Collect of the Day Presider Almighty God, you show the light of your truth to those who are in error, to the intent that they may return to the way of righteousness: Grant to those who are admitted into the fellowship of Christ’s religion that they may avoid those things that are contrary to their profession, and follow all such things as are agreeable to it; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. People Amen.

THE LITURGY OF THE WORD First Reading

Acts 11:19–26

Now those who were scattered because of the persecution that took place over Stephen traveled as far as Phoenicia, Cyprus, and Antioch, and they spoke the word to no one except Jews. But among them were some men of Cyprus and Cyrene who, on coming to Antioch, spoke to the Hellenists also, proclaiming the Lord Jesus. The hand of the Lord was with them, and a great number became believers and turned to the Lord. News of this came to the ears of the church in Jerusalem, and they sent Barnabas to Antioch. When he came and saw the grace of God, he rejoiced, and he exhorted them all to remain faithful to the Lord with steadfast devotion; for he was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and of faith. And a great many people were brought to the Lord. Then Barnabas went to Tarsus to look for Saul, and when he had found him, he brought him to Antioch. So it was that for an entire year they met with the church and taught a great many people, and it was in Antioch that the disciples were first called “Christians.” Gradual Psalm

The Holy Gospel

John 10:22–30

At that time the festival of the Dedication took place in Jerusalem. It was winter, and Jesus was walking in the temple, in the portico of Solomon. So the Jews gathered around him and said to him, “How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Messiah, tell us plainly.” Jesus answered, “I have told you, and you do not believe. The works that I do in my Father’s name testify to me; but you do not believe, because you do not belong to my sheep. My sheep hear my voice. I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one will snatch them out of my hand. What my Father has given me is greater than all else, and no one can snatch it out of the Father’s hand. The Father and I are one.” Sermon Prayers of the People The Peace

Invitation Presider Behold what you are. People May we become what we receive.* *These words come from St. Augustine of Hippo (354-430) in a sermon on the Holy Eucharist in which he reflected on “one of the deep truths of Christian faith: through our participation in the sacraments (particularly Baptism and Eucharist), we are transformed into the Body of Christ, given for the world.”

Announcements Welcome We are delighted to welcome you to the Monastery today. If you are a visitor, or new to the Monastery or Community, please take a moment to introduce yourself to one of the Brothers following the Eucharist.

The Chapel is Open!! The chapel now for in-person worship, and private prayer, throughout the day. The doors will open before Morning Prayer and close after Compline (Tuesday – Saturday), and from Morning Prayer to after Evening Prayer on Sundays. You are welcome to join us for in-person worship, or for a time of private prayer. We ask that all who make use of the chapel for private prayer, or who join us for in-person worship, be fully vaccinated, boosted and wear a mask. Extra masks are always available at the back of the church near the organ. A full schedule of services is available on our website www.SSJE.org

The Most Reverend Frank T. Griswold This evening we welcome Bishop Frank Griswold to the Monastery as our preacher and presider at the Eucharist. Bishop Griswold is the Bishop Visitor of the Community, and is making his annual official visitation.

Annual Community Report The annual St. John’s Day community report is now available at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tzb2V4RGKB8. Please share this link as a way to introduce the Monastery and the Brothers to your family and friends. Boston Calling From past experience we have discovered that we cannot compete with Boston Calling which takes place the weekend of 27 – 29 May. As a result, the chapel will close after Evening Prayer on Thursday, 26 May. We will open for the Sunday Eucharist on 29 May, and close again following the Eucharist. We will reopen for Morning Prayer on Tuesday, 31 May. Except for the Sunday Eucharist we will not livestream our services during this time. We regret having to do this.

Away Week The chapel will close after Evening Prayer on Sunday, 5 June and reopen for Morning Prayer on Tuesday, 14 June. We will also not be livestreaming during this time. This is one of our quarterly away weeks when Brothers are able to have their own personal retreat, visit their families, or take 13

some vacation time. Please pray for the gift of renewal, rest, and refreshment for the Brothers during this time.

Collection for Ukraine The Brothers are preparing to make a second gift to support work among Ukrainian refugees. If you would like to make a gift towards this you may do so via the Sunday collection on Sunday, 8 and 15 May. Please make your check payable to SSJE and mark it clearly Ukraine on the memo line. Cash should be placed in an envelope marked Ukraine. If you would like to make a gift towards this via credit card, please be in touch with our colleague Jerome Berkeley at jberkeley@ssje.org This gift will be made to the Bishop’s Discretionary Fund of the Convocation of Episcopal Churches in Europe. Many will remember Bishop Mark Eddington, formerly of this Diocese who is now the Episcopal bishop in Europe. Please hold Bishop Mark and the Convocation, as well as their work with refugees in your prayers.

Livestreaming We livestream Evening Prayer and Compline throughout the week, as well as the Sunday and Tuesday Eucharists. If you cannot join us in person, please join us online.

Holy Communion For the time being, we will continue to administer Holy Communion by Bread only. Please remember that the Church catholic has always taught that the fullness of the Sacrament is received even when only one form is received. Gluten Free Wafers at Holy Communion Please indicate to the Brother administering Holy Communion if that is your preference.

Monastery Guesthouse Limited space and times are available for stays in the guesthouse between now and the end of July. If a time of quiet and retreat would be helpful, please check our website for more information. We ask that all guests be fully vaccinated and boosted, and to be prepared to wear masks in the chapel.

Saturday Evening Prayer Evening Prayer (Evensong) is one of the glories of Anglicanism. The community sings Evening Prayer at 6:00 PM Wednesday through Saturday and at 4:00 PM on Sunday. Saturday Evening Prayer is especially beautiful. Now that the chapel is once again open, why not make attending Evening Prayer on Saturday, or another evening during the week, part of your regular pattern.

Parking on Memorial Drive Memorial Drive is now closed to traffic and parking on both Saturdays and Sundays from 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM. Unfortunately, this means that parking in front of the Monastery is no longer available on Sundays. This took effect on 23 April and will last until Sunday, 18 December.
