Collect of the Day

Presider The Lord be with you.

People And also with you.

Presider Let us pray.

Father in heaven, who at the baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan proclaimed him your beloved Son and anointed him with the Holy Spirit: Grant that all who are baptized into his Name may keep the covenant they have made, and boldly confess him as Lord and Savior; who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, in glory everlasting. People Amen.

LITURGY OF THE WORD

First Reading Hebrews 2:5–12

Now God did not subject the coming world, about which we are speaking, to angels. But someone has testified somewhere,

“What are human beings that you are mindful of them, or mortals, that you care for them?

You have made them for a little while lower than the angels; you have crowned them with glory and honor, subjecting all things under their feet. ” Now in subjecting all things to them, God left nothing outside their control. As it is, we do not yet see everything in subjection to them, but we do see Jesus, who for a little while was made lower than the angels, now crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone. It was fitting that God, for whom and through whom all things exist, in bringing many children to glory, should make the pioneer of their salvation perfect through sufferings. For the one who sanctifies and those who are sanctified all have one Father. For this reason Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers and sisters, saying,

“I will proclaim your name to my brothers and sisters, in the midst of the congregation I will praise you. ”

The Holy Gospel Mark 1:21–28

An Alleluia is sung before the proclamation of the Gospel

They went to Capernaum; and when the sabbath came, he entered the synagogue and taught. They were astounded at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes. Just then there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit, and he cried out, “What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are, the Holy One of God.” But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be silent, and come out of him!” And the unclean spirit, convulsing him and crying with a loud voice, came out of him. They were all amazed, and they kept on asking one another, “What is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him.” At once his fame began to spread throughout the surrounding region of Galilee.

Confession and Absolution of Sins

Presider Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor. Most merciful God, People we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

Presider Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen.

Prayer After Communion

Presider Father of all, People we give you thanks and praise, that when we were still far off you met us in your Son and brought us home. Dying and living, he declared your love, gave us grace, and opened the gate of glory. May we who share Christ’s body live his risen life; we who drink his cup bring life to others; we whom the Spirit lights give light to the world. Keep us firm in the hope you have set before us, so that we and all your children shall be free, and the whole earth live to praise your name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Epiphany Proclamation:

The Announcement of Easter 2023

Dear sisters and brothers:

The glory of the Lord has shone upon us, and shall ever manifest itself among us, until the day of his return. Through the rhythms and changes of time, let us call to mind and live the mysteries of salvation.

The centre of the whole liturgical year is the Paschal Triduum of the Lord, crucified, buried, and risen, which will culminate in the solemn Vigil of Easter, during the holy night that will end with the dawn of the ninth day of April. Every Sunday, as a weekly Easter, holy Church makes present that great and saving deed by which Christ has forever conquered sin and death.

From Easter there comes forth, and are reckoned all the days we keep holy: Ash Wednesday, the beginning of the Lenten spring, will occur on the twenty – second day of February. The Ascension of the Lord, will be commemorated on the eighteenth day of May.

The Day of Pentecost, the joyful conclusion of the Easter feast will occur on the twenty – eighth day of May.

Trinity Sunday, when we celebrate the mystery of the One God in Trinity of Persons, will occur on the fourth day of June.

12

The Feast of Corpus Christi, when we give thanks for the life – giving Sacrament of Christ’s Body and Blood, will occur on the eighth day of June.

Sacred Heart, the day we give thanks for the gifts of love we have received from the heart of Jesus, will occur on the sixteenth day of June.

And, the First Sunday of Advent, will occur on the third day of December.

Likewise, the feasts of Mary, the holy Mother of God, of the apostles and saints, and in the commemoration of the faithful departed, the pilgrim church on earth proclaims the resurrection of Jesus Christ our Lord.

To Christ who was, who is, and who is to come, the Lord of time and history, be endless praise forever and ever! Amen!

Welcome

We are delighted to welcome you to the Monastery today, either in-person or online. If you are a visitor, or new to the Monastery or Community, please take a moment to introduce yourself to one of the Brothers following the Eucharist. If you are joining us online, drop us a note telling us where you are joining us from.

Happy Epiphany

The Brothers wish all of you a Happy and Joyous Epiphany-tide!

Retreat Day

The community’s monthly retreat day this month is Wednesday, 11 January. We will not pray Compline on Tuesday, 10 January, or Morning Prayer or Compline on Wednesday, 11 January. Our retreat day in February will be on Wednesday, 15 February.

Feast of Richard Meux Benson SSJE

Saturday, 14 January is the Feast of our Founder, Father Benson, who died on 14 January 1915. Please join us for the Eucharist on Saturday at 8:00 AM, as we give thanks for Father Benson’s life and vision, and pray for the gift of vocations to our community.

Emery House

We are excited about re-opening Emery House. Next Sunday afternoon, Brothers Keith, David, and Jack will be moving to Emery House to re-establish our life there. Please watch for an announcement about when the guest house there will re-open.

Looking Ahead

The next quarterly Away Week will be 6–13 February. The chapel will close after Evening Prayer on Sunday, 5 February and reopen for Morning Prayer on Tuesday, 14 February. This time away gives the Brothers an opportunity to have some vacation or staycation time before Lent, visit their families, or have their own personal retreat.

14

Livestreaming

We have resumed livestreaming Evening Prayer throughout the week, as well as the Sunday and Tuesday Eucharists. We will begin livestreaming Compline again on Thursday, 12 January.

Covid Safety Practices

You may find that some windows are being left open in the Chapel to enhance the ventilation. Please dress accordingly. Following our recent case of COVID in the Community you may see some Brothers wearing masks. While masks are no longer compulsory, we fully support those who choose to wear a mask for any reason. Please also remember that since this is our home, and several Brothers, as well as members of the congregation fall into the vulnerable persons category, we require everyone who attends Chapel services to be fully vaccinated and boosted.

Holy Communion

Following Diocesan guidelines, please refrain from Intinction (dipping the Bread into the Chalice). If you wish to abstain from receiving from the chalice, remember that the Church catholic has always taught that the fullness of the Sacrament is received even when only one form is received.

Gluten Free Wafers at Holy Communion

Please indicate to the Brother administering Bread at Holy Communion if that is your preference.

Evening Prayer

Evening Prayer (Evensong) is one of the glories of Anglicanism. The community sings Evening Prayer at 6:00PM Wednesday through Saturday, and at 4:00PM on Sunday. Saturday and Sunday Evening Prayer are especially beautiful. Why not make attending Evening Prayer on Saturday or Sunday, or another evening during the week, part of your regular pattern.
