The Invitatory

Phos Hilaron Ancient Greek hymn meaning “O Gladsome Light

O gracious Light, George Black O gracious Light, pure brightness of the ever-living Father in heaven, O Jesus Christ, holy and blessed! Now as we come to the setting of the sun, and our eyes behold the vesper light, we sing your praises, O God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. You are worthy at all times to be praised by happy voices, O Son of God, O Giver of Life, and to be glorified through all the worlds.

The Psalms The Brothers will sing an antiphon at the beginning and end of each psalm Psalm 110:1–5, 7 1

The LORD said to my Lord, "Sit at my right hand, * until I make your enemies your footstool."

2

The LORD will send the scepter of your power out of Zion, * saying, "Rule over your enemies round about you.

3

Princely state has been yours from the day of your birth; * in the beauty of holiness have I begotten you, like dew from the womb of the morning."

4

The LORD has sworn and he will not recant: * "You are a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek."

5

The Lord who is at your right hand will smite kings in the day of his wrath; * he will rule over the nations.

6

He will heap high the corpses; * he will smash heads over the wide earth.

7

He will drink from the brook beside the road; * therefore he will lift high his head.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: * as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

Psalm 113 1

Hallelujah! Give praise, you servants of the LORD; * praise the Name of the LORD.

2

Let the Name of the LORD be blessed, * from this time forth for evermore.

3

From the rising of the sun to its going down * let the Name of the LORD be praised.

4

The LORD is high above all nations, * and his glory above the heavens.

5

Who is like the LORD our God, who sits enthroned on high, * but stoops to behold the heavens and the earth?

6

He takes up the weak out of the dust * and lifts up the poor from the ashes.

7

He sets them with the princes, * with the princes of his people.

8

He makes the woman of a childless house * to be a joyful mother of children.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: * as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

Psalm 116:9–17 9

I believed, even when I said, I have been brought very low." * In my distress I said, "No one can be trusted."

10 How shall I repay the LORD * for all the good things he has done for me? 11 I will lift up the cup of salvation * and call upon the Name of the LORD. 12 I will fulfill my vows to the LORD * in the presence of all his people. 13 Precious in the sight of the LORD * is the death of his servants. 14 O LORD, I am your servant; * I am your servant and the child of your handmaid; you have freed me from my bonds. 15 I will offer you the sacrifice of thanksgiving * and call upon the Name of the LORD. 16 I will fulfill my vows to the LORD * in the presence of all his people, 17 In the courts of the LORD'S house, * in the midst of you, O Jerusalem. Hallelujah! Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: * as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

Psalm 126 1

When the LORD restored the fortunes of Zion, * then were we like those who dream.

2

Then was our mouth filled with laughter, * and our tongue with shouts of joy.

3

Then they said among the nations, * "The LORD has done great things for them."

4

The LORD has done great things for us, * and we are glad indeed.

5

Restore our fortunes, O LORD, * like the watercourses of the Negev.

6

Those who sowed with tears * will reap with songs of joy.

7

Those who go out weeping, carrying the seed, * will come again with joy, shouldering their sheaves.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: * as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

First Lesson Jeremiah 26:1-15 Jeremiah’s Prophecies in the Temple At the beginning of the reign of King Jehoiakim son of Josiah of Judah, this word came from the Lord: 2 Thus says the Lord: Stand in the court of the Lord’s house, and speak to all the cities of Judah that come to worship in the house of the Lord; speak to them all the words that I command you; do not hold back a word. 3 It may be that they will listen, all of them, and will turn from their evil way, that I may change my mind about the disaster that I intend to bring on them because of their evil doings. 4 You shall say to them: Thus says the Lord: If you will not listen to me, to walk in my law that I have set before you, 5 and to heed the words of my servants the prophets whom I send to you urgently—though you have not heeded— 6 then I will make this house like Shiloh, and I will make this city a curse for all the nations of the earth. 7 The

priests and the prophets and all the people heard Jeremiah speaking these words in the house of the Lord. 8 And when Jeremiah had finished speaking all that the Lord had commanded him to speak to all the people, then the priests and the prophets and all the people laid hold of him, saying, “You shall die! 9 Why have you prophesied in the name of the Lord, saying, ‘This house shall be like Shiloh, and this city shall be desolate, without inhabitant’?” And all the people gathered around Jeremiah in the house of the Lord. 10 When

the officials of Judah heard these things, they came up from the king’s house to the house of the Lord and took their seat in the entry of the New Gate of the house of the Lord. 11 Then the priests and the prophets said to the officials and to all the people, “This man deserves the sentence of death because he has prophesied against this city, as you have heard with your own ears.” 12 Then

Jeremiah spoke to all the officials and all the people, saying, “It is the Lord who sent me to prophesy against this house and this city all the words you have heard. 13 Now therefore amend your ways and your doings, and obey the voice of the Lord your God, and the Lord will change his mind about the disaster that he has pronounced against you. 14 But as for me, here I am in your hands. Do with me as seems good and right to you. 15 Only know for certain that if you put me to death, you will be bringing innocent blood upon yourselves and upon this city and its inhabitants, for in truth the Lord sent me to you to speak all these words in your ears.”

The Song of Mary, The Magnificat [Luke 1:46-55] The Brothers chant an antiphon at the beginning of the Magnificat, and again at the end.

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord, my spirit rejoices in God my Savior; * for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant. From this day all generations will call me blessed: * the Almighty has done great things for me, and holy is his Name. He has mercy on those who fear him * in every generation. He has shown the strength of his arm, * he has scattered the proud in their conceit. He has cast down the mighty from their thrones, * and has lifted up the lowly. He has filled the hungry with good things, * and the rich he has sent away empty. He has come to the help of his servant Israel, * for he has remembered his promise of mercy, The promise he made to our fathers, * to Abraham and his children for ever. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: * as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

Second Lesson Matthew 10:16-32 Coming Persecutions 16 “See,

I am sending you out like sheep into the midst of wolves; so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves. 17 Beware of them, for they will hand you over to councils and flog you in their synagogues; 18 and you will be dragged before governors and kings because of me, as a testimony to them and the Gentiles. 19 When they hand you over, do not worry about how you are to speak or what you are to say; for what you are to say will be given to you at that time; 20 for it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you. 21 Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child, and children will rise against parents and have them put to death; 22 and you will be hated by all because of my name. But the one who endures to the end will be saved. 23 When they persecute you in one town, flee to the next; for truly I tell you, you will not have gone through all the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes. 24 “A

disciple is not above the teacher, nor a slave above the master; 25 it is enough for the disciple to be like the teacher, and the slave like the master. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebul, how much more will they malign those of his household! Whom to Fear 26 “So

have no fear of them; for nothing is covered up that will not be uncovered, and nothing secret that will not become known. 27 What I say to you in the dark, tell in the light; and what you hear whispered, proclaim from the housetops. 28 Do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell. 29 Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. 30 And even the hairs of your head are all counted. 31 So do not be afraid; you are of more value than many sparrows. 32 “Everyone

in heaven;

therefore who acknowledges me before others, I also will acknowledge before my Father

The Apostles’ Creed Officiant and People

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen.

The Collect Anthem By the Sea of Crystal 1 By the sea of crystal saints in glory stand, myriads in number, drawn from every land. Robed in white apparel, washed in Jesus' blood, they now reign in heaven with the Lamb of God. 2 Out of tribulation, death, and Satan's hand, they have been translated, at the Lord's command. In their hands they're holding palms of victory. Hark! the jubilant chorus shouts triumphantly.

3 "Unto God Almighty, sitting on the throne, and the Lamb, victorious, be the praise alone." God has wrought salvation; he did wondrous things. Who shall not extol thee, holy King of kings! Text: William Kuipers (1933) Music: Crystal, John Vanderhoven
