K

ayak fishing has become one of the most popular forms of fishing over the

last 10 years and its easy to see why. Its cheaper and easier to maintain than owning a boat, having to do little to no maintenance. In a kayak you can get into areas that are not accessible by boat where there is little to no pressure on the fish. You can launch from just about anywhere you want. January and February are still great months to fish from a kayak for redfish. Before I get into fishing for redfish in the winter months here are a few facts about the species. ·The redfish (Sciaenops ocellatus) is the only species in its genus, which sets it apart from the other fish commonly known as “drum.” ·The world-record redfish—a 94-pound 2-ounce behemoth—was caught off Hatteras, North Carolina in 1984, while the fly-caught record is a 43-pounder from Florida’s Banana River Lagoon in 1995. ·Red drum is a fast growing fish reaching approximately 11 inches and one pound in its first year, 17-22 inches and 3 1/2 pounds in two years, and 22-24 inches and 6-8 pounds in three years. In the months of January and February you have to pick your days accordingly. The days following the cold fronts when the temps start to climb back into the mid 60s and 70s are ideal for having a great day on the water. Find the creeks and coves that are protected from the harsh north winds, for these waters don’t get churned up and cooled down as fast as the areas that aren’t protected from those winds. What I like to do is get on google maps and find the creeks and coves that are protected better than the surrounding waters. Mill creek, fozzards creek and spruce creek areas are really good in the winter months. SSFHMagazine Jan/Feb 2019 Page 11

Once you have found the area you want to fish find any shell or dark mud bottom you can and start working these areas (dark bottom and oyster beds heat up faster and hold heat longer). Low tide in the middle of the day is the best time to fish during the winter months. There are two go to lures that I like to fish with for the redfish, flounder DOA gold or zman new penny paddle tails on a 3/16 oz jig head or the white gulp swimming mullet on the same jig head, when working these lures in the winter months be sure to slow down your presentation and put a little twitch in the retrieve every now and again. Stay off the back about 20 feet and work the waters parallel to the bank casting closer to the bank first and working your way out with every cast then move up 10 feet and repeat. The water in the winter time clears up really nice in the protected areas that I explained earlier so standing up in you kayak and site casting to these redfish helps a lot. It’s also important with the clear water to slim down the size leader that you are using, I like to fish 20lb but on the really clear days I find myself having to scale down to 15lb leader. If you’re into using live bait live finger mullet on the bottom around the oyster beds is your best bet. Use a small 1⁄4 oz or 1⁄2 oz sinker with about a 18 inch leader to a 1/0 or 2/0 hook. Jeremy Farlow is co owner of Salty Dawg Outfitters bait shop in Ponce Inlet and has been kayak fishing for 6 years and a kayak fishing guide in the Daytona and Port Orange area for the last 4 years. To book a kayak fishing tour please contact Salty Dawg Outfitters at 386763-3311. Or simply stop in the shop located at 4958 S. Peninsula Dr Ponce Inlet Fl 32127.

BREVARD COUNTY

By: Tim Camp

I

t’s 85 degrees here and muggy, tomorrow it’s going to rain for the majority of the day, and the next morning it’s going to be a frigid 52(might as well be freezing for us Florida grown folk) That’s right winter is hear finally a nice reprieve from the grueling dog days of summer that seems to ride right through fall. With the drop in temperatures hunters are finally getting some great movement out of those cunning big bucks around here in Brevard. And if the weather doesn’t have those bucks moving, the dogs sure will as most hunters in North Brevard are eagerly in full swing of dog season. Now folks if you’re new to hunting or unaware, no ones hunting dogs around here it’s just a sporting way to round up the deer by using the dogs to jump the deer from where they reside. So as this hunting season soon comes to an end, we are already getting word of nice size shrimp running moderately from north Brevard so get those shrimp nets dusted off and make sure to test your lights out before getting out there with 6 lights and one works (no that’s never happened to me).... On another note if your new to hunting and eager for the hunting experience look into websites like (myfwc.com) to get dates of local wild life management areas that are open to public for small game. Please of course be sure you’re familiar with gun safety and have a valid hunting license as well as a wildlife management permit, which you can purchase online or I highly recommend this AMAZING Outdoor and local hardware shop in Mims called D&E Oudoors. So with that tip of the week good luck and Merry Christmas and have a Happy New Year! Until next time High Tines & Tight Lines Tim Camp

LAKE COUNTY BASS N GAL GUIDE SERVICE at 352267-0062 – The private lake we fish is all catch and release but is loaded with some big bass. The baits that work well for my customers on this lake are drop shots with a Junebug 4 inch worm, watermelon red Producto’s Hot Rods fished weightless and of course shiners, (freelined and with bobbers). The local small lakes are producing some nice sized bass. Freelining a shiner (without a bobber or weight) is still producing some of the bigger fish. A slow falling sinking weightless worm (Producto’s Hot Rod works great) or a white and chartreuse spinner bait reeled in as slowly as possible, are both working quite well. Be sure to lift up on your rod tip occasionally then let the spinnerbait slowly fall to make it look like a fluttering bait fish. If you think you are fishing too slow, slow down even more. These baits can produce some huge bass but they have to be worked very slowly. (You want to feel the blades pulling or turning) Use the drop shot method, this is very productive if you are a patient fisherman. For the fishing trip you’ve dreamed of give me a call @ 352-267-0062. Jake at ASTOR BAIT & TACKLE at 352-759-2600 tells us the bass are still biting. Vexan has introduced a new combo and Jake has them in stock. He has an 8 footer for $49.99; 10 ft jigging rod is $54.99 and 12 ft. trolling rod which is $59.99 and a 14 ft. trolling rod which is $64.99 and a 16 ft. trolling rod for $69.99. He now has an 18 ft. rod for $74.99. He has set up a station where you can build your own jigs, spinnerbaits, buzzbaits and chatterbaits. Be sure to check out www.outdoorswithJake.com. Kalen of BROOKER BAIT & TACKLE at 352-460-0695 said they have been catching some nice bass as it is prespawn. They are being caught using chatterbaits, worms and spinnerbaits fishing around the hydrilla. The mouths of the creeks are producing some nice bass. Nice specks are being caught using jigs tipped with minnows out of Lake Dora, Lake Griffin, and Beauclair.

Hunting News By Tony Young

Media Relations Coordinator for the Division of Hunting and Game Management.

experienced my first Florida duck hunt.”

Florida offers unique waterfowl hunting opportunities “When people from out of state think about Florida, often the first things that come to mind are the state’s beautiful beaches and Disney World,” said Matt Coffey, senior communications specialist for Ducks Unlimited. “And I myself used to think the same thing – until I

Coffey had an opportunity last year to hunt waterfowl at central Florida’s T.M. Goodwin Waterfowl Management Area. “I didn’t realize how vast the estuaries and wetlands are and how much waterfowl habitat there is in Florida,” Coffey said. “Florida waterfowl hunters have great opportunities, especially with duck species like the black-bellied whistling duck and the fulvous whistling duck, where populations in the U.S. mainly occur in Texas, Louisiana and Florida. Hunting Florida mottled ducks is a totally unique experience because the only place in the world they exist is the Florida peninsula.” Coffey also said he appreciates the fact that even in winter, temperatures are usually moderate and comfortable. Plus, there’s so much to do in the Sunshine State. “The group I was with hunted teal, pintails and mottled ducks in the morning, snipe at midday, and then we fished for tarpon in the Intracoastal in the afternoon,” Coffey said. “Some of them even slipped off to enjoy the beach! Where else can you do all that in a day?” Waterfowl hunting guide Check out the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s (FWC) Guide to Waterfowl Hunting in Florida at MyFWC.com/Duck. It’s a valuable resource that lists where duck hunting is available, decoy placement setups, scouting and hunting tips, and provides duck identification photos of most duck species you’re likely to see in Florida. Waterfowl seasons and license requirements Waterfowl and coot season runs through Jan. 27 statewide. In addition to a hunting license, duck hunters also need a Florida waterfowl permit, federal duck stamp and migratory bird permit. And if you’re hunting on a WMA, you’ll also need a management area permit and maybe a quota permit. All licenses and permits are available at GoOutdoorsFlorida.com, county tax collectors’ offices or license agents, or by calling 888-HUNT-FLORIDA (888-486-8356). Bag limits The daily bag limit on ducks is six. But there may be only one mottled duck and one fulvous whistling duck; only two may be canvasbacks, black ducks, scaup, pintails or redheads; and only three may be wood ducks. And you may have no more than four scoters, four eiders, four long-tailed ducks and four mallards (of which only two may be female) in your bag. The daily limit on coots is 15, and there’s a five-bird limit on mergansers, only two of which may be hooded. You also may take light geese statewide during the waterfowl and coot season, which includes the taking of snow, blue and Ross’s geese. There’s a 15-bird daily bag limit on any combination of these geese. Waterfowl hunting regulations Shooting hours are one-half hour before sunrise to sunset. Shotguns must be plugged to a three-shell capacity (magazine and chamber combined), and hunters may use only nontoxic shot – iron (steel), bismuth-tin and tungsten alloys. Ducks Unlimited and FWC partnership In 2017, Ducks Unlimited, the FWC and others partnered to conserve, improve and restore nearly 30,000 acres of wetland habitat in Florida. “The partnership between the FWC and DU is making an important difference in Florida,” Coffey said. “The FWC identifies local areas that need the most help, and DU delivers sound wetland restoration that benefits both Florida’s wildlife and people.”

What you need to know about hunting deer, elk, moose and caribou out of state It’s critical you know if chronic wasting disease (CWD) has been detected in the state you’re hunting. CWD is a contagious neurological disease that causes deer to die. CWD has NOT been detected in Florida. Help prevent CWD from entering our state by knowing and adhering to the following regulations: If you’re hunting deer, elk, moose, caribou or any other cervid in any state or Canadian province where CWD has been detected, you can only bring back: • Deboned meat • Finished taxidermy mounts • Cleaned skulls, antlers and hides (all meat must be removed) In Florida, if you encounter sick deer or those found dead of unknown causes, report them to our toll-free CWD Hotline at 866CWD-WATCH (293-9282). Learn more about CWD: MyFWC.com/CWD.

View quota permits on Fish|Hunt FL app Now you can view and store quota and limited entry permits on the FWC’s Fish|Hunt FL app! Click on “My Licenses and Permits” on the home screen, then select “Limited Entry” to access your limited entry and quota hunts. You also can view your general hunting and fishing licenses and permits by clicking “Licenses.” While some hunts still require you to have a permit or tags in hand, this is another way to keep up with your licenses and permits. For quota permits that allow you to bring a guest, please print the guest permit from your account at GoOutdoorsFlorida.com. Download the Fish|Hunt App on Apple or Android smart phones or tablets from the App Store and Google Play.

Registration open for learn-to-hunt event for adults Do you know an adult who is interested in learning to hunt? The New Hunters Weekend held Jan. 18-20, 2019, in northwest Florida provides an educational, mentored introduction to hunting. This event, hosted by the Future of Hunting in Florida, uses expert instructors to teach adult participants about hunter safety, scouting, deer behavior, conservation and how to field dress and prepare venison. Participants will have the opportunity to experience hunting with a mentor. The New Hunters Weekend also features a great opportunity to connect with nature in a rustic camp setting that provides comforts afforded by a generator. There is no cost for the hunt, though, each participant is asked to donate $40 to help pay for meals. New hunters also must have a valid hunting or hunting mentor license. To reserve a spot, contact John Fuller at johndfullerpa@comcast.net or call 850-509-4099. Find more information about how to get started hunting. SSFHMagazine Jan/Feb 2019 Page 41

New Hunter Hunting is a safe, relaxing and exciting way for friends and family to spend time together while experiencing Florida’s natural beauty. Every hunting adventure is an opportunity to gain new understanding about wildlife and their habitats, while building important outdoor skills. And when the trip afield is successful, it means prolonging those treasured memories by cooking healthy, locally-sourced meals.

Megan Smith harvested this 8 point from the Samsula area.

Hunting is so much more than the harvest, though. Hunters support conservation in a variety of ways. The purchase of a hunting license directly supports conservation and also contributes in a less obvious way. Every hunting license that’s bought is factored into a formula that determines the amount of Wildlife Restoration grant funding a state receives. The more Florida licenses purchased, the more money from shooting sports industries and participants that comes directly back to Florida for conservation. Many hunters also participate in on-theground conservation projects. They also serve as the eyes and ears in the field, providing the FWC with important information about what’s happening in the most remote parts of the state. They report on habitat conditions and fish and wildlife violations, helping the agency protect and conserve Florida’s natural resources. As a new hunter, you’ll be a part of this proud tradition of hunterconservationists while treasuring opportunities to see wildlife in their natural habitat, experience the woods waking up at sunrise, and sharing stories with friends and family around the campfire.
