The last 2 months haven’t been the easiest fishing. Cold Fronts have been on and off weekly making the fish very lethargic and slow to eat. Sheephead and Black Drum have been pretty thick and eating well. Using Shrimp, Fiddler Crabs, and Sand Fleas as the baits of choose to target these species. As we ease towards Spring. The water will warm up and the fish will start migrating as our season really kicks off. Starting off with Cobia for Nearshore and mahi for Offshore. Spring is my favorite time of year for fishing. If you want to learn how to catch a Cobia. Book a charter with Capt Bruno as this is my Favorite fish to target no doubt.

StateRecordSeatroutGobble Z-Man® ElaZtech® Bait Ladson, SC (February 16, 2022) – Todd Spangler’s morning started off with one big bite and a tidal wave of high-fives. Approximately 8am on Wednesday, February 9, Spangler hooked a new North Carolina state record spotted seatrout the biggest of the species landed on hook and line in 61 years. A few hours after officially weighing the monster inshore specimen, Spangler and his friend Josh Hamby returned to the water for a few more casts.

A phosphate miner and veteran inshore saltwater angler from Merritt, North Carolina, Spangler hooked the 12-pound 8-ounce seatrout on a 4-inch Z-Man Scented Jerk ShadZ and 1/8-ounce HeadlockZ HD jighead. The recordbreaking trout, which measured 33-1/2-inches with an 18-inch girth, bested the previous, six-decade-old state record caught at Wrightsville Beach by four ounces. “It was our first bite of the day,” recalls Spangler, who was fishing a creek mouth on the Neuse River when something cracked his ‘Dark N Stormy’ pattern Jerk ShadZ. “I’d been retrieving the bait ThelightedfishingpieratGranadaPierBait&TackleinOrmond Beach. by popping it up and letting it fall back to the bottom trying to imitate a shrimp when I felt a sharp little thump, almost for n i p right below the boat. “A few minutes into the fight, we saw a broad silvery flash, which further fooled us into thinking striper,” Spangler said. “This time of year, we’re mostly targeting seatrout, which bunch up in big numbers in these creeks during the winter. We often catch redfish and stripers, too, but striper season is closed.” Con’t on pg 10

386-345-0746 Spangler said the fish pulled with a force and ferocity he’d never experienced in a seatrout. In North Carolina, all harvested spotted seatrout must measure at least 14-inches. A member of the drum (Sciaenidae) family, seatrout offer exceptional sport along the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts. Known for its prominent canine teeth, distinct black spots, A Z-Man Jerk ShadZ (Dark N Stormy) HeadlockZHDJigheadcombo and an elongated dorsal fin, the produced the state record trout. seatrout remains one of the most popular inshore sportfish in North America.

“It was really bulldogging, doing big powerful head shakes. But, other than one big surface boil, mostly it stayed down and never gave us a good look. Just kept pulling the whole time maybe 5 or 6 minutes before I saw what it was. When I finally realized it was a monster trout, I got pretty excited and ordered Josh to grab the net. Man, I was so pumped and that was before we even had a clue the fish was a potential record breaker. I’d never seen a trout like that before. Just an absolute giant.” As the anglers marveled at the enormous trout in the net, curiosity compelled them to weigh the fish on Spangler’s old digital scale. “The readout showed 12.52 pounds,” noted Spangler. “But we weren’t sure that cheap old scale was giving an accurate weight. Josh looked up the current state record on his phone and I knew by his expression that we might have a special trout on board.” They decided to quickly load the boat and drive to Neuse River Bait & Tackle in nearby Grantsboro. “We weighed the fish on a certified scale there, which also read exactly 12.52 pounds. Then, we had to wait almost three hours for a state biologist to arrive and certify its official size (12.50 pounds.) We had every intention of releasing the fish and did everything we could to keep it alive in aerated, saltwater bait tanks, but unfortunately, it just didn’t survive.” Spangler, who builds his own tackle, caught the monster trout on a custommade 6-foot 6-inch medium action spinning rod. “I’d just finished building that rod a week before catching the fish. It has a lot of sentimental value. My dad and I took a rod-building course about ten years ago. Today, I only fish rods I build myself.”

At the end of his line was one of Spangler’s favorite inshore saltwater baits. “I’ll often tie on a single Jerk ShadZ at the start of a trip and catch fish with it all day long,” he said. “Four or five outings later, I’ve still got the same bait on the hook. That’s how tough these ElaZtech® baits are. And I sort of believe they get better as fish put little tears and rips in the material. Cont on pg 12

Heck, I’ll even pull a little section of the plastic up from the head and thread it over the jighead eye, which holds the bait into place, even after it’s gotten pretty torn up. No way you can do that with other plastics.” For added attraction, Spangler occasionally re-applies Pro-Cure scent to his Jerk ShadZ. “These baits are prescented with Pro-Cure. It soaks right into the material like a sponge. But once it wears off after an hour or so, I’ll add a few more drops. Sticks to the bait like glue.” Confident in certain, favorite bait colors, Spangler caught his record trout on Z-Man’s special Dark N Stormy hue, a pattern concocted by Z-Man pro Captain C.A. Richardson. “It’s sort of an electric purple color with silver flake that just lights up and comes alive in the water,” Spangler observes. “I’ve caught a lot of fish on that pattern on the Jerk ShadZ, as well as the 3-inch MinnowZ™ and larger DieZel MinnowZ™.” To effectively deliver the Jerk ShadZ, Spangler used a 3/0 1/8-ounce Z-Man HeadlockZ HD™ jighead. “I like that particular jighead because its keeper pins the bait to the hook and holds it in place better than anything I’ve tried. I’m also a big fan of Eye Strike Trout Eye™ jigs, which have these great big fish-attracting eyes.” No sooner had a North Carolina state fisheries biologist certified the trout as the new state record, Spangler and his buddy decided to return to the water for a few more casts— further cementing his status as a legit, hardcore angler. “I work 12 hour shifts and put in a lot of overtime,” says Spangler. “I’m lucky, my wife and two kids let me fish 2 or 3 times a week.”

Discovering Home with Haley & Jeremy Scott Founders of Ponce Inlet Fishing Charter Network Nestled in the heart of Port Orange, Ponce Inlet Fishing Charter Network was founded by locals Haley & Jeremy Scott in 2021. With a vision of what the Fishing Charter business could look like in the Social Age, they custom built the Facebook group (Ponce Inlet Fishing Charter Network) and media company behind it (Fish Witch Media) to encompass all that is charter fishing in the Ponce Inlet area. Jeremy, a third generation Port Orange fisherman & seasoned mate (most notably Critter Fleet’s final first mate), spent his entire life fishing in the waters surrounding Ponce Inlet. Growing up here he spent his days shrimping in the river with his Grandfather Michael Scott, floundering at night with his Father Albert Scott, and fishing the flat bridge, Inlet & Riverside with his many friends. His dream has always been to Captain his own boat, starting with the bow-rigged flounder boat he custom built from a shell back in 2019. One day he hopes to be one of the charter boats featured in the group they have built together. Although Haley did not grow up here, she was born here & returned 10 years ago to discover her true home and reconnect with family. Her father, Robert (Bobby K) Kiecksee, was a skilled boat mechanic and restaurant manager (The Oyster Pub). He spent his life putting down roots here, enjoying the outdoors, fishing, and surfing in Ponce Inlet. Returning home Haley found a deep love for the ocean as it offers her a closer connection to her father, who passed away in 2019. For years Haley managed & maintained her own news website, and has always had an interest in covering local events. She has her mother Katrina to thank for that, as she grew up watching her do promotional work for local events. Katrina (Rock-Pit Tina) was also one of the first Music Video Jockeys in NJ for Hit Records TV, before the birth of MTV. Given the pairs long family history in the area, they plan on staying & raising their family in Port Orange. They have four children; an eldest daughter named Julia, their oldest son Tristan, and identical twin boys River & Dexter. Through their passion and hard work they hope to inspire the same love for fishing & boating in their children, and in the future generations to come. Both Haley & Jeremy invite you to check out what they have spent the last year building, and to help them expand the idea to a larger audience base locally. Tailor fitting the idea to the many Captains & fishing enthusiasts in the area, they hope to help everyone stay better connected in the new age of fishing by bringing all necessary information to one convenient location. www.FishWitchMedia.com FacebookGroup:PonceInletFishingCharter k Networ

Catch a Florida Memory in the prime of springtime Springtime means tight lines for many anglers. With winter in the rearview, more and more people are chasing saltwater excursions that involve fishing. From surf fishing to offshore expeditions, there are opportunities for everyone to catch a Florida memory! You don’t even need a boat to access exciting on-the-water adventures. With an abundance of options to choose from, we are going to dive into some easy and unique ways that you can make your own Florida memory this year. Fishing from Shore: Fishing from shore is the act of fishing from land or mindfully wading into the water to catch fish with a rod and reel. This option is appealing as all Florida residents can get a shoreline license at little to no cost. This licensure allows anglers to fish from land or from structures attached to land, so long as the angler is not trespassing on private property. Learn more at MyFWC. com/License, and discover how and where to fish by visiting MyFWC.com/Fishing and clicking “Learn to Fish.” While sandy beaches are most common, anglers may also opt to fish from rock jetties and fishing piers as well. Rock jetties provide structure that many species of fish are attracted to. On the other hand, fishing from piers often allows the angler to access deeper waters and possibly catch a wider range of species. Fish frequently caught from shore include: kingfish (whiting), saltwater catfish, seatrout, Florida pompano, black drum, flounder and redfish. It is important to have the correct rig set up for this type of fishing. A few recommended setups including the bottom-surf rig and fishfinder rig can be found MyFWC.com/FishingLines in the fishing rigs section. When using these rigs, live and frozen baits including shrimp and baitfish are great options. Use circle hooks when fishing with natural baits to reduce the chance of gut hooking a fish. If a fish is gut hooked and you need to release it, cut the line as close to the hook as possible. Using non-stainless-steel hooks will allow hooks left in the fish to deteriorate faster. Additionally, you should crimp the barb down on your hooks to allow for faster and easier hook removal. For more information on how to crimp the barb of your hook watch this short video from MyFWC.com/Saltwater Fishing or visit MyFWC. com/FishHandling. If you’re interested in targeting sharks while fishing from shore, be sure that you get your Shore Based Shark Fishing permit before your fishing adventure begins! Fishing from Paddlecraft: Fishing from paddlecraft allows anglers to reach locations that would otherwise be inaccessible from land. In Florida, anglers frequently fish both inshore and offshore in paddlecraft. Novice anglers should stick to paddling inshore and only go offshore once they become more experienced. For their safety, anglers fishing from paddlecraft should always be considerate of all other vessels on the water. Great locations to fish inshore include saltmarsh creeks, mangrove shorelines, seagrass flats, oyster bars, bays and estuaries. Fishing from paddlecraft allows anglers to explore new and exciting locations to target various species of fish while enjoying the peaceful serenity of being on the water. PUTNAM COUNTY Tips from the Pros for Largemouth Bass
By: Capt Lynda Hawkins
Weareaauthorizedservicecenterforsuzukiengines
Flipping Tips Brian Coleman, FLW Pro Flipping is intended for pinpoint presentation to visible, thick cover between 10 and 25 feet away. I use a heavy-action Vexan, I prefer a 7'4" H to 7'10" XH rod. Use 40- to 85-pound braided line, such as SpiderWire, for bait casting rods; downsize your line on spinning reels for smaller baits (like finesse baits) or during cold fronts. Let out about 7 feet of line. With your free hand, grasp the line between the reel and the first rod guide and straighten your arm to the side. There should now be about 7 feet of line past the front tip. Raise the rod to make the lure swing back close to your body.

As the lure moves past the rod tip, continue raising the rod as you feed line with your free hand. As the lure nears the water, lower the rod tip again and make the bait touch down precisely on target by stopping the bait just before it enters the water. Tighten your drag all the way for increased hookset ratios & when you think there’s a strike, reel down until your rod is in hookset position before setting the hook. One last tip from a pro, use scent when trying to penetrate thick cover it acts as a lubricant to allow the bait to ease into the cover.
LocatingFloridabassbyJayYelas, 2002 Bassmaster Classic Champion, 2007 FLW Angler of the Year Because many Florida lakes have little or no bottom contour changes, the key to finding fish here often lies in interpreting weedlines and bottom composition. I look for places where the hydrilla thins out into patchy, scattered clumps. I stay away from the thick hydrilla beds. Bass prefer hydrilla that is not too thick. If you know how to interpret a good sonar unit, you will be able to find areas of the bottom that are harder than others. Some of these hard bottom spots are shell beds. Bass always prefer a hard bottom. Hard bottom areas adjacent to the outside edge of hydrilla are very good.

Eight- through 10-weight flyfishing outfits can handle throwing
SPRING big poppers and deerhair bugs, and turning big bass from cover. BASS Conventional anglers can cover a lot of water with paddle-tailed TerryGibson plastic buzzbaits. Walking plugs work well, as do frog imitations. Visit Florida & Fishing Insider, Editorial Director, Fly & Light Tackle Angler Magazine
During the heat of the day, find deeper structure and switch to Texas- or Carolina-rigged plastic worms. Fish em’ sloooow, and hang on.
In early spring, I shift focus to bass and panfish fishing, mostly in the Everglades. I love to flyfish with popping bugs, and throw surface lures on plug gear. By April, shellcrackers and bluegills are on the bed, and when they’re not you find them along canal banks or the outside of vegetation lines in open lakes. Water levels are typically lower, so fish are concentrated. Best of all, water temps are warm enough throughout the state for bass to blast anything that resembles food. In April and May, especially on cloudy days, water temps remain just cool enough that fish will sometimes feed on top all day long. The morning and evening bites last all summer. This is a great time to get kids hooked on fishing – maybe the best in terms of sheer action and building a foundation of fishing skills. Our parents started my sister and me out with ultra-light spinning gear, slinging Beetle Spins at shorelines. Once we got that tactic down, they put fly rods in our hands. Mom wanted panfish for fried fish dinners served with collard greens and cheese grits. Yum! But for sport we loved the acrobatic little schoolie bass that gang up in huge numbers this time of the year.

LAKE COUNTY BASS N GAL GUIDE SERVICE @ 352267-0062 It’s that time of year again, the crappie are biting and are being caught out of the lily pads and grass on minnow or jigs tipped with minnows. Several nice limits are reported. Norbert & Pam caught 25 the other day and Henry and Louise caught 20. We are catching a few bass on the Harris chain using topwater, swimming worms and crank baits. A slow falling sinking weightless worm or a chrome blue or green Rat-L-Trap reeled in as slowly as possible, are both working quite well. Remember bedding fish are the future of our fishing so release any that look like they could be bedding. For the fishing trip you’ve dreamed of give me a call.
