DaysOpen7aWeek FishNationalYourForests What do forests have to do with fishing and boating? A lot. The nation’s 154 national forests contain literally thousands of fishable and boatable lakes, not to mention abundant streams and rivers. In that spirit, the Future Angler Foundation (FAF) collaborated with Into the Outdoors/ Discover Mediaworks to create a PBS segment specific to maximizing your outdoor opportunities in our national forests. The outstanding episode didn’t go unnoticed, either. In fact, the United States Forest Service (USFS) awarded FAF the “National Rise to the Future Award,” which is given to organizations that stand above others in recruiting, reactivating, and retaining (3R’s) participants in fishing and boating. The television series is part of the “Getting Families Fishing and Boating Education Initiative,” which was launched by FAF in 2017 in partnership with the USFS, Into the Outdoors Education Network and ThisKidsFishing.US.two-pronged national education program has produced and broadcast television shows in the Emmywinning series that profiles and promotes family fishing on “Your National Forests”. This particular episode outlines the benefits and pathways to family fishing on Wisconsin’s Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest and Michigan’s Huron-Manistee National Forest, plus provides an overview of both National Forests.

Includes Mangrove Snapper caught bait from Bait and Tackle in Port Orange.

The National Forests in Florida manage three national forests: the Apalachicola, Osceola and Ocala. Combined, these national forest lands span almost 1.2 million acres in north and central Florida. That 1.2 million acres includes about 500,000 acres of wetlands and more than 85,000 acres of designated federal wilderness. More than 1,400 miles of trails and 118 developed recreation sites host more than 1.1 million visitors every year. Florida’s national forests also house more than 3,700 documented archaeological sites and nearly 55 historic sites. Our employees also care for 136 plant species and 36 animal species that are either threatened or endangered.

off

The episode emphasizes not just the enjoyment from fishing our national forests, but the positive values of connecting with family and friends outdoors fishing, boating and spending time away from technology. The USFS writes about FAF, saying, “The organization was formed in 2012 by a small group of anglers dedicated to helping grow participation in angling and boating through education and outreach. The FAF has grown into a national partner, creating digital angling and boating content through production contracts with Discover Mediaworks, a Midwestern strategic communications and media production company, and their Emmy award-winning Into the Outdoors Educational Network. The Foundation works to “Create New Anglers” by collaborating with individuals, agencies, and organizations throughout the United States, and exposing potential new anglers and boaters of all ages to the sport of fishing and boating by demonstrating how to catch fish and boat safely. Using networking and a handson grassroots approach, FAF has proven to be extremely effective in reaching out to millions of eager new anglers and boaters, bringing the next generation of participants to the outdoors.”

BIG ROCK MAKES HISTORY WITH RECORD PAYOUT Virginia Team Wins Over 3.4 Million Dollars in Prize Money with the Event’s Top Catch Along North Carolina’s Crystal Coast, the Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament recently celebrated 64 years of action-packed offshore competition with a record-breaking purse and top prize payout. This year, 266 teams and over 1,500 competitors vied for a piece of the impressive $5,858,875 purse, and the winning team was able to stack up a total payout of $3,489,813 – a record only surpassed by one other event in all of billfishing’s tournament history. Day 1 of the tournament started off hot, with Captain Neil Sykes of the 72-foot Viking, “MERCENARIA” and angler Matthew Brown weighing a 572.6-pound blue marlin. Their entry into the Fabulous Fisherman division of the tournament immediately ensured them at least $777,750 for bringing the first blue marlin to the scales weighing over 500-pounds. Teams fish four of the six days (captain’s choice) of the tournament and can enter in as many of the eleven eligible divisions as they prefer, each with unique payout opportunities. Although seven additional blue marlin were brought to the scales at Big Rock Landing throughout the 6-day tournament, none could unseat the 572.6-pound fish weighed by “MERCENARIA” on the first day. The team’s first place blue marlin along with their Fabulous Fisherman prize added up to winnings of $3,489,813. Other popular billfish tournaments have had larger participant fields and total purses available, but only once has a single participating team won a calcutta of prizes this large. NBA & North Carolina basketball icon, Michael Jordan, also added to the Day 1 excitement, backing into Big Rock Landing in Morehead City aboard his 80-foot Viking yacht, “CATCH 23” and weighing a 24-pound mahi. Jordan went on to release two blue marlin during the tournament. For complete article and payouts visit thebigrock.com

• Reduce the off-the-water transport limit from six to four fish per person.

• Reduce the vessel limit in each of the management regions to be: Panhandle, Big Bend, Northeast: four fish. Tampa Bay, Sarasota Bay, Charlotte Harbor, Southwest, Southeast: two fish.

• Establish nine redfish management regions.

• Prohibit captain and crew from retaining a bag limit of redfish when on a for-hire trip.

• Set the bag limit to one fish in the Panhandle, Big Bend, Tampa Bay, Sarasota Bay, Charlotte Harbor, Southwest, Southeast and Northeast regions. This is a reduction to the bag limit in the Northeast region.

“With this new forward-thinking management approach, we’re trying to do what’s best for this fishery. This agency is committed to working proactively to conserve the redfish fishery in Florida for future generations while balancing stakeholder interests,” said FWC Commissioner Steven Hudson.

• Allow only catch-and-release fishing for redfish in the Indian River Lagoon region.

Under docks, deep holes and at points are good locations to fish. Look for bubbles in the water for shellcracker beds as there are always some decent bass feeding in these. A slow falling sinking weightless worm or a chrome blue or green Rat-L-Trap reeled in as slowly as possible, are both working quite well. For the fishing trip you’ve dreamed of give Capt. Lynda a call @ 352-267-0062. Gary at BROOKER BAIT & TACKLE 352-460-0695 said on the Harris Chain during a tournament they weighed in 5 bass that weighed 24 pounds and the next day it took 28 pounds to win. Best way to catch, look for shad and try to find cover. Shell beds in open water on your points are working well also. They are still catching shellcrackers on crickets and worms. Brookers has a well stocked shop and expert knowledge on the current fishing, both freshwater and saltwater.

Several large Bass have been caught off these attractors. Some Hybrid Striped Bass have been caught in open water using live minnows and shiners. Lake Kerr can produce panfish by fishing in the open water where the water depth drops. Fish on the shallow side of the drop on the bottom for panfish. Bass fishing in the forest remains good throughout the summer into fall. Live baits always work well. Shiners free-lined near weed lines can be effective, as can live worms. Soft jerk baits rigged weed-less are also promising. Casting such lures into the weed line, then walking the lure on the surface to about 5 feet from the weed line, then letting it slowly sink to the bottom. Spinnerbaits can also be effective on cloudy days. Night fishing in some of the larger forest lakes (Bryant, Wildcat, and Grasshopper) works well. Lakes & Marion Counties There are approximately 600 natural lakes in the Ocala National Forest with lakes Bryant, Mill Dam, Kerr, Crooked, Wildcat, Lou Echo, Grasshopper, Eaton and Quarry Fish Pond being the most popular. The lake level on Lake Bryant is high, so much of the vegetation is accessible. Also, the two brush attractors (marked by yellow buoys) have been refurbished with “Mossback” fish attractors.
