Beach Street • Downtown Daytona Beach New trap tags for commercial lobster and crab traps starting Jan. 1 The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) is announcing new trap tags for all commercial lobster, stone crab and blue crab traps beginning on Jan. 1, 2024. After careful review, the FWC selected Sierra Group LLC to make and supply trap tags. For the 2024-25 season, all commercial trap tags will be green and printed with “FWCC,” the season year, tag type and endorsement number. Tags can be secured to traps by nail, screw or inserting the tail through the circle opening. Those securing tags by nail or screw can remove the tail with scissors, if preferred. The Halifax Sport Fishing Club will be kicking off their 2024 Seminars The series will start by welcoming
back Chef Slavic from Down the Hatch Restaurant on Thursday, January 18, 2024. Down the Hatch features some of the best food and seafood that Ponce Inlet has to offer. Chef Slavic has been the General Manager there for 24 years. Chef Slavic’s presentation will include a demonstration of various techniques for preparing and grilling seafood. He will share some recipes of a few menu items served at the restaurant and have samples available for everyone to try. Doors open at 6:30 PM, a brief business meeting at 7:00 PM, and the seminar at 7:30 PM February 15th will feature Captain Daniel Levesque owner and operator of Rare Breed Charters and Gobblers Lodge. Captain Daniel has been fishing out of Ponce Inlet for many years and has won numerous fishing tournaments. His team was the overall winner of the HSFC 21st Offshore Challenge with the winning Wahoo. His topic will be about high speed trolling for Wahoo. He will also talk a bit about bow hunting and tell you about the Gobbler’s Lodge 3D Archery Range and Pro Shop in Osteen. The doors will open at 5:00pm with multiple vendors and a taco bar provided by Millie’s Restaurant. There will also be raffle drawings. All seminars are free and open to the public at 3431 S. PUTNAM COUNTY Fellsmere wins the “Battle of the Lakes” with the heaviest total bass catches

The fish are in and the “Battle of the Lakes” concluded! Fellsmere Reservoir (popularly known as Headwaters Lake) won the battle against Orange Lake, with the highest total pounds of bass caughtand-released by competing anglers since the competition started last fall. The amiable competition between participants fishing Fellsmere Reservoir and Orange Lake, two of Florida’s premier trophy bass destinations, was designed to highlight both fisheries, generate enthusiasm for bass fishing and encourage participation in the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s (FWC) TrophyCatch program. The FWC’s citizen science TrophyCatch program served as the official catch recorder and tallied some interesting results from the contest. Participants of the battle were honored at the TrophyCatch Hall of Fame Ceremony at Bass Pro Shops in Daytona on Nov. 11. Fellsmere anglers submitted 85 trophy bass totaling 759 pounds, 3 ounces and averaging 8.93 pounds to put their favorite water on top. For Orange Lake, participants caught 64 bass weighing 635 pounds, 8 ounces, with an average bass weight of 9.93 pounds. However, these numbers only tell part of the story: Orange Lake yielded the heaviest bass of the entire season at 14 pounds, 1 ounce for a total of four Hall of Fame fish weighing more than 13 pounds, while Fellsmere did not post any giant bass in this category. Freaky Flounder!
No, you're not seeing double. This is a rare instance of a flounder with full pigment on both the “eye” side and the “blind” side, known as “complete ambicoloration”. Typically, larval flounder start out swimming upright in the water column with an eye on each side, and then they undergo metamorphosis in the first few weeks of their life. One eye moves to the opposite side of their head, their body flattens out as they start swimming parallel to the bottom, and pigment develops on the “eye” side, while the “blind” side that rests on the bottom remains white. These adaptations are thought to help the flounder have a wider field of view as they burrow in the sand to hide from predators and ambush their prey. Pigment mutations in flounder are common in aquaculture, but extremely rare in the wild. A local fisherman, Jeremy Goodrich, caught this Southern Flounder (Paralichthys lethostigma) near Oak Hill in the Mosquito Lagoon over the Veteran's Day weekend, and gave it to Rick Riley an FWC scientist at the Indian River Lagoon Field Lab in Melbourne. SEMINOLE-ORANGE COUNTY Conservation Remains Priority in Governor Ron DeSantis’ Focus on Florida’s Future Budget Governor Ron DeSantis announced the proposed Fiscal 2024-2025 Focus on Florida’s Future Budget, solidifying his commitment to support the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s (FWC) mission to protect Florida’s natural resources. The budget will help provide Floridians with more opportunities to get outdoors and high-priority conservation items including coral reef restoration, derelict vessel removal and habitat restoration initiatives. “Thank you to Governor DeSantis for your commitment to our fish and wildlife resources,” said FWC Chairman Rodney Barreto. “Florida is known worldwide as the Fishing and Boating Capital of the World, and because of the Governor’s support, we will continue to provide opportunities for residents and visitors.” The Governor’s proposed budget includes over $11.3 million and three new positions for initiatives supporting “Go Outdoors Florida,” which is FWC’s official licensing and permitting operation for hunting and fishing across the state. Getting more Floridians outdoors has been a top priority of the Governor and earlier this year, the Governor announced the Great Outdoors Initiative and signed an Executive Order to reduce the price of state park passes and FWC sportsman hunting and fishing licenses by 50%. Winter Drum Fishing – Tips, Regulations, & Records By: Captain Martin Goldys Reel Harmony Fishing Charters/Daytona Beach, FL Region When you ask an experienced angler in North or Central Florida what their favorite fish to target would be, most will respond with ‘The DRUM’. Pogonia Cromis, more commonly known as the Black Drum are a favorite among Florida Anglers to target, especially in the winter months. Its close relative, Sciaenops Ocellatus, or the Redfish is also among the most popular Saltwater game fish species targeted when temperatures drop. Through years of research and following migratory Drum and spawning patterns, it’s been determined this species thrives from December through March because they tend to prefer water temperatures from 50 to 75 degrees. While Drum species can obviously be found in warmer or cooler water temperatures, this range is best for targeting hungry and active Red and Black Drum. Depending on your preferred method of fishing (i.e., from a Boat, from a kayak, or from land), tactics will range. Speaking with any seasoned angler, it is clear the use of crustaceans (Blue Crabs, Fiddler Crabs, Sand Fleas, Clam Bellies, or Shrimp) is always best. Crustaceans and shellfish work so well because of the scent they distribute throughout the water column. Drum species cannot resist the scent of a live Blue Crab. While some anglers choose to break the fresh Live Blue Crab up into sections ( ¼’s, or ½’s ) other fisherman like to send out an entire Blue Crab for Drum to hunt down and locate. Looking at the Anatomy of Drum Species, it is obvious they often feed directly off the sea floor. Their mouth and lips face downward allowing them to easily scoop crustaceans off the bottom while their whiskers (barbels) and nostrils allow them to feel through muddy areas to seek out smaller prey/meals in the surrounding area. In short, drum mostly feed in a head down position. Whether fishing in the back country, in the mangroves, on a flat, or near a dock, you’ll want to beef up your terminal tackle. This is especially true when targeting larger Drum species under bridges, near jetties, or passes. These Drum species can get very BIG and being fully prepared will be essential. I typically use no less than 40-pound Fluro carbon leader, with a larger 4/0 to 7/0 sized Circle hook when targeting Red or Black Drum. Ensuring you have a heavy-duty swivel when utilizing any size lead weight will also be an important consideration. The proper weight (lead-Egg sinker) to use will very based on the current and depth in the area you choose to target these fish. In deeper more high-current areas, I tend to use a heavier lead-Egg sinker, ranging from 2oz. to 6oz. When in shallower areas that drum can be found, I will often use just a pinch weight (Split-shot) up to a 1, or 1.5 oz. (lead-Egg sinker). As long as your circle hooks point is exposed after attaching your bait of choice, you have a fairly good chance of hooking your targeted Drum species. SSFHMagazine Jan/Feb 2024 Page 38
These winter Drum are rather hungry fish that will gorge (feed) for days on end. Rarely will schooled up Drum ‘pass’ on a free meal especially in the form of crustaceans. Just be sure when targeting any species of Drum, you are in an area where water is moving/ flowing. An ‘IN’ or ‘Outgoing’ tidal flow works best when searching for Drum species.

According to the FWC (Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission), the current state record for a Redfish is 52 pounds and was caught along the east coast of Florida in Brevard County. Also, important to note, the current All-Tackle World Record Redfish weighed over 94 pounds and was caught along the Outer Banks in North Carolina. Licensed & Insured
When looking at the Black drum species, the Florida record is currently at 96 pounds (www.myFWC.com). According to the Texas Park and Wildlife Department, the largest Black Drum on record weighed a whopping 146 pounds. With larger species of Drum being caught each year, it is clear this species of fish loves to eat and gorge on crustaceans. This is an extremely FUN fish to target that will send your drag screaming. Just be prepared to hold on tight! Knowing your Drum species Regulations in Florida is very important. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission Slot for a Black Drum is 14” to 24” with a 5 fish limit (per person, per day). While licensed anglers are able to keep one black drum over the 24” slot, it is not recommended. Knowing most larger Drum don’t taste as good as the smaller slot Drum, and that Larger drum sometimes carry a Spaghetti Worm which makes harvesting larger Drum species a Bad idea. Being Larger Drum species are typically ‘Breeders’, it is most important you take the time necessary to fully revive these fish before setting them free. Properly releasing these larger Red and Black drum species is critical when considering their reproduction cycle. When it comes to the Redfish (aka Red-drum), they have a slot of 18”-27”. Depending on your region of Florida, ‘Per Person Limits’ can very. Some regions have special restrictions, and it’s critical to check these regulations in your area before you hit the water. A Mother & Son Hunt By: Lindsay Kiefer
Well I have finally gotten to take the time to sit down and tell you all about our amazing Tuesday morning hunt. Liam scored BIG on the final day in the final hour, and I think I know who we will thank for that! We were so blessed to get invited on a once in a lifetime Mama & Son hunt at Collin's Low Country South Carolina hunt club, sponsored by our amazing Desiree’ at Southern States Fishn' & Huntn' Magazine. We hunted Friday-Tuesday, 9 incredible hunts! I’m not sure if you have ever tried to sit through 9 hunts in a row at 10 years old but… it’s GOT to be HARD. I say this because I’m 34 and it was HARD even for me! I couldn’t be more proud of this kid! He sat so patiently never complaining in the stand and only tried to sleep in on Monday. Tuesday Morning started out like most of our other hunts it was chilly! There were deer at the feeder and food plot right at daylight (6:30-7 AM), neither were shooters though. So we waited… the wind started to pick up around 7:30 and Liam got cold, he snuggled tight laid his head in my lap. 7:45 AM I had a group of does cross the lane down about 200 yards never stopping, so I watched. By 8:30 I wasn’t seeing anything or even hearing the first bird. The wind had really picked up and Liam was sleeping good 9:00 hit and I was sitting thinking about how amazing our trip had been thanking God for this time and all the fun we had. I texted Tom a thank you and I was set in my mind we were going home without a deer but that was absolutely OKAY! At 9:15 Tom asked what I wanted him to do since we hadn’t seen anything in a while.. (come get us or leave us to sit longer). I typed up another message about how thankful I was and it wasn’t about killing a deer it was about the experience and the trip and just spending time together. I sat there trying to finish it; I was going to tell him to go ahead and come get us. We had a 6+ hour drive home, we should go ahead and get going, but in that moment emotions just overcame me.. tears just started pouring. I’ve been struggling so much personally lately.. I was just feeling so thankful for this time with Liam. I started thanking God again looking down at my sweet still sleeping boy in my lap. All I could think is when will I get this chance again? Why would I ever want to cut this short? I erased the message and quickly typed “You can leave us until you get the other guys." And that was the best decision I could have made. 9:20 AM I Texted Tom the squirrels had finally come out… He responded with a “Good the deer are next!” 5 minutes later Liam woke up from his longest shooting house nap ever, and we watched and continued waiting. 9:40 AM comes and I looked up the lane to see this buck running to us! He broke to a fast trot and came all the way to the corn so fast we didn’t have time to think. Liam got him in the scope and I had him in the binoculars. We decided this could be a good buck for Liam to shoot! Tom also gave us the GO! I talked him through his shot and he kept saying his heart was beating out of his chest and he was shaking. Liam SMOKED this buck at about 120 yards, and we watched him drop and kick a few times and never saw him run. Somehow though he made it 80 yards through the pines, thankful for a good dog like Gator to make quick work of the find! That was nerve wrecking to be on this side when we walked up and he wasn’t right there, before I could panic too much Gator had went “on point”. Oh yeah an you know I made Liam drag, can’t wait to get his mount back he already has the spot on the wall picked out. Thank you so much again Tom and Diane at Collins' Lowcountry Hunt Club! About Wild Turkeys Florida is home to two subspecies of wild turkey — the eastern wild turkey and the Osceola or Florida wild turkey. The Osceola lives only on the Florida peninsula. The NWTF and the FWC recognize, in their respective turkey registry programs, any wild turkey harvested within or south of the counties of Dixie, Gilchrist, Alachua, Union, Bradford, Clay and Duval, to be an Osceola subspecies. Season Dates The 2024 spring turkey season south of State Road 70 opens March 2 and runs through April 7 on lands outside of the WMA system. North of State Road 70, the 2024 spring season opens March 16 and runs through April 21. Bag Limits Hunters may take bearded turkeys and gobblers only. On lands outside of the WMA system, the daily bag limit is two and the season and possession limit on turkeys is two. License and Permit Requirements To hunt wild turkeys on lands outside of the WMA system, hunters will need a hunting license and turkey permit, unless exempt. We have the longest deer season in the US August 15th-January 1st, with weapon of choice for the entire season. The velvet hunts last through Labor Day weekend and the rut is throughout the months of October and November. We hunt seven days a week and allow two bucks per day, only with one small (under 12" wide) per hunter, per season. We have open areas where first timers can take a buck, Long Managed Trophy Areas where bucks must be a minimum of 15" outside spread. Then we have our special Big Trophy Area, where the bucks have been on strict management for only mature bucks for the past 13 seasons, the bucks there have to be 16" outside spread of 110 Boone and Crockett Score. That area will be for very serious Trophy Hunters only.
