Dear Members, The summer is winding down and soon the kids will be back in school! Our participation in junior golf, tennis and swimming is at an all-time high. A special “thank you” to all of the parents for your assistance with each of our programs. We surely would not be able to pull it off without your help! The master planning process for the east side of the clubhouse, pool and golf course are underway. We appreciate everyone who took the time to offer their opinions on the golf course and practice facilities. Your feedback is invaluable to the planning process and we look forward to your involvement as we move forward. Please contact me if you have any questions or comments regarding the master plan…or any other matters relating to the Club! We hope to see you at the Club soon! Dear Member, We would like to truly thank everyone who braved the heat for our 4th of July celebration last month. The weather did not deter close to 1,000 Members from coming to the Club for BBQ, music, and a fantastic fireworks show! Congratulations go out to our WCC Gator swim team for another successful season! Many thanks to head coach Randy McVay and his assistant coaches – Chesley Kilgore, Kelsey Allen, and Bailey Beins - for all of their hard work. Both our Juniors and Seniors finished at the top of the Country Club division at the City meet, and our Juniors took the overall City title! This month will feature a couple of very fun events. On August 19, we will host our third annual Junior Culinary School. This event will give our youngest Members an opportunity to work with Executive Chef Damian Lehman in his kitchen preparing a meal for their family. We will also host a wine blending class for our monthly tasting. This is a great, interactive event that gives everyone a chance to play winemaker. We hope to see everyone at the Club soon!

One of the biggest causes to slicing the ball is failure to get your weight shifted to the left side at impact and follow-through. If you struggle with weight shift in your golf swing, and this is one of the reasons you slice the ball, give this a shot. One drill you can do to combat a slice, is shift your weight from your right side on the backswing to so far in front of the ball at impact and follow-through that after hitting the ball you have to take a step forward. Because the momentum in shifting weight from right side to left side during the swing, it will carry you off balance. This is ultimately not the ideal, but it’s a drill you can use in the meantime to unlearn some bad habits, and figure out how to fix a golf slice. When you have your weight in front of the golf ball at impact, you will naturally close the club face down with your arms. A slightly closed club face at impact will result in hook spin on the ball…a dream come true for slicers! Nick Muller

GroundsReport Dear Member, Although summer is quickly winding down, our team is heading into one of our most crucial months of the year. Getting the golf course through the heat and humidity of August is always our top priority of the summer. At the top of our list for the month is water management. Although the Zoysia thrives in the heat, our cool season rough and greens would prefer highs in the 80’s as opposed to the upper 90’s or 100’s as we have experienced for most of the summer. Balancing the water, along with proper disease management should get us through the month just fine. Throughout the month, you will notice staff members hand watering greens. We

Nice Shots: Congratulations to Emma Whitaker for claiming the 2011 State Junior Championship in the 12-14 age group…as a 12 year old! She fired rounds of 90-87 and also finished 4th overall! Keep up the hard work Emma! A “Nice Shot” to Alex Beury for her recent performances away from the Club. Alex was a semi-finalist in the Wichita City Championship contested at MacDonald Park and followed that up with 7th place finish in the Kansas State Amateur played at Turkey Creek G.C. in McPherson. Great playing Alex! Congrats to Alisa West for capturing the Consolation bracket of the Championship Flight of the Wichita City Championship, played at MacDonald Park. Great playing Alisa!

will do our best to avoid interrupting play as much as possible, unfortunately, there are times when will have to get on a green in front of play. Thank you for your patience with this matter. As discussed in last month’s newsletter, please keep carts out of the rough as much as possible. With the aggressive growth of the Zoysia, we would prefer the extra traffic on the fairways as opposed to the rough. Thank you for your interest in the golf course and I look forward to seeing you on the course soon. Sincerely, Brian White Golf Course Superintendent Keep up with all Golf Events via the Internet

FITNESS TIP OF THE MONTH

STRETCHING is a vital part of exercising that too often gets overlooked. Muscles need this necessary attention after a workout to ensure that injuries are prevented and to assist the body in the appropriate redistribution of blood following the stress of exercise. Stretching should always be done after the body has been warmed up. Never bounce the body while stretching – holding the stretch is a much more effective and safe way of properly working the muscle. If you need help remembering which muscles you have already addressed in the stretching process, or are concerned that you might overlook an important muscle group, simply start from your toes and work towards your head – this will ensure that all major groups receive your attention. It is normal to feel some slight discomfort in the initial moments of a stretching session, but as you ease the muscles the tension will loosen and your muscles will thank you later. If you have any questions regarding proper stretching techniques – please feel free to ask any member of our training staff and they will be glad to assist you.
