 years old and younger and occur on many WMAs and lands outside of the WMA system. Find a list of WMAs where a quota permit is not required at MyFWC.com/Turkey and click on “Youth Turkey Hunt Weekends.” For information about bag limits and other regulations for spring turkey season, go to MyFWC.com/Turkey and click on “2021 Spring Turkey Hunt Guide.”

PUTNAM COUNTY BASS WORLD LODGE 386-4672267 Mark and Blonde are catching bass using spinnerbaits and plastic worms. Jim caught an ell and a 5 pound catfish. One of their customers caught and released a 10 ½ pound bass last weekend. MESSER’S EAST-WEST BAIT & TACKLE 386-328-4035 Jimmy tells us they are catching some specks and shellcracker in Rodman at the dam and they are showing up in Lake Crescent and Dead Lake. Jiffy Jigs and minnows are the best baits. Flipping small jigs and jigs tipped with minnows flipped under the docks is still working well. Some nice bass are coming out of the River. Catfish are coming out of Dunn’s Creek. GEORGETOWN MARINA & LODGE 386-467-2002 Nolan tells us they are catching bass using plastic worms, flukes and frogs down in the Oklawaha River.

Getting Back to Business at ICAST 2021 This July, the world’s largest sportfishing trade show is headed back to Orlando This year marks the 64th consecutive recreational fishing trade show produced by the American Sportfishing Association (ASA) for its members and the recreational fishing industry. ICAST 2021 is scheduled for July 2023, in the North/South building at the Orange County Convention Center (OCCC) in Orlando, Fla. “While the health, safety and security of exhibitors and attendees continues to be our top priority,” emphasized

$595.00

ASA President Glenn Hughes, “we are all looking forward to getting back to business. Come July, we are confident that an in-person show where we can reconnect with one another will happen. Orlando and the OCCC has been home to ICAST for many years and we are excited to return.” Over the past 12 months, the Orange County Convention Center (OCCC) has been hosting a wide variety of meetings, events and trade shows, revising and improving their protocols to stay consistent with national and state health and safety guidelines. “In early January, I traveled to Orlando to attend Surf Expo to experience first-hand what our exhibitors and attendees should expect in a trade show environment,” said Trade Show and Membership Vice President Blake Swango. “I was very impressed with everything the OCCC team and our hotel partners were doing to implement health and safety protocols. Having this first-hand experience gave me great confidence that ICAST 2021 will move forward as planned.” The OCCC team produced a video that explains how they worked together with Surf Expo to create a safe and productive environment for a 2021 in-person trade show. All the elements that make ICAST the most anticipated annual event for the global sportfishing industry will be back this year: On the Water, the New Product Showcase, the Industry Breakfast, the Casting Pond and Lure Tank, business seminars and the excitement and energy of the show floor. More than 300 exhibitors have been assigned booths, with more in the pipeline. “Our member exhibitors told me they want to be there,” noted Swango. “From conversations with their reps and buyers, they know that the desire is there to do in-person business and to see all the new products available. In 2021, ICAST is the only venue that fills that need.” Attendee registration opens on March 15. All the information about ICAST 2021 is available on our website including detailed FAQs about health and safety protocols, the expo hall and food and beverage options.

LAKE COUNTY BASS N GAL GUIDE SERVICE 352267-0062 The Harris chain has been giving up some nice bass. With the cooler days and nights the specks have turned on and are being caught up in the grass using minnows or jigs tipped with minnows. My favorite colors are pinks and oranges. The baits that are working well for my customers are drop shots with a Junebug 4 inch worm, watermelon red Producto’s Hot Rod fished weightless and of course shiners, (freelined and with bobbers). A slow falling sinking weightless worm (Producto’s Hot Rod) or a white and chartreuse spinner bait reeled in as slowly as possible, are both working quite well.

He has pushing and pulling rods both. Prices start at $54. to $79. Fish are biting and he has plenty of bait in stock. He has in stock the War Horses by Gill Reaper lures. Jake has frog gigs in stock as well. He has set up a station where you can build your own jigs, spinnerbaits, buzzbaits and chatterbaits. Astor B & T has one of the best stocked crappie supplies shops around. Be sure to check out www.outdoorswithJake.com. LAKESIDE BAIT & TACKLE 352-742-3336. Heidi tells us the crappie are being caught using grass shrimp and minnows back in the grass and lily pads. Jigs in chartreuse and pink colors are working well. Mike Kirk has been catching some nice specks with Dog House jigs. Bass are moving in bedding and feeding right now. They are hitting top water in the mornings and flipping with darker colored baits. www.blackwaterinn.com

Robert at BROOKER BAIT & TACKLE 352-460-0695 said Big and Little Lake Harris are producing some nice specks offshore outside the grass using small imitation minnows with a 1/16th oz jig head. Lake Griffin’s specks are moving up into the grass. Live minnows are the bait of choice with some fish being caught on jigs under a bobber. Bass are being caught way off shore on Jack Hammer chatterbaits. 9th street Canal is producing some nice numbers of smaller bucks. Several catches are being reported using Alabama Rigs. A 9.4 pound lunker was weighed in and released on the South side of Lake Harris. Mike Meglino was the proud catcher.

386-252-8471 WWW.BUCKSGUNRACK.COM Buck’s Gun Rack was established in 1954 by Richard “Buck” Buckwald in Daytona Beach, Florida.

The business has remained under the same family ownership for over 64 years with the 2nd generation family members currently operating it. Buck moved down from New York in 1950 after returning home from WW II. He had a passion for firearms that started in the early years and through his time in the military. Buck’s used his personal collection to stock the store in the beginning. Originally called “The Gun Rack”, the name was later changed to “Buck’s Gun Rack”. The gun store was opened in the bottom half of the ground floor in its current location, then called Volusia Ave. Over the years the whole building was taken over. In 1979 Buck passed away after 25 years in the gun business at the age of 58. Buck’s Gun Rack gained new management from Buck’s two sons, Scott and Forrest, who continue to provide the area with the same great products and customer service that Buck’s had been known to deliver. Originally, Buck’s Gun Rack was a firearms and ammunition store that catered to the collector and hunting enthusiast, but over the years additional merchandise lines were added such as, Archery, Knives, Gun Safes, and Police Equipment. Buck’s carries over 1,500 firearms in stock including such brand names as Smith & Wesson, Colt, Ruger, Glock, Sig Sauer, Browning, H&K, Walther, Remington, Savage, Weatherby, Mossberg and more. Buck’s is the areas only ‘Archery Pro Shop’ with an experienced bow technician on staff and carry the area’s largest selection of PSE Archery and accessories. Buck’s is well known as the place with one of the area’s best knife selections, with many models to choose from brands that include Buck, Gerber, CRKT, Kershaw, Boker, S&W, and other well-known brands. From pocket knives to survival and hunting knives, there is no better selection.

Turkey Season opens on March 20th each year and runs through May 5th. We have 5,500 of prime turkey woods with a mixture of river bottoms, pine ridges and lots of food plots planted with chuffas, the turkey’s favorite. Our seasoned guides are very familiar with our properties and are very personable and experienced. While on your turkey hunt , if you would like to sit for a wild hog in the afternoon, you are allowed to take one hog during the three day hunt for no extra charge. We have lots of them and some really big ones. We can hunt hogs year round and some of our most productive hunts this past year took place in May, June and July. We have plenty of land now with hogs to be able to hunt large groups, up to 10. We can even accommodate bow groups that large. Hogs are very smart animals, don’t come thinking they are just dumb farm animals. This is a fun hunt for all who just do not want to quit hunting after their deer season closes.
