Since 1992, Summer at Sandy Spring has been committed to providing a unique and enriching summer program, filled with fun, challenges and memorable experiences. Our program promotes teamwork, friendship and, most importantly, fun in a safe environment. Over the years we’ve grown quite a bit and we continue to innovate and improve our experiences for campers and camp families each year. From the building of a professionalquality ropes course, to the introduction of the Wildebeest Watering Hole and locally-sourced chef-prepared food, Summer at Sandy Spring is continuously working to provide campers with programming, food, and activities that are healthy for the mind, body and spirit.

What’s New Under the Sun? Summer Seekers For Teens Age: High School
Summer Seekers can keep high school students engaged all summer long. Seekers will be part of a leadership program in which they apprentice to a camp workshop for grades 2 – 5. They will learn how to develop and implement lesson plans, and manage a structured and fun environment for younger campers. Seekers will also enjoy two day trips with their peers to places such as the beach, fishing, an amusement or water park, or The Adventure Park at Sandy Spring Friends School!
Exciting New Workshops! This summer we’ve added some exciting additions to our workshop program in our Friends Camps! Our new Archery workshop develops focus, concentration, and hand-eye coordination as campers experience the fun of one of the oldest sports in the world! Our new art-based workshops like Edible Creations for Trailblazer Friends, and Splatter Painting for Senior Friends keeps the creative energy flowing all summer long!

ACADEMICS WORKSHOP Weeks Offered: All Ages: PreK – 5th Grade Rate: $145/week
Reading:
Our fun filled reading sessions reinforce a variety of reading strategies and skills ranging from decoding words and building vocabulary to identifying the key elements in a story and understanding the difference between a main idea and supporting details in written work. Students will be exposed to both nonfiction and fictional texts of high interest. Instructors tailor developmentally appropriate learning strategies to each student’s level of ability. Children are immersed in literature that naturally increases their enthusiasm.
Writing:
These intensive sessions focus on five key aspects of the writing process: brainstorming, outlining, writing a first draft, editing, and publishing. Children will engage in both narrative and information writing assignments where they will have the opportunity to build background knowledge through the incorporation of multimedia videos, paired reading passages and online research engines. Younger students dictate their thoughts and ideas to the teacher to discover how spoken words can be seen in writing; older students build on existing skills to improve their writing mechanics and ability to express thoughts and ideas on paper.
Math:
These sessions focus primarily on helping children understand mathematical concepts, work with numbers and operations, and develop reasoning and problem solving skills. Emphasis is placed on drill and skill and problem solving experiences customized to different learning styles. The use of iPads are incorporated daily to provide reinforcement on skills and concepts taught and engage student interest.
15
Our two hour Academics Workshop runs Monday through Friday mornings for campers enrolled in our Junior, Intermediate, and Senior Friends camps. It is designed to provide children with both practice and enrichment in core academic subjects. The goal is to foster a love of learning while helping students master and move beyond important grade level skills. Students are taught in small groups based on ability. A Parent Educational Assessment is completed at the time of registration, and instructors perform assessments on the first day with new campers.
STEAMers Weeks Offered: All Ages: Entering 2nd – 5th Grade Rate: $75/week
Our afternoon STEAM-ers workshop is a great opportunity to introduce and develop your camper’s love of science through creative problem solving. This one-hour workshop runs Monday through Thursday afternoons. STEAM = Science and Technology interpreted through Engineering and the Arts, all based in mathematical elements. In this workshop, campers will explore all the STEAM elements by completing different challenges. Campers are encouraged to become risk-takers and creative thinkers as they work together to problem-solve using the engineering design process. Campers communicate with one another as they imagine a solution for the challenge activity. Next, they use their art skills to sketch their design. Campers then work together to create their design using various materials which may include: popsicle sticks, plastic cups, toothpicks and/or plastic straws. Campers are encouraged to use their imagination to try different ideas because they always get a chance to improve their original design. At the end of the week campers come together to discuss how STEAM was implemented. Campers also discover how the challenges can relate to real-world problems. STEAM-ers is a great way for campers to complete hands-on challenges in a free flowing workspace designed for communication, flexibility, and creativity.
