March/April Fishing has Not been the easiest fishing. Every day has been different and challenging. Every week we managed to deal with continuous cold fronts which have kept us inshore. Very windy and rainy.

In the spring of 2020, when many other businesses were struggling, The Fishin’ Hole had folks lined up outside the door. Fishing a fresh-air activity offering plenty of elbow room was enjoying a run, and Gene Lytwyn hooked some keepers inside the shop he and wife Lisa have owned since 1989. “It was crazy busy,” he says. “Off the charts. We had to put a sign on the door saying no more than 10 people in the store at a time.” Lisa recalls many newbies from that bizarre period of time.“A lot of them had never fished before,” she says. “After the stress of that first month, it was like they said, ‘I’m taking up this hobby I’ve always wanted to take up.’ So you had a lot of people coming in who never fished a day in their lives.” And, for some of those folks . . .“Fishing has become a regular thing,” Gene says. Pay Attention To The Details
Technological advances have no doubt benefited hunters in the field. Contributing to filled tags, fuller freezers, and more taxidermy bills. However, one must not rely on technology alone. Cell phones, electric bikes, cell cameras, google maps. The list goes on and on. I would like to layout my thoughts for successful hunting. I believe if you take care of the little things, the big things will take care of themselves. No doubt, I appreciate and utilize the above mentioned tools. However, we must not forget the basics. Scent control, wind direction, entry/exit/ routes are but just a few.
Mason Stovall
Possibly, my number one rule, “no no”, whatever you want to call it. I personally, never wear my hunting boots while driving. I hunt in rubber boots. They keep my feet dry, warm, easy to slip on/off, and are scent free. I always spray them with scent away before putting them on as well. I keep them in the back of my truck in their own personal tote. When we visit the gas station, we are inevitably stepping in gas around the pumps. We then are transferring those fumes/ scents to our floor mats, gas and brake pedals. That unwanted scent is then transferred back to the soles of our “scent free” hunting boots. I strive to keep my hunting sets as scent free and “under the radar” as possible. I never want deer to know they are being pursued or pressured. Although sometimes nearly impossible, I try to avoid brushing against any vegetation walking in. Especially the last 50 yards or so. I’ve observed cautious bucks stopping and smelling everything in their path from head high to the ground. I believe it is a good idea to get your stands hung as early as possible. Trimming shooting lanes, entry/exit routes to your stand. Then, allow things to settle down. Avoid walking on active deer trails. Especially, those around your stands. Two things that I key in on are scrapes and acorns. While scouting, I often stop and listen for the sounds of falling acorns hitting cabbage palms or palmettos. I have found active feeding trees using this simple technique. Deer will feed thru out the day on this preferred food source. One thing that is always in my pack is a tube of Branch Butter from Black Widow Deer Lures. I like to apply to licking branches over the scrapes. It contains preorbital and forehead gland in gel form. It acts as an attractant as well as a calming effect. It is my favorite scent. Always avoid touching the licking branches with bare hands. I asked my son Mason what he thinks the two most important factors are for success. He replied patience and practice. Those indeed are very important. We often go in with a target buck in mind. I find it easier to sit when I know there is a particular big buck frequenting the area. Sitting still is also very critical. Deer pick up on sudden movements. Being proficient with the bow and having confidence are a must. My son Mason is an accomplished archer well beyond his years. He has a State Champion belt buckle to show. We both enjoy competing in the off season on the ASA and Florida 3D circuits. Shoot often and aim small miss small. We like to practice at longer ranges. This seems to make the average shots a little easier. For hunting, we spin test every arrow with the broadhead. Scalpel sharp blades are a must. An entire article can be written on arrow setups. Personally, a 475 grain arrow with an FOC of around 18% is a great arrow build. Tipped with a reputable broadhead will penetrate well. Creating that critical low exit hole for better blood trails. These are just a few things that when combined, can create higher success rates. I hope this article finds everyone well and looking forward to the upcoming season. Remember to be courteous to others and leave nothing behind but footprints.

FWC enhances Lake George and SilverGlenSpringbyplantingeelgrass The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), in partnership with Clearwater Marine Aquarium, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and U.S. Forest Service, is beginning a project to plant eelgrass, a native freshwater aquatic plant, in Lake George and Silver Glen Spring to enhance fish and wildlife habitat. Lake George historically had thousands of acres of submersed native plants, mainly comprised of eelgrass, which provided important habitat for a variety of fish and wildlife species including manatees. However, this submersed habitat disappeared in Lake George and Silver Glen Spring following Hurricane Irma and has not reestablished. This year’s planting efforts have been scaled up from past years. Two large enclosures were built to protect more than 2 acres of lake bottom that will be planted with eelgrass. Approximately 400 feet of Silver Glen shoreline will also be planted. Eelgrass is planted within fenced enclosures to protect the new plants until they become established. These planted areas will provide many ecological benefits and are important to the continued restoration of these systems. In addition to providing food and habitat for fish and wildlife, eelgrass also enhances water quality. For more information about this project, contact Dan Kolterman with the FWC’s Aquatic Habitat Conservation and Restoration Section at 352-800-5024 or Dan. Kolterman@MyFWC.com.

SEMINOLE-ORANGE COUNTY Governor Ron DeSantis Announces 57-Day 2022 Gulf Red Snapper Recreational Season Governor Ron DeSantis announced the 2022 Gulf red snapper recreational season which will total 57 days, the longest season since the state assumed management of red snapper and will include both a summer and fall season. Those fishing from private recreational vessels in state and federal waters in the Gulf and charter vessels without a federal reef fish permit who are limited to fishing in state waters will be able to participate in the 2022 Gulf red snapper season. “Snapper season is one of the most exciting times to be fishing in Florida, and I am excited to announce the longest season since the state took over management of red snapper,” said Governor Ron DeSantis. “People travel from all over to enjoy the recreational opportunities we have in Florida that can’t be found anywhere else. Florida is proud to continue providing access and opportunities to all who want to experience the Fishing Capital of the World.” The 45-day summer season will begin on June 17 and continue through July 31. The 12-day fall season is the longest fall season since the beginning of state management and spans the following dates:

“Gulf red snapper season is a harvest opportunity that Florida residents eagerly anticipate each year,” said Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission Director Eric Sutton. “Our agency looks forward to providing multiple days of red snapper harvest opportunities in Gulf state and federal waters this season.” “Up here in the Panhandle, the red snapper is one of our most important fisheries,” said Justin Leake, Owner, Panama City Inshore. “We want to thank you Governor for not only helping to manage these fisheries but also, your clean water initiatives. What you are doing right now is going to help us have access to these fisheries and ensure that they are here for our kids as well.” Con’t on next Pg.

Con’t 2022 Gulf Red Snapper Recreational Season “For decades we have been proud to be known as the worlds luckiest fishing village,” said Jennifer Adams, Director, Okaloosa County Tourist Development. “And as you stand here today in Destin Harbor, you can see why. The impact of fishing extends far beyond our docks. This past year visitors spent more than $736 million in our community and that money goes directly back to the local economy.” If you plan to fish for red snapper in state or federal waters from a private recreational vessel, even if you are exempt from fishing license requirements, you must sign up as a State Reef Fish Angler (annual renewal required) at GoOutdoorsFlorida.com.

BASS N GAL GUIDE SERVICE @ 352-267-0062 Specks are still being caught on the Harris Chain in open water drifting if you can get out with the wind we’ve been having. We are catching a few bass on the Harris chain using topwater, swimming worms and crank baits. A slow falling sinking weightless worm or a chrome blue or green Rat-L-Trap reeled in as slowly as possible, are both working quite well. Gordon at BROOKER BAIT & TACKLE @352-460-0695 said they are starting to catch shellcracker using crickets and worms. One of his customers recently caught and released an 8 pounder out of Big Lake Harris. Bill and Natalie went to Yankeetown and caught a nice limit of trout. Brookers has a well stocked shop and expert knowledge on the current fishing, both freshwater and saltwater. They also carry frozen salt water bait. Laurie of LAKESIDE BAIT & TACKLE @ 352-742-3336 tells us bluegill and shellcracker are on fire out of Dead River, Haines Creek, Lake Dora, Beauclair and Carlton, using grass shrimp, redworms and crickets. Spring/Summer Wild Hog Hunting
The FWC offers late spring and summer wild hog hunting opportunities on wildlife management areas (WMAs) across the state. While many of the WMAs don’t require a quota permit for spring and summer wild hog hunting, some of them do. So be sure to review the WMA regulations brochure for the area you want to hunt. Also, a hunting license isn’t needed to hunt wild hogs at a WMA, however, a management area permit is required. Visit: myfwc.com/hunting/wild-hog/ for more information on WMA’s near you.
